Some of my favorite trips have been in countries where I didn’t have to constantly think about how much I was spending. Here are three affordable European countries that I think are genuinely worth visiting. 1. Albania Albania surprised me more than I expected. Before going, I mostly knew it for its beaches, but there’s so much more to see. Tirana is colorful and full of energy, while places like Berat and Gjirokastër feel completely different, with old stone streets and beautiful historic buildings. But my favorite part is definitely the Albanian Riviera. The water around Ksamil is ridiculously clear, and in some places it almost feels like you’re somewhere in Greece just without the same prices. Food, accommodation, and transportation are generally quite affordable, so it’s an easy place to enjoy without spending too much. 2. North Macedonia North Macedonia feels a little underrated, which is probably part of the reason I liked it. Lake Ohrid was easily the highlight for me. The combination of the lake, mountains, old churches, and quiet streets makes it the kind of place where you naturally slow down. Sitting by the water in the evening with nowhere I needed to rush to was probably one of my favorite moments there. It’s also noticeably cheaper than many of the more popular destinations in Europe, especially when it comes to local food and accommodation. 3. Bosnia and Herzegovina Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of those countries that has a completely different atmosphere from the typical European destinations. Sarajevo has such an interesting mix of cultures and history, and walking around the old town almost feels like being somewhere between Europe and the Middle East. Then there’s Mostar, with its famous Old Bridge and beautiful old streets along the river. What I loved most was how much you could experience without needing a huge budget. The food is good, portions are generous, and everyday travel costs can still be surprisingly reasonable. Final Thoughts Albania, North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina might not be the first countries people think about when planning a European trip, but that’s exactly what makes them interesting. They’re affordable, beautiful, and still have that feeling of discovering somewhere a little less obvious. We had an incredible journey last month to Albania and North Macedonia, guided by Ledio from Show Me Albania. Albania is an amazing destination, offering everything from gorgeous beaches and snow-covered mountains to historic landmarks and vibrant cities. The country’s modern history is just as captivating as its ancient past. 📍St. John at Kaneo Church 4Q6Q+CGJ, Kocho Racin, Ohrid 6000, North Macedonia I visited Kaneo Church, located in the seaside town of Ohrid near the border of Macedonia and Albania. The first photo was taken around 6:00 AM, while the fifth photo was taken in the afternoon. If you want to avoid backlighting, I recommend visiting early in the morning 🌅. From the center of Ohrid, you can walk along a narrow path by the sea, and eventually, the church will come into view. The view from the hilltop is a stunning spot for photography, as shown in the pictures. Be sure to climb to a position where you can capture a shot that makes the church look like it's floating on the sea ✨. By the way, there is no entrance fee, so you can enjoy this incredible view for free. It's truly a blessing!

I took a bus from skopje to ohrid, it cost 16 Euros.It took less than 4 hours to reach the ohrid main bus terminal, from there you can walk to lake ohrid for only 20 minutes. Lake Ohrid is famous for being beautiful, and is deep rooted in interesting history. As well as fishing, sailing, and exploring the beaches, there are plenty of historical buildings to explore along the shores. The crystal blue waters of Lake Ohrid are the heart and soul of this region. The lake provides food and transportation for many of the inhabitants of the town. One of our favorite things to do in Lake Ohrid was chartering a small submarine boat to take us from the Church of St. Jovan of Kaneo out onto the lake for views of the mountains and then back to town. This region needs to be appreciated from the water. Atop the ridge of a small peninsula jutting into the town is the fortress of Samuil. This hilltop has served host a fortification since the 3rd century BC. The current fortress built for Tsar Samuil dates from the 10th century. Visitors who climb the steep steps of the fortress walls are rewarded with stunning views of the town, the lake, and the surrounding mountains. My favourite cafe is located just outside the fortress. I took a mini bus from Ohrid center to Struga. It tooks 35 minutes only. Struga is a town and popular tourist destination situated in the south-western region of North Macedonia, lying on the shore of Lake Ohrid. For me it is ideal for a peaceful walk and enjoying a beautiful view along the water itself, the Crn Drim quays have benches and shadows and are connected with three bridges. The quay on the eastern side of the river's outflow from the lake is called "Sergei Yesenin" and is located next to the entrance to the city beach. On this quay, besides Yesenin, there are busts of Adam Mickjevich and Aco Shopov. The water from the Ohrid Lake flows through the river Crn Drim which, passing through the middle of the city, through the Struga Field and the ravine, continues through Albania and flows into the Adriatic Sea. The outflow of the water near the Hotel Drim is a special attraction for every visitor to Struga.
