Where to go from August to October? This place has fewer people, beautiful scenery, and low costs
What’s the biggest worry in autumn? Skyrocketing airfares and crowded attractions. But some places, perfectly timed for the season, are often overlooked. Within a 2-hour high-speed train radius, with admission fees in the double digits and low visitor density—these destinations offer a true golden window from August to October. From the misty waters of northern Hunan to the canyons of southern Xinjiang, from the red leaves of Liaodong to the sea breeze of western Guangdong, each has a unique vibe but shares one thing in common: if you don’t go now, you’ll have to wait until next year.
1️⃣ Yueyang | Hunan
Turn into the alley leading to Yueyang Tower Scenic Area. Before climbing the tower, you’ll first smell the fresh, watery scent drifting from Dongting Lake.
⏰ The best time to visit is after 5 PM. Tour groups have just left, the sunset turns the glazed tiles a warm orange, and shadows stretch long. Don’t rush to take photos downstairs—climb up first. From a window on the third floor, you get an unobstructed view of the 800-li Dongting Lake, with water birds skimming the surface. The sense of openness can’t be captured even in photos.
🍜 Afterward, head to Bianhe Street. The third shop on the left is “Chef Chen’s Fish Restaurant.” Order a pot of spicy ginger fish head. The fish meat is so tender it falls apart with chopsticks, and the broth is perfect for soaking rice—you can easily eat two bowls.
⚠️ Before 9 AM, the square in front of Yueyang Tower is filled with elderly locals practicing morning exercises and spinning tops, which can be noisy. If you want a quiet visit to the ancient building, avoid that time. Taking a boat to Junshan Island takes just over ten minutes, but note the last return boat leaves at 5:30 PM. Missing it means staying overnight on the island, where accommodations are basic and not recommended.
2️⃣ Qiannan | Guizhou
Which to visit, Xiaoqikong or Daqikong? My answer: if you have time, visit both, but in order—small first, then large. Xiaoqikong’s highlight is water—the Wulong Pool is emerald green like jade, and the 68-level waterfall follows the trail, with the sound of water drowning out all other noise.
📍 Don’t miss boating on Yuanyang Lake, 30 yuan per person. Row yourself through shaded waterways where sunlight filters through the trees, giving the feeling of traveling through a pristine waterway.
⏰ Arrive at the ancient bridge in Xiaoqikong before 10 AM to avoid crowds and capture reflections without people. Daqikong is wilder. The natural bridge looks like it was split by a giant axe. In the afternoon, sunlight streams through the gap, making the rock walls sparkle.
⚠️ Don’t wear high heels—the boardwalk is slippery. I saw someone twist their ankle.
🍜 At the entrance, street vendors sell roasted potatoes dipped in chili powder, three for five yuan. It’s more affordable than the set meals inside the park.
3️⃣ Aksu | Xinjiang
The mysterious Tianshan Grand Canyon isn’t right off the Duku Highway; you need to detour from Kuqa, but it’s worth it. Enter the canyon at 10 AM when sunlight just hits the top of the red cliffs, making them look like they’ve been burned. The canyon narrows as you go deeper, with the tightest spots only wide enough to squeeze through sideways.
📍 At the “Ghost Valley” fork, turn right to find the naturally formed “Holy Spring Pool.” The water is cool—perfect for washing your face.
⏰ The best light is from 2 PM to 4 PM, when the rock textures are clearly visible—ideal for photos. But it’s also the hottest time, so bring plenty of water. There are no supply points inside.
⚠️ Don’t enter on rainy days. The canyon can flood, and staff will close it temporarily.
🍜 Afterward, visit the old night market in Kuqa County. Try “Zaipar Cuisine” for lamb skewers at 3 yuan each. The meat is a good mix of fat and lean, sprinkled with cumin and salt—simple but delicious.
4️⃣ Shangluo | Shaanxi
If you pick just one place to stay, I recommend the ancient town of Manchuanguan. It’s small, with old shops lining the cobblestone streets. At 6 AM, the only sound is the creak of the tofu vendor’s cart.
📍 Two kilometers north of the town is Tianshu Gorge. The creek is shallow enough to take off your shoes and wade. The stones are smoothed by the water.
🍜 After lunch, head to Jinsi Gorge. On the way, you’ll pass “Baita Temple.” The temple is small, but the thousand-year-old ginkgo tree at the entrance turns golden by late October, covering the courtyard like a golden carpet.
⏰ The most worthwhile section of Jinsi Gorge is Heilong Gorge, a two-hour round trip on an easy trail suitable for elders and children.
⚠️ Baita Temple has no admission fee but closes at 5 PM. If you want to save energy, Jinsi Gorge has a scenic shuttle bus on the mountain road for 20 yuan per person. It takes you to the top, so you can walk down without straining your knees.
5️⃣ Benxi | Liaoning
For seniors, visit Benxi Water Cave. The whole trip is by boat, so it’s not tiring. The cave stays at 12 degrees Celsius year-round, so bring a jacket in summer. For younger or hiking enthusiasts, head straight to Guomen Mountain National Forest Park. After mid-October, the maple leaves on the mountain turn vividly red, from pale yellow at the base to deep red at the summit, like a spilled paint palette.
📍 The Maple King area is the most crowded, but a kilometer further in at “Yuetai” there are fewer people and better views.
⏰ Arrive right when the park opens at 7:30 AM to avoid tour groups. The whole mountain will be yours.
🍜 After descending, have a bowl of lamb soup at “Xiaoshi Yizhuang.” The broth is milky and the meat tender. Pair it with freshly baked flatbread for a warm meal.
⚠️ Huanren Wunv Mountain requires climbing 999 steps. If you have knee problems, be cautious. But the view of Huanlong Lake from the top is stunning. If you have the stamina, don’t miss it.
6️⃣ Yangjiang | Guangdong
Dajiao Bay on Hailing Island is the most Southeast Asia–like beach I’ve seen in Guangdong. The sand is fine and soft, the water clear, and best of all, it’s not crowded.
📍 Enter from the “Maritime Silk Road Museum” entrance. The wild beach on the left, called “Beiluowan” by locals, has even fewer people. The waves are gentler than Dajiao Bay, making it perfect for kids to play in the water.
🍜 For dinner, go to “Qiu Jie Seafood” in Zha Po Town. Pipi shrimp is 88 yuan per jin. Steamed plain is fresh enough—don’t order salt and pepper, which masks the shrimp’s natural sweetness.
⏰ Go swimming after 4 PM when the water temperature is just right and the sun isn’t too strong.
⚠️ Admission to Dajiao Bay is 50 yuan, but it’s free after 6:30 PM. If you just want to stroll and watch the sunset, go then.
🚄 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from Yangjiang High-Speed Rail Station to Hailing Island. Shared rides cost 30 yuan per person and are faster than the bus.
7️⃣ Xinxiang | Henan
Baoquan and Baligou are next to each other but offer very different experiences. Baoquan is more refined, with man-made boardwalks and waterfalls in the canyon—ideal for a relaxed visit and perfect for families with kids. Baligou is wilder, requiring a long hike to reach Tianhe Waterfall, which has a large drop and mist that can drift dozens of meters.
⏰ It’s best to visit Baoquan first in the morning when the light is good and the water is crystal blue. Then head to Baligou in the afternoon. The waterfall reflects rainbows between 3 and 4 PM.
📍 Don’t miss Baoquan’s “Emerald Pool,” where you can clearly see the stones at the bottom.
🍜 Near Baligou’s exit is “Old Liu’s Farmhouse.” Order the clay pot chicken. The bread sticks to the pot’s edge and soaks up the broth, making it more flavorful than the chicken.
⚠️ There’s no direct shuttle between the two parks. You’ll need to drive or take a taxi, about 20 minutes and 30 yuan. If you can only pick one, I recommend Baligou for its more impressive waterfall.
8️⃣ Fuzhou | Jiangxi
The best activities at Dajue Mountain are rafting and the cable car. Rafting takes about two hours with big drops—some parts feel like a water roller coaster. You’ll get soaked, so bring a change of clothes and use a waterproof phone case.
⏰ Rafting is available at 10 AM and 2 PM. Choose the morning session for cooler water and fewer people. If you skip rafting, take the cable car up to see Dajueyan Temple, which is built into the cliff and looks like it’s floating from below.
📍 On the mountain is “Matchmaking Bridge,” covered in red strings. It’s a fun photo spot for couples.
🍜 After descending, go to Zixi County to find a shop selling “Zixi bread.” It’s famous here, and 5 yuan gets you a big bag of soft, sweet bread.
⚠️ Rafting hours depend on the park’s daily announcements. When I visited, it was closed for maintenance. It’s best to call ahead to confirm.
From August to October, the weather is just right—not too hot or cold. These places are in their prime. No crowds, no big expenses—pick the one that suits you best and head out while it’s still quiet. Do you know any other autumn destinations with few people and beautiful scenery? Share in the comments.
