Novo Mesto travel guide and discussion

#easytravelpost Lake Blace is not on the Instagram loop, which is why I went. It sits near the Croatian border in Dolenjska, a long narrow reservoir behind a dam on the Lahinja basin, reached by a paved forest road off the Metlika–Črnomelj road (bus to Metlika, then a 7 km bike ride or hitch—no direct public transport to the shore). I cycled in from Metlika on a rented town bike (15 EUR/day, cash deposit at the station shop), and the last 3 km is a gravel forest lane where moss grows on the limestone cut-banks like green velvet. The "cliff" here is modest—5–8 m limestone edges dropping to the water—but the forest is the show: oak, hornbeam, and black pine with a continuous moss carpet, and in July the lake level is low enough that you get a 2 m littoral shelf of reeds and dragonflies. No entry fee, no cabin, one info board in Slovene. I swam (allowed, no lifeguard, 18°C at 10 am), then ate a klobasa from the Metlika market bought earlier (4 EUR, cash only—border region cards lag). Common error: people drive the forest road in a low sedan after rain; it ruts badly, and there's no signal for 6 km. Take a bike or a high-clearance car. The Lahinja Regional Park rules say no open fire June–October, leashed dogs only, and don't pick the marsh orchids. I met a retired couple from Novo Mesto foraging blueberries—they told me the moss road is best at 7 am before the karst warms. If a lake has no cafe, no ticket gate, and no name outside a 1:50k map, is it still a destination or just a rumor with water?
