Sargans travel guide and discussion

#easytravelpost Vaduz Castle (Schloss Vaduz, 12th c, princely residence, not open inside) sits on a 700 m spur above the Rhine plain. The Schlossweg (Castle Trail) is 3 km loop, 1.5 hrs, +120 m, from Vaduz post office up through vineyard terraces then mixed forest — beech, sycamore, spruce — where Sphagnum pads the seep by the Red House (Rotes Haus) and Racomitrium drapes the castle cliff shade. No entry fee, no permit. I flew into Zurich, train to Sargans, LIEmobil bus 21 to Vaduz (25 min, €4.20 tap card), walked up at 7:30 a.m. in June. The lower vineyard is sunny; the mossy half is the 400 m of forest switchback above the vineyard edge where the Rhine fog sits until 8 and the castle wall goes green-black on its north face. The castle courtyard is out of bounds (prince lives there), but the forest bench 50 m below the wall gives the standard Vaduz-postcard shot. Mistake: I walked up at 11 a.m. in July — vineyard section 33°C no shade, forest nice but castle photo backlit, mist burned off. Dawn. Second mistake: I drove and parked at the vineyard gate — Vaduz parking €1.50/hr, 2 hr max, got a 40 CHF-equiv ticket on the Swiss side confusion, bus is free with the Liechtenstein Pass. Third: I cut a vineyard grape "to taste" — local vitner on a bike: "that's Pinot Noir for the prince's cellar, don't". Buy in Vaduz: a 5 CHF-equivalent sandwich at the Coop, not the 25 € hotel. Gear: 1 L water, 20 € trail shoes, 25 € shell — valley rain 10 min. Local rule: castle interior closed (residence), forest loop free, no drones near the castle (airspace), stay on Schlossweg. The moss on the castle cliff is the Rhine fog's catch — view from the bench. Opinion: Vaduz Castle Hill is the free 3 km loop that beats the 25 € postal museum for view-per-franc, and the mossy vineyard-to-beech transition is the 20-min half people drive past. Should Vaduz mark a 200 m boardwalk on the seep and add a 2 CHF honour box, or keep it free? I'd honour-box. Would you bus 25 min into a 160 km² country to walk mossy forest under a prince's castle?

Life experience Hello everyone, I wanted to share with you this magnificent solo trip I took from Lyon to Venice through the Swiss Alps and the Italian Dolomites. This trip is partly inspired by the journey of Korean streamer Jinnytty, "Lost in the Alps": Day 1: Geneva Train Lyon-Geneva: €34.10 Hotel Bernina (city card included): €150 SIM card purchase with unlimited internet: 20 CHF Visit St. Pierre Cathedral (the towers) with a magnificent view over Geneva: 7 CHF Day 2: Bern Train Geneva-Bern: €59.38 Hotel Ambassador (city card included): €191.71 – very good hotel, a bit far from the city center but easily accessible by public transport (free with the city card) Visit to Einstein's house: 7 CHF Day 3: Lucerne Train Bern-Lucerne: €28.75 Hotel Seeburg Luzern (City Card included): €180.83 – very good hotel, a bit far from the Lucerne city center but easily accessible by bus (free with the city card) 1-hour boat trip on Lake Lucerne aboard the Saphir: 25 CHF with city card (33 CHF without) Day 4: Bad Ragaz + Sargans + Chur Train Lucerne-Bad Ragaz: 29.80 CHF Bus Bad Ragaz (Station) – Pizol: 3.30 CHF Stop in Bad Ragaz to visit Mount Pizol, cable car 54 CHF to the summit (3000m) – magnificent panoramic views over the Alps + hiking. A place very little known by tourists, you feel alone in the Alps at 3000m like a real mountaineer :) Cable car descent to the town of Sargans Bus Pizol – Sargans (Station): 3.30 CHF Train Sargans-Chur: 11.80 CHF Hotel Drei Konige Chur, good hotel right in the city center and historic center: 149.20 CHF Day 5: St. Moritz Train Chur-St. Moritz: 44 CHF Here begins the most spectacular part of the train journey with the famous Bernina Express route, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage – breathtaking landscapes. Stop in Thusis to visit a cave (Thusis Valley): 8 CHF + round-trip bus: 8 CHF, beautiful scenery during the bus ride Passage over the famous Landwasser Viaduct – you can stop at Filisur station to take photos of the viaduct; I didn't do it and I regret it :D Hotel Europa St. Moritz (breakfast included but no city card) – super good hotel with a very reasonable price for a luxury town like St. Moritz. The hotel is 10 minutes from the city center by bus (24h bus ticket: 6 CHF): €100.64 + 2.80 CHF Day 6: St. Moritz and Tirano Cable car up to Piz Nair (3000m): magnificent views over the glaciers and Lake St. Moritz: 81.60 CHF Train St. Moritz-Tirano: 33 CHF The second part of the spectacular Bernina Express route – don't take the Bernina Express itself, but rather the regional train, for several reasons: the Bernina Express follows exactly the same route as the regional train and offers exactly