Selcuk travel guide and discussion

I knew that Ephesus was an ancient city, but seeing it in real life was completely different. The first thing I remember is the heat. It was very hot, and there were quite a lot of people visiting. But almost everyone was looking for a little shade whenever they could. And somehow, this became part of the atmosphere of the place. Walking through Ephesus, I kept looking around and thinking about how much history was standing right in front of me. Ancient streets, huge columns, stone buildings and ruins stretching far into the distance. What impressed me most was the scale. It is one thing to see ancient ruins in photos, and completely another to walk between them yourself. You can actually follow the old streets and imagine how different this place must have looked when it was a living city. The Library of Celsus was especially impressive. Even in its ruined state, it is easy to understand why it is one of the most recognizable places in Ephesus. I also loved the feeling of walking through such an old city under the bright Turkish sun. Sometimes I stopped just to look at the details of the stones and imagine how many people had walked along these same streets centuries ago. Yes, it was hot. Yes, there were many visitors. But none of that took away from the experience. In a way, everyone looking for shade made the ancient city feel even more alive. Ephesus became one of those places that I remember not only because of what I saw, but because of what I felt there. It was a very special discovery for me, and definitely a place I would love to see again. ❤️ Have you ever visited an ancient city that impressed you more in real life than in photos? #localdiscoveries #Ephesus #TurkeyTravel #AncientCity #AncientHistory #Türkiye #TravelMoments #hotdiscussions

I can still feel the cold mountain air of Nemrut, its ancient stone eyes staring down at me, and I can't believe how relatively unknown this incredible place is. Mount Nemrut in southeast Türkiye is home to one of the most unique and breathtaking sights in the world – a high-altitude sanctuary with massive stone statues of gods and king Antiochus I. Yet, it gets a fraction of the tourists that flood Ephesus or Cappadocia. This is exactly why it's so underrated. It lacks the convenient, mass-tourism machine of other spots, requiring a dedicated journey, often including a long, winding drive. Most travelers are simply unaware of its scale and mystical aura, choosing more accessible routes. Their loss is your gain, as you can explore this historical masterpiece with incredible intimacy, often having large parts of the site almost completely to yourself, especially early in the day. This magnificent site was built in the 1st century BC by Antiochus I Theos of Commagene, a small kingdom that served as a buffer between the Roman Empire and the Parthians. His ambition was monumental. He created a combined shrine and royal tomb for himself, surrounded by gods from both Greek and Persian pantheons, signifying his own divine status and ancestry. The key feature, and the focus of the best photos, are the massive seated statues, original seated figures now headless. Their gigantic, distinctively styled stone heads, some weighing tons, now rest on the ground, scattered by the force of nature and time. These stone giants stand guard on two large terraces at the mountain summit, watching over his final resting place. The sheer engineering feat, moving such heavy stones to this remote peak, is mind-boggling, adding to its mysterious allure. It was only fully rediscovered in 1881, having remained hidden and silent for almost two thousand years. Getting here is part of the adventure, adding to its rewarding nature. My journey was unforgettable. I based myself in the relatively close city of Kahta, which is the most common starting point. I recommend flying into the nearest major airport, like Adıyaman (ADU), or taking a long-distance bus from larger Turkish cities. From Adıyaman, you can rent a car, which offers the most flexibility, or take a local minibus (dolmuş) to Kahta. In Kahta, numerous small agencies, and even some hotel owners, organize sunrise and sunset tours, which are, in my opinion, essential. Yes, the sunrise experience, with the heads bathed in first light, is dramatic, but I actually found the sunset to be equally stunning and often with far fewer people. These tours usually include the return trip from the hotel directly to the trailhead near the summit, saving you the tricky navigation on narrow mountain roads, especially in the dark. My final and most important travel advice is on how to maximize this experience without breaking the bank. Forget the high, tourist-inflated prices! Stay in a local guesthouse in Kahta instead of a fancy hotel; they offer incredible hospitality and better prices, plus they often arrange the tours. For budgeting, make sure to bring your own water and snacks, as prices on the mountain are astronomically high. Avoid buying tours at the last minute and instead, shop around a bit online or in Kahta to find the best deal. Regarding my secret tip, that hidden gem moment: while most tourists are hyper-focused on the main terraces at sunrise, take a few minutes right after to follow the lesser-beaten path just below the East Terrace. There, you’ll find smaller, less prominent relief carvings and ruins, a secret, quieter corner where you can feel a truly raw connection to the ancient past, entirely away from any crowds. This unassuming spot is where the true, underrated magic of Nemrut really shines for me. For entry fees, remember that your ticket is typically valid for the entire day, so take your time, relax, and soak in every moment. #MountNemrut #NemrutDag #HiddenGemTurkiye #UnderratedDestinationsns #ExploreTurkiye #underratedspots

A journey to Ephesus is like stepping into an open-air history book. The ancient city of Ephesus is located near Selçuk, in the Izmir Province of Turkey. We drove there from the resort town of Kuşadası, and the journey took only about 20 minutes by car — an easy and convenient trip for a day of exploring. The archaeological site is huge, beautifully maintained and very easy to navigate. There is so much to see as you walk through the ancient streets, past impressive columns, ruins and monumental buildings. What makes the experience even more fascinating is that archaeological excavations are still continuing here today, so the story of Ephesus is far from finished. For me, one of the most beautiful things about Ephesus was the scenery itself. The bright summer sky and warm, pale stone seemed like a perfect combination. Under the sunlight, the ancient ruins looked especially impressive, and every corner seemed made for photographs. Be prepared for quite a lot of walking, especially on a hot summer day, but it is absolutely worth taking your time and simply enjoying the atmosphere of this extraordinary place. And after your walk through ancient history, I recommend stopping at a restaurant on the central square of Selçuk and trying some local Turkish specialties. It is a wonderful way to finish the day — with archaeological discoveries followed by culinary ones. 🍽️ #localdiscoveries #ephesus #selcuk #izmir #turkeytravel #archaeology #ancientcity #Kusadasi #travelturkey #hotdiscussions

