Styria travel guide and discussion

It's second-largest city and the capital of Styria, offering a perfect blend of historic Renaissance architecture, cutting-edge modern design, and a relaxed Mediterranean vibe. The Schlossberg (Castle Hill) and Uhrturm (Clock Tower): Rising high above the city center, this tree-covered hill is the ultimate symbol of Graz. You can climb the 260 steps of the Schlossbergplatz stairs, take a glass elevator, or ride the historic funicular railway to the top. The landmark Uhrturm, dating back to the 13th century, offers panoramic views of the red-roofed city. For a unique thrill, you can take The Slide, the world's tallest underground slide, back down through the inside of the mountain. The Old Town (Altstadt) and Hauptplatz: The bustling main square is surrounded by grand, intricately painted buildings, dominated by the imposing Town Hall (Rathaus). Spreading out from the square is a web of cobblestone alleyways, hidden inner courtyards (like the beautiful Renaissance-style Landhaushof), and boutique shops. Kunsthaus Graz (The "Friendly Alien"): Floating spectacularly on the bank of the Mur River, this ultra-modern, bluish, amorphous architectural masterpiece hosts a rotating selection of contemporary art exhibitions. It provides a striking, deliberate contrast to the surrounding historical roofs. Murinsel (Island in the Mur): An artificial, floating steel platform shaped like a giant seashell, linked to both sides of the river by footbridges. Designed by American artist Vito Acconci, it houses an ultra-modern cafe and a small open-air amphitheater. Eggenberg Palace (Schloss Eggenberg): Located on the western edge of the city (easily accessible by tram), this breathtaking 17th-century Baroque palace is built on a precise cosmological layout. It features 365 exterior windows, 31 rooms per floor, and 24 state rooms to mirror the calendar year. The surrounding park is famous for its freely roaming peacocks. The "Free Tram": Graz offers a fantastic perk for tourists: tram rides between the Hauptplatz and Jakominiplatz (plus one additional stop in every direction) are completely free of charge, allowing you to hop on and off across the absolute core of the old town without a ticket. #citycenter #travel

Some moments are best captured slowly, and Altausseer See is one of those places. Nestled in the Styrian Salzkammergut and surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Totes Gebirge, this beautiful mountain lake offers a peaceful combination of crystal-clear water, forested shores, and rugged Alpine scenery. On calm days, the lake becomes a natural mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountains and changing skies. Walking along the lakeshore reveals a succession of beautiful viewpoints, from tranquil woodland paths to open panoramas across the water. 🌲🏞️ The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. In summer, deep greens frame the blue lake, while autumn brings golden and copper foliage that adds an especially atmospheric touch. Misty mornings and soft evening light can make the landscape feel almost dreamlike. 🍂✨ A lakeside walk here is less about rushing from one viewpoint to another and more about enjoying the silence, fresh mountain air, and ever-changing reflections on the water. It is an ideal destination for nature lovers, photographers, hikers, and anyone looking for a peaceful Alpine escape. 📍 Altausseer See, Styria, Austria 🇦🇹 🏔️ Alpine lake surrounded by the Totes Gebirge 🌲 Scenic lakeside walking paths 📸 Beautiful throughout the year, especially in autumn 💙 A perfect place to slow down and enjoy Austria's natural beauty #AltausseerSee #Austria #Styria #Salzkammergut #AustrianAlps #AlpineLakes #MountainLake #AustriaTravel #NatureLovers #AutumnInAustria #LakeViews #TravelPhotography #EuropeTravel #HiddenGems #Tripcom

