Qimen Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jul)
Guniu Jianglixi Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jul)
This summer, an absolutely hidden gem for playing in the water in Southern Anhui!
For the May Day holiday, I specifically chose to avoid the crowds and took a trip to Qimen, planning to find a secluded place to lie flat for a few days. I never expected it to be so beautiful that I couldn't stop playing around. I have to say, this is the most perfect combination of mountains and water in Southern Anhui, and it has refreshed my understanding of the area once again.
Along the way, the mountains on both sides are covered with neatly arranged tea gardens, and even the houses in the mountains are neatly lined up, which is very friendly to those with OCD. The trees are lush along the way, and there are streams of various sizes everywhere, and most of these streams are clear and shallow, allowing you to stop the car and play in the water at any time.
Li Creek Canyon - Navigate to 'Guniujiang National Nature Reserve Li Creek Management Station', and you'll find pools of various sizes all the way up the canyon, with water so clear it makes you question life. If you're lucky, you might even see a salamander.
Li Creek Ancient Village - A free ancient village, right at the entrance is a long stream, the water is also incredibly clear, and there are lots of small fish inside, so delicate don't even think about catching one, don't ask me how I know.
Jinshan Village Yan Shang - Just over ten minutes' drive from the above two attractions, there is a stunningly beautiful lake, perfect for dazing out all day. Located at the foot of the mountain and by the water, it's very healing, and if I were to choose a Shangri-La in this life, it would definitely be here.
Qimen, this scenic spot 'delayed' by 'black tea', also has the most well-preserved ancient tree forest in Huizhou, Taoyuan Village, Hongqi Village...
If you're bringing children, I suggest choosing places with clear and gentle water to play in (there are many here). Also, it's not recommended to go swimming in the mountains on rainy days, safety always comes first when going out to play.
Leave No Trace Travel Initiative: All the attractions are very pristine, and I hope everyone can enjoy the beauty while also taking care of and protecting them. Please take your trash with you, so the beauty can last.
Follow me, and I'll take you to explore more hidden gems in Southern Anhui.
Lixi Ancient Village "Play in the water, drink tea, listen to stories"
Lixi Ancient Village is located within the territory of Qimen County, Huangshan City, Anhui Province, quietly lying at the foot of the Guniujiang Mountain in Qimen, giving off a feeling of being nurtured in seclusion, unknown to the world.
It has a history and culture of a thousand years, and has produced many famous doctors, with the most famous being the Ming Dynasty imperial physician Wang Tang.
There were not many people when we went in the afternoon, and the ticket price was 30 yuan per person.
Upon entering the village, you see a huge stone stele with the characters "Lixi" inscribed on it. The winding mountain road before the entrance to the village is rugged, with dense bamboo forests. Near the village entrance, the road turns, and a painting-like scene appears before your eyes (pictures 7, 8). Passing through this beautiful scenery and entering the village, walking along the small paths in the village, you can see the typical Hui-style architecture, with white walls and black tiles, and flying eaves and arches. The village has ancient ancestral halls, temples, bridges, steles, trees, tombs, and operas, many scenes that have withstood the test of time.
The most famous of these is the Wang family ancestral hall "Hetang", built by the Ming Dynasty imperial physician Wang Tang. Wang Tang once treated Ming Shenzong and Ming Guangzong, and received rewards and titles from the emperor.
At the end of the village, there is a camphor tree that is several hundred years old, with a thick trunk and a dense canopy.
To be continued
You must drive yourself, just navigate directly to Lixi Village.
The grand theater of Lixi ancient village
It's a sizable theater garden where indoor performances of even operas take place, a relic from ancient times that has been renovated to preserve its old charm. Nowadays, it serves as a teahouse open to the public. The entrance is modest, situated by the river. Inside, there are floors above and below, and during performances, there are private boxes available for an immersive experience. One can spend the whole day chatting over a pot of Qimen black tea, slowly enjoying each play, one by one. It makes one reflect on the rich and leisurely life of our ancestors. Once we retire, we'll have more time to explore and understand. I just hope that with the country's development, we'll have more retirement funds to spend on such cultural excursions.
