Mayen-Koblenz travel guide and discussion

It's located in the Mayen-Koblenz district of Rhineland-Palatinate. Situated on the left bank of the Rhine River, it sits about 10 kilometers south of Koblenz within the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The town is celebrated for its deep medieval roots, well-preserved half-timbered architecture, and its unique role in the political history of the Holy Roman Empire. Though settled by Celts and Romans in its early days, Rhens rose to great prominence during the Middle Ages. Because of its strategic location, it served as a neutral meeting ground for the powerful Prince-Electors of Cologne, Mainz, and Trier, as well as the Elector Palatine. Royal Elections: The town was a frequent site for preliminary negotiations regarding who would become the German king. In 1346, Charles IV was elected King of the Romans here, and in 1400, Ruprecht of the Palatinate became the first German king to be officially elected on the town's famous stone throne. The Königsstuhl (King's Seat): This famous six-meter-high stone monument represents the historical imperial throne where electors met and new kings took oaths of loyalty. Originally built right on the banks of the Rhine, it was relocated just above the town in 1929. The Old Town Wall: Rhens features a remarkably well-preserved medieval city wall that still encloses the historic center. It features historic gates like the Viehtor (Cattle Gate) and Church Gate, alongside defensive structures like the Scharfe Turm (Sharp Tower), which historically served as a customs outpost and a prison. Half-Timbered Architecture: The town center is filled with vibrant, centuries-old half-timbered houses decorated with detailed wood carvings, tendrils, and inscriptions. Notable examples include the oxblood-colored Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) built in 1514 and the Deutsches Haus (German House) dating back to 1566. St. Dionysius Church: A historic church featuring a blend of late Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles, known for its beautiful, preserved ceiling paintings. Mineral Springs & Wine: Modern Rhens is locally famous for its natural mineral spring, commercialized under the "Rhenser Mineralbrunnen" brand. The surrounding steep hills are also heavily utilized for vineyard cultivation and traditional wine-growing. Outdoor Recreation: Due to its placement in the dramatic Rhine Gorge, Rhens is a popular stop for hikers tackling major trails like the Rheinsteig Trail or the RheinBurgenWeg. It is also regular stop for regional Rhine river cruises. #travel #citywall #citycenter #church #trail