Graz: the "City of Enjoyment" If Vienna is Austria's elegant face, then Graz is that "hidden gem" that gets more addictive the longer you stay, making it hard to leave. It is Austria's second-largest city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, a UNESCO "City of Design," and is also known as the "Culinary Capital of Austria." But more captivating than these titles is its inherent Southern European charm—a touch of Italian-style laid-back energy, while retaining Austrian composure. Graz is understated, yet captivating at every turn. It’s like a perfect espresso—intense, vibrant, and with a lingering finish. ⛰️ PART 01. You can "hit the mountains" right in the city Few cities can offer this: a UNESCO World Heritage old town on one side, and urban green spaces where you can hike on the other. But Graz is that kind of place. The Schlossberg is right in the heart of the old town—you can walk up, take the funicular, or even slide down from the top. That’s right, "The Slide," the world's longest indoor slide, takes you from the Schlossberg all the way back into the city. It’s thrilling and fun—guaranteed to make both adults and kids laugh out loud. From the city center, you can easily reach popular hiking destinations like Leechwald, Rosenberg, and Platte. All trailheads are accessible by public transport. Whether you're looking for a casual stroll or a serious mountain hike, Graz has you covered. If you're traveling with kids, there's the Frida & Fred Children's Museum, the 4D flight cinema "The Flight," the Schlossberg fairy tale train, and more. Graz's family-friendliness exceeds expectations. 💫 PART 02. Art and design are part of daily life in Graz In 2003, Graz was the "European Capital of Culture." Since then, the city has been proving that culture doesn't have to be highbrow—it can be young, wild, and fun. From the La Strada street art festival and the springfestival electronic music festival to the styriarte classical music festival and the Diagonale Austrian film festival, there’s always an event waiting for you year-round. As a "City of Design," Graz offers a unique shopping experience: instead of cookie-cutter chain stores, you'll find independent boutiques featuring designer clothing, ceramics, jewelry, and home decor—each piece carrying the warmth of being handmade. 🚵 PART 03. Day trips in the surrounding area are richer than you'd expect A half-hour drive from Graz takes you to the South Styria wine region. Rolling vineyards, warm sunshine, authentic rural taverns, and a glass of local wine paired with a "Brettljause" cold platter—this is the most authentic taste of Styria. If you want to see a more "hardcore" side of Austria, visit the Piber Lipizzaner Stud, where the star horses of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna are born. Or visit Stift Rein, one of the world's oldest Cistercian monasteries, which has been operating for 900 years. For movie buffs, one place is worth a special trip: the Arnold Schwarzenegger Museum in Thal, near Graz. Do you remember that line, "I'll be back"? 🎄 PART 04. Graz during the Christmas season is worth a special trip Every year from Nov 20 to Dec 24, Graz transforms into a Christmas city. There are 16 Christmas markets concentrated in the old town, all within walking distance. The Christmas market at the Main Square is the heart of it all, where the City Hall's daily projections turn it into a giant "Advent calendar." The Christmas village at Karmeliterplatz is quieter, perfect for those looking to avoid the crowds. The "Wonderlend" winter wonderland at Mariahilferplatz is younger and more avant-garde, with modern lighting and atmosphere. And the ice nativity scene in the Landhaushof—the city's largest indoor courtyard—is carved from 40 tons of ice and offers a truly unique experience. There’s also the "Advent Bim"—a vintage tram decorated with lights that slowly travels through the old town, creating an incredibly romantic atmosphere. 🏵️ PART 05. 2026 Highlights: BLOOM Flowers symbolize peace, reflect the fragility of life, and carry the spirit of the Enlightenment. In 2026, the Universalmuseum Joanneum and the Kunsthaus Graz will jointly launch the annual theme project "BLOOM," exploring the significance of flowers to humanity through the lenses of culture, science, and society. Ten diverse exhibitions will explore the narrative from multiple angles: how flowers connect different cultures and played a role in colonial expansion; how they inspire scientific discovery while fueling myths and imagination; and how they accompany humans on the journey from birth to death. From March 21 to November 8, 2026, BLOOM invites you to get closer to flowers and rediscover the hidden, profound bond between them and us. Coming up in Graz: Steirischer herbst: September 24–October 18, 2026 Trüffelfestival: October 21–October 31, 2026 Klanglicht: October 23–October 26, 2026 ℹ️ PART 06. Practical