We webt to Surabaya for 3 days and 2 nights for a short gateway from KL. It was an enjoyable trip where we were able to experience new places, foods, language and culture. Climate wise, not so much difference form KL but surprisingly less warmer than KL.

Indonesia has no shortage of volcanoes, but Mount Bromo has a landscape that refuses to blend in with the rest. Set inside the vast Tengger caldera in East Java, Bromo rises from a dark Sea of Sand with smoke drifting from its crater. Mount Batok stands beside it, while Mount Semeru appears in the distance. Put them together under the soft colours of sunrise, and the whole place feels almost unreal. To see Bromo at its best, however, the journey does not begin at sunrise. It begins before Surabaya has gone to sleep. You leave the city before midnight, drive through the darkness, change into a 4WD Jeep and continue along a cold, bumpy mountain road. Then, after hours of travelling, the black sky slowly begins to change colour. That is when you understand why so many people are willing to lose a full night of sleep for Mount Bromo. 📌 Bromo at a Glance · Located in East Java’s Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park · Around three hours or longer from Surabaya · Hotel pickup usually takes place between 11 pm and midnight · Main stops include the sunrise viewpoint, Sea of Sand and Bromo crater · Suitable for beginners, but the cold, dust, stairs and overnight journey can be tiring · Most tours without the waterfall return to Surabaya at around 11 am This is not an 11 hour hike. The total time includes the drive from Surabaya, the Jeep ride, waiting for sunrise, exploring the Sea of Sand and visiting the crater. Surabaya or Malang? If distance is the only concern, Malang is closer. The journey from Malang to Bromo can take around two hours, while travelling from Surabaya usually takes more than three hours, depending on traffic and the pickup location. For the whole trip, though, I find Surabaya more practical. I spent four days in Surabaya, and it never felt like a city that should be treated as a quick transit stop. Flight connections are convenient, there are plenty of affordable hotels, and finding restaurants, cafés and shopping areas is easy. Tunjungan Plaza and the surrounding city centre also give you something to enjoy before or after the Bromo trip. Malang wins on road time. Surabaya wins on convenience. If you are planning flights, accommodation, shopping and Bromo together, Surabaya can be the easier base, as long as you do not mind the longer night drive. 🌙 The Journey Before Sunrise Most Bromo tours collect guests from their Surabaya hotels between 11 pm and midnight. From there, it takes roughly three hours or longer to reach the area near the foot of the mountain. You will then transfer to a 4WD Jeep for the climb towards the sunrise viewpoint. The road is rough, full of bends and very different from a smooth city drive. If you get motion sickness easily, it is worth taking your usual medication beforehand. You may arrive at the viewpoint between 3 am and 4 am, while the surroundings are still completely dark. This is also when the mountain air feels coldest. Bring a proper jacket, gloves and something to cover your head. Warm clothing may be available to rent locally, but having your own is more comfortable. Small stalls around the viewpoint often sell hot noodles, cocoa and snacks, which are especially welcome while waiting in the cold. The sky usually begins changing colour from around 4:30 am, although the exact timing depends on the season. As daylight spreads across the caldera, Bromo, Batok and Semeru slowly appear through the morning mist. One small detail surprises many first time visitors. The perfectly shaped cone in the classic Bromo view is usually Mount Batok. Mount Bromo is the lower volcano beside it, with the wide crater and smoke rising from inside. 🌋 After Sunrise The adventure is not over once the sunrise photos are taken. The Jeep continues down into the Sea of Sand, a wide volcanic plain where colourful 4WD vehicles line up beneath the surrounding mountains. It is one of the most recognisable scenes at Bromo and a great place for Jeep photography. Horses are also available for those who do not want to walk across the entire sandy plain. They can take you closer to the crater, but they cannot carry you all the way to the top. You will still need to climb close to 250 steps to reach the crater rim. The climb is not extremely difficult, but it can feel much harder after travelling all night. Volcanic dust is another challenge, so bring a mask or a scarf to cover your nose and mouth. You may also pass Pura Luhur Poten in the Sea of Sand. This Hindu temple is an important spiritual place for the local Tenggerese community, so it should be treated respectfully even when the surroundings are busy with tourists. 