I pulled into Şirince expecting a quick, sleepy detour on the way to Ephesus. I ended up staying three days — and I still leave a little piece of myself there every time. That's the thing about truly underrated spots: they don't shout. They just wait, slow and warm, until you slow down enough to notice them. The first time I arrived, I got lost on the winding cobblestone lanes and stumbled into a tiny family-run vineyard before noon. The owner didn't hand me a polished tasting menu. He just poured me a glass of homemade fruit wine, sat me down on his porch, and pointed out how the morning light spilled over the olive groves below. No crowds, no loud tour groups, no one rushing me off to the next photo spot. That's Şirince in a nutshell — gentle, unpolished, and completely uninterested in performing for tourists. Here's the story I still laugh about. On one visit, I set out to hike the old trails above the village with a half-empty water bottle and zero map. I got turned around, wandered far longer than I planned, and ended up at a little stone house half-hidden in the trees. An elderly woman stepped out, gestured me inside without a word, and fed me fresh bread, homemade cheese, and a glass of cold water. We communicated entirely through smiles and hand gestures. I left feeling like I'd just been given a secret no travel guide would ever tell me. That's the magic of this place — it doesn't feel like tourism. It feels like being welcomed. This is why it's such an underrated spot. Most people rush past it on their way to Ephesus, seeing it as nothing more than a quick side stop. But Şirince has its own rhythm: whitewashed Greek-style houses draped in bougainvillea, tiny taverns serving slow-cooked lamb, and views over the valley that make every sunset feel like a gift. It's the kind of place where you can wander for hours and not see a single other tourist holding a selfie stick. A few tips I've picked up that make it even better: · Skip midday.Wander in the late afternoon when the sun softens and the streets empty out. · Try the fruit wines. The local homemade ones taste nothing like the mass-produced stuff you find in city shops. · Walk uphill. The best views and quietest lanes are the ones no bus tour will ever reach. · Stay overnight. The village after dark, with only crickets and distant conversation for sound, is the part no day-tripper ever gets to see. Şirince isn't flashy. It doesn't have big landmarks or viral photo spots. But that's exactly why it's one of my favorite underrated spots in the whole region. It doesn't try to impress you — it just lets you be there. So, fellow travelers: what's the tiny, overlooked hill town you stumbled into and never wanted to leave? And if you've been to Şirince — what's the one quiet moment that stuck with you long after you left? Drop it below, I'm already planning my next visit and I'm ready to steal your best hidden spots. #underratedspots

It's not that the city isn't worth visiting, but the gap between the real experience and the photos online is huge🌊 With the Aegean Sea, ancient Roman ruins, and Greek-style towns, it sounds perfect, but the actual trip had quite a few frustrating details. I just finished my full itinerary, so setting aside the filters, I'm sharing some real "pitfall" experiences for the average traveler. If you're planning to come, sisters, please take this as a rational reference✅ 💡Honest talk | Let's start with the pros ▪️The atmosphere along the Aegean coastline is top-notch. At sunset, the shimmering sea is visually healing. ▪️The historical depth is profound. The ancient city of Ephesus preserves the glorious ruins of ancient Rome intact; history buffs will absolutely love it. ▪️The surrounding towns are excellent: the colorful stone houses of Alaçatı and the seaside castle of Çeşme make it easy to snap blockbuster photos with a Mediterranean vibe. ▪️The cost of living is friendlier compared to other tourist cities in Turkey. Seafood and local snacks are reasonably priced. ▪️Most locals are warm and friendly. There aren't many East Asian faces, so the travel experience is relatively quiet. ⚠️The reality that makes me not want to visit again ▪️The gap between the city and online photos is obvious. The old town streets are messy, the markets are crowded and noisy, and some neighborhoods are just average—lacking that refined, artistic feel, making it hard to get clean shots. The city itself has limited things to explore; the highlights are mostly scattered in the surrounding towns, and the city center is just a transit hub. ▪️The weather is physically grueling. In summer, the days are scorching and dry, the wind by the sea is extremely strong, and the temperature difference between day and night is huge. You'll sweat in short sleeves during the day, but the evening sea breeze is bone-chilling. It's hard to dress for, and it's easy to catch a cold. ▪️Transportation is a hassle. The distance between attractions is far. Ephesus, Alaçatı, and Çeşme are all over 1 hour apart by car. Public minibuses have limited schedules, and waiting for them wastes time. Taxis often overcharge, and their driving style is quite wild. If you're traveling independently without a rental car, you'll spend a lot of energy on the road. ▪️Safety details cannot be ignored. Pickpocketing is common in markets, seaside promenades, and stations. Keep your backpack in front and keep your phone with you at all times. I don't recommend walking alone in remote alleys at night. You can't fully relax the whole time; you have to stay alert. ▪️Facilities are inconvenient. Public restrooms are scarce, and most require payment. Network signals in the old town are intermittent, and navigation often fails. There are many uphill stone roads, which are very painful to walk on with a suitcase; it's not suitable for wandering around with large luggage. 🚗Transportation tips ▪️Arrival: Adnan Menderes Airport. Prioritize taking the airport bus into the city; it's much more cost-effective than taking a taxi. ▪️In the city: Get an Izmir Kart for subways and light rail. Don't just hail taxis on the side of the road; they are prone to overcharging. ▪️Going to the surrounding areas: 1. Renting a car offers the most freedom and is the top choice for groups. Remember to check the car's condition carefully when picking it up. 2. Public minibuses: For trips to Çeşme and Alaçatı, pay attention to the last bus time so you don't miss your ride back. 3. One-day small group tours: Suitable for those who don't want to deal with transportation hassles and want to check off Ephesus + surrounding ancient towns in one go. 🗺️3-day, 2-night tested itinerary, avoiding ineffective rushing Day 1 | Slow stroll in Izmir city ▪️Afternoon: Konak Square and Clock Tower, the city landmark. Avoid the midday sun; the atmosphere is better in the evening. ▪️Kemeraltı Bazaar: Immerse yourself in the local street life. Shop rationally and keep an eye on your belongings. ▪️Historical Elevator (Asansör): Go to the top for a panoramic view of the city and the Aegean Sea. Sunset is the best time. ▪️Evening: Walk along the seaside promenade, try a fish sandwich by the sea, and stay at a hotel in the city. Day 2 | Heading to the millennium-old ruins: Ephesus Ancient City🏛️ ⚠️Must go early! Get there before the tour groups arrive; 7:30 AM is the best time to enter. Focus on the Library of Celsus and the massive ancient Roman theater to feel the shock of the millennium-old Roman civilization. The stone roads are exposed to the sun with no shade, so hats, sunscreen, and plenty of drinking water are essential. On the way back, you can stop by the House of the Virgin Mary. Return to the city for the night. Day 3 | Mediterranean town day trip | Alaçatı + Çeşme ▪️Morning: Explore Alaçatı, with its colorful stone houses and vintage windmills. Avoid the strong midday light and wander through the alleys for photos. ▪️Afternoon: Head to Çeşme Castle, climb the walls to overlook the Aegean Sea. If the weather is good, you can see the Greek islands in the distance. ▪️Eat fresh seafood by the sea, keep track of the last bus time to return to the city, and end the trip. 🍜Must-try local food✨ ▪️Balık Ekmek (fish sandwich): A seaside specialty, freshly grilled fish in bread, great value. ▪️Kumru cheese sandwich: Local specialty bread with cheese and vegetable filling, available everywhere on the street. ▪️Grilled octopus and various sea fish: Aegean seafood; I recommend reliable old restaurants by the sea. ▪️Boyoz pastry: Traditional breakfast, paired with Turkish tea, a daily staple for locals. ▪️Pomegranate juice and figs: Local fresh fruits, sweet and refreshing. ⚠️Avoid pitfalls: Restaurant prices around tourist attractions are inflated. Confirm menu prices before ordering. There is a tipping culture in restaurants; generally, 10%–15% of the bill is sufficient. 🎒Essential packing list ▪️Super strong sunscreen! The summer UV rays are harsh; hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are all must-haves. ▪️Be sure to bring a light jacket. The evening sea breeze is bone-chilling, even on midsummer nights. ▪️Comfortable, non-slip shoes. The ancient cities and towns are full of uneven stone roads; sandals are very painful. ▪️Carry small change with you; you'll need it for restrooms and buses. ▪️Download offline maps and translation software; the network in the old town is unstable. ⚠️Hard-learned lessons 1. Don't pin your expectations on Izmir city; the real beauty is in the surrounding areas. The city is more of a transit point. 2. There is no shade in the ancient city of Ephesus. Do not go at noon; it's scorching and full of tour groups, which will ruin the experience. 3. Prioritize using apps for taxis; don't hail them directly on the road, as you're likely to encounter inflated prices. 4. Don't buy souvenirs impulsively in the market. Compare prices, keep valuables close to you, and watch out for pickpockets. 5. Remember the last bus time for minibuses. Transportation in the towns at night is very inconvenient; don't get stranded. 6. I don't recommend changing hotels every day. Stay in Izmir city and travel back and forth to the surrounding towns to reduce the pain of moving luggage. ✅Final honest words It's not that Izmir isn't good; it's just not for a "lie-flat" vacation🌊 If you are obsessed with ancient Roman history and love deep exploration of towns, this place will give you huge surprises. But if you want to relax and just look at the sea, you have to accept the reality of transportation hassles, uneven environments, and the need to stay alert at all times. Set your expectations, choose the right way to travel, and you can truly feel the charm of this Aegean land.

