Located in the “Yellow City” of Izamal on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, the Kinich Kakmó Pyramid is one of the most massive structures of the Mayan civilization. Unlike the crowded Chichén Itzá where climbing is prohibited, the greatest draw of Kinich Kakmó is that it remains one of the few Mayan pyramids in Mexico where visitors can still climb to the summit for free. I. A Detailed Look at the Kinich Kakmó Pyramid · Origin of the Name and Divine Incarnation: In the Mayan language, Kinich Kakmó means “Solar-Faced Fire Macaw.” The Maya believed that at high noon, the Sun God would descend in the form of a fiery red macaw to consume offerings, bringing with him intense heat and drought. · Massive Architectural Scale: Built during the Mayan Classic Period (between 400 and 700 AD), its base is exceptionally grand, measuring 200 meters long by 180 meters wide. With a total volume of 700,000 cubic meters, it is one of the largest prehistoric structures in all of Mexico. The pyramid stands approximately 35 meters high (10 levels total) and is constructed from massive stone blocks. · Unique Two-Tiered Structure: Upon arrival, you will notice the pyramid is divided into two sections. The lower level is a vast platform base now covered in lush greenery; after walking through the trees on this platform, the second-tier main pyramid rises dramatically into view. This “pyramid on top of a platform” design is quite rare. · A Survivor of History: During the Spanish colonial era, most of the Mayan pyramids in the town were dismantled to provide stone for colonial-style churches and monasteries. Kinich Kakmó survived simply because it was too massive to tear down, making it the most well-preserved ancient monument in town. II. The Latest Transportation Guide Kinich Kakmó is located just north of the Izamal town center, a mere 5 to 10-minute walk from the main square. Here are the best ways to reach Izamal: From Mérida (Most Recommended and Convenient) · Public Bus: Head to the Terminal Noreste in downtown Mérida (near the intersection of Calle 67 and 50). Take an Autobuses Oriente or Noreste Yucatán bus. They depart every 1 to 2 hours during the day. A one-way ticket costs about $40 - $55 MXN, and the journey takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. · Driving: Take Federal Highway 180 from Mérida and connect to Highway 11. The drive takes about 1 hour on well-maintained roads. Street parking is available around the town's main attractions. From Cancún or Tulum · ADO Bus: Long-distance buses run directly from Cancún to Izamal, with a travel time of about 3 to 3.5 hours. · Guided Day Tours: If you prefer not to handle the logistics, you can book a “Chichén Itzá + Cenote + Izamal Yellow City” day tour from Cancún or Mérida, which typically includes time to explore this pyramid.