📸 Photography and Drone Services Local photographers and drone operators can often be found around the viewpoint or Sea of Sand. A drone video gives you a completely different view of the volcanic plain, the Jeeps and the mountains from above. Before agreeing to the service, ask about the price, video length, number of clips and how the files will be delivered. Drone availability can depend on the weather, wind conditions and park regulations, and it normally costs extra. For Travellers Who Are Afraid of Heights Being afraid of heights does not mean you have to miss Mount Bromo. Some sunrise viewpoints have steep paths, crowded sections and cliff edges with limited barriers. Stay away from the edge, choose a safer viewing spot and let your guide know that you are uncomfortable with heights. The crater rim may also feel intimidating after climbing the stairs. There is no need to force yourself to continue if you do not feel safe. The sunrise viewpoint and Sea of Sand already offer some of Bromo’s most memorable scenery, even without standing beside the crater. 🌊 Make Time for Madakaripura Waterfall If you still have enough time and energy after Bromo, consider adding Madakaripura Waterfall to the trip. Hidden between towering canyon walls, the waterfall offers a completely different side of East Java. After the dry, dusty volcanic landscape of Bromo, walking beneath green cliffs and falling water feels like entering another world. Reaching the inner waterfall area involves some walking, and you should expect to get wet. Wear shoes with a good grip and protect your phone, camera and belongings with a waterproof bag. Bromo is already a tiring overnight journey, so Madakaripura does not have to be included. But if your schedule allows it, seeing both the volcano and the waterfall in one trip makes the long journey even more rewarding. It will also mean returning to Surabaya later than a regular Bromo tour. 💰 Estimated Tour Prices · Shared tour: around S$65 to S$70 per person · Private tour: around S$135 to S$140 or more Prices can vary depending on the pickup point, group size and what is included. Before booking, confirm whether the national park entrance ticket, Surabaya hotel transfer, Jeep and local guide are part of the package. The main reason to consider this hotel is its balance of location and price. It is close to Tunjungan Plaza, making it convenient for shopping, restaurants and cafés. This works especially well if you want to spend some time exploring Surabaya instead of using the city only as a departure point for Bromo. A room may cost around US$19 per night. Rates can change depending on your travel date, so it is best to enter your dates and check the latest price on Trip.com. You can also compare flights and hotels there while planning the trip. Useful Bromo Tips · May to October generally offers a better chance of dry weather and clearer mornings, but sunrise is never guaranteed. · Bring a warm jacket, gloves, a mask, comfortable shoes and drinking water. · Carry a little Indonesian rupiah for local stalls, horse rides and small extra expenses. · Take motion sickness medication if rough roads usually affect you. · Be careful near crowded viewpoints and cliff edges, especially in the dark. · Mount Bromo is an active volcano, so check the latest weather, volcanic activity and park status before leaving. What stays with you from Mount Bromo is not only the sunrise photo. It is the midnight pickup, the bouncing Jeep, the cold air, the hot drink in your hands and the moment the mountains slowly appear from the darkness. Had a lovely time at The Alchemist at Khong Yuan Biscuit. ☕✨ It’s more than just a café — I really enjoyed the way the place blends modern café culture with the charm and heritage of the old building. The space has preserved some of the original heritage elements and character of the building, while incorporating a modern and cozy café setting. It gives the place a unique atmosphere and makes the visit feel a little more special. We enjoyed a cup of coffee with some light bites, and it was a relaxing place to sit down and take a break. A lovely spot for coffee, light food and a touch of local heritage. Definitely worth visiting if you enjoy places with a story and character. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My visit to The Duck King at Tunjungan Plaza was all about their signature roasted ducks—and they did not disappoint! The roast duck arrived with beautifully crisp, caramelised skin while the meat underneath remained tender, juicy and flavourful. The contrast between the crispy skin and succulent meat made every bite satisfying. Served with fragrant rice and complemented by the restaurant’s sauces, it was an indulgent meal after exploring one of Surabaya’s most popular shopping destinations. This time, I took an unconventional route and turned the trip into an "island sports training camp"—hiking and diving, unlocking a different way to experience the island through sports. · Started training right after landing! Took a few laps swimming in the waters of Nusa Dua first; the sea feels way more exciting than a pool. After getting out, I stretched with a yoga instructor to relax my muscles and get ready for more action. In the afternoon, I grabbed a board to surf, and the moment the waves splashed on my face, all the stress just vanished. · Of course, hardcore activities aside, the classic sights can’t be missed. · The Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue is huge and impressive, and every shot at Ubud Palace looks like a postcard. Took a stroll through the Ubud Market, where the handmade crafts were quite interesting. The rice terraces are truly beautiful, with an unreal shade of green, and the cliffside sea views at Nusa Penida are simply divine—you’d regret not climbing up for the view here. · Highly recommend a trip to Surabaya; it’s just a one-hour ferry ride from Bali. Both Mount Bromo and Mount Ijen are worth visiting! Climbing the volcanoes is exhausting, but watching the sunrise from the summit makes it all worthwhile. After descending, wander around Tunjungan Old Street, full of local life and atmosphere—it’s so refreshing. · This time, I chose AirAsia again! Departing from Guangzhou with a stopover in Kuala Lumpur, leaving half a day to explore—checked in at the Petronas Twin Towers and caught a glimpse of the Pink Mosque. The stopover didn’t slow down the fun. From there, you can continue flying to places like Surabaya and Bangkok, with plenty of routes making travel smooth. · AirAsia’s DIY model really gets me. No forced baggage fees; you just pick what you need, no extra charges for unused allowances. The flight attendants are warm but not overbearing, making the flight comfortable. I had such a fantastic time having my first birthday dinner with friends today! It was an absolute bliss to enjoy a spectacular travel-inspired dinner and receive a gorgeous birthday cake. Tonight, we revisited the Royal Plaza Hotel for one of my favorites: the Lion Rock private dining! They just launched a brand-new Asian-flavored "Lion Rock Omakase" in August. We were seated in a private dining room for our meal! The high level of privacy definitely made the dining experience even more enjoyable. Since the summer days are longer, arriving at 7 PM meant we could still catch a glimpse of the iconic Lion Rock mountain. Once everyone arrived, the 9-course "Wandering Tastes.Alley Hunting" dinner officially kicked off! The starter was a fusion trio: Hanoi Spring Roll, Korean Pickled Scallop, and Pratunam Hainanese Chicken. Hanoi Spring Roll! The golden, crispy net-wrapper was stuffed with minced pork, shredded mushrooms, and carrots. Every bite was delightfully crunchy and bursting with rich, savory flavors. Pratunam Hainanese Chicken! The chicken was incredibly tender and flavorful as expected, but the soy sauce jelly on top was absolutely stunning—eating them together highlighted the chicken's taste brilliantly and was so fun. Korean Pickled Scallop! The sweet, tender, and charming scallop was prepared using Korean pickling techniques. Upon tasting, it offered a burst of umami followed by a mellow, subtle kick of spice. As a fan of Korean flavors, this left me highly satisfied. Lion City ~ Chinatown.Sambal.Tiger Prawn Ball! The plump, meaty tiger prawn was super bouncy and fresh. Slow-cooked with sambal, it packed an irresistibly appetizing punch. The base of okra, red onions, eggplants, and baby corn soaked up the rich sambal sauce, delivering a strong, authentic taste of Singapore. Tsukiji ~ Japanese Sake.Kelp.Seaweed.Sea Cucumber Soup! A bowl of