The Mudian Opera on the Lixi Water Street
The hospitable villagers of the ancient Lixi village specially performed the Mudian Opera for us on the square of Lixi Water Street. This is an ancient folk opera genre in our country, and it is also the most famous in history, with the most plays, the most completely preserved, the richest in content, and the grandest in scale. It is also the first drama in the history of Chinese opera with verifiable evidence, hence it is known as the 'ancestor of all operas'. Since May 20, 2006, when Huizhou Mudian Opera was listed as the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage representative projects, Qimen, as the core component of Mudian Opera in Huizhou, has an irreplaceable important position in the development history of Mudian Opera and the history of Chinese drama. The performance that day started in the square, but as the rain got heavier, we had to move indoors to continue with other plays.

Lesser-Known Scenic Spot in Southern Anhui: Taoyuan Village in Shandi Town, Huangshan
With a history of over 800 years, the ancient village of Taoyuan is located in Qixi Shandi Town. It is said that the village was named after Tao Yuanming's 'The Peach Blossom Spring'.
The scenery is intoxicating. In fact, Taoyuan Village has a simple charm, and the villagers are mostly honest and kind, living an idyllic life, much like the people in The Peach Blossom Spring. The villagers are mostly surnamed Chen. When the Chen family came to Taoyuan, there were five brothers. As the family grew, the five brothers built seven ancestral halls, namely Dajingtang, Chijingtang, Baojitang, Shenhuitang, Sizhengtang, Dabentang, and Xuwuci, known as 'Five Gates and Seven Halls'.
In ancient times, Taoyuan had eight natural sceneries, namely Shibilinzhu, Yuyin Hantan, Xintian Gubai, Mingyue Yetang, Maofeng Gonghu, Tianjin Lingyuan, Xianren Liji, and Jiazi Beiweng. Later, artificial additions such as Baoshan Temple, Yunmiao Guan, and Shenming Pavilion created ten more scenes, showing the village's beauty.
As time goes by, most of the original eighteen scenes no longer exist, but the tranquil and fresh pastoral scenery of Taoyuan remains unchanged, as does the simple and pleasant village atmosphere, like a touch of light green, a breeze that moves the heart.
Taoyuan Li Bridge is at the entrance of Taoyuan Village. The inscription on the bridge describes the scenic spots near Taoyuan Li Bridge and records the situation of public fundraising for the bridge's construction. It was written by Wang Zhi, a Jinshi (successful candidate in the Imperial examinations) in the second year of the Ming Chenghua period (1466), who was a member of the Imperial Household Department from Qimen City, and inscribed by Wang Mian, who once served as the magistrate of Yanshi in Henan, from Xin'an, Qimen.
Navigation: Taoyuan Village, Shandi, Qimen
Huangshan B&B Recommended Younan Gucun Inn, one person enjoys a beautiful view of the village

today to recommend a traditional village in southern Fujian. There are many attractions in Huangshan, and most of them have been commercialized. It is very difficult to find an ancient village that is truly suitable for a holiday. But still I found such a mysterious small village.
Village facilities: 12 rooms in a hotel, a cafe, a tea house, 5 ancestral halls, small bridges, flowing water, millennial ancient trees, ancient buildings, fish, know, black tea.
Accommodation: First of all, I found out that there is a Nanshan Inn here, only to come here. I didn't know anything about the village environment before coming. I wanted to take a Hanfu to take pictures after I came. The inn has a restaurant, which is a taste of Anhui cuisine and wild vegetables. It is very delicious. The inn has 12 rooms and is suitable for couples and families. Of course, lonely people can come here to find peace.