Izamal, Mexico’s famous "Yellow Magic Town," is a "City of Three Cultures" that perfectly blends Mayan ruins with Spanish colonial architecture. Every building in town is painted a bright sun-yellow, creating a striking visual impact under the sun and making it one of the most photogenic destinations on the Yucatán Peninsula. 🗺️ Top Sights & Activity Guide 1. Convento de San Antonio de Padua — The Main Highlight · Highlight: Built on the foundation of a Mayan pyramid, this yellow convent boasts the second-largest closed atrium in the Western Hemisphere (second only to the Vatican). Photo Angles:• Step into the massive atrium and use the golden arches that stretch into the distance as a backdrop for geometric, high-fashion shots. · In the evening, the low-angled sunlight turns the entire monastery a shimmering gold, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. Admission: Free (except for some special exhibitions or night light shows) 2. Vintage Horse-Drawn Carriage (Coche de Caballos) Experience · How to ride: Right next to the main square in the city center (Parque Izamal / Plaza Principal), you’ll see rows of brightly decorated traditional carriages waiting for passengers. · Price: Approximately 300 to 450 Mexican Pesos (MXN) per carriage, which can hold 2–4 people. · Duration: About 45 minutes. · Route: The driver will take you through the golden cobblestone streets, passing by Capilla de los Remedios (a small chapel), the old train station, and the town's Mayan ruins, eventually looping back to the main square. Drivers usually provide a brief guided tour. · Photo Tip: While riding, have a companion take a dynamic shot of the carriage passing the yellow walls from a street corner for a vintage, exotic feel. 3. Side Trip: Kinich Kakmó Pyramid (Pirámide Kinich Kakmó) · Located just a 5-10 minute walk from the main square, it is the largest Mayan pyramid in town. · It is completely free to enter and allows climbing. From the top, you get a 360-degree panoramic view of the yellow town and the surrounding lush green jungle—an incredible sight. 🚌 Travel Guide: How to Get to Izamal Izamal is located about 70 km northeast of Mérida, the capital of Yucatán. A day trip from Mérida is the most convenient way to visit. Method 1: Highly Recommended! Take a Second-Class Bus (Segunda Clase) — Best Value & Direct to City Center Since ADO first-class buses no longer have direct routes to the Izamal city center, second-class buses are the primary option. · Departure Station: Go to Terminal Noreste (near the intersection of Calle 67 and 50) or Terminal Oriente in downtown Mérida. · Bus Companies: Autobuses Oriente or Noreste Yucatán. · Schedule & Fare: Buses run every 1 to 2 hours during the day. A one-way ticket is about $40 - $55 MXN (very affordable). · Travel Time: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours (with stops at small towns along the way). · Arrival: You will arrive directly at the bus station in the heart of Izamal. The yellow convent is just a 2-minute walk away. It’s recommended to take a photo of the return schedule at the window when you arrive. Method 2: Most Flexible! Car Rental or Guided Tour · Self-Driving: Take Federal Highway 180 from Mérida and connect to Highway 11. The drive takes about 1 hour. Road conditions are good, and you can find street parking near the attractions. 💡 Pro Travel Tips · Best Time to Visit: It’s best to visit in the morning (before 10:00 AM) or late afternoon (after 4:00 PM). Midday in the Yucatán Peninsula is extremely hot with harsh sunlight, which can actually make it harder to capture the warm, soft texture of the yellow buildings. · What to Wear: Highly recommend wearing white, blue, or other bright, contrasting colors. Against the all-yellow town, white or solid-colored outfits stand out the most, making your photos look instantly professional.

Sports Bar La Gartos is one of my favorite hangout spots, especially during the FIFA season. It was pretty much inevitable that I’d end up bringing my friends here as well. Compared to a lot of other places, this spot really stands out for its food—it’s not just about the football screenings. The match-day setup actually makes it even better, as it becomes more affordable and convenient overall. For football fans, it’s especially useful since you don’t need to worry about eating elsewhere and then heading out to find a place showing the game. You can just come here, have dinner, and enjoy the live screening in one place. Overall, it’s definitely a solid option and well worth trying. #footballmatchfoodmap

📍Pink Lake🦩 Located about 300-350 km north of Cancun, on the Yucatan Peninsula💓 Although it is called Pink Lake (Pink Lagoon), it is actually a salt flat, just like the Uyuni Salt Flats, and appears beautifully pink due to phytoplankton‼🥰 The deep blue sky, white clouds, and pink lake create a truly breathtaking view🥺🥺 Some people say it wasn't as pink as they expected, but for me, it was exactly as shown in the photos😳‼ The pink color is especially vivid in the afternoon during winter when the sun is high🦩 I've always wanted to visit this place, and I'm so glad I finally did. I highly recommend it to everyone🥰

#wecreate Villa Mercedes Curio Collection is one of the latest and nicest hotels by Hilton in Merida, a recent adquisition and renovation had made this antique hotel to a new level. From the pool in between antique buildings and gardens to the gorgeous wood covered bar, the relaxing lobby and the friendly staff, this has been one of my nicest places in Merida, fully recommend. The spacious rooms and city views combined with the centrical location makes it just perfect for me. #hotel #merida #mexico #travel #yucatan #coffee #boutiquehotel

