Cologne | Rhine Riverfront, Old Town, and Century-Old Beer Halls.
When visiting Cologne, beyond the iconic Cathedral, I highly recommend spending half a day strolling along the Rhine and through the Old Town. Walk across the 400-meter-long Hohenzollern Bridge (Hohenzollernbrücke) right next to the Cathedral. As trains rumble past, you'll see the railings covered in countless "love locks." Once you reach the Deutz side, head to the Rheinboulevard for the most classic view of the city: the Rhine River, the arched steel bridge, the twin towers of the Cathedral, and the Old Town skyline all perfectly framed in one shot.
The weather during my visit was like an impromptu performance 🤣—switching from sunshine to wind and rain, then back to sun again. At one point, we even saw sun, rain, and a rainbow all at once! The Rhine shifted through a kaleidoscope of colors in just a few hours; the Cathedral looked majestic in the drizzle, while the riverbanks glowed when the sun broke through, making it a truly unforgettable part of the trip.
After crossing back to the left bank, wander into Cologne’s Old Town (Altstadt) around Fischmarkt, Groß St. Martin, and Alter Markt. The colorful gabled houses, cobblestone alleys, and bustling outdoor cafes perfectly capture the Rhine lifestyle. While much of the Old Town was rebuilt after the war, it still retains its historic charm and layout.
For a meal, you can't beat Brauhaus FRÜH am Dom. Established in 1904 near the Cathedral, this legendary beer hall features traditional waiters known as "Köbes." They zip around with trays of freshly tapped Kölsch to pair with classic German pork knuckles. The atmosphere is electric!
📌 Pro-Tip: I suggest a route of "Cathedral → Hohenzollern Bridge → Deutz (Right Bank) → Rheinboulevard → Cross back → Old Town → FRÜH am Dom" (approx. 3–4 hours). Don't miss the 1904-established Brauhaus FRÜH am Dom. Drinking Kölsch here follows a fun tradition: the beer is served in slender 0.2L glasses called "Stange." The Köbes will keep bringing fresh glasses automatically as soon as yours is empty. To signal you’ve had enough, simply place your beer mat (Bierdeckel) on top of your glass 🤣. Pair it with a crispy pork knuckle or other local specialties for the ultimate Cologne experience. One more thing: the weather along the river changes fast, so keep a folding umbrella handy. But don't let the rain dampen your spirits—you might just catch a rainbow over the Rhine. 🌈
