Sitting in a pavilion by the fields, sipping a freshly brewed cup of Qimen black tea is incredibly soothing; · It’s a culturally rich “Imperial Doctor Village” of Huizhou, which produced more than 20 royal doctors during the Ming and Qing dynasties; · The village has three main attractions, which you can leisurely explore in just 2 hours—super easy. 🏠 The Three Must-Visit Attractions in Wentang Village [1] Yongxitang — The Oldest Building in Wentang, Provincial Protected | P5-8 · Wentang has seven ancestral halls, the largest of which is the restored and well-maintained Chen Family Ancestral Hall—Yongxitang. · This is the ancestral hall of the Chen family branch of Shizao Gong in Wentang, and it is also the main venue for the national intangible cultural heritage “Huizhou Ancestral Worship” held in Wentang Village (every year on the fourth day of the first lunar month). · The plaques and couplets have a strong ancient style and contain the migration story of the Chen family to Wentang (P6). · On the doorway shown on P7, the inscription reads “Xing Yi Zhi Nan” (Doing is easy, knowing is hard), which seems to have been said by Sun Yat-sen. It emphasizes the foundational role of cognition, differing from the common sayings “Knowing is easy, doing is hard” and “Unity of knowledge and action.” [2] Xin’an Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum | P9-10 · Wentang is called the “Imperial Doctor Village” and is an important practice site for Xin’an medicine. This museum is quite large, with two floors, exhibiting Xin’an medicine culture, stories of imperial doctors, herbal specimens, and formulas. It’s worth a visit if you have time. · On the first floor, there is a shop selling traditional Chinese medicinal health teas with clean ingredients, offering various functions, priced at around 10 yuan per cup—definitely worth trying. [3] Red Culture Exhibition Hall | P11-12 · In Huizhou ancient villages, it’s rare to see Su-style architecture so well preserved both inside and out. It’s a must-visit for middle-aged and elderly visitors nostalgic for the past. · Don’t miss the various murals inside and the handwritten records on the walls from the last century, which are more interesting than the displayed exhibits. · This building was actually constructed to commemorate martyr Wang Rui, who was once brutally killed by rioters in this area (story on P11). 🚗 For self-driving navigation, search for “Qimen Wentang Sujia Hotel,” 3 km from the Shanli exit on Huangfu Expressway. 🚸 Nearby Attractions Exploring Wentang Village alone takes about 2 hours, so it’s recommended to also visit nearby Shanli Town, Taoyuan Village, Pan Village, and Kengkou together.

This village lives up to its name and fully meets my "three no's" criteria — no entrance fee, no tourists, no commercialization. Taoyuan Village is an 800-year-old village founded in the Yuan Dynasty. · Here, endless pastoral greenery surrounds you, with tea mountains, tea gardens, tea shops, and tea ladies everywhere; · It is one of the main production areas of Keemun black tea, and this season just happens to be when this year’s newly fermented black tea hits the market; · The entire village’s ancient buildings form a large provincial protected cultural relic group called the "Taoyuan Village Ancient Building Complex"; · The ancient buildings are mainly ancestral halls. Unlike Chengkan’s "First Ancestral Hall in Jiangnan," here the ancestral halls are more numerous, denser, and more active, with frequent ancestral worship ceremonies still held today. 🚗 For self-driving navigation, search "Taoyuan Village Ancient Building Complex." They were originally built in the Yuan Dynasty and renovated or expanded in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, featuring a simple and rustic style. With hardly any tourists, the atmosphere is especially serene. [1] Dajingtang The greenery and grandeur upon entering give a unique feeling, like arriving at an empty Chengzhi Hall. This was the Chen family’s school, so it does not enshrine ancestors or Confucius. It now serves as the village history museum. [2] Chijingtang Ancestral hall of a branch of the Chen family. Among this lineage’s descendants, tea merchants are the most numerous. The wall once bore the inscription of the "Yonghexiang" tea shop. [3] Xuwu Ancestral Hall The Chen family’s main ancestral hall. Behind the hall stands a thousand-year-old camphor tree; P10 is the best photo spot. In front is Shenming Pavilion, where village disputes are judged and reason is discussed. [4] Baojitang The largest ancestral hall in the village, its trough gate is rare throughout Huizhou. The intangible cultural heritage "Taoyuan Ancestral Worship" and the Golden Dragon Dance are held here. [5] Taoyuan Old Street The old street has many former residences of Chen family officials and tea merchants, as well as a post office, coffee shop, tea house, and small stores, but it’s not very commercialized. [6] Sanlian Bookstore Not many books, but definitely a perfect place to rest. [7] By Yuanxi Bridge The scenery by the creek is very natural; P1-3 are all views from this area. [8] Taoyuan Covered Bridge and Kuixing Pavilion The top scenic spot in Taoyuan Village, the covered bridge spans the Tuer Creek and connects to Kuixing Pavilion. Nearby are Qing Dynasty prohibition plaques against gambling and begging, which are quite interesting~ 🏨 Accommodation Taoyuan Village itself has homestays. Cheaper options include Wentang Sujia and Pancun Youxi, both nearby. Even cheaper, you can stay in Qimen County town~ 🍛 Dining Recommended is the Xiangli Xiangqin Local Cuisine Restaurant in Shanli Town, 3 km away. A local couple’s shop, the flavors are generally mild, with tasty mixed fish, native chicken, and wild vegetables.