The Library of Celsus was one of the main reasons I wanted to see Ephesus, because its photographs make the restored facade look almost perfectly symmetrical. Standing in front of it gave me a completely different impression. I could see the details of the stonework and sculptures much more clearly, while the surrounding ruins helped put the structure into context. My camera captured the famous facade beautifully, but the real experience included looking at the worn surfaces and imagining the scale of the ancient city around it. The picture was impressive, but being there made the history feel much closer. #photovsrealitytravel #photovsrealitytravel

didn't expect a hillside to stop me mid-step. But that's exactly what Pamukkale does — a cascade of blinding white travertine terraces spilling down the hill like frozen snow, holding pools of mineral water that have drawn travelers here since antiquity. And in 2026, with Türkiye climbing global travel trend rankings, this is one destination the world is finally catching up to. 🤍 The Cotton Castle Itself Pamukkale means "cotton castle" in Turkish, and the name makes sense the second you see it. Thermal spring water, rich in calcium carbonate, has been cascading down this hillside for thousands of years, layering the slopes in gleaming white mineral terraces. Walking barefoot through the shallow pools (shoes off is mandatory to protect the terraces) with warm water at your ankles and the whole valley opening below you — it's one of those rare places that photos genuinely undersell. 🏛️ Hierapolis: A City Built for the Waters Right above the terraces sits Hierapolis, an ancient Roman spa city founded around the thermal springs. Wander the necropolis — one of the largest ancient cemeteries in Anatolia — then the well-preserved Roman theatre, still framing views over the valley. Locals and visitors have been soaking in these same waters for over two thousand years. 📜 Ephesus: The Day-Trip Extension An hour and a half away, Ephesus rounds out the trip. The Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre make it one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean. Pairing the two — mineral terraces one day, marble ruins the next — makes for a complete slice of Türkiye's ancient world. 🕰️ Best Time to Visit Early morning or just before sunset are the moves here — the terraces get crowded fast once tour buses arrive midday. Spring and autumn bring the most comfortable weather for walking the site. 🏨 Where to Stay Pamukkale village has thermal hotels with their own mineral pools, ideal for soaking after a day of walking. For more options, nearby Denizli offers a wider range of stays with easy access to the site. ✈️ Getting There Fly into Denizli Çardak Airport from Istanbul, or take a domestic flight to Izmir and continue by road, combining Ephesus into the same trip. Book your stay near Pamukkale or Ephesus through Trip.com for the easiest way to plan this route — hotel deals, flights, and everything in one place.

