Getting There - Train : from hakata station to Fukko-Daimae Station. Then use North Exit. / Bus : 100 Yen (❌ IC card not accepted) / Ferry ⛴️ 480 Yen (Price of a one-way ticket) / Attractions - 🐱 Hotels - ❌ Food & Restaurants - There aren’t many restaurants, and you should check their opening hours on the day you visit. Shopping - ❌ Getting There: 🚞 Take a train from Hakata Station and get off at Fukko-Daimae Station. Exit through the North Exit and walk to the bus stop. When I went, there were a lot of people lining up most of them were also heading to the cat island. 🚌 Look for the bus with a sign that says Ainoshima Tosenba (Ainoshima Ferry Terminal). Ride it to the last stop. The bus fare is 100 yen (IC cards are not accepted). ⛴️ The ferry to the island runs on a set schedule. Tickets are purchased from a vending machine. I took the 11:30 AM ferry to the island and returned at 1:50 PM. Tickets must be purchased one way at a time there are no round-trip tickets. For the return trip, you’ll need to buy your ticket at the island right before you head back. I went to "VICINO", an Italian restaurant located in Urban Mall Shingu Chuo, near IKEA in Fukuoka Prefecture, about a 5-minute walk from Shingu Chuo Station, for lunch with a friend😊 ݇- This restaurant has a wood-fired oven inside the restaurant, so you can eat authentic pizza🍕 They have a wide variety of pizza and pasta menus, so I couldn't decide which one to get, but this time I ordered "Quattro Formaggi" and "Sea Urchin and Green Laver Cream Pasta" and shared them😋 ݇- The pizza was topped with honey🍯, and the sweetness of the mozzarella cheese and the sweetness of the honey worked together, and the basil was a nice accent, making it a happy taste😳💓 I ordered 1.5 times the amount of pasta (+200 yen) and it was a creamy pasta with a chewy fettuccine noodle and a great aroma of green laver and sea urchin! Ainoshima Island, or Nekonoshima in Japanese, is a small island home to over a hundred cats, located just 7 km northeast of Fukuoka. The island is only 1.25 square kilometers, with a 6 km road encircling it, and a population of only 300 people, yet boasts an impressive 100 cats. These cats are kept by fishermen to help control rats and remove fish bones. Most of the cats on the island are strays, but the islanders care for them well and feed them at regular intervals. Basic guidelines for visiting the cat island: · Do not carry the cats far from where you found them, or move them between indoor and outdoor areas. · Do not trespass on the personal property of the island's residents. · Do not litter on the island. If you bring trash, please take it with you. Activities on the island mostly involve searching for, playing with, and taking pictures of the cats scattered throughout the island. Bicycles can be rented at the building near the pier to explore the island. There are also restaurants on the island, mostly with a casual, homey atmosphere. They serve seafood and other dishes. The restaurant offers a variety of local dishes, including rice bowls with raw fish, udon, ramen, hamburgers, shaved ice, etc., all made with fresh seafood caught daily by the locals. This ensures the food is always delicious and fresh. If you arrive early and don't want to wait for the shops to open, you can bring your own food and enjoy it on the island. They have seating areas scattered throughout the island. I tried the sashimi on the island. It didn't look very appetizing, but it was surprisingly clean. The dark bits were from the sauce, which was delicious with a slightly sweet flavor, unlike the sauces we're used to when eating sashimi. Most importantly, it's very cheap; the dish I saw was only 800 yen. Some houses are also open as accommodations for tourists to stay overnight. Staying there would be a wonderful experience. How to get there: 1. From JR Hakata station, take the train to JR Fukko-Daimae station. 2. Take the bus from the bus stop in front of the station to Shingu Port. The fare is only 100 yen. 3. Buy your ferry ticket (one way) from the vending machine. It costs 480 yen, but don't worry, a kind old man will help you purchase the ticket. For first-time tourists who might be a little hesitant: ---> Take the ferry to Ainoshima. The return trip is the same as the outbound trip, but they don't let you buy a round-trip ticket at once. You have to buy a separate ticket for the return trip because the time will be stamped on the ticket and collected by the staff. You can go up to the deck to enjoy the view. We took the 11:04 - 11:25 bus, which took about 10 minutes. We boarded the ferry at 11:30 - 11:47. Once we got off the ferry, the cats had already finished their lunch... Only a few came to greet the tourists. The rest had all gone off to take naps during the midday meal, leaving us to search for the cats playing hide-and-seek. Some tourists even brought toys to play with the cats. On the return trip, we took the 13:50 ferry. After all, we only managed to get pictures of sleeping cats. Tip: Avoid going on holidays. It's popular with young Japanese people, so there will be more people than cats. Even on a weekday, the bus was full, and they had to call in an extra bus. But if you miss the ferry, there are plenty of taxis waiting. Don't worry about missing the boat ride. If you go during cold but sunny weather, you'll find tons of cats sunbathing. Our first stop in Kyushu was Fukuoka. We stayed in Fukuoka for 4 days. Besides shopping, my favorite experiences were visiting Cat Island—Ainoshima—and watching a sunset full of light and shadow in Itoshima. Fukuoka left me with an impression of a blend of bustling city life and tranquility. The Tenjin shopping district, Hakata Station area, and Canal City are places where you can shop until your legs give out. If you get tired of shopping, it’s worth stepping out of the city center to experience Fukuoka’s slow life. Ainoshima (p7-12) was visited solely for the cats. Apart from the cats, there’s nothing else on the island that holds your attention. The cats are very gentle and can be petted freely. Ainoshima showed me a world where humans and cats coexist happily. The cats don’t belong to any household; cat food and little shelters are found everywhere on the island. They are not pets of anyone—they are island residents. They don’t have to give up their freedom for handouts. Fukuoka Art Museum (p4-6) and Ohori Park offer a peaceful retreat within the city’s hustle and bustle. For us, coming from Vancouver, a city park like Ohori Park isn’t particularly attractive. Adjacent to it, the Fukuoka Art Museum houses artworks from premodern Japan to contemporary Japan. If you’re not in a hurry, you can slowly enjoy everything from ancient Japanese Buddhist statues and tea utensils to contemporary art, including works by Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, and artists related to Kyushu. Of course, if you’re not interested in art, you can simply check out Yayoi Kusama’s pumpkin. Itoshima (p1-4) I call it a photo paradise. Besides the white torii gate, there’s the nearby Palm Beach, swings on the beach, and concrete pipes painted in rainbow colors—all perfect props for photos. My brief stay in Fukuoka was not enough to understand even one percent of it. Journeys are always too hurried.
