Winter completely changes the way I see a destination. I’ve traveled to a few cold weather countries, but three stood out for very different reasons. Finland was probably the most magical. I stayed around Rovaniemi, where everything looked like a Christmas postcard. I didn't have high expectations before flying to Yerevan. After landing, I discovered that this city is built entirely of pink stone; when the sun shines, the whole street glows. The cost of living is really low. A cup of coffee is less than 15 yuan, a barbecue meal is 40–50 yuan per person to get stuffed, and a homestay is just over 100 yuan per night per person. How to spend a week Spend the first 3 days in Yerevan. Republic Square is great for photos during the day, and there is a musical fountain light show at night. You can climb the Cascade complex for a panoramic view of the city; if you can't make the climb, you can take the free elevator on the side. Northern Avenue is perfect for aimless wandering, with plenty of cafes and small shops. On the fourth day, head to Lake Sevan. It is a 1-hour drive by chartered car. The lake water is blue-green, known as the "Pearl of the Caucasus." The monastery by the lake against the backdrop of distant mountains is a place where you can spend a quiet afternoon. Remember to try the wild trout from the lake. The fifth day is for culture. Garni Temple is a Greek-style structure, standing spectacularly on the edge of a canyon. Part of Geghard Monastery is built into the rock; once inside, you will marvel at how the ancients managed to build it. The last 2 days are yours to spend as you like. You can go to Khor Virap Monastery to photograph Mount Ararat, or head back to the city to shop for some brandy and dried apricots to bring home. What to eat Khorovats (charcoal-grilled meat) is a must-eat; the large chunks of beef and lamb are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Lavash flatbread is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage; it is delicious wrapped with cheese or grilled meat. Dolma (stuffed grape leaves) has a very unique taste. The local dry white wine pairs well with the food. A few tips Chinese passports are visa-free; have your round-trip flight tickets and hotel bookings ready for entry. The local currency is the dram (1 yuan ≈ 70 drams). It is more cost-effective to bring US dollars and exchange them in the city rather than at the airport. When taking a taxi, be sure to use the Yandex Go app; hailing a cab on the street can easily lead to being overcharged. Don't wear shorts or short skirts when entering monasteries; dress modestly. Can't afford Switzerland, and South Korea is expensive. Armenia is right in the middle—just right.
