I was staying in Bogotá for a while and decided to take a trip to see one of Colombia’s most iconic natural landscapes: Valle de Cocora. The area is famous for its Quindío wax palms, the tallest palm trees in the world and Colombia’s national tree. I visited in mid-May, which is considered shoulder season — not too crowded, although the weather can be less predictable. To get there, I took a short flight to the city of Armenia in Colombia’s coffee region. I actually had a funny interaction at the airport because a staff member briefly thought I was flying to the country Armenia instead because of my Russian passport. From there, I took a taxi to the town of Salento, known for its colorful colonial architecture and the traditional colorful jeeps used to transport visitors to Valle de Cocora. I was more interested in experiencing the landscape itself, so I chose to hike the quieter trails away from the busiest areas and artificial setups. The hike itself was relatively easy, but incredibly picturesque and still uncrowded in the morning. Even though it was a cloudy day, the scenery looked spectacular: steep green hills, low clouds drifting across the mountains, and wax palms disappearing into the mist. The clouds were moving so quickly that even short videos looked like timelapses. Salento is also a good base for visiting coffee and cacao farms in the region. I went on a coffee farm tour around Pereira. Visiting a coffee farm was one of the main purposes of this trip, so I was thrilled to see the entire process from coffee cherries to the final drink with my own eyes. So, if you’re not particularly interested in tasting, the 1-hour course might be sufficient 🤔 Apparently, about 90% of the coffee harvested in Colombian farms is exported (as it sells for a higher price), while the remaining 10% is consumed domestically. As a result, lower-quality, bitter beans are commonly distributed within the country, and locals tend to drink bitter coffee with lots of sugar. However, due to the recent increase in tourists and the rise of specialty coffee cafes within Colombia, this trend seems to be gradually changing.