travel tips Things to know before visiting Graz: ▫️Weekend package: Book designated partner accommodations to enjoy a "stay 3, pay 2" offer, plus a complimentary Graz Card and shopping discounts; ▫️Graz Card: Available for 24/48/72 hours, includes public transport and admission to multiple attractions; ▫️Use the "Graz Uncovered" app to explore Graz; ▫️Free old town tram: Explore Graz conveniently and with zero emissions; ▫️Bicycle-friendly city: Graz is one of Austria's most bike-friendly cities; the Mur River bike path is worth experiencing; ▫️Surrounding hikes: The Graz mountain hiking trail is divided into 6 sections, each 14–20 km long, suitable for multi-day hiking. #easytravelpost Slivnica is the witch-mountain above Lake Cerknica, but the thermal shore I wanted was the lesser-known spring line on the north bay where groundwater surfaces at 14°C year-round. I based in Cerknica (bus from Ljubljana 50 min, 5 EUR), rented a bike, and rode 9 km to the lake's north end. The "lake" is a polje—dry in August, flooded in spring—so I went mid-June and hit the sweet spot: knee-deep water, floating reed islands, and a cliff foot of Triassic limestone where moss drips into the thermal trickle. No ticket, no booth. The Styrian side means the Styria region border is 4 km east; the shore itself is Notranjska. I soaked my feet at the spring (too cold for full bath, despite "thermal"), then hiked the Slivnica ridge trail (2 h to 1114 m summit, where locals say witches gather on Kresni dan). The cliff base had old man's beard lichen and sphagnum mixed—unusual for karst. Carry water; the spring is mineral but not potable without boiling. Bike back before dark, the polje has no lights and fog rolls fast. Mistake: I trusted a "thermal beach" label from an old blog—there's no beach, just a rock shelf. Pack sandals with grip, not swim fins. Payment in Cerknica is card-friendly except the fruit stalls (cash euro). Rule: Notranjska Regional Park asks you not to drive onto the polje when it's wet—you'll sink a wheel in the loam. Should a thermal spring that's too cold to bathe in still be called a spa, or just a cold kiss from the mountain?

Austria has Vienna and Salzburg. But in the south, near the Slovenian border, lies a city that blends imperial grandeur with youthful energy. Graz is a UNESCO-listed old town, a university city, and a design capital. Its streets are filled with Renaissance courtyards, baroque facades, and futuristic architecture. The River Mur flows through the center, and a hilltop clock tower keeps watch. Here is how to explore Austria's second city and save money with Trip.com. 1. The Old Town at Dawn: Courtyards and Cobblestones Graz's old town is a maze of narrow streets, hidden courtyards, and arcaded passages. By 10 AM, the streets fill with shoppers and tour groups. Come at 6:30 AM instead. The stone glows in the soft light. The courtyards are empty. You will hear only the echo of your footsteps and the distant chime of church bells. It feels like walking through a living museum. Pro Tip: Download the Trip.com offline map for Graz. It shows you the hidden courtyards that most tourists miss. The best are on Herrengasse and Sporgasse, where Renaissance arches lead to quiet gardens and ancient stairwells. 2. The Clock Tower: The Symbol of the City On the Schlossberg hill above the city stands the Uhrturm, the clock tower that has watched over Graz for centuries. The climb is steep but short, or you can take the funicular. From the top, the view is stunning. The red roofs of the old town spread below, the Mur River winds through the valley, and the hills rise in the distance. The clock hands are reversed — the larger one shows the hours, a historical quirk that confuses visitors to this day. Money Hack: Take the funicular up but walk down. The funicular costs a few euros and saves your legs. The walk down is beautiful and free. Check Trip.com for a "Graz Schlossberg Experience" that includes the funicular and a coffee at the top. The view is best at sunset. 