It is said to have been founded in 807 by Tokitsu Daishi, boasting a history of approximately 1,200 years. The temple's origin is tied to Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, who prayed for victory during his eastern expedition and established the temple to honor the souls of fallen soldiers and horses. Traditionally, it has been revered for its blessings in protecting and fostering livestock. The temple grounds feature a slope where over 470 Rakan statues are enshrined. These stone statues, known as "Shōwa Rakan," began being placed around 1985 (Shōwa 60) and have gradually increased in number, reflecting the prayers of the local community.