If you’re staying in İzmir and only have half a day to spare, a trip to Ephesus Ancient City is absolutely worth it. Located near the town of Selçuk, about an hour’s drive from İzmir, Ephesus is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world and one of the highlights of any trip to Türkiye. We entered through the Lower Gate, which is the route I would personally recommend if your main goal is to see the famous theatre and library. There is a parking area directly outside the entrance, making it very convenient for visitors arriving by car. As of 2026, the entrance fee for international visitors is approximately 40 Euros per person, which includes access to the ancient city and the Ephesus Experience Museum. Parking costs around 150 Turkish Lira per vehicle, although prices can occasionally change depending on the season. The first major landmark you’ll come across is the impressive Great Theatre of Ephesus. Built into the hillside, this enormous theatre could hold around 25,000 spectators and was once used for performances, public meetings, and important political gatherings. Standing there, it’s hard to imagine that this place was already bustling with life nearly two thousand years ago. From the theatre, simply continue along the ancient marble streets that once connected the city’s most important buildings. Walking through Ephesus feels less like visiting ruins and more like wandering through an ancient city that has somehow been frozen in time. Along the way you’ll pass the remains of shops, columns, public buildings, and the former commercial center of the city. Eventually you’ll arrive at the true star of Ephesus — the magnificent Library of Celsus. The intricate carvings, towering columns, and beautifully reconstructed facade make it one of the most recognizable ancient buildings in the world. Built in the 2nd century AD, the library once housed around 12,000 scrolls and was considered one of the largest libraries in the Roman Empire. What surprised me most was just how detailed the architecture still is after all these centuries. Every column, statue, and decorative element seems to tell a story from another era. If you have extra time, you can continue walking further uphill towards Curetes Street and the Temple of Hadrian, but if you’re mainly visiting for the theatre and library, this route is perfect for a relaxed 2–3 hour visit. And just like everywhere else in Türkiye, there is one more thing you’ll find waiting for you here, Cute Cats 🐈 #turkiye #ephesus #izmir #libraryofcelsus

When it comes to Kusadasi, you can't miss its rich history and romantic Mediterranean charm. Coupled with its bustling traditional bazaars, it’s a paradise for both history buffs and shopaholics! Toss in Ephesus—one of the world’s best-preserved Roman ruins—and you’ve got a destination where ancient and modern cultures collide. There's so much to see that one day is barely enough to take it all in. Suggested Itinerary: Start your morning in downtown Kusadasi with a leisurely cup of Turkish coffee to kick off your journey. From there, it’s a quick 30-minute drive to the ancient city of Ephesus. I recommend dedicating the entire morning to exploring the ruins and soaking in the atmosphere of ancient civilization. For lunch, head back to Kusadasi city center and find a seaside restaurant near the harbor to try some fresh Turkish grilled fish or kebabs. In the afternoon, wander through the local bazaar to pick up souvenirs, carpets, or spices and get a taste of local street life. Must-Visit Spots: Ephesus This Roman city is more spectacular than you could ever imagine. Right from the main entrance, you're greeted by the grand Roman theater and the iconic Library of Celsus. The intricate carvings and architectural details are still remarkably intact—perfect for photos! Don't forget the ruins of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Kusadasi Harbor The harbor is breathtaking at sunset, especially with the flocks of seagulls—it has a charming European small-town vibe. You can even grab some famous Turkish ice cream along the promenade. It’s a total Instagram hotspot! Kusadasi Bazaar A visit to this traditional market is a must. It’s a riot of color, filled with unique textiles, spices, and handicrafts. It’s the perfect place to shop for souvenirs with friends. Pro tip: you might get an unexpected surprise if you try your hand at bargaining with the local vendors! Travel Tips & Advice: 1. Ephesus is very exposed to the sun. In the summer, be sure to bring a sun hat, sunglasses, and plenty of water. Also, wear sturdy walking shoes, as the stone paths can be quite uneven. 2. The ancient city is open year-round from 8:00 AM to 6:45 PM. From Wednesday to Saturday, there are special night hours (7:00 PM - 11:00 PM). If you want to avoid the heat, a night visit offers a more mysterious atmosphere. 3. The entrance fee is currently 493 Lira. It's a good idea to have cash ready, as not all gates accept credit cards. 4. Getting around downtown Kusadasi is easy. There are plenty of shops near the pier where you can pick up local snacks or cold drinks. 5. Stay alert for pickpockets in the bazaar. Keep your bag secure and split up your cash. 6. Set aside at least half a day for Ephesus. Don’t rush—every corner is steeped in history and makes for an incredible photo! Final Thoughts: Combining Kusadasi and Ephesus makes for a perfect day of exploring the past and present. Whether you’re into historical landmarks, shopping, or great food, this trip is ideal for solo travelers and families alike. You’ll definitely find yourself wanting to come back!