soup brimming with the fresh, briny essence of the ocean. It tasted incredibly clean and fresh, featuring crunchy, gelatinous sea cucumber that added a rich texture while being great for beauty. Brunei ~ Basil.Green Curry.Marble Goby! The marble goby steak was fried to absolute crispiness while the meat remained incredibly tender and smooth. The green curry mousse brought a highly unique and fabulous Southeast Asian flair to the dish. The next course originally featured beef, but since I can't eat it, the chef kindly swapped it for fresh coral clams! It allowed me to enjoy a dish full of mouthwatering "wok hei". My friends, on the other hand, got to savor Padang ~ Surabaya Rendang.White Button Mushroom.Croissant! I heard this croissant was exceptionally flaky and delicious, with a wonderfully fragrant and rich filling inside. At this point, we enjoyed a refreshing lime sorbet as an interlude, prepping our taste buds perfectly to continue savoring the rest of the spectacular dishes. Penang ~ Assam Laksa.Soft Shell Crab! The soft shell crab was perfectly deep-fried and soaked in a tangy, spicy, and irresistible laksa broth—it was an absolute match made in heaven. The dish also included flavor-absorbing tofu puffs, fish tofu, and zucchini, making the layers of the dish even richer and more charming. Hualien ~ Wendan Pomelo Peel.Crispy Coconut Meat.Salted Egg Yolk! This dish featured my absolute favorite pomelo peel. The chef masterfully braised the peel with savory dried shrimp and fresh dace fish to create a melt-in-your-mouth artisanal dish with zero bitterness. Resting on a bed of well-cooked baby cabbage and paired with coconut meat in a salted egg broth, it was a masterful blend of savory and umami notes all in one pot. For the final savory course: Luzon ~ Shredded Chicken.Cream.Glass Noodles! The rich aroma of fresh soy sauce as it hit the table was simply too attractive. Shredded chicken, cabbage, green beans, and glass noodles absorbed every drop of the creamy broth's essence. It was smooth, incredibly tasty, and highly praiseworthy. Dessert time: Raub ~ Musang King Durian Crème Brûlée.Ipoh Fragrant Biscuit.White Coffee Crunch! Generously portioned and phenomenally tasty, this is an absolute must-try if you are a durian fan. The crème brûlée was bursting with an intense Musang King durian flavor. Its texture was as creamy and delicate as heavy cream, and the addition of milk chocolate and white coffee crunch elevated the taste even further, flawlessly achieving the ultimate pinnacle of durian desserts. “When you are alone but don’t feel lonely” Yep, hanging out by myself and going cafe hopping. One of my stops was this trendy aesthetic cafe loved by Surabaya locals, @volkscoffeeid, and it really gives off such a cozy vibe. This is definitely going on my list of cafes to visit frequently whenever I'm in Surabaya. For those who love hunting for Instagrammable spots to snap pictures, this is the place to be. Every spot is beautiful. FYI, the gluten-free cake by Shuartians is incredibly delicious. It totally suits my taste buds. The chicken bites are also super crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, which I totally didn't expect!! So good. I ordered the Aren Latte, and it absolutely hits the spot 🫶 I definitely want to try their other coffees next time. A quick note: since they just had their re-opening, Volks is still super packed. I arrived at 9 AM and managed to grab a seat inside. But not long after, the cafe got so crowded that there was even a waiting list. Our custom planner JOJO is truly amazing and very responsible. Because of an 8-hour delay caused by weather, our trip was almost ruined. Fortunately, JOJO helped coordinate everything so we could travel as planned. We could still reach him at 2 a.m., which was very touching! The guides arranged were all extremely reliable! Especially at the Banyuwangi ferry, due to traffic control, we waited in the sea for an hour. During that time, JOJO and the Surabaya guide Febryan stayed with us the whole time, comforting us when we got anxious. Febryan waited with us until 3 a.m., only sleeping for an hour before setting off at 5 a.m. to Ijen, where we saw the stunning Ijen volcano! Febryan worked really hard; because we were rushing the schedule, he barely rested but still responsibly guided us. He provided us with countless emotional support throughout the trip. He also took us to very cost-effective restaurants without any tourist traps. We are truly, truly grateful!
