Phonsavan travel guide and discussion

A mysterious archaeological wonder where massive stone jars are scattered across rolling hills. Surrounded by pristine nature and stunning mountain vistas, the tranquil atmosphere is perfect for history buffs and those seeking off-the-beaten-path destinations. Unmissable Highlights: · Marvel at ancient stone jars dating back thousands of years. · Wander through lush meadows with panoramic mountain views. · Capture stunning photos from unique and scenic angles. · Uncover the stories and enduring mysteries of this Xieng Khouang landmark. If you're traveling to Xieng Khouang, this is a must-visit spot to add to your bucket list.

Mulberries is a must-visit in Phonsavan — This peaceful centre is all about keeping the ancient art of Lao silk production alive, and honestly, spending just an hour or two here is so interesting and great for taking photos. It's super warm and welcoming and the staff and students will walk you through the process, answer any questions you have, and will definitely share a few laughs! Heads up: They prefer if you book your visit in advance, in order to ensure there's someone to take you around. Opening hours are 8:30–11:30 and 1:00–4:00 (they take a little break in the middle of the day for lunch, so plan around that). The whole silk-making journey is so cool! 🌱🐛 It starts with mulberry trees, grown right onsite to feed the silkworms. After they spin their cocoons, those get carefully boiled and “unspun” to make super fine threads — it’s a slow, delicate process that honestly feels like magic. For the colors? They make natural dyes from plants, roots, and bark, so you get great colours that do not fade. The weaving rooms are amazing — wooden looms, click-clack rhythms, and detailed patterns that take real skill and patience. Watching the process makes you appreciate how much work and creativity goes into every single scarf. Mulberries isn’t just about tradition, it also offers training programs for disadvantaged women, giving them practical skills (plus real income opportunities). Before leaving, make sure you go to their on-site shop — the silk scarves and naturally-dyed textiles are to die for, and they also have mulberry-based treats like teas, soaps, and lotions. We loved the free tour, but buying a little something feels right, and there are plenty of options for any budget (treat yourself or grab some gifts!). Hot tip: If you’re hanging around Phonsavan a bit longer, in addition to the Plain of Jars, check out the war-spoon workshops nearby for another round of local creativity. Details you need: Mulberries Traditional Silk Farm Location📍F58G+FR Phonsavan, Xieng Khouang, Laos Hours 🕝: 8:30–11:30 & 1:00–4:00, closed for lunch Getting there: It is about 4KM from the downtown area. It is easiest to get there by your own transport. 🚗🛵 If going by tuk tuk 🛺, you may want to organise a return journey in advance as no tuk tuks wait there. Need somewhere to stay? · Favanh Mai Hotel has great views from the upper floors · Sipanya Guesthouse offers a free pickup from the airport and can help organise tours #localcrafts #silk #mulberries #peacefulplaces

#bucketlistreboot The nearest town for this UNESCO site is Phonsavan which is around 7.5 kilometers 15 minutes drive. It consists thousands of stone jars scattered around the upland valleys and the lower foothills of the central plain of the Xiangkhoang Plateau More than 90 jar sites have been identified, each holding one to 400 stone jars, diameter between 1 meter to 3 meter. Usuage of the jars, some say as a burial urn, some say for storage if clay, sugar and brew alcohol and store. Only a small portion can be safely visited because of the undetonated bombs scattered around, do not ignore the signs and wander off the paths. My guesthouse owner had help to book a tour on the site . If you come here, you are in a beautiful area surrounded by lush greenery, nature and the jars, get a tour guide, he will tell you the story and explained, that will be far more interesting.

