Miyoshi travel guide and discussion

Iwami Ginzan is Japan's largest silver mine and was the first mining site in Asia to be registered as a World Heritage site. I visited this incredible heritage site in Shimane Prefecture. Since the main attractions at Iwami Ginzan are located quite deep within the site, I highly recommend renting an electric cart or an electric bike. I rented an electric bike, so navigating the hilly terrain was a breeze! 🚲 Features and Charm of Iwami Ginzan Coexistence with Nature: It was recognized as an "industrial heritage" site for its sustainable mining practices that respected the environment without large-scale excavation of the mountainside. A Walkable World Heritage Site: You can explore the "Mabu" (hand-dug mine shafts) and stroll through the nostalgic Omori townscape, where local residents still live today. Historical Significance: At its peak, this mine produced about one-third of the world's silver, significantly impacting the global economy and culture. You can learn more about its history and view artifacts at the Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Center. Access to Iwami Ginzan is generally via JR Oda City (Oda-shi) Station on the San'in Main Line or nearby major airports (Izumo Enmusubi Airport and Hagi-Iwami Airport), followed by a local bus or rental car. Access by Train and Bus (Recommended) The most common route is transferring to the Iwami Kotsu Bus (Omori or Kawamoto Line) at JR Oda City Station. From JR Oda City Station: A 34-minute bus ride from the station front (760 yen) will take you to the Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Center. Estimated Rail Travel from Major Cities: From Izumo-shi Station: ~30 mins via JR San'in Main Line (Limited Express) ➔ Oda City Station From Matsue Station: ~1 hour via JR San'in Main Line (Limited Express) ➔ Oda City Station From Hiroshima Station: ~2.5 to 3 hours via highway bus (e.g., Niimi-Gotsu Line) through Oasa/Miyoshi, or by connecting JR Limited Express trains.

A monster is hiding in an ancient ruin! Have you found it? Beitou Museum of Art is easily confused with Beitou Hot Spring Museum. It's located halfway up a mountain. If you take the MRT, you must transfer to a bus to get there. Beitou's buses are interesting; because the roads are narrow, there are many minibuses carrying travelers up and down the mountain. Many buses start with "mini," a unique feature of Beitou. Beitou Museum of Art is the former site of the "Jiashan Inn," featuring a Japanese-style building layout with hot spring pools, small banquet halls, and large banquet halls. The view from the café facing the mountain is also beautiful. In the summer of 2026, a special yokai exhibition, "A Hundred Demons Encircled," was held, running until February 14, 2027. One of the organizers was impressive: "Yumoto Goichi Memorial Museum of Japanese Yokai." The co-organizers were also strong: the Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum and the Koizumi Yakumo Memorial Museum. Therefore, this special exhibition was "full of yokai energy." Recommended highlights: 1. Small yokai hidden inside and outside the building. Their locations all have special meanings, including tengu and nine-tailed foxes. Kappa, etc. These are the exhibitors' ingenious touches. 2. Yokai-themed Designs and Items: Yokai are a very special aspect of Japanese culture, having been very popular since the Edo period. Therefore, you can see various yokai-themed accessories and items, including kimonos, netsuke, inro (traditional Japanese cloth bags), utensils, and toys. The exhibits are diverse and rich, allowing for close observation. 3. Various Scroll and Nishiki-e Paintings: The most captivating aspect of these works is that they all have a unique story behind them. For example, "Tongue-Cutting Sparrow": A greedy old woman opens a large box, and a yokai runs out, presenting a stark contrast to a kind old man choosing a small box. I've loved yokai stories since I was a child. Behind Japanese yokai stories lies a message of kindness or a call to cherish things, which is fascinating.

I visited Miyajima for the first time. At high tide, the shrine buildings floating on the sea are truly beautiful, and I was overwhelmed by the divine atmosphere. At low tide in the evening, I was able to walk right up to the base of the Great Torii gate, and I was deeply moved by its size. There are many cute deer walking around the island, which is very calming. Everywhere you look is picturesque; it's a wonderful power spot that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. #Miyajima #ItsukushimaShrine #MiyajimaTourism #HiroshimaTrip #HiroshimaTourism #WorldHeritageSite #miyajima #itsukushimashrine

🇯🇵【Tokushima Prefecture】Free admission is a plus! Miyoshi Sports Park🛝(^^) Asobi no Oukoku, located in Miyoshi Sports Park, a large sports facility in Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, has a variety of playground equipment. This area is divided into three areas based on age, so you can play safely. The new playground equipment, which was just built in 2013, is colorful and cute, inspired by the process of wine making in Miyoshi (Miyoshi Winery is next door). Everything is a great photo spot (^^) #EnjoyJapan

