#easytravelpost Kenai Fjords National Park is mostly accessed by boat from Seward, but the one road-accessible piece is Exit Glacier. I drove the Exit Glacier Road, parked at the Nature Center, and started the Harding Icefield Trail from there. The trail is 4.1 miles one way, about 3,500 feet of gain, and it is listed as strenuous for good reason. The first mile is the Edge of the Glacier spur, family-friendly and flat. After that the real climb begins: a relentless switchback through alder, then onto open tundra with no shade, then onto loose rock and snow patches even in July. The top reveals the Harding Icefield, a white plateau stretching to the horizon with Exit Glacier spilling out of it like a slow blue tongue. I reached the marked overlook in 3 hours 20 minutes and sat for forty minutes because the wind was too strong to stand comfortably. No water on trail. I carried 3 liters and finished with less than half a liter. Bug repellent is essential near the tree line. Bear spray is advised; I saw fresh scat but no bear. The parking lot has a vault toilet and a ranger booth; cards work at the entrance station in Seward, but the trailhead itself has no services. Mistake: I started at 11 a.m. and the afternoon clouds rolled in, cutting the icefield view to thirty minutes. Start by 8 a.m. Would you trade a Kenai Fjords boat cruise for this climb, or do both on separate days?

The cruise is the marquee ($150 buys orcas + calving), the glacier walk is a free-ish add-on if you’re already in Seward. If budget-bound, skip the boat and do Exit Glacier + a harbor seal watch from the Seward waterfront. #July2025 My short 10-day trip to Alaska is over, and I'm back today to continue my work as a financial savior. I'm not in the mood for work, so I'll just write an incomplete travel guide— 📍Anghorage > King Salmon <> Katmai NP 🏷️ Brown bears, salmon As mentioned in my previous post dedicated to Katmai, we couldn't book a campsite, so we went on a two-day round trip to see brown bears and salmon. We flew to King Salmon the night before, landed at 8:00 AM the next day, and returned at 6:00 PM. We arrived at Brooks Falls around 9:00 AM, so we could see one or two brown bears at the falls before peak peak. After the crowds died down around 3:00 PM, we could continue exploring for another two hours. If time and budget allow, this is the recommended plan. 📍Anchorage <> Seward 🏷️ Kayaking, Wildlife Cruise, & Fishing From Anchorage, we took a bus to Seward. Seward is stunningly beautiful, with glaciers, snow-capped mountains, forests, and a variety of marine, land, and air animals. The weather was exceptionally good, and we thoroughly enjoyed kayaking, cruising, and fishing. In order of priority, kayaking > cruising > fishing. July is the only time humpback whales bubble-net feed, so I highly recommend visiting during this time, as you'll encounter them almost every day. Sitting in a kayak, gazing at the glaciers while sipping sandwiches and drinking hot tea is something I never imagined I'd experience. The 8.5-hour cruise was too long; I recommend opting for a shorter one. We took our catch to J Dock and sealed it in plastic before mailing it back to the Bay Area. We took the Gold Star Class train back home. I thought the panoramic sunroof would be the highlight of this car, but once on board, I realized the bleachers were the real deal. Excluding dinner, we stood for almost the entire four hours, enjoying the scenery. 📍Anchorage <> Denali NP 🏷️ Savage Alpine Trail Rent a car and drive. I recommend a lovely place to stay—Denali Perch Resort, with its rustic cabins nestled beside a beautiful creek. We hiked the Savage Alpine Trail within the park. The first half was quite steep, but the views were worth it. Unsurprisingly, we only saw half of Denali's summit, but given the 30% chance, we were quite content. However, after the rain cleared, we had a crystal-clear view of Denali from the backyard of our bed and breakfast (McKinsey View B&B)! Alaska calls itself the last frontier, and after visiting, I finally understood how rare it is to live in harmony with nature in this world.

Hey everyone 👋, I absolutely have to recommend this incredible road trip from Anchorage to Seward 🎉! This drive was my second favorite experience in Alaska, and it truly amazed me. If it weren't for the aurora, a natural wonder that's hard to come by, this road trip would definitely be my top pick 😆! Starting from Anchorage, the normal drive takes about 2.5 hours to reach the coastal town of Seward. But the scenery along the way was so breathtaking that we ended up driving for 5 hours, from dawn till dusk. We couldn't resist stopping at almost every bay and lakeside viewpoint to take photos. It was a truly wonderful experience. The road to Whittier was particularly stunning, with its unique, desolate, and serene atmosphere—absolutely amazing 🤩. We even saw a woman in her car, parked by the lake and mountains, listening to music and lost in her own world. It was a very picturesque scene. If you have the time, I highly recommend exploring every side road, as you might stumble upon some unexpected, beautiful scenery. However, since daylight hours are short in Alaska during winter, and we didn't want to drive at night, we had to reluctantly leave some places unexplored. By the way, the tunnel to Whittier is open on a timed schedule. If you plan to visit this unique town, where only a dozen or so people live in the same building, be sure to plan your trip in advance 🧐. We spotted a red and green house by the main road, radiating Christmas 🎄 vibes, and we were instantly drawn to it. We made a U-turn on the highway and trudged through the snow to the lake, where we were rewarded with a stunning sunset. We were so lucky! The first half of this road trip is on the highway, and the second half is on a secondary road. The overall road conditions are pretty good, although there's a short stretch that's a bit bumpy with some ice and snow. Fortunately, the traffic was light, making the drive relatively smooth. I recommend renting a car with snow tires for added safety. Important reminder: The speed limit in Seward's town center is 25 mph. It was already dark when we entered the town, and we completely missed the speed limit sign. We didn't realize we were speeding until we saw a police car silently following us with its lights flashing 🚨. We immediately pulled over. A kind, older policewoman checked our rental car information, gave us a few words of caution, and then let us go. Before leaving, she even helpfully recommended a local restaurant. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed for Christmas. We had no choice but to buy some food at a gas station. Our instant noodles, which we'd been carrying around, finally came in handy. Toured around Alaska for 9 days - landing in Anchorage, meeting the shy Mt. Denali (formerly Mt. Mckinley), getting close with the bears and foxes in Denali National Park, visiting the shops in Talkeetna, meeting reindeers in Butte, experiencing the Matanuska glaciers, cruising around the beautiful Valdez and getting up close with seals and whales, and kayaking in Seward. Seward is south of Alaska, next to Alaska Bay. The good location makes it a paradise for fishing and hiking in the mountains. Seward is a small seaside town where a large portion of local residents' income comes from catches. In the small port of Small Boat Harbor, it is almost occupied by ships of all sizes. I often see local people leading tourists to go fishing after fishing. You can also see for yourself how the locals deal with the fish that have just been caught. If you want to eat fresh fish, you can buy it on the spot, but it's really fresh and can't be fresh. In the Small Boat Harbor, I also saw a piece of "Before I die" filled with chopped nuts, to feel it. I saw an I want to eat all pies. How much food is there. All I used to visit Seward was public transportation + intercity bus transportation.
