Legend has it that in AD 356, the Pope saw the Virgin Mary in a dream, and she ordered "a church to be built where it snows tonight". Although it was August, it snowed here, so the Basilica of Our Lady of Maggiore, also known as the Basilica of Our Lady, was built in the place where it snowed. The architectural style of Notre Dame Church has been rebuilt many times since its completion, and the current Notre Dame Church combines the architectural styles of various periods. The 36 columns in the interior were moved from the temples of ancient Rome. The horizontal beams supported by columns are typical of the early Christian church building techniques. The mosaics of the altar in the main hall depicting 36 scenes from the Old Testament are relics from the early Christian era in the 5th century. ; The 13th-century gold mosaic "Coronation of the Virgin" shines on the dome, and there is also a 13th-century mosaic behind the corridor on the 2nd floor; the bell tower built in 1377 is 75 meters high and is the crown of Rome; the right side of Sisto 5's The chapel is of the late Renaissance, and the chapel in Paorina on the left is in the early 17th century Baroque; as a result, the façade of the church was built in the 18th century and has a typical Baroque style.

Rome churches. More to it than Vatican City!
Rome is packed with beautiful churches, whose purpose goes way beyond that of being places of worship. Churches in Rome are a fantastic example of architecture and art, and inside you will be able to spot mosaics, paintings and frescoes, sculptures and much more.
Most of the churches in town are free to visit – which is prefect if you are planning a budget trip. Some are best visited on guided tours, for the art inside can be overwhelming otherwise.

Unimaginably Immense Interiors
The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, has one of the most unimaginably amazing interiors I have ever seen in a church. I guess as one of the four Major Papal Basilicas you would imagine that it would be rather grand but it really took my breath away. It’s so amazing to be able to come to this incredible building during the catholic Jubilee!

Holy Doors of the Jubilee
The holy doors of catholic cathedrals around the world are very rarely open one of the very few occasions that they are open is doing the Jubilee. One of the most amazing and important holy doors is at the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major or in Italian: Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore. It was amazing to be able to witness this special doorway

Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major
Visiting Rome during the Catholic Jubilee was such an amazing experience. One of the things I really wanted to do was visit the Major Papal Basilicas, which Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major is one. The present church on the site was consecrated in 434 and was the first church dedicated to Saint Mary in the Western world. The facade and interiors are exquisite.