#bucketlistdestinations We visited Ephesus independently from İzmir, and it turned out to be a very manageable day trip without an organised tour. Getting there was straightforward; getting back required a little more improvisation, and our first unexpected adventure happened before we’d even made it through the entrance. 🚆 HOW TO GET THERE FROM İZMİR We took a regional TCDD train from İzmir Basmane Station to Selçuk, the closest town to Ephesus. The journey takes roughly 1.5 hours, which makes Selçuk an easy base for reaching the archaeological site. Once in Selçuk, don’t look for a numbered Ephesus bus. Instead, find the local dolmuş marked: SELÇUK – EFES – PAMUCAK It takes you to the Lower Gate of Ephesus in around 10 minutes. Current fares are roughly 100 TL, although transport prices in Türkiye change frequently. 📌 One useful detail: older travel guides can be confusing because Selçuk’s bus arrangements have changed. The local minibuses for Ephesus can be picked up in the town-centre minibus area, around the large roundabout near Yamanlar Eczane. 🚕 PLAN HOW YOU’LL GET BACK This was the less obvious part of travelling independently. When we finished visiting Ephesus, getting back to Selçuk by public transport wasn’t straightforward, so we used one of the local taxis waiting near the archaeological site. From Selçuk, we caught a bus back to İzmir. For the short taxi ride between Ephesus and Selçuk, I would currently budget approximately €8–15 and confirm the fare with the driver before getting in, as the price can vary depending on where you finish your visit. After several hours walking around Ephesus under the Turkish sun is not the ideal moment to suddenly wonder how you’re getting home. We tested that approach for you. 😄 💵 BRING SOME TURKISH LIRA Our second lesson arrived at the ticket office. We planned to pay by card, but the terminal wasn’t working. We had money, we had cards and Ephesus was right in front of us — we just couldn’t buy the tickets. Eventually, we went to the little shops near the entrance and exchanged money there so we could pay in Turkish lira. Card payment is normally possible, so I’m not saying Ephesus is cash-only. But after our experience, I wouldn’t rely entirely on a card. Having some lira with you can save a lot of unnecessary hassle and is useful for local transport and small expenses too. 👟 THE ANCIENT MARBLE IS BEAUTIFUL — AND SLIPPERY Ephesus is an entire archaeological city rather than one monument surrounded by a few ruins, so expect plenty of walking. Some of the ancient marble is polished, uneven and surprisingly slippery. Comfortable shoes with decent grip make a real difference, particularly after rain. This is probably not the best place to discover how committed you really are to fashionable footwear. 😄 ☀️ AVOID THE HOTTEST PART OF THE DAY Large sections of Ephesus have very little shade. In warmer months, water, sunscreen and a hat are essential, and an earlier start makes the visit much more comfortable. I would allow at least 2–3 hours for the main archaeological site rather than treating Ephesus as a quick photo stop. 🏛️ DON’T MAKE THE LIBRARY OF CELSUS YOUR ONLY GOAL Of course, the Library of Celsus is spectacular. And yes, we took the obligatory photo there too. But Ephesus became much more interesting when we stopped thinking about reaching the famous façade and started paying attention to everything along the way: marble streets, columns, reliefs, statues and remains of buildings that make it possible to imagine this as a functioning ancient city. If you have enough time, consider visiting the Terrace Houses as well. They require a separate ticket, but the preserved mosaics, frescoes and rooms show something the monumental ruins can’t: how some of Ephesus’s wealthy residents actually lived. 📌 QUICK EPHESUS CHECKLIST 🚆 From İzmir: Basmane Station → TCDD train → Selçuk 🚌 To Ephesus: “Selçuk – Efes – Pamucak” dolmuş → Lower Gate 🚕 Return: taxi to Selçuk → bus/train to İzmir 💰 Taxi: budget roughly €8–15 and agree on the fare first 💵 Cash: carry some Turkish lira in case the card terminal isn’t working 👟 Shoes: comfortable, with good grip ☀️ Bring: water + sunscreen + hat ⏰ Time: allow at least 2–3 hours 🏛️ Extra: consider adding the Terrace Houses If we did this trip again, we’d still choose to visit independently. Being able to walk through Ephesus at our own pace, stop wherever something caught our attention and spend as long as we wanted exploring was worth the small logistical adventures along the way. Ephesus absolutely deserves its place on a Türkiye bucket list — although apparently even 2,000 years of history can’t stop us from coming home with several photographs of a cat. 🐈😄

Turkey has Istanbul and Ephesus. But in the heart of Anatolia lies a landscape so surreal it feels like another planet. Göreme is a small village surrounded by fairy chimneys — towering rock formations shaped by wind and volcanic ash. For centuries, people carved homes, churches, and entire underground cities into this soft stone. Here is how to sleep in a cave and watch the sky fill with balloons, all while saving money with Trip.com. 1. The Sunrise Balloons: A Sky Full of Fire Every morning, weather permitting, over a hundred hot air balloons rise over Göreme. It is one of the most spectacular sights on Earth. The balloons drift through the valleys, their burners glowing like fireflies against the dawn sky. The best view is from the rooftop of your cave hotel. Wake up at 5 AM. Bring a blanket. Watch the show unfold in silence. Pro Tip: Download the Trip.com guide for Cappadocia balloon watching. It tells you which rooftops are open to the public and which valleys offer the best ground-level views. You do not need to pay for a balloon ride to be amazed. Watching from below is equally magical and costs nothing. 2. Göreme Open-Air Museum: Churches Hidden in Stone This UNESCO site is a monastic complex carved into the rock. The cave churches date back to the 10th century, their walls covered in vivid frescoes. The Dark Church is the most famous, its colors preserved by centuries of darkness. The Buckle Church has a long narrative frieze depicting the life of Christ. It is art history carved into stone. Money Hack: Buy your ticket on Trip.com before you go. The museum is the most popular site in Cappadocia, and lines are long by mid-morning. Booking online lets you skip the queue. Go at opening time, 8 AM. You will have the churches almost to yourself. 3. The Underground Cities: Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı Beneath the surface of Cappadocia lie entire cities. Derinkuyu descends eight levels into the earth, with stables, kitchens, churches, and ventilation shafts. It could shelter thousands of people for months. Walking through these narrow tunnels is claustrophobic and thrilling. You will wonder how anyone lived like this. You will also understand why they had to. Budget Advice: Skip the expensive private tours. Take a local bus from Göreme to Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı. The entrance fees are small, and the buses are cheap. Book a combined "Underground City + Ihlara Valley" tour on Trip.com if you want a guide. The guide explains the history and survival strategies of the early Christians who hid here. 4. Food That Comes From the Earth Cappadocian food is rustic and flavorful. Try Testi Kebab — meat and vegetables cooked in a sealed clay pot, cracked open at your table with a theatrical flourish. Order Mantı — tiny Turkish dumplings topped with yogurt, garlic, and spiced butter. And do not miss Gözleme — thin flatbread stuffed with spinach, cheese, or potatoes, cooked on a griddle by village women. Where to Eat: Skip the restaurants on the main street. Find Topdeck Cave or Dibek, family-run places where locals eat. The cave interiors are cozy, and the prices are fair. Check Trip.com for set menu deals — some restaurants include a pot of Turkish tea and baklava when you book through the app. Where to Stay? This is the one place where you must sleep in a cave. Book on Trip.com a cave hotel in Göreme. Look for Sultan Cave Suites or a more budget-friendly option nearby. The rooms are carved into the rock, with stone walls, arched ceilings, and terraces overlooking the valleys. Waking up to the sight of balloons drifting past your window is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Conclusion: Göreme is not just a place. It is a feeling. It is watching the sunrise from a cave rooftop. It is walking through tunnels dug by hands that lived a thousand years ago. It is eating food cooked in clay pots and drinking tea with strangers who become friends. Cappadocia is tourism at its most surreal, but Göreme remains grounded. It is a village of humans living inside the earth, looking up at the sky, and dreaming of flight. Come and dream with them. #trip_com #Turkey #Goreme #goremetravel #Cappadocia #TurkeyHiddenGems #FairyChimneys #HotAirBalloons #BudgetTravel #EuropeAsiaGuide #travelturkey #unesco #CaveHotels #CappadociaBalloons

