Walking the ancient city wall takes about 40 minutes. Kids can run and jump, but avoid strollers because of many steps—you’ll question your life carrying it. The city sells crispy fish for 10 yuan a portion, freshly fried with soft bones that kids can eat whole. Wahuang Palace is in She County, about an hour and a half from the city. ⚠️ The scenic area has many steps. If you have elderly or kids, take the cable car up for 40 yuan one way, then walk down part of the way to save energy. The Wahuang Pavilion on the mountaintop is built on a cliff. It looks risky but has sturdy railings, so kids can hold on and walk safely. 🍜 Meals in Handan city are cheap. Donkey meat sandwich with mung bean soup costs about 30 yuan per person to fill you up. Stay in Congtai District near the train station. You can stroll in Congtai Park for free at night, letting kids run while adults rest. 04 Tianjin Tianjin’s summer is hot and humid, but there are many indoor activities, making it a good summer stopover. In the morning, visit the Five Great Avenues. Don’t take a horse carriage for 80 yuan per person; it’s a quick tour with nothing memorable. Rent a shared bike and slowly ride along Machang Road with your kids. The plane trees provide shade, and the small Western-style buildings come one after another, more comfortable than riding. In the afternoon, when it gets hot, head to the Italian Style Town. Liang Qichao’s and Cao Yu’s former residences are there. Tickets are affordable, indoors are cool, and kids can quietly watch for a while. ⚠️ Don’t buy “Tianjin mahua” (twisted fried dough) inside the scenic area. It’s sold by weight and can cost 30 yuan per piece. Buy loose packs at the supermarket for 10 yuan a large bag. The Olympic Center Stadium has a running track outside. Take kids for a couple of laps in the cool evening. It’s free. Fantawild Adventure is best planned for a full day. ⚠️ Buy tickets online in advance for a better price. There’s a night session in summer. Enter at 4 PM to avoid the heat and play until 9 PM. 05 Fuzhou | Jiangxi Dajue Mountain is the wildest stop on this trip. There’s a rafting route at the foot of the mountain lasting an hour and a half with a big drop. Kids over 1.2 meters tall can ride. ⚠️ Wear quick-dry clothes for rafting. Avoid cotton T-shirts, which get cold and cling when wet. Buy a waterproof phone pouch in advance. The scenic area sells them for 30 yuan each, but quality is average. Those not rafting can take the cable car up the mountain, which takes 40 minutes one way. The spacewalk corridor at the top is a glass plank road overlooking a canyon. Shy kids might cry, while brave ones run back and forth three times. ⏰ Enter the mountain at 8 AM and descend before 11 AM to avoid the midday sun. 🍜 After descending, have a bowl of Fuzhou rice noodles in town. The broth is fresh and the noodles smooth. Kids can eat a big bowl. Stay at a guesthouse near the scenic area entrance for just over 200 yuan a night. It’s clean, and the owner can help dry wet clothes from rafting. 06 Ningde | Fujian Taimu Mountain is a great hiking choice with kids, but don’t do the full route. 📍 Take the shuttle bus from the entrance to halfway up, then hike a bit to Yixiantian (One Line Sky). Kids love squeezing through the narrow gap, though adults have to bend over. ⚠️ It’s windy on the mountain. Secure hats with strings or they’ll fly off. Baishuiyang is the highlight here. The entire riverbed is one big rock with shallow water ankle-deep. Kids can run barefoot in the water, safe and cool. ⏰ Arrive at 2 PM. The sun warms the water, so it’s not cold on the feet. Remember to bring water shoes because the rocks have algae and are slippery barefoot. Beiqi mudflat in Xiapu is better visited in the evening. ⏰ Arrive at 5:30 PM. The tide just receded, and the mudflat is full of small holes with tiny crabs crawling around. Kids can dig for an hour with a small bucket. ⚠️ Don’t wear flip-flops; the mud traps your feet. Old sneakers are safest. Stay in Xiapu town. Seafood stalls cost about 60 yuan per person. Kids love oyster omelets and fried rice noodles. 07 Suzhou | Jiangsu Suzhou’s summer is hot and humid, but the gardens have many trees and water, making them several degrees cooler than the streets. The Humble Administrator’s Garden is too crowded for kids. Instead, visit the Lingering Garden, which has half the visitors but just as many rockeries and ponds. Kids can play in the caves for half a day. ⏰ Arrive at 8 AM when it opens. Before 10 AM, it’s less crowded and you can take photos without waiting. Tiger Hill is not high. It takes half an hour to reach the top. The leaning tower will make kids ask “Why is it tilted?” which is a good science lesson. There’s a tea house at the foot of the hill to rest and drink some Biluochun tea before continuing. Hanshan Temple is by Maple Bridge. Visit in the afternoon when the light is good. You can climb the bell tower and ring the bell for 3 yuan a time. Kids won’t want to stop. 🍜 In the evening, go to Pingjiang Road. Don’t eat a full meal in the scenic area. Buy osmanthus cake and gorgon fruit on the street to snack on while walking. Kids are happy, and adults don’t get tired. Stay near Guanqian Street for convenient subway access and air-conditioned malls at night. 08 Jinhua | Zhejiang Hengdian World Studios is the most exciting stop for kids on this trip. Between Ming and Qing Palace and Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival, I choose Qingming Festival for its richer scenes and acrobatics show that kids watch with rapt attention. ⚠️ The park is large. Rent an electric cart for 200 yuan a day to save energy. Don’t walk the whole park. If kids get tired and cry in the afternoon, you won’t enjoy anything. Shuanglong Scenic Area is north of the city. Wear a light jacket inside the caves, which stay at 18 degrees year-round, like natural air conditioning. The waterfall in Binghu Cave is loud. Small kids might be scared, but you can carry them through. ⏰ Enter the cave at 2 PM when it’s less crowded and no lines. 🍜 In Jinhua city, have a bowl of Jinhua soup dumplings. The skin is thin and the filling juicy. Kids can eat one after another. Stay in Hengdian town. There are many guesthouses for about 200 yuan a night near the park. You can visit the night market in the evening. Among these six places, my personal favorites are Harbin and Ningde. It's a rare idyllic retreat in Fujian. 🌿 Must-visit spots ▫️ Pioneer Xadi Rice Field Bookstore The entire bookstore was transformed from a dilapidated rammed earth old house. Old earth walls are combined with modern glass structures, directly facing the entire rice field. Order a cup of coffee, read, or simply relax. The scenery outside the window changes with the seasons, and the golden rice fields in autumn create a full atmosphere. There is no minimum consumption, please keep quiet inside the venue, and commercial photography is prohibited. ▫️ Ancient village alley stroll Walk slowly through the stone slabs and steps. Old houses with yellow walls and dark tiles are arranged in layers along the mountain, and a small stream flows through the village. Old wooden doors, mottled earth walls, and ancient wooden windows create an authentic feel with no strong commercial atmosphere.
