On Thursday, April 9th, 2026, I visited the Midland Air Museum and had the incredible opportunity to enjoy a guided cockpit tour of their Avro Vulcan XL360. This marked my second cockpit tour, following my 2024 tour of Newark Air Museum's Avro Vulcan B.2 XM594 guided by former Vulcan pilot Bill Ramsey. Unlike the previous experience, my phone battery lasted this time, allowing me to film the inside. This was my first visit to the Museum, recommended to me by a volunteer I met last year at Wroughton Science Museum's storage facility near Swindon. During our meeting, we shared disappointment over missing the Lockheed Constellation stored there. The Museum showcases an impressive variety of designs from the British aircraft industry of the 1950s and 1960s. Highlights include carrier-based aircraft like the Hawker Sea Hawk, de Havilland Sea Vixen, Fairey Gannet, and Sea Harrier, alongside RAF fighters such as the Vampire, Meteor, Hunter, Javelin, and Lightning. Bombers like the English Electric Canberra are featured, as are military trainers including the American Lockheed T-33, Polish PZL Iskra, and British Vampire T.11. Additionally, there’s an entire section dedicated to jet engine development, spearheaded by local innovator Frank Whittle, as well as exhibits and models focusing on regional aviation history. Volunteers were exceptionally helpful, and the Museum is complemented by a cozy café and shop stocked with models and second-hand books. This combination makes it a truly treasured destination.

If you’re locking for shopping but don’t like London prices then head to Swindon Designer Outlet, less than 2.5 hours by car or 1.5 hours by train. This amazing mall is built at an old railway depot and has amazing options for the whole family. It offers prices up to 60% off the high street price and also does great seasonal deals. It has a good range of brands including Calvin Klein, Nike, adidas, Hugo boss and Marks & Spencer - it also has a full good court and family play area. There is free onsite parking and the whole mall is use conditioned with good wifi. I also love that they have honoured the history and heritage of the area and you can learn a lot about the history of the rail industry here. There are also fully restored locomotive engines dotted through the mall along with a lot of equipment from the railway industry.