If you are looking for a destination where every trip can feel completely different, put Türkiye on your list. What makes Türkiye special is not just its famous landmarks. It is the incredible variety you can experience within the same country — ancient cities, turquoise coastlines, dramatic landscapes, colorful bazaars, mountain villages, vibrant cities, local food and centuries of history. 🏛️ Start with history Türkiye is home to some of the world’s most fascinating ancient sites. Walk through the ruins of Ephesus, explore the ancient city of Hierapolis, discover the extraordinary landscapes of Cappadocia, or wander through the historic streets of Istanbul. You don’t have to be a history lover to enjoy these places. Seeing ancient architecture surrounded by modern life makes the experience feel completely different from visiting a museum. 🌊 Then head to the Mediterranean and Aegean If your idea of a perfect holiday involves swimming in clear blue water, Türkiye has plenty to offer. From Antalya and Kaş to Fethiye, Bodrum and Marmaris, the coastline is filled with beautiful beaches, hidden bays, boat trips and seaside towns. And the best part? You can combine a relaxing beach holiday with historical sites, local villages and incredible food. 🎈 Experience Cappadocia Cappadocia feels almost unreal. The fairy chimneys, valleys and cave formations create a landscape unlike anywhere else. Watching hundreds of hot-air balloons rise over the valleys at sunrise is one of those travel experiences that stays in your memory long after you leave. 🕌 Don’t miss Istanbul Istanbul deserves a trip of its own. It is where Europe and Asia meet, but the city’s identity goes far beyond its geography. Historic mosques, grand palaces, bustling bazaars, hidden streets, cafés, ferry rides and Bosphorus views all come together to create a city that is impossible to describe with just one attraction. 🍴 And then there is the food… Türkiye is a dream destination for anyone who loves food. Try Turkish breakfast, simit, gözleme, pide, kebabs, meze, baklava, Turkish delight and countless regional dishes. And don’t underestimate the small local restaurants. Some of the best meals can be found in places that don’t look particularly touristy. 🗺️ A simple Türkiye travel idea If you have around 10–14 days, you can create an incredible route: Istanbul → Cappadocia → Antalya → Kaş/Fethiye → Ephesus → Izmir This gives you a little bit of everything: 🏛️ History 🎈 Unique landscapes 🌊 Beaches 🍴 Turkish cuisine 🕌 Culture 🏙️ City life 🌅 Incredible sunsets But Türkiye is not a country you need to rush through. My favorite advice for anyone visiting is simple: Don’t only visit the places that appear on every “Top 10” list. Take a local bus. Walk through a neighborhood. Visit a small market. Stop for tea. Try something you’ve never eaten before. Talk to locals. Take a ferry. Get a little lost. Because Türkiye isn’t just about the places you photograph. It’s about the moments you didn’t plan. 🇹🇷❤️ #Turkey #Türkiye #VisitTurkey #TurkeyTravel #TravelTurkey #ExploreTurkey #TurkiyeTravel #TravelInspiration #Wanderlust #TravelGram #TravelPhotography #DiscoverTurkey #TravelBlogger #Tripcom #Thingstodo 📌 Save this for your Türkiye trip!