Right at the junction of Anhui and Jiangxi provinces, near Fuliang — the place where merchants "went to Fuliang last month to buy tea" Along the ancient tea transport route by the Wenshan River, there is a Song Dynasty ancient village surrounded on three sides by water — Pancun. Pancun is small, with just over 500 residents, most of whom have already moved away. The entire village is wrapped by the Wenshan River, always shrouded in a thin mist, as if streams of fairy aura are rising from the mountains and tea gardens. Especially in summer, the temperature is noticeably several degrees cooler than outside. Even on holidays, there are few tourists, making it a perfect place to escape the heat and crowds. 🏠 Locked National Protected Ancient Buildings Such a small village hides two national protected relics, both locked year-round and require calling the cultural relics officer to open. [1] Both national protected relics are Qing Dynasty ancient opera stages Qimen County has 11 national protected ancient opera stages, two of which are in Pancun, with most others in Xin’an Town. These ancient opera stages are mostly built inside (or beside) ancestral halls. Besides clan leader speeches and public entertainment, there is a unique activity — “punishment opera” — if someone breaks village rules, they must organize an opera performance for the whole village. This shows how much the people of Huizhou love singing and watching opera! [2] Qing Dynasty Ancient Opera Stage - Jiahui Hall|P4-6 This ancestral hall was built to commemorate the son of Pancun’s founder — Ciwu Gong. Today, only one sleeping hall remains, but the opera stage is well preserved, with the painted ceiling and wood carvings still showing their original splendor. ⚠️ Facing the main entrance of Jiahui Hall, next to the small door on the right, there is a paper with the current cultural relics officer’s phone number (the contact on the official plaque has changed). Be polite and patient; I had to call 4-5 times before successfully reaching them. [3] Qing Dynasty Ancient Opera Stage - Dundian Hall|P7-8 This is the ancestral hall opera stage of the Ciliu Gong lineage. Similarly, the painted ceiling and wood carvings are well preserved, and the wood carvings are rare painted ones, making it lively and vibrant. ⚠️ Call the number on the cultural relics plaque at the door directly. Unlike the architecture in Yixian and Shexian counties, here near Fuliang, the residential buildings have a strong Gan-style influence. 🏨 Recommended Stay in Pancun The village guesthouse called Pancun Youxi offers very good conditions (P9), and because the scenic spot is niche, even holiday price increases are minimal, making it a real price haven for Huizhou accommodations. There is also a 15 RMB bamboo raft ride experience on the Wenshan River, which is a great deal and a must-try! If you are driving around Qimen/Fuliang, staying here is definitely worth considering. Waking up to birdsong and frog croaks in the early morning feels like living in the most pristine nature. 🚸 Nearby Attractions Pancun is better suited for immersive summer retreats or historical visits. A single visit takes only 1-2 hours, so it’s recommended to combine it with Fuliang, Taoyuan, Wentang, and Kengkou for a fuller experience.

The bluestone ancient trail winds upward, with wild azaleas blooming freely across the mountains. The waves of red and purple flowers stretch from the foot of the mountain all the way to the clouds. When the wind blows, the air is filled with the scent of the mountains and flowers. This time, I stayed at Qimen No. 9 ・ TeaGarden Banshanju Mansion, a quiet Hui-style mansion amidst the bustle. Just outside the door are Tea Mountain Park and the Old Town Street. After a day of exploring, return to the guesthouse, brew a cup of Qimen black tea, and quietly enjoy the slow pace of Huizhou life.