Traffic: The village is in the southwest of Anhui Province, and it takes 100 minutes to drive from Huangshan City. It is the junction of Jingdezhen, Huangshan and Chizhou. Suitable for a family to drive. The environment along the way is also very good.
The environment has ancient walls, creeks, lotus ponds, bamboo forests, rice fields, and Huipai buildings. Great for vacations and taking photos.
Location: Nanshan Inn, Taoyuan Village, Qimen County, Huangshan City, hh/200-300 yuan per night, not expensive.
The little friends who like the ancient village and the mountains and the scenery, there are no ones, so go and experience it.

Qi Men, a beautiful place with few people in southern Anhui.
First time visiting southern Anhui, didn't climb Huangshan or visit Hongcun scenic area. Qimen's scenery is even more beautiful than I imagined, it's not a famous tourist spot, but people who enjoy leisurely travel will find it very worthwhile.
Recommendation:
1⃣️Fengjiading
Drive up the winding mountain road, the scenery is charming all the way. There is a famous inn at the mountain top, or you can hike down to a waterfall and a stream where there are hardly any people. The natural scenery is beautiful.
2️⃣️Li Kou Town, Li Xi Village
It is an ancient village with rich cultural and natural landscapes, including ancient bridges, ancestral temples, stone tablets, ancient temples, and thousand-year-old camphor trees.
3️⃣️Self-driving recommendation: Qimen Lishan Banshui Homestay
The overall style of the homestay is Huizhou architecture, located in a small village surrounded by mountains and rivers, quiet and peaceful, with a tranquil and idyllic appearance.

Wentang ranks first, followed by Zhukou, then Penglong, and finally Likou
Wentang, historically known as Huntou and Hengtou, is located at the foot of Xianyu Mountain. During the Song Dynasty, it belonged to Xianguishang Township, Zhuojinli, and in the Yuan Dynasty, the 'li' was changed to 'du', becoming one of the twenty 'du'. The local saying in Qimen goes: 'Wentang ranks first, followed by Zhukou, then Penglong, and finally Likou,' referring to the historical position and wealth of Wentang in the western townships of Qimen.
Since ancient times, Wentang has been home to scholars and distinguished individuals, never lacking in notable figures. In this small mountain village of less than 1 square kilometer, there were 4 Juren and 2 Jinshi in ancient times. The four Chen brothers from Wentang, known as the 'Four Mountain Men'—Xianggao, Xiangmin, Xiangrong, and Xiangxiu—were all well-known figures.
1⃣️If you continue along the ancient path by the Zhuanshuiwan River for about a hundred meters and turn left, you will see a pile of green slate stones lying across the path; this is the site of the Kuiguang Archway. This archway, with its three-bay, four-pillar, and five-story structure, is grand and imposing, with exquisite carvings. Its architrave, upper arch, and floating decorations on the stone pillars are beautifully ornate. The archway was built in honor of Chen Zhongli, a public figure of the Ming Dynasty. Today, the green stones are still there, silently narrating history.
2⃣️The best ancient building in the village is Yongxi Hall, the ancestral hall of the Chen family of Wentang, which served as a lineage of officials. It was a place for clan members to worship ancestors, discuss affairs, resolve disputes, regulate rituals, and hold large-scale events. The hall was built during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty (1368—1398) by Chen Shesheng, and was named after the phrase 'Filial sons are never in short supply, may you always be blessed' from the Book of Songs. The hall occupies a vast area and is imposing in its presence, especially known for a pair of stone drums.
The village once had ten famous sights: Flying Dragon in the Morning Sun, Gorge Mountain Facing the Clouds, Drum Tower in Quiet Study, Cangxi Creek Evening Song, River Village Evening Fishing, Algae Pond Moonlit Night, Fragrant Isle Smoke Trees, Purple Stream Peach Waves, West Peak Evening Rain, and Li Mountain Distant Han. Unfortunately, most of them are now difficult to trace.
You will need to drive yourself, just navigate directly to Wentang Village.