Turkey looks easy to add to a travel wishlist. Istanbul. Cappadocia. Pamukkale. Ephesus. Antalya. Bodrum. Fethiye. Hot air balloons. Ancient ruins. Blue-water coast. Turkish breakfast. Bazaars and Bosphorus views. Everything sounds worth visiting. But for a first Turkey trip, the biggest mistake is trying to fit too much into one itinerary. Turkey is not one small destination. Each region can feel like a different trip. This cheat sheet is for first-timers who want better pacing, smarter route choices and fewer rushed transfers. Save this before building your Turkey itinerary. · ——————————— 🇹🇷 First Rule: Choose Your Trip Style First Do not start by listing every famous place. Start by choosing the kind of Turkey trip you want. Turkey can be: 🕌 City + culture Istanbul, mosques, palaces, bazaars, food and Bosphorus views 🎈 Scenery + bucket list Cappadocia, cave hotels, balloons and rock valleys 🏛️ History + classic sights Ephesus, Pamukkale, ancient ruins and white terraces 🌊 Coast + slow holiday Antalya, Bodrum, Fethiye, beach time and boat trips 🧭 Big sampler route Istanbul + Cappadocia + one extra region Simple rule: For a first trip, choose two main styles. Not five. · ——————————— 🌤️ Best Time to Visit Turkey 🌸 Spring Best for: Istanbul Cappadocia Western Turkey Multi-city sightseeing Comfortable walking weather Good if you want culture, scenery and balanced pacing. ☀️ Summer Best for: Antalya Bodrum Fethiye Beach resorts Boat days Coastal holidays Be careful: Inland sightseeing can feel hot, and popular coastal areas can be busy. 🍂 Autumn Best for: Istanbul Cappadocia Western Turkey Coast extensions Multi-region routes One of the best all-round seasons for first-timers. ❄️ Winter Best for: Istanbul culture trips Lower-crowd sightseeing in some areas Cappadocia winter scenery Slower city-focused travel Be careful: Weather can affect outdoor plans. Simple rule: Spring and autumn are usually easiest for first-timers. Summer is better if your trip is coast-focused. · ——————————— 📅 How Many Days Do You Need? 🗓️ 5–7 Days Best for: Istanbul only or Istanbul + Cappadocia Good if you want a simple first taste without too many hotel changes. Avoid adding the coast, Pamukkale and Ephesus into this length. · ——————— 🗓️ 7–9 Days Best for: A classic first Turkey route. Good options: Istanbul + Cappadocia Istanbul + Cappadocia + Pamukkale Istanbul + Cappadocia + Ephesus Istanbul + one coastal base This is a good balance if you want variety without making the trip too complicated. · ——————— 🗓️ 10–14 Days Best for: A fuller Turkey route. Good options: Istanbul + Cappadocia + coast Istanbul + Cappadocia + Ephesus / Pamukkale Istanbul + western Turkey + coast Istanbul + Cappadocia + Antalya Good if you want culture, scenery and rest in the same trip. Simple rule: Turkey becomes better when you stop trying to compress it. Fewer regions usually make a better trip. · ——————————— 🕌 Istanbul Basics Istanbul is usually the best first stop for a Turkey trip. Best for: First-timers Food lovers History lovers City explorers Couples Families Why it works: You can fill several days without leaving the city. You can experience: Historic mosques Palaces Bazaars Bosphorus views Ferry rides Neighbourhood walks Rooftop meals Street food Museums Old city atmosphere Modern city energy Good stay areas: 📍 Sultanahmet Best for historic sights 📍 Karaköy / Galata Balanced, stylish and central 📍 Taksim / Beyoğlu Lively and convenient 📍 Kadıköy More local Asian-side feel Tip: Group sights by area so you do not keep crossing the city. Simple rule: Start with Istanbul if you want the most complete first taste of Turkey. · ——————————— 🎈 Cappadocia Basics Cappadocia is one of Turkey’s most iconic travel images. Best for: Couples Photographers Landscape lovers Cave hotel stays Hot air balloon dreams Slow scenic mornings Why go: Hot air balloons Cave hotels Rock valleys Sunrise viewpoints Open-air museums Underground cities Scenic walks Sunset viewpoints Good bases: 📍 Göreme Easiest first-timer base 📍 Uçhisar Quieter and scenic 📍 Ürgüp Slower stay feel Recommended stay: 2 nights minimum. 3 nights is better if balloons are important to you. Important reminder: Hot air balloons depend on weather. Do not build the whole trip around one guaranteed balloon morning. Simple rule: Choose Cappadocia if you want the most magical and visually different part of Turkey. · ——————————— 🏛️ What to Add After Istanbul + Cappadocia After the two classic stops, choose your extra region carefully. Do not add places only because they are famous. Add them because they fit your route. 🏛️ Ephesus / Selçuk Best for ancient ruins, classical history and a strong western Turkey add-on. Good if you enjoy historical sites. ⚪ Pamukkale Best for white terraces, thermal landscapes and a history + nature pairing. Good if you want a scenic stop that feels different. 🌊 Antalya Best for coast, old town, resort access and Mediterranean holiday mood. Good if you want to slow down after sightseeing. ⛵ Fethiye / Ölüdeniz Best for sea views, boat trips, scenic coast and relaxed beach rhythm. Good if you want a nature-and-coast focused trip. 🌅 Bodrum Best for stylish beach stays, summer holidays, marina mood and Aegean resort feel. Good if you want a polished summer escape. Simple rule: For a first Turkey trip, one extra region after Istanbul + Cappadocia is usually enough. · ——————————— ✈️ Suggested Route Ideas 🧭 Route 1: Istanbul + Cappadocia Best for: First-timers Couples Shorter trips Photography Culture + scenery Good for: 5–9 days, depending on pace. Why it works: You get two very different sides of Turkey without overcomplicating the route. · ——————— 🏛️ Route 2: Istanbul + Cappadocia + Pamukkale or Ephesus Best for: History lovers Culture travellers Classic Turkey sightseeing Travellers who want more than city + balloons Good for: 7–10 days. Tip: Avoid too many one-night stops. · ——————— 🌊 Route 3: Istanbul + Cappadocia + Coast Best for: Longer first trips Couples Families Travellers who want city + scenery + rest Good for: 10–14 days or more. Tip: This is not a short-trip route. Give each region space. · ——————— ☀️ Route 4: Istanbul + Coast Best for: Families Summer trips Resort lovers A simpler city + beach plan Good for: 7–10 days. Tip: Choose one coastal base instead of jumping through too many beach towns. · ——————————— 🚗 How to Move Around Turkey Turkey is big. Do not assume every famous place is close. ✈️ Domestic flights Best for long-distance jumps such as Istanbul, Cappadocia, Antalya and Izmir routes. Good if you have limited leave and want to save time. 🚌 Buses Useful for regional links and budget-friendly city-to-city movement. Good when timing works well. 🚗 Car or private transfer Useful for coastal routes, scenic stops, family travel and harder-to-connect areas. Good if you want flexibility and convenience. 🚆 Trains Useful on selected routes, but not always the easiest first-choice strategy. Simple rule: Fly for big jumps. Slow down once you are inside a region. · ——————————— 🏨 Where to Stay Logic Hotel location matters in Turkey. 🏙️ Istanbul Choose your base by daily plan. Sultanahmet for historic sightseeing Karaköy / Galata for balanced access Taksim / Beyoğlu for lively convenience Kadıköy for a more local feel 🎈 Cappadocia Choose a base by travel style. Göreme for first-timer convenience Uçhisar for quieter scenery Ürgüp for slower stays 🌊 Coast Choose one main base. Antalya for old town and resort access Fethiye for scenery and excursions Bodrum for beach and resort-style trips 👨👩👧 Families Prioritise: Comfort Location Transport ease Fewer hotel changes Less luggage movement Simple rule: Choose hotels by route convenience, not only by photo appeal. · ——————————— 🍽️ What to Eat in Turkey Turkey is a great food destination, so leave space for meals. Look out for: Kebabs Meze Pide Lahmacun Menemen Simit Baklava Turkish breakfast Turkish tea Turkish coffee Seafood on the coast Good food rhythm: Slow breakfast Tea breaks Street food stops Market browsing Rooftop or waterfront meals Simple local restaurants Simple rule: Food varies by region, so mix famous classics with local specialties. · ——————————— ✅ What to Book Early Some parts of a Turkey trip shape the whole experience. Book earlier if they matter to you: Cappadocia balloon ride Cave hotel in Cappadocia Popular Istanbul stays in peak periods Domestic flights on key routes Bosphorus cruise for specific timing or style Popular summer coast hotels Key guided experiences Simple rule: Book the experience-defining parts early. Keep smaller daily plans flexible. · ——————————— ❌ Common First-Timer Mistakes Trying to cover too many regions Underestimating transfer time Staying only one night in Cappadocia Assuming balloons always fly Changing hotels too often Not planning around summer heat Treating coast, inland and city pacing the same Expecting trains to solve every route Leaving key bookings too late Booking hotels only for photo views Ignoring hotel location in Istanbul Trying to do everything in one trip Better choices: Choose one main route style Stay longer in fewer bases Use flights for far regions Leave buffer for Cappadocia Keep coast days slower Group Istanbul sights by area Add only one extra region if time is limited Protect rest days · ——————————— 🧭 Quick Decision Guide Choose Istanbul if: You want food, culture, history and city energy. Choose Cappadocia if: You want balloons, cave hotels and dramatic landscapes. Choose Pamukkale or Ephesus if: You enjoy ancient history and classic scenic sites. Choose the coast if: You want beach time, resort stays and slower days. Choose a longer Turkey route if: You have 10 days or more and want city, scenery and coast together. · ——————————— ✨ Final Thought Turkey is not a place you need to rush through. It is better when each part of the trip has a purpose. Istanbul for culture and food. Cappadocia for landscapes and dreamlike mornings. Pamukkale and Ephesus for classic history and scenery. The coast for slower days and blue-water rest. The best Turkey trip is not the one with the most stops. It is the one where each stop feels different, useful and worth the effort. Choose your travel style first. Build the route around it. Leave buffer. Move slower than your first draft. That is how Turkey becomes memorable instead of exhausting. #turkeytravel #turkeytrip #istanbultravel #cappadocia #antalya #bodrum #fethiye #pamukkale #ephesus #travelguide #traveltips #travelcheatsheet #europetravel #tripplanning #tripmoments