the same scenery. The Bernina Express has larger panoramic windows that don't open, doesn't stop at all stations, requires seat reservations, and is more expensive. The regional train has slightly smaller but openable windows, you can stop at any station (more flexible), no seat reservation needed, and it's cheaper. Stop at Bernina Diavolezza station and cable car up to see the Diavolezza and Bernina glaciers: 44 CHF Continue the journey to Tirano – Hotel Albergo Gusmeroli Tirano (breakfast included), very good hotel right in the historic center of Tirano: €100 Day 7: Bormio Bus Tirano-Bormio: €2?! Arriving in Bormio, luck struck hard :D – I happened to stumble upon the Bormio Pizzoccherata, a local festival held once a year in the historic center of Bormio, where locals dress in traditional costumes and eat, sing, and drink together at a table over 800m long running through the historic center. An exceptional atmosphere throughout the day. Hotel Rezia, super good hotel perfectly located between the historic center and the town of Bormio, with a balcony room offering a magnificent view of the mountains (breakfast included): €92.10 Day 8: Ortisei (The Dolomites) Transport Bormio-Ortisei – this is the longest and most tiring part of the whole trip: 7 hours of transport, 4 buses and 2 trains, including the bus that zigzags up the famous Stelvio Pass road – beautiful scenery again: €8.50 + €3.50 + €4.50 + €7.50 + €11 + €7 Arrived in Ortisei at 4pm, check-in at Hotel Fortuna, excellent hotel with room and balcony offering a breathtaking view of the mountains: €388 for two nights (city card + breakfast included) Cable car to Seceda (the most panoramic view of the Dolomites): €52 Day 9: Ortisei Cable car to Seceda + paragliding (20 minutes of pure joy and adrenaline): €180 + €30 + €39 Cable car to Alpe di Siusi: €23 Walk down from Alpe di Siusi – over two hours of hiking down Day 10: Venice Transport Ortisei-Venice: 5-hour journey, 1 Bus + 3 Trains: €19 + €10.35 Hotel Principe, average hotel next to the Grand Canal in Venice (breakfast included): €100 + €4.50 Day 11: Venice-Lyon Bus to airport: €10 EasyJet flight Venice-Lyon: €63 There you go – the trip lasted 11 days and cost me around €2900. On the day of my departure, no hotels or trains were booked in advance. During the trip, I made a few hotel reservations one or two days ahead, especially in the small towns in the Alps. For trains in Switzerland, you should definitely opt for discounted tickets for routes outside the Bernina Express line – much cheaper than standard fare tickets. You need to buy them a day in advance and online. The route is easily doable by anyone (only the Bormio-Ortisei and Ortisei-Venice legs are a bit tiring). The trip was done with a 4kg backpack and a small chest bag. I used Google Maps for directions, Deepseek (AI) for activities/outings/discoveries, trip.com/official sites/Google Maps for hotel bookings, and the "Mobile CFF" app for trains in Switzerland. Have a great day :)

Vaduz, Liechtenstein Starting from Zurich, you can easily light up a tiny country on the map in less than two hours and achieve a "hidden achievement." 🚞 Scenic Route: Take the train from Zurich HB directly to Sargans (about 1 hour), then seamlessly transfer to the yellow bus lines 11/12 (about 20 minutes) right outside the station, and you’ll arrive at the center of Vaduz. It was gloomy and rainy at the start, but shortly after departure, we unexpectedly encountered a rainbow🌈. As the altitude rose, the clouds dispersed, the grass turned greener, and snow-capped peaks appeared one after another in the distance — creating the feeling of "entering a secret realm." 🛣️ Main Street Stroll: Städtle Pedestrian Area The essence of the entire country is concentrated on Städtle, the main street, where you can visit the tourist center, the Postage Stamp Museum, the National Museum, the church... You can explore the core area in just half an hour on foot. 🏰 Hilltop Painting: Vaduz Castle The real visual highlight is Vaduz Castle on the hill. Walk up the steep path, with several benches along the way to rest and enjoy the view of the distant snow peaks. Although the castle interior is not open to the public, standing on the hillside feels like stepping into a classical oil painting. 🛂 A Sense of Ceremony: The 3 CHF "Entry Souvenir" Finally, go to the Liechtenstein Tourist Center on the second floor of the main street (Liechtenstein Center) and pay 3 CHF to get a special commemorative stamp on your passport. Although it’s not an official visa, seeing a new country’s mark in your passport gives a satisfying sense of achievement. 📌 Travel Tips: • Route: Zurich HB → Sargans (train), seamless transfer to yellow bus lines 11/12 → Vaduz Post stop.