Address: C. 56 451, Zona Paseo Montejo, Centro, 97000 Mérida, Yuc., Mexico Atmosphere/Facilities: Features: This restaurant is located in Mexico. It is an American restaurant. It also has a lot of local Mexican food, which is quite delicious. I highly recommend quesadillas and fajitas. They are very local dishes. The price of the restaurant is similar to that of Taiwan, and the service attitude is also very good. If you are in You can try it in the city Price per person: 400twd Rating: 4.0

Merida is located in the northwest of the state of Yucatán. This colonial city has all the urban amenities you’d expect from Yucatán capital city, yet still retain the quaint small-town charm and colonial buildings. First things first, you might be wondering. What’s a Cenote? A water-filled cave or sinkhole, a Cenote is a body of water formed by the gradual dissolving highly porous limestone causing a collapse of the underground rock. Best Merida Cenotes. You might have guessed this, but by far the best way to visit all the best Cenotes is by a tour. Most of the Cenotes near Merida are found in rural part of Yucatán Peninsula, if you rent a car you can drive to each one yourself.

Chichen Itza is one of the most important landmarks and tourist attractions of Yucatan. As this landmark is very far from the nearest city, you need to arrange private transportation to get there or buy a half day tour which is quite popular. This tour will arrange round trip transportation in comfortable buses. The temple is really well preserved and is a pleasure to see in person. Be aware of the number of people selling souvenirs, they are everywhere so you must be patient and constantly say no. This is an incredible experience for those who love history and culture. #createwithtrip #chichenitza #mexico

When traveling in Mexico, my favorite city is Merida. Mrida, the southeastern city of Mexico, the capital of Yucatan, with a population of 661,000 (2000), is an important cultural and tourist city of Mexico, and the famous attraction is the cathedral. I have always loved buildings like the ancestral hall. Therefore, I spent most of my time traveling in the city in the visit and shooting of the church. Especially when the night comes, there are local artists in front of the church to set the stage, perform flamenco dance and guitar performance, and you can integrate it without spending a penny. When you see the rise, you can also dance with the rhythm of music in the audience. That atmosphere is really good. The city has numerous colonial buildings, including the 16th century cathedral. It is a tourist base to the surrounding ancient Mayan cities such as Chichen Itza, Dzibilchaltn, Uxmal and Kabh.

We came to a small, unique city called Isamar. This is not a popular destination. There is no introduction to this city on the Internet, but it is a place that makes me feel very comfortable. The reason why it is called Huangcheng is because every building in the city is bright yellow. It is 70 km from Merida and is a colonial style gem. Once, it was used to worship the Mayan Supreme God, Izumna, and built more than a dozen pyramids. Later Spanish colonists occupied here and built a giant Franciscan monastery. is rated as the world's nine color city. This is not a color palette that God has overturned, but a brush that is unique in the hands of the painter.

I rented a bike for 2 days during my 2-week holiday, and my experience with Two Fine Wheels was fantastic. The prices were excellent, and the bikes were top-notch. The Merida, in particular, was perfect for tackling the mountains. They even sent me some great GPX routes via WhatsApp. Everything you might need—like a computer holder, helmets, pedals, and gels—can be rented or purchased at very reasonable prices. Overall, I was extremely satisfied. Thank you, Two Fine Wheels, for the excellent service and help. I’ll be back! - Eric

The hotel exceeded all expectations. It's like a paradise in the city—quiet, beautiful, with an incredible amount of greenery. The breakfasts were excellent, the pool spotless, and the staff extremely kind and attentive. The ocean is just across the road. We had such a wonderful five-night stay that we're already eager to return!

Everyone told me I had to brace myself for an overwhelming wall of cruise ship crowds, hyper-commercialized souvenir shops, and blistering tourist traps packed tightly around the Caribbean coast, so I prepared myself for an exhausting resort-town circus. But the moment I caught an early flight inland, slipped away from the coastal heat, and wandered quietly through the pastel-tinted neoclassical streets of Mérida