The morning atmosphere is incredible, offering a panoramic view of the mist-covered valley and the town of Pai nestled in the mountains. Thailand is an easy country to rush. Bangkok in two days. Chiang Mai in two days. Phuket for a night. Another island tomorrow. Then another flight, another hotel, another checklist. You can travel Thailand that way—but some places deserve something completely different. They deserve time. These are the places where I think you should stay longer, walk without a strict plan, explore the surroundings, eat locally, watch the mornings and evenings, and experience the destination beyond its famous attractions. 🌿 1. Chiang Mai — Stay Beyond the Weekend Chiang Mai is definitely not a city I would visit for just one night. Yes, you can see the Old City temples quickly, but Chiang Mai becomes much more interesting when you slow down. Spend your mornings in local cafés, wander through quiet temple grounds, explore different neighborhoods, visit markets in the evening and take day trips into the surrounding mountains and countryside. Take time for: 🛕 Old City temples ☕ Café hopping 🌙 Night markets 🍜 Northern Thai food ⛰️ Doi Suthep and mountain surroundings 🌿 Countryside day trips ⏳ My suggestion: 3–5 days minimum. 🌄 2. Pai — Come for the Scenery, Stay for the Atmosphere Pai isn't really about one huge attraction. That's exactly why it deserves slow travel. Wake up without an alarm, find breakfast overlooking the mountains, explore the countryside, stop at viewpoints, visit hot springs and spend the evening around the walking street. Pai works best when you stop trying to fill every hour. ⏳ My suggestion: 2–4 nights. 🌳 3. Khao Sok — Don't Make It Just a Day Trip Khao Sok National Park is one of those places where staying overnight completely changes the experience. The combination of ancient rainforest, limestone mountains and Cheow Lan Lake deserves more than a quick photo stop. Spend one night around the jungle and, if possible, another on or near the lake. 🛶 Kayak 🚤 Explore by long-tail boat 🌿 Walk through the rainforest 🌅 Watch the lake early in the morning 🏡 Experience a floating bungalow 🌌 Enjoy the darkness and sounds of the jungle at night ⏳ My suggestion: 2–3 days. 🏛️ 4. Ayutthaya — Don't Race Between the Temples Ayutthaya is often visited as a quick day trip from Bangkok. That's perfectly possible—but slowing down reveals a different side of the ancient capital. Instead of jumping from temple to temple, rent a bicycle, walk around the ruins, stop beside the river and experience some temples later in the afternoon when the day-trip crowds begin leaving. History feels different when you're not rushing through it. ⏳ My suggestion: 1–2 nights if your schedule allows. 🌊 5. Koh Lanta — An Island Made for Slow Travel If your idea of an island holiday is doing absolutely everything, Koh Lanta might teach you the opposite. 😄 The island is perfect for slower days. 🏖️ Find a quiet beach ☕ Spend too long at a seaside café 🌅 Watch the sunset 🛶 Explore mangroves 🏘️ Visit Lanta Old Town 🚤 Take an occasional island trip Then leave an entire afternoon with absolutely nothing planned. That's part of the experience. ⏳ My suggestion: 4–6 days. 🏝️ 6. Koh Yao Noi — Slow Island Life Near the Busy Tourist Routes Sitting between Phuket and Krabi, Koh Yao Noi feels surprisingly removed from the busy atmosphere of both. This isn't necessarily where you go looking for endless attractions. You come for: 🌴 Quiet island roads 🌾 Rural scenery 🌊 Phang Nga Bay views 🛶 Kayaking 🏖️ Peaceful beaches ☕ Slow mornings It's the kind of place where doing less actually makes the trip better. ⏳ My suggestion: 2–4 nights. 🌿 7. Chiang Rai — More Than the White Temple Many travelers arrive, see the famous White Temple and move on. But Chiang Rai and its surroundings deserve more time. Explore temples, cafés, countryside, tea plantations and mountain areas rather than treating the city as a single-attraction stop. The further you travel outside the centre, the more interesting northern Thailand becomes. ⏳ My suggestion: 2–3 days. 🌊 8. Krabi — Don't Only Use It as an Island-Hopping Base Krabi is often treated as somewhere to sleep between boat tours. That's a waste. Give yourself time for Railay, quieter beaches, limestone landscapes, local food and evenings beside the Andaman Sea. Take one island tour—but don't schedule boat tours every single day. Sometimes the best Krabi day is simply: ☕ Breakfast 🏖️ Beach 🍜 Lunch 😴 Nothing 🌅 Sunset Perfect itinerary. 😂 ⏳ My suggestion: 3–5 days. 🏞️ 9. Mae Hong Son — Thailand's Quiet Mountain Side If you're willing to travel farther from Thailand's busiest tourist routes, Mae Hong Son rewards you with mountains, forests, lakes, caves and a much slower atmosphere. The journey itself is part of the experience. This isn't somewhere I'd recommend squeezing between two flights. Give it time. ⏳ My suggestion: 3+ days, especially if exploring the wider province. 🌆 10. Bangkok — Yes, Bangkok! This might sound strange because Bangkok feels like the opposite of slow travel. But Bangkok is actually one of the places tourists rush the most. Grand Palace. Wat Pho. Wat Arun. Shopping mall. Night market. Done. But Bangkok is MUCH bigger than that. Spend a day exploring neighborhoods. Ride local boats along the Chao Phraya. Sit in a café. Walk through Chinatown. Explore old communities. Take public transport without turning every journey into a race. Eat somewhere because it looks interesting rather than because TikTok told you to go there. Bangkok becomes a completely different city when you stop treating it as a checklist. ⏳ My suggestion: 4–5 days for a first visit, longer if you enjoy big cities. 🚂 11. Kanchanaburi — Give the River & History Time Kanchanaburi combines history with some beautiful natural surroundings. Instead of rushing from Bangkok, taking photos and returning immediately, spend a night or two. Explore the historical sites, travel by train, spend time beside the River Kwai and consider continuing toward waterfalls and national parks. ⏳ My suggestion: 2–3 days. 🏝️ 12. Koh Tao — Don't Just Come for One Dive Koh Tao deserves time whether you dive or not. You could spend several days learning to scuba dive, snorkeling in different bays, finding viewpoints and watching island sunsets. Island travel becomes much more enjoyable when you're not constantly packing your suitcase for the next ferry. ⏳ My suggestion: 3–5 days. 💡 Why Slow Travel Works So Well in Thailand Thailand rewards curiosity. The famous attractions are beautiful, but some of the best moments happen between them: 🍜 Finding a tiny restaurant you didn't research ☕ Spending an hour in a neighborhood café 🚂 Watching Thailand pass your window on a train 🌅 Staying long enough to see both sunrise and sunset 🏘️ Walking through ordinary neighborhoods 🗣️ Having unexpected conversations 🌴 Returning to the same beach twice simply because you loved it And importantly—slow travel doesn't mean you have to spend a month in every destination. Sometimes it simply means choosing 3 places instead of 7. Instead of: Bangkok → Chiang Mai → Chiang Rai → Phuket → Krabi → Phi Phi → Samui → Bangkok Try: Bangkok → Chiang Mai → Krabi And actually experience them. 🇹🇭 Thailand Isn't Going Anywhere There can be a strange pressure when traveling to see EVERYTHING. There is also an official transfer from Pai to the monastery, making it a very convenient addition to any Northern Thailand itinerary. You can arrive any day of the year without a prior reservation. Is it worth going? If you want to experience Thailand in a completely new way rather than just being a tourist, I definitely recommend it. Let's take a trip to the national park! "Huai Nam Dang National Park" This place is absolutely stunning, easily rivaling any other national park. We were extremely impressed with it and have visited twice. ✌️ Both times, we were treated to a breathtaking view of the sea of mist right before our eyes. 👀 It's incredibly beautiful right from sunrise. 🌅 The park offers accommodations, viewpoints, and a convenience store, so it's fully equipped. We honestly love it here and highly recommend you visit. Thailand has so many beautiful places to explore. Come and travel!

