Olvera, Spain
Olvera is another one of those fairytale villages that from a distance is spellbinding. As you cross the rugged plains of the Sierra de Grazalema you will at once see, rising out of the surrounding olive groves, an exquisite white village with a soaring cathedral and castle at its center.
Olvera is yet another chance to go back in time and explore these ancient white villages along the now famous "pueblos blancos" route in southern Spain. If you are thinking of visiting these beautiful towns, Olvera is one not to miss.
The town was even declared a center of "Artistic and Historic Importance" in 1983 by the Spanish government.

A unique example of a church in the mountains of Cádiz
Andalusia Tour ~ Cadiz (Region)
The Archbishopric of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, located in the center of the town of Olvera, is a unique example of the mountainous region of Cadiz due to its shape and size.
Built on the foundations of a former Gothic-Mudéjar church, the church retains its apse and, together with the ancient Moorish castle, is one of the two symbols of the town of Olvera. The adjacent observation deck offers unique views of the church.
It is a neoclassical church composed of three naves, the central one being the largest, overlapping the three parts of the sanctuary. At its feet it has a massive three-part facade, rising to a fourth section - each with an octagonal shrine with an arch, surmounted by a plain lantern - with twin towers on either side of the doorway.
The interior of the church features barrel vaults and domes over the transept lanterns, and the use of gorgeous Italian marble on the altar and columns is striking.

The most characteristic town in the mountainous region of Cádiz
Andalusia Tour ~ Cadiz (Region)
Located on a mountain spur, the white houses reflect the brilliance of the Andalusian sun.
Olvera is located between the Sierra de Lijars and Sierra de Harinas, and is an excellent entry point into the Sierra de Cádiz from the north. It is set among wooded hills and olive fields.
From a distance, two buildings stand out for their height and size: one is an old Arab castle, of the same age as the walls and buttresses of Olvera, reformed in the Christian period; Another is the splendid neoclassical Encarnacion Church. The two together form the classic landscape of Olvera.
Other undoubtedly interesting sites include the Monastery of Canos Santos, the Sanctuary of Los Remedios and the Casa de la Cilla building, the current site of the “La Frontera y los Castillos” Museum in Olvera.
