I found a very retro movie theater! The spot I'm introducing this time is Onariza, a movie theater in Odate City, Akita Prefecture. Actually, this movie theater closed in 2005 and was left abandoned for nine years. A tourist spot with no tourists, which I find quite puzzling. Ogata Village Sunflower Field Located right next to Hotel Sunrural Ogata, it seems to be maintained by the hotel and is likely a spot tailored for road-trippers. There are massive sunflower fields at both the front and back entrances, along with what looks like a cosmos flower field currently being planted nearby (plenty of parking lots nearby) As a pit stop connecting Hirosaki, Aomori, and Oga, Akita, I think it's definitely a spot worth visiting~ Right next to it is "Michi-no-Eki Ogata," a fantastic roadside station for shopping. It's packed with local specialties from Ogata Village and Akita Prefecture, and you can even grab some regional products from the Shirakami-Sanchi area here! By the way, I highly recommend road-trippers to check out the cherry blossom and rapeseed flower road in Ogata Village during the sakura season. It's the longest cherry blossom drive I've ever experienced! (The last two photos were taken on April 26, 2025) Reference route for road-trippers: Hirosaki, Aomori - Oga, recommended timing: early July Akita Dog Visitor Center - Ogata Village Sunflower Field - Unshoji Temple Hydrangeas - Stay overnight in Oga. At 8:00 PM, head over to the Oga Onsen Exchange Center "Gofu" to catch the Namahage and Taiko drum performance. *Unshoji Temple features special night illuminations during the hydrangea season. After visiting Akita Inu no Sato, we went to this upscale but reasonably priced restaurant to eat Akita Hinai chicken. I fell in love with it the first time I ate it! The four of us ordered chicken breast skewers, oyako rice bowl, grilled chicken wings, and vegetable stew... The chicken was tender and juicy, the staff were friendly and the service was top-notch. I will definitely go again next time.

Odate, the hometown of Hachiko, the Akita dog. The town was full of dogs. Dog lovers will have an even better time here. A retro movie theater is located a 5-6 minute walk from the station. The movies being shown are also retro, and the handwritten signs have a wonderful charm. The interior is truly atmospheric, making you feel like you've traveled back in time. You can enter just to look around outside of showtimes for free.

The Odate City Tourism Exchange Facility "Akita Inu no Sato" was built as a model for Shibuya Station in the Taisho period, where Hachiko, a loyal dog born in Odate City, continued to wait for its owner. The statue of Hachiko staring straight at JR Odate Station reminds me of that time. Next to the city hall building in Odate City, Akita Prefecture, there's a very special coffee shop, a traditional Japanese building that you can visit. Sakura-yagura-kan was built by the last mayor of the old Odate town. It gets its name from the observation tower (called "yagura" in Japanese) on its top floor, where cherry blossoms can be enjoyed in spring. Very elegant! In Odate, you absolutely must try Hino-uchi chicken. Hino-uchi Ya Odate Main Store is a long-established restaurant serving Hino-uchi chicken and Akita local cuisine. There was even a queue during lunchtime, showing its popularity. I ate there once when I visited Odate a long time ago and was amazed. This time, the taste was still the same, a truly moving experience. Personally, I think Northeastern Japanese cuisine is quite flavorful compared to other Japanese dishes. The Akita Inland Line offers a truly unique railway experience. The scenery from Takasu Station to Kakunodate is breathtaking. This time, I visited Aringa Station, whose architecture was particularly distinctive, and the staff were incredibly friendly! The station is right next to a park and a large river! The station sells many local creative products and specialty snacks. Travelers enjoyed delicious and flavorful curry rice – it was incredibly rich and tasty! I stayed at the Odate Royal Hotel for two nights, and there's a large public hot spring bath on the 5th floor. They even have late-night snacks from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM! It was fantastic! Truly great value for money.

"Junose Fuji no Sato", a famous wisteria flower place that is at its best in mid-May every year, is located on the way to the mountains.