Liechtenstein Vaduz One-Day Essential Guide: Explore the "Stamp Kingdom" Hilltop Castle Welcome to Liechtenstein, Europe’s fourth smallest microstate. This country is famous for its Alpine scenery, ancient castles, and world-renowned stamps. In just one day, you can immerse yourself in this miniature nation beneath the "hilltop castle." 📌 Core Experience: Stamps and Castles Heart of the Stamp Kingdom: Liechtenstein Postal Museum Highlights: The museum boasts an extensive collection, including all national stamps since 1912, design drafts, rare philatelic items, and printing equipment. Here, you can deeply understand how stamps became the country’s calling card. Must-Do: Purchase beautifully issued current stamps or customize personal portrait stamps at the museum shop to create a unique travel souvenir. Tip: The museum is small and can be thoroughly explored in about an hour. Located in the city center, admission is free. National Symbol: Vaduz Castle Appearance: The castle stands on a cliff over 100 meters high next to the city center and is the residence of the princely family. The interior is not open to the public. However, strolling along the "Castle Trail" at the foot of the mountain offers multiple angles to photograph this majestic castle towering over vineyards and rocky hills. Getting Up: You can drive or hike the trail (about 20-30 minutes) to the viewing platform above the castle. This spot offers excellent views overlooking Vaduz city, the Rhine Valley, and the Swiss mountains opposite. Best Photo Spots: Look up from Städtle street in the city center or from the vineyard trail halfway up the hill. 🚶 Classic One-Day Itinerary Morning: Arrive in Vaduz. Start at the tourist center, get a commemorative stamp on your passport (fee required), then walk to the Liechtenstein Postal Museum to experience the charm of stamps. Noon: Dine on Städtle street (the main street). This street is filled with restaurants, cafes, and gift shops where you can taste local wine. Afternoon: Hike up the hill to get a close view of Vaduz Castle’s exterior and enjoy the panoramic scenery. After descending, choose your visit based on interest: Art lovers: Visit the neighboring Liechtenstein Art Museum to admire modern and contemporary art. History and culture enthusiasts: Head to the Liechtenstein National Museum for a comprehensive understanding of the principality’s history, culture, and nature. Evening: Leisurely stroll along the main street, shop for souvenirs (stamps, Swiss Army knives, etc.), and conclude your trip. 🚌 Transportation and Information Arrival: Liechtenstein has no airport. Usually, you arrive by postal bus from Switzerland (such as Sargans or Buchs) or Austria (such as Feldkirch), with travel times around 30 minutes. Driving is very convenient. Within the city: Vaduz city center (all main attractions) is fully walkable. Internet: The tourist center usually provides free Wi-Fi passwords. 💡 Travel Tips Time: Liechtenstein is perfect as a "side trip" during a Swiss or Austrian lake and mountain tour. 4-6 hours is enough for an essential visit. Language: German is commonly spoken; English is generally understood in tourist areas. Currency: Swiss Francs are used; Euros are accepted in most places (but change may be given in Francs). Key Reminder: The interior of Vaduz Castle is not open to visitors; do not trespass into private areas. However, the mountain and city views alone are well worth the visit. In this peaceful microstate at the foot of the Alps, slow down, collect a stamp, and gaze up at the millennia-old castle for the most classic experience.