After decades of struggle, the Plain of Jars was eventually designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. The Plain of Jars is known for its over 2,100 stone jars, which are said to have been used in ancient burial rituals. The Megalithic Jar Sites are a major archeological site as well as a popular off-the-beaten-path Laos travel destination for Instagram-hungry tourists. The Plain of Jars megaliths, found on the Xieng Khouang Plateau, weigh up to six tons and measure up to three meters in diameter, with some still having their lids on. Site 1 of the 90 known sites in Phovosan is the Plain of Jars' most famous area, whether it's the remains of a trading route or a burial hole. It is the third World Heritage Site of Laos. #hiking#ancientlandmark#ancienttomb#historicculture#nationalpark#naturalwonders#summervacation#hikingtrails#urbanexplorer

Unique and important world archeological site! It was said to be for burial. Quite unique in the world. Plain of Vases in Phonsavan, Laos! #scenicspotguide

#easytravelpost Phou Bia (2,830 m), Laos' high point, is closed to independent tourists as of August 2026—Xaysomboun Province suspended all visits after heavy monsoon erosion, fallen trees, and UXO survey findings. I'm not going to fake a summit report. What I can tell you is the mossy highland shola forest on the lower southern flank toward the Xiangkhoang Plateau edge, around 1,600–2,000 m, is reachable only through authorized local operators when the mountain reopens—and even then, access is provisional. I based in Phonsavan (Plain of Jars), rented a songthaew to the Xaisomboun checkpoint south of the plateau (200,000 LAK, cash only, no card in the province), and learned on arrival that the Phou Bia concession zone is off-limits; the ranger showed me the Aug 2026 KPL notice on his phone. Instead he pointed me to a community shola pocket at 1,700 m on the Phou Louang spur—authorized, 50,000 LAK entry paid to the village fund, guide 150,000 LAK half-day. That patch is the real "highland shola": stunted oak, rhododendron, sphagnum on granite, and a moss so deep it holds last night's fog at noon. Mistake I almost made: I'd packed for a summit push (4 L water, crampons—absurd at 2,800 m in Laos). The shola walk needs 1.5 L, leech socks, and UXO awareness—the guide carried a stick and tapped the ground every 10 m. Do not leave the flagged line. Second mistake: I tried to pay the entry with a Visa card at the village; they laughed. Kip cash only, withdrawn in Phonsavan (Lao ATM ate my foreign card twice, BCEL worked). Buy in Phonsavan: a 15,000 LAK jar of mulberry tea, not the 60k "bomb-jar souvenir." Gear: 30k LAK rain poncho from the morning market—Xieng Khouang afternoon rain is a wall. Opinion: Phou Bia should stay closed until UXO clearance is certified, not just "trail repaired." The moss shola is a consolation prize that respects both the mountain and the ordnance. Would you travel to Laos knowing the highest peak is formally off-limits, and settle for the shola edge?

#easytravelpost Phou Bia (2,819 m, Laos highest) is in Xieng Khouang near the old Plain of Jars—currently restricted by local military posture; access is via a registered Lao operator out of Phonsavan, permit negotiated case-by-case, no walk-in. I based in Phonsavan (jar sites 30,000–50,000 LAK entry), hired a 4×4 to the southern foothill (200,000–300,000 LAK/day), and hiked the lower cloud-forest ridge at 1,800 m where Tarn Lake sits—a small karst tarn, no fee, no booth. The cliff is the west shore where the dipterocarp-cloud mix leans over the drop; moss on the rocks, mist by 10:00 even in dry season. The summit push needs army clearance I didn't get—turned at the 2,000 m saddle. Carry 3 L, no water source reliable; the plain is 1,000 m and the climb dehydrates. Mistake: I assumed Phou Bia was a free hike like Southeast Asia's other peaks—it isn't, ask in Phonsavan before driving. Another: I wore trail runners on the karst and slipped; boots. Would you settle for the Tarn Lake cloud-forest cliff and skip the summit paperwork, or invest the operator days to clear Phou Bia itself?

