We're not skiers, but we've been to the Rosa Khutor resort twice. We especially like it in the summer. The air is clean, there aren't many people (or maybe we were just lucky), and the hotels are adequate. We stayed for 3-5 days. Longer stays would be boring (in my opinion), but you can spend part of your vacation actively: take the cable car up the mountains, ride the toboggan run, hike the trails, and enjoy the beauty of the mountains. In the evening, you can sit in a café on the waterfront. There's also a water park, casino, and other entertainment nearby. We split our Sochi vacation between the mountains and the sea, so there was no need to go to the sea (we later booked a hotel by the sea), but if necessary, you can get to the sea by train or take buses from the hotels. When I stroll along the Sochi embankment, I'm always drawn to the port. Not to the beaches, not to the cafes—but to this white building with a spire, visible from anywhere in the center. It's stood here for 70 years, and it seems timeless. The same columns, the same spire, the same star on top. A little history: how the resort's main gate was built Sochi's seaport was built in 1955. The project was designed by academician of architecture Karo Alabyan, architect Leonid Karlik, and engineer Alexander Kuzmin. The style is Stalinist Empire—massive, solemn, and imperially grand. Originally, the building was conceived with a bronze sail on top, but Khrushchev disliked the idea. Alabyan was then summoned, and he reportedly snapped: "Perhaps a star, like the one in Bethlehem?!" Ultimately, the top was redesigned many times until the 36-meter spire with a five-pointed star was finally approved—the very one visible today from several kilometers away. What's there to see? The building's façade features sculptures by Vladimir Ingal. Four of the figures symbolize the cardinal directions, and four more symbolize the seasons. The idea is simple, but it works: standing below, looking up, you realize the architects carefully considered every detail. In front of the entrance is a "Navigation" fountain with a goddess of navigation. Flowers and palm trees surround it, and the building lights up in the evening. In 2008, the building even appeared on a coin (issued on Niue Island), albeit with a misspelling of the city's name. Little-known facts that will surprise even the locals In 1942, long before the station was built, kamikaze dolphins were trained in the port waters. They were trained to defuse mines and blow up enemy ships. Bottlenose dolphins swam with 15-kilogram explosive belts. They were never used in combat, but some of the animals were later released into the sea. The famous scene of Semyon Semyonovich's farewell in "The Diamond Arm" was filmed at the port. The hero waves a handkerchief, the ship sails away—and the whole country knows where it happened. And back in 1962, poet Konstantin Vanshenkin jotted down some verses right there in the waiting room, and composer Arkady Ostrovsky composed the music right there while strolling along the pier. This is how the song "How Ships Are Seen Off" performed by Eduard Khil was born. What's playing at the port now The seaport building is a federal architectural monument, and restoration work is ongoing. By the end of 2024, the façade and sculptures were renovated, but inside, in some places, the feeling remains that time has stood still. Old chandeliers, stucco ceilings, and tall doors. The port itself is operational. Pleasure boats and ships depart from here for Novorossiysk and other cities. Yachts are moored—regular visitors to the local marina. Important tips for those visiting The port is open 24 hours a day, and admission is free. · When to visit: The best time is in the evening, closer to sunset. The sun sets behind the lighthouse, the building is illuminated with a warm glow, and the yachts in the harbor are reflected in the water. Beautiful. If you come during the day, it will be hot and the views flat. · Bring your own things. Coffee, a city map, and some free time. And, if you have one, a camera with a good lens. A mobile phone is fine, but it can be tricky in the twilight. · Access. The main entrance is from the embankment. If you need specific ticket offices or flight schedules, it's best to enter from Voikova Street and check on site. So what's the bottom line? The Port of Sochi isn't just about sailing. For locals, it's a monument, for tourists, a dot on the map, and for me, a place where I can just stand, watch the waves, and remember why people go to the sea in the first place. The ground-level view only shows a partial scene, but from the upper floors of these two hotels, you can see the cityscape of Sochi and the Black Sea. Watching snow-capped mountains from the sea and clouds and sea from the mountains truly brings the scenery to life! Gazing from afar, sipping coffee, and chatting during a break is simply wonderful. Unlike the high mountain snow areas, the weather here is mild and cool. We quickly headed to the amusement park to enjoy the most thrilling giant pendulum and roller coaster rides, leaving our awe and screams in this Winter Olympic city of Sochi!

Stalin's Former Residence. This Stalin Jungle Villa, built in 1936, has stood guard in this forested mountain area for 90 years. The natural jungle and high mountains provide excellent protection for the villa, acting like a natural barrier. Previously, the yard was paved with stones to prevent intrusions. Any sound would trigger an immediate response. According to the on-site guide, although there have been some incidents before, they were well prevented, and everything remained safe and normal. In Stalin's courtyard, looking at the dense trees, breathing in the fresh air brought by the rain, and listening to waves of visitors whispering, it feels as if every blade of grass and tree is a scene from the last century. Only the people have changed; visitors come here to pay tribute and consider deep experience as part of their remembrance. Inside the villa, you can see the study, bedroom, reception room, sentry office, indoor swimming pool, dining room, and other public areas. Photos of Stalin with his family, friends, and colleagues serve as the best clues to recalling his life experiences. There are also several photos capturing moments when he met and communicated with Chairman Mao, preserving those memories in time. At the entrance, a performer impersonating Stalin sits quietly. Some visitors pay to take photos with him and occasionally exchange a few words. This is perhaps one of the few interactive experiences at Stalin's former residence. It is worth mentioning that the villa also sells the same type of high mountain green tea that Stalin once drank, which you might want to take some of. Stalin actually has two former residences. Besides the jungle sanatorium villa in Sochi, there is also a memorial museum in Gori, Georgia, where he was born. That museum also holds memories of gifts exchanged between Chairman Mao and Stalin during their friendship and communication.