3. The Kunsthaus: The Friendly Alien Graz's most controversial building is the Kunsthaus, a blob-like structure of blue glass that locals call the Friendly Alien. It sits on the banks of the Mur, a stark contrast to the red roofs around it. Inside, the museum hosts contemporary art exhibitions. Even if you do not enter, the building itself is worth seeing. It is a reminder that Graz is not stuck in the past. Budget Advice: Skip the museum if contemporary art is not your thing. The exterior is free to admire. Walk across the Murinsel, a floating island bridge designed for the city's year as European Capital of Culture. It is free and offers a unique view of the Kunsthaus from the water. Check Trip.com for a "Design Walk Graz" that includes both landmarks and the old town. 4. Food That Tastes Like Styria Styrian cuisine is hearty and flavorful. Try Kürbiskernöl — pumpkin seed oil, a dark green oil drizzled over salads and soups. Order Backhendl — crispy fried chicken, an Austrian classic. And do not miss Steirisches Wurzelfleisch — pork cooked in root vegetables, served with horseradish. Where to Eat: Skip the restaurants on the main square. Walk to Der Steirer or Glöckl Bräu, where locals eat. The food is excellent, and the prices are fair. Check Trip.com for set menu deals — some places include a glass of local Schilcher wine when you book through the app. Where to Stay? Book on Trip.com a guesthouse in the old town. Look for something on Sporgasse or near the Landeszeughaus. You will sleep in a building with high ceilings, wooden floors, and a view of the red rooftops. The evenings are quiet after the shops close, and the streets are lit by lanterns. Conclusion: Graz is not trying to be Vienna. It is its own city, with its own rhythm. It is a place where students bike through medieval streets, where modern art sits beside Renaissance towers, and where the clock tower watches over it all. It is a city of courtyards and coffee, of pumpkin oil and design. Austria is a country of beauty, but Graz is its creative heart. Come and see for yourself. The clock is ticking. #trip_com #Austria #Graz #graztravel #AustriaHiddenGems #Styria #Schlossberg #BudgetTravel #EuropeGuide #traveleurope #unesco #KunsthausGraz #ClockTower #AustrianDesign #MurRiver

Styria Culinary Tour 🍷 01. Wine Tasting Before Dining A revolutionary tasting experience is about to begin. Three outstanding winemakers from Styria—Tement, Engel, and Langmann—have each selected a representative wine embodying the local terroir and craftsmanship. Austrian chef Heinz Reitbauer, inspired by the wine, creates dishes that complement it, aiming to enhance and elevate the wine's deeper flavors, engaging in a dialogue of tastes. ▫️Tement Family Winery "Winemaking means living in harmony with nature." A single drop of wine reflects the soul of South Styria. Founded in 1959 by Josef Tement and passed down through the Manfred family, the Tement family winery is now managed by the third generation—Stephen, Armin, and his wife Monica. They have brought the flavors of this land to international acclaim. The winery adheres to a close-to-nature philosophy, prioritizing the expression of terroir. Their core Sauvignon Blanc, grown on the Ziereggg and Grassnitzberg plots, showcases exceptional minerality and complexity. Since 2020, the winery has been officially certified by Demeter and has joined the "respekt-BIODYN" alliance, infusing its sustainable farming philosophy into every inch of the land. ▫️Weingut Langmann Lex Winery The Langmann family's vineyards are situated in one of Austria's most rugged and steep grape-growing regions, offering breathtaking views at stunning angles. Located at the foot of the Koralpe mountain in West Styria, the crisp Alpine climate and clear air nurture grapes with distinctive character. For 250 years, the Langmann family has been dedicated to cultivating the native Blauer Wildbacher variety to produce the distinctive Schilcher rosé wine. In addition, thanks to West Styria's cool climate and ideal soil conditions, the Langmann family also focuses on growing Sauvignon Blanc and producing sparkling wines. ▫️Weingut Engel Winery “Our wines are slices of time sealed in a bottle. The soil that nourishes them is the frame, and the wine is the landscape within that frame.” Located in the Styria volcanic region, Weingut Engel Winery is a place where bold ideas and passionate dedication combine to create vibrant flavors. Owner Simon Engel, a former musician, transformed his parents' farm in Tieschen into an organic winery now renowned for its unique wines. He and his wife, Andrea, live and work here, respecting the laws of nature while boldly breaking conventions to create flavors unique to this volcanic land. 🖥️ 02.