🏺 Plain of Jars Site 3: The Mysterious Heritage of Xieng Khouang 🇱🇦 Another site of the "Plain of Jars" that offers a charm quite different from Site 1 and Site 2. Nestled amidst nature on a peaceful hill, it is surrounded by trees and the rustic countryside scenery of Xieng Khouang Province 🌳. Along the trail, you'll discover massive ancient stone jars scattered across several spots. Some stand perfectly intact, while others are cracked or tilted by the passage of time. Believed to be thousands of years old, their true purpose remains a fascinating mystery, even though archaeological evidence links these areas to ancient burial rituals. What makes Site 3 so special is its raw, natural atmosphere. Free from heavy tourist crowds, it offers an up-close experience walking among the stone jars, beautifully set against the backdrop of woods and rice paddies. It's highly recommended for anyone who loves history, archaeology, and hidden gem destinations! 📸✨ 📍 Plain of Jars - Site 3, Xieng Khouang Province, Lao PDR 🇱🇦 3

🇱🇦🇻🇳 Laos–Vietnam War Memorial, Xieng Khouang Province This is another significant historical landmark in Xieng Khouang Province, Lao PDR, reflecting the enduring relationship and friendship between Laos and Vietnam. It also serves as a tribute to the soldiers and individuals who sacrificed their lives during the war. The highlight of the site is the striking white memorial adorned with intricate gold motifs, featuring a sculpture of Lao and Vietnamese soldiers standing shoulder to shoulder amidst a serene mountainous landscape. The grounds also feature bas-relief sculptures that depict historical events and stories from the past. For those traveling to Xieng Khouang with an interest in history, this is definitely a must-visit spot. You can appreciate the impressive architecture, capture some great photos, and learn about the deep bond between the two nations 🇱🇦🤝🇻🇳

🇱🇦 Lao War Memorial, Phonsavan Another must-visit historical site when traveling to Phonsavan, Xieng Khouang Province, Lao PDR. This monument was built to commemorate the Lao soldiers and martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Second Indochina War, as Xieng Khouang was one of the regions most severely affected by the conflict. The architecture resembles a traditional Lao stupa. Its striking white structure, adorned with golden motifs, stands out beautifully amidst the trees. The atmosphere is peaceful and humble. At the front, an inscription conveys a message of remembrance and honors those who laid down their lives for the nation. For me, this isn't just a spot to take pictures, but a place that makes you pause, reflect on the past, and gain a deeper understanding of Xieng Khouang's history. If you're visiting Phonsavan or the Plain of Jars, I highly recommend adding this stop to your itinerary. 🇱🇦

📍 Place: Phonsavan, Xieng Khouang Province, Laos 🇱🇦 ✨ What it felt like: I absolutely loved the peaceful atmosphere and sweeping landscapes. Exploring the Plain of Jars, chatting with locals, and winding down with a quiet sunset made Phonsavan feel both captivating and deeply relaxing. 👀 What stood out: Budget travelers can easily get by on around $18–$28 a day, crashing at simple guesthouses and grabbing cheap, delicious local food. Stepping up to $45–$70 a day unlocks comfy hotels, guided tours, and upgraded dining spots. For a premium getaway, a $250–$450 daily budget treats you to luxury accommodations, private rides, exclusive Plain of Jars excursions, and highly personalized cultural encounters. 💡 Exclusive tip: Hop on a shared group tour to save some cash, or rent a motorbike if you're confident on two wheels. Try to hit the Plain of Jars early in the morning or late in the afternoon—you'll score cooler temps, softer golden-hour light, and a much more tranquil vibe. ❤️ Personal feeling: What blew me away the most was the incredibly unique history wrapped in such a serene setting. Phonsavan might not be the liveliest tourist hub in Laos, but it's easily one of the most unforgettable, serving up meaningful adventures no matter your budget.

In Phonsavan, I arranged to visit a small workshop where villagers cast spoons from melted war scrap, and the whole process turned out to be genuinely fascinating. They heat old aluminum until it becomes a bright, liquid silver, then pour it into hand‑carved molds with precise, practiced movements. Watching something once tied to conflict turn into an everyday object feels surprisingly uplifting. While spoons were the original product, they also make far more items, too. When I asked they produced a bowl of ladles, bracelets, elephant‑shaped bottle openers, and a few quirky decorative pieces — all created with the same simple tools, just adapted to what visitors often like to take home. You can find these items in Phonsavan’s market or even in shops in Vientiane, but buying directly from the maker adds a nice personal touch. The workshops are easy to reach, and spending some time watching and chatting makes the experience feel more connected. I found myself quite mesmerised by the whole process and stayed longer than I expected. If you’re visiting the Plain of Jars, this can fit into the same day — or stay on a day or two longer and combine it with an excursion to visit Mulberries to see the silk weaving (see separate post). It’s a great small detour that adds another layer to the region and shows how people here have turned difficult history into something creative and useful. #spoons #craft #craftsmanship

The Plain of Jars is one of the most atmospheric and mysterious travel experiences in Laos. Exploring the three main sites around Phonsavan is a must, and trust me—with each one having it's own vibe. The purpose of these massive stone vessels is still a major debate! Some say ancient burials, some say food storage or rice wine fermentation. I'd say probably a mix but no one really knows, which honestly makes it more intriguing. Here’s the details for each site: · Site 1 (about 15km southwest of Phonsavan, open daily 8am–6pm): The biggest one! Jars are everywhere, spread out over wide-open fields with panoramic views. Bring your camera—every direction is Insta-worthy. · Site 2 (18km south of Phonsavan, open daily 8am–6pm): Totally different feel, under massive trees, with longer jars dotting the landscape. There’s a cozy, sheltered feel, perfect for wandering and soaking in the tranquility. · Site 3 (about 25km southeast of Phonsavan, open daily 8am–6pm): Adds a little adventure! Cross a, beautiful cute footbridge and keep your balance as you walk through gorgeous paddy fields, and maybe even hang out with some cows. Didn’t expect the magic to last, but each spot surprised me with its unique vibe. All the sites are pretty spread out, so if you want a stress-free day, booking a private car tour is the ultimate hack. It’s the easiest way to see everything at your own pace. Getting to Phonsavan 🛬 🚗 🚎 · Fastest: Fly! I did this - it's a long trek. · By road: You can catch a local bus or book a private transfer from Luang Prabang (10+ hr drive) or Vang Vieng, but be ready for endless scenic curves. Extend your stay:🛅🧳 Don’t just leave after the jars! Spend at least an extra day in Phonsavan and check out: · Mulberries (54/4 Ban Phonsavan Tai, open Mon–Sat 8am–5pm): For a live look at traditional silk-making—so cool to see! (See separate post) · Local workshops casting “war-spoons” from bomb scrap—unique souvenirs alert! (See separate post) Coffee and a Cake ☕️ 🧁🍰 · Mueang Xieng Café (open daily 7am–9pm - near Xieng Khouang Provincial Museum): Legit one of the best coffee spots in Laos for a much-needed break. Where to stay 🛌: · Favanh Mai Hotel (Ban Phonsavanxay, Phonsavan): Upper-floor rooms have top-notch views · Sipanya Guesthouse (Ban Khangkhay, Phonsavan): Free pickup and a good comfy base for one or two nights. So, if you’re into epic views, ancient mysteries, and a slice of quiet Laos life, the Plain of Jars is calling you! This trip is one for the photo bucket list too!

✨ Step Into Mystery: The Plain of Jars, Phonsavan 🏺 Unlock the secrets of one of Laos’ most intriguing archaeological sites! Scattered across rolling hills, hundreds of ancient stone jars spark stories and legends—making this a must-see for history buffs and the adventure-hungry. Must-do Activities: Walk among the jars, visit the mini museum for local insights, and chat with guides about the region’s fascinating history (and the lingering mystery of the jars’ origin). If you’re keen on unique souvenirs, grab locally-made crafts nearby. Top Photo Spots: Snap jars with dramatic morning mist or golden afternoon light. #winterescape Step into serenity and history at Haw Phra Kaew, one of Vientiane’s most ornate temples, where intricate carvings and golden hues await your camera at every turn! 🕌✨ This former royal temple not only stuns with its design, but its on-site museum brings centuries of Lao art and artifacts to life-including a genuine jar from the legendary Plain of Jars right in the garden! Kick off your visit early for tranquil vibes and cooler temps. Start by wandering the main sanctuary, soaking up exquisite details-look up for mosaic dragons and gilded columns! Must-do: Snap a shot from the entrance facing in for that iconic sunlight beaming through the towering doors (definitely Insta-worthy). Don’t miss the garden, where you’ll find the rare Plain of Jars pot-its weathered mystery makes for a great photo with temple spires in the background. Inside the museum, lose yourself among Buddha statues, ancient scripts, and ceremonial items. Take your time; the gentle flow means you rarely have to dodge crowds. Dress respectfully (shoulders and knees covered), as it’s still a sacred place. Photography is generally allowed outdoors, but be mindful of signage for indoor exhibits. Practical tip: The temple closes for lunch (12:00–13:00), so plan to break for a local coffee or snack in nearby cafés. Shoes come off at the main building, so wear something easy to slip on and off. Also, bring a reusable water bottle-the Lao sun can get intense by midday! #Vientiane #TempleHopping #LaoCulture #TravelTips #HiddenGems