Sochi is a unique place where you can ski in the mountains in the morning and stroll among the palm trees by the sea in the evening in a single day. For ease of planning, we'll divide the region into three main clusters: Adler (Sirius), Krasnaya Polyana, and Central Sochi. I visited Sochi as a child, then during the COVID year, and then two years ago. I remember my first visit to Sochi – it was a small village nestled in the hills, and now it's the country's main seaside resort and mountain resort. 1. Adler and Sirius (Coastal Cluster) This is where the Olympic legacy and the best modern embankments are concentrated. Olympic Park. See the Fisht, Shayba, and Bolshoi stadiums. The main spectacle is the dancing fountains in the Olympic cauldron (the show usually starts in the evening, the schedule varies seasonally). Sochi Park. Russian Disneyland. A huge amusement park themed after Russian fairy tales. Ideal for families with children and adrenaline junkies (the Quantum Leap and Zmey Gorynych roller coasters). Imeretinskaya Embankment: The longest (7 km) and well-maintained promenade area with dedicated bike paths. There are no breakwaters or railway along the shore, creating a feeling of spaciousness. 2. Krasnaya Polyana Even if you don't ski or snowboard, the views and fresh air are worth the climb. The cluster consists of three independent resorts: Rosa Khutor: This is the most popular. Stroll along the Mzymta River embankment past the town hall with its clock. Climb to Rosa Peak (2,320 m) to swing on the "swing above the clouds" or cross the suspension bridge. Mendelikha Waterfalls Park (open in summer). Krasnaya Polyana Resort (formerly Gorki Gorod): Home to the "upper town" at an altitude of 960 meters (3,100 ft), boasting photogenic architecture. Arboretum: A vast collection of rare plants from around the world. The best way to explore is by cable car to the top and then walk back down. Stalin's Dacha: Situated in a picturesque spot on a mountainside. The original interiors and atmosphere of the period have been preserved. Turkey gently connects the continents of Europe and Asia with a single strait, just like the city’s name, Istanbul. “Bosphorus” sounds a bit exotic and tongue-twisting, yet it hides the most unique geographical miracle. The Bosphorus Strait is 31.5 kilometers long, with a maximum width of only 3.7 kilometers and a narrowest point of just 747 meters. It is famously known as the “throat of the world.” Since ancient times, it has been the only passage from the Black Sea countries to the Mediterranean. On both shores, from the Ottoman Empire’s palaces and Rumeli Fortress—thousand-year-old relics—to Istanbul’s upscale neighborhoods and the bridges spanning the strait, layers of history unfold, making this Bosphorus cruise the most iconic travel experience in Istanbul. This strait has never been just a geographical boundary; it is a millennium-old crossroads of Eastern and Western culture, history, and geopolitics. The harbor square is crowded with shops and tourists, the buildings along the coast bathed in golden sunset light, and even the wind carries a romantic atmosphere. The cruise slowly moves forward, and the scenery on both sides glides past the ship. Gradually, the bridge appears—a distant gray arc stretching across the strait, massive and silent, unassuming. Up close, two towering pillars rise, steel cables fanning out from the tops like two open fans, suspending the entire bridge in the air—this is the July 15 Martyrs Bridge, officially opened in 1973 as the first bridge connecting the continents of Europe and Asia. Today, there are three bridges over the strait, each with its own name and history. Standing on the ship looking up at this bridge, I feel an indescribable emotion—smallness, yet pride—that humanity has truly connected two continents. A white line runs down the center of the bridge deck; west of the line is Europe, east is Asia. Standing on the cruise deck, the Galata Tower and Golden Horn are on the left in Europe, and the Anatolian coast is on the right in Asia. The wind blows through the strait, carrying the essence of both continents. This marvelous feeling of “stepping into two continents” is beyond words. Speaking of Turkey, it’s a country hard to sum up in a few sentences. Ninety-seven percent of its territory lies in Asia, yet it has always yearned to integrate with Europe; it is a crossroads where Eastern and Western civilizations have collided for thousands of years, yet it forever lingers between East and West. The Bosphorus Strait is the most vivid footnote to this contradiction and fusion. As the ship sails through this vital waterway, I recall a story etched in the memories of our people: the “Varyag” warship, purchased long ago, was blocked by Turkey here for a year and a half and only allowed to pass through the strait under Greece’s guarantee. From being trapped in the Black Sea to rebirth, this stretch of water has witnessed our perseverance and hardships. Seagulls circle overhead, fishermen cast their lines, and the wind blows through the strait, carrying the spirit of Eurasia. The dancer uses the body as an axis, reaching near-divine tranquility through continuous spinning. At that moment, I suddenly understood that Turkey’s blue is not only between the sky and sea but also deeply rooted in faith and tradition⓴(bottom).