If you love scenic drives, mountain cafés and hidden villages, the Mae Hong Son Loop should be at the top of your Thailand bucket list. The route covers over 600 km and 1,800 curves, taking you through misty mountains, tea plantations, lakeside villages and some of Northern Thailand’s most beautiful landscapes. Here’s the route I’d recommend: 📍 Chiang Mai → Mork → Ban Rak Thai → Baan Jabo → Pai → Chiang Mai ⸻ ☁️ Stop 1 | Mork The journey starts in the mountains. Spend the night at a traditional mountain stay overlooking a sea of clouds. Waking up to mist rolling across the valley while brewing locally grown coffee on the balcony was one of the most peaceful moments of the entire trip. The homemade barbecue dinner and local breakfast made it even more memorable. ⸻ 🍃 Stop 2 | Ban Rak Thai One of the most unique villages in Thailand. Founded by Yunnanese settlers, Ban Rak Thai feels completely different from anywhere else in the country. Surrounded by tea plantations and a tranquil lake, it’s the perfect place to slow down. Don’t miss the traditional wooden boat ride across the lake. Gliding through the calm water with mountains reflected in the background was easily one of the most photogenic experiences of the trip. Take your time exploring the tea houses and enjoy a cup of locally grown tea before continuing your drive. ⸻ ⛰️ Stop 3 | Baan Jabo Baan Jabo may be small, but the mountain views are unforgettable. Perched high above the valley, it’s famous for its simple noodle shop overlooking the mountains. It may not look like much, but enjoying a warm bowl of noodles while clouds drift through the valley is an experience you’ll remember long after the trip. Sometimes the simplest stops become the most memorable. ⸻ 🌿 Stop 4 | Pai After days of winding mountain roads, Pai feels like the perfect place to slow down. Start the day at Dear Your Mind, a peaceful café surrounded by nature that’s perfect for a slow morning. Later, visit Monko Café, where the panoramic mountain views make it worth lingering over another coffee. For the night, stay in a lakeside cabin, where you can watch the sunset reflected on the water before ending the day in complete tranquillity. After several days on the road, it was exactly the kind of place we needed. ⸻ 🚗 Back to Chiang Mai The drive back completes the famous loop. Yes, there are plenty of curves, but every mountain pass reveals another incredible viewpoint, hidden café or quiet village that makes the journey worthwhile. This isn’t a road trip you rush. It’s one you remember. ⸻ 📍Save these stops ☁️ Mork – mountain stay above the clouds 🍃 Ban Rak Thai – tea village & boat ride 🍜 Baan Jabo – mountain noodles ☕ Dear Your Mind, Pai ☕ Monko Café, Pai 🏡 Lakeside stay in Pai ⸻ 💡 My biggest tip Don’t try to complete the Mae Hong Son Loop too quickly. Spend at least one night in each area, leave time for spontaneous stops, and enjoy the journey as much as the destinations. Some of my favourite memories came from pulling over at a viewpoint, discovering a roadside café, or simply watching the clouds drift over the mountains. 💾 Save this itinerary for your next Northern Thailand adventure.

Just looking at the freshly baked goods lined up inside the store was a delight, and before I knew it, my tray was completely full. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✨ The most memorable was the Mushroom Puri ━━━━━━━━━━━━━ It looks like a simple pastry. But one bite took me by surprise. Inside, it was packed with several kinds of mushrooms and chicken. The moment I chewed, the aroma and savory flavor of the mushrooms spread, followed by the rich umami of the chicken. Rather than just eating bread, it felt as satisfying as eating a whole meal. It wasn't flashy, but it was a taste that will stick in my memory from this trip. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🍅 The Puri is also highly recommended ━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Another one I tried was a Puri topped with olives, tomatoes, and potatoes. It looks a bit like a pizza, but the chewy dough is the real star.