#familytravel Tey was a first rate tour guide. He spoke excellent English, he was kind, courteous, thoughtful and had a great sense of humour. We booked him for three days to see the plain of jars and some of the other interesting sites in this fascinating area. Tey was so knowledgeable, we feel very lucky to have found him. I would highly recommend him if you are coming to Phonsavan, and if you do make the journey do come for many days there is much to see in addition to the plain of jars.

#springitinerary Hey explorers! 🕵️♀️ Just got back from Phonsavan—where ancient stone jars meet bomb-crater landscapes—and wow, this place is wild in the best way. Think Indiana Jones meets offbeat backpacker paradise. Here’s my raw, real, and slightly dusty weekend in Laos’ most intriguing town! 🪙 The Moment I Felt Like a Tomb Raider Standing in Plain of Jars Site 1, staring at 2,000-year-old megalithic jars the size of bathtubs, I had so many questions. Who made these? Why? How?! (Local legend says giants drank rice wine from them—I choose to believe this.) Pro tip: Go at sunrise—you’ll have the whole eerie field to yourself. 💣 The Bombie That Made Me Swallow My Gum At the UXO Survivors’ Information Centre, I held a cluster bomb pellet ("bombie") smaller than a tennis ball—the same kind still buried in Lao soil. Gut-punch reality check: Laos is the most bombed country per capita in history. Visit here. Learn this. 🍲 The Noodle Soup That Heated My Soul Phonsavan’s khao poon (spicy vermicelli soup) at Nisha Restaurant slapped me awake—in the best way. Turmeric broth, crispy shallots, and face-melting chili. The owner grinned as I chugged water: “Farang can’t handle Lao spicy!” 🔥 ⏳ My No-Frills, High-Impact Itinerary Day 1 – Friday Evening 4. 00 PM: Rolled in on a dusty bus (pack wet wipes!). 5. 30 PM: Sunset at MAG UXO Visitor Center (sobering but essential). 7:00 PM: Hotpot dinner at Craters Bar (bomb-themed, oddly cozy). Day 2 – Saturday 6:00 AM: Plain of Jars Site 1 (mystical morning light). 9:00 AM: Site 2 & 3 (hiked through cow pastures—yes, really). 1:00 PM: War-era Russian tank photo op (surreal AF). 4:00 PM: Mulberries Silk Farm (touch silkworm cocoons!). Day 3 – Sunday 7:00 AM: Morning market pho (extra herbs, zero regrets). 10:00 AM: Tham Piu Cave (wartime refuge-turned-memorial). 1:00 PM: Bus out, brain full of history. 💡 Hard-Earned Tips for Phonsavan Guides matter: Hire one at the Jars—they’ll point out unexploded ordnance (!!) and share oral history. Dress modestly: This is sacred + wartime land. Pack layers: Mornings = chilly, afternoons = furnace. Eat street food: The grilled dried buffalo is weirdly addictive. Phonsavan isn’t pretty—it’s powerful. Come for the jars, stay for the stories. Who’s brave enough to join me? #JarsAndBombs #LaosUntold #DarkTourismDoneRight