#Spring0yenTrip The JR Geibi Line stretches 159.1km from Hiroshima Station to Bitchu-Kamishiro Station in the north of Okayama Prefecture. While it is used by many people for commuting to work or school in the outskirts of Hiroshima, it is also a famous local line for train enthusiasts, with some sections having the lowest usage in Japan in some years. Between Hiroshima and Miyoshi, diesel railcars from the days of the national railway are in use, with about one train per hour. With seasonal scenery unfolding from the train windows, it is used as a means of transportation between Hiroshima and the north of the prefecture, but in recent years the number of passengers has dropped significantly. There are only about five people on board trains with two or three cars at any given time. I wish there were more people on the line!!! (From a resident along the line)

🇯🇵 [Hiroshima Prefecture] Yumoto Goichi Memorial Japanese Yokai Museum! (^^) A museum that displays a collection of about 5,000 items donated by folklorist and yokai researcher Yumoto Goichi according to a theme (^^) Miyoshi-cho, Miyoshi City, where the museum is located, is the setting for the mid-Edo period yokai tale "Inoumononoke-roku" ^ ^ (^^) Since ancient times, people have created "mononoke (yokai)" out of anxiety and fear for natural disasters, epidemics, and other phenomena beyond human understanding. The "yokai" that have sometimes been respected and coexisted across generations are systematically introduced through permanent and special exhibitions. In the exhibition room "TeamLab Yokai Amusement Park," you can experience interactive works where the yokai you draw come to life in the grassland in front of you! #0yentravelJanuary2025

This fishing pond is located in Kimita-cho, Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and is quite far into the mountains. In the end, the road is only wide enough for one car, so you can experience the feeling of being in a remote area. A fishing rod with bait costs 500 yen. If you stick with it for 30 minutes, you can catch at least three fish. The rainbow trout you catch can be cooked and eaten either salt-grilled or deep-fried. It's the joy of eating a fish you caught on the spot. Note that salt-grilled trout takes more than 30 minutes to cook slowly, so if you don't want to wait, ask for deep-fried. They also have udon, ramen, and rice balls, so it's recommended to order these with your fish.

I climbed a mountain to see the first sunrise of the year. It's in the countryside of Hiroshima, but I saw the sunrise from an observation deck for the first time. Apparently, when it's foggy, it creates a fantastic sunrise. It's Takataniyama in Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. You can get there by car, so I think it's a good idea to go with a rental car. In the summer, it's an observation deck where you can see fireworks, so if you climb up and watch the fireworks, you'll be able to enjoy them in a different way than the usual fireworks you see from below, because you'll be able to see them from above, a local told me. There are cafes and art museums nearby, so I had a lot of fun.

A beautiful park with maple trees along the Eno River near downtown Miyoshi. It is usually quiet, but during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons it is packed with people. There is parking for about 30 cars. It is about a 10-minute walk from the Miyoshi Mononoke Museum. It is a small hill with an observation deck, so the view is good. There are walking paths in all directions, not just to the top, so if you want to go around them all, you will end up walking quite a bit. There are a few swings and slides, so you can play with small children.

This relatively new facility, built 4 years ago, is a rare museum that focuses on ancient Japanese monsters. There are face-in panels and photogenic spots with monster motifs scattered around. The museum admission fee of 600 yen seems a little high, but it's still enjoyable. The biggest selling point is the giant screen created by TeamLab. Children can color in their own pictures and see the people and monsters they have colored, such as Tengu, moving around on the screen. It's quite moving when you see it for the first time. Small children will love it. There are also souvenir and dining facilities. Although it has nothing to do with monsters, there was a steam locomotive on display in the parking lot.

A canoeing experience facility where instructors will teach you the basics. Elementary school students and above can use the facility for 2,000 yen for 70 minutes. I don't think there are many people who have experience canoeing, but there is a training session and you wear a life jacket, so I think it is safe even for beginners. I would recommend this to not only adults but also junior high school students and upper elementary school students. You can enjoy it even for a short time, and you can improve a lot. Swimming in the main stream of the Enokawa River is dangerous, but the tributaries are gentle and there are natural slides, so even small children can enjoy it safely. There is also a campsite and cottages on the premises, so you can stay overnight and relax.

This is the largest fruit-picking facility in Hiroshima. The main attraction is picking grapes, pears, peaches, apples, and other fruits, but recently they have also started to accommodate outdoor enthusiasts, offering barbecues and Dutch ovens. Instead of a time-limited all-you-can-eat system, you pick fruits by purchasing a ticket. To put it simply, it's a little more expensive than buying it at the supermarket, but you can pick a variety of fruits without worrying about time. It's better to think of it as an experiential amusement rather than a cheap way to buy fruit. It's a lot of fun, so I recommend it. You can also enjoy parfaits and shaved ice that look great on Instagram.