“roasting” mode 🥩🔥 The moment the plane landed in Istanbul, a heat wave hit like opening an oven door. The water in Pamukkale is warm, like soaking your feet; the stones in Cappadocia get so hot you could fry an egg on them, and you have to get up at 3 AM for the hot air balloon—not for romance, but because if you wait any later, the sun will roast you alive. Even crazier, you have to take off your shoes in mosques, and the floor is so hot you’ll be hopping around. 🚨 summer survival guide 👗 what to wear Don’t trust those boho maxi dress photos online! Sunscreen shirt + wide-leg pants + sporty sandals is the real deal. Headscarf and long sleeves are a must for mosques, but the fabric has to be light and breathable, or you’ll come out looking like you just got pulled out of water. ⏰ time management Human activity hours are 5–9 AM and after 6 PM. From noon to 4 PM, just stay in the hotel with air conditioning or find a shaded outdoor café to drink tea. Pamukkale must be visited early; after 8 AM it’s packed and the water heats up, ruining the experience. 🚗 transportation tips Don’t take open-top sightseeing buses at midday! Don’t hike Ephesus under the blazing sun! Both will give you heatstroke in no time. We recommend renting a car with full AC. Spending extra for your life is worth it. 💰 save money + avoid pitfalls Water at scenic spots costs 3 times more. Stock up on big bottles at the supermarket in advance. Hot air balloons are expensive but worth it—just make sure to book the first flight. By the second flight, the sun is already too harsh to open your eyes. 🌟 summer-only highlights Turkey’s summer has its own special charm: · Fethiye paragliding: it’s cooler up high, the Mediterranean looks unbelievably blue, and it’s 100 times more comfortable than on the ground · Antalya old town night tour: cobblestone streets with lights and sea breeze make it ten times more beautiful than daytime · Bosphorus cruise: choose the sunset trip, feel the sea breeze while watching the lights on both the European and Asian sides—this is the right way to experience Istanbul · D400 coastal road drive: cliffs on one side, jelly-like sea on the other, you can jump in for a swim anytime—better than any attraction Summary: Turkey is beautiful, but visiting in summer really requires iron will. We recommend May or late September when the temperature is just right. If you must come during summer vacation—rest during the day, come out in the evening, focus on the coast, avoid inland areas, and at least you’ll survive to take photos 😎

Exploring the ancient ruins of Ephesus in Türkiye feels like entering a forgotten realm where history whispers through every stone. While most visitors flock to the grand landmarks, the true enchantment of Ephesus lies in its secluded corners. Beyond the renowned Library of Celsus, take a leisurely stroll and uncover tranquil pathways, weathered columns, and intricate carvings that have endured for millennia. These quieter spots allow you to truly envision life in one of the ancient world's greatest cities. Pay closer attention, and you'll notice details often overlooked—ancient street engravings, remnants of old homes, and the serene silence away from the bustling crowds. It's in these hidden moments that Ephesus feels most vibrant. History, mystery, and timeless allure—sometimes the best way to experience a famous destination is to stray from the main path and uncover its secrets.

Pamukkale is famous but actually not very large, more like a museum. 🌟Must-visit attractions: 1️⃣ Hierapolis Ruins: underground city and water treatment facilities. 2️⃣ Ottoman Bath and Museum: ruins of an ancient Roman bath. 3️⃣ Underground Water Palace: an underground palace submerged in water. 4️⃣ Hierapolis: ancient city ruins, Roman thermal baths, and Hadrian's Temple. 5️⃣ Pamukkale: travertine terraces on the plain, pools arranged on the hillside with a village and distant mountains in the background. 🕙Opening hours: open year-round 06:30-20:00 (summer) 07:30-19:00 (winter) 🚌Public transport info: direct buses from Fethiye, about 6 hours, fare around 125 lira (2017 price). Private car hire is also an option. 💡Tips: 1️⃣ The sun is strong at noon, best to visit in shaded or indoor areas; 2️⃣ Shoes must be removed, enter the travertine pools barefoot. The pool bottoms are rocky, slippers are recommended; 3️⃣ Be careful not to slip! Some pools vary in depth, swimming in shallow pools is not advised; 4️⃣ Fewer visitors in the morning, better for quiet photos; please follow management rules when it gets crowded in the afternoon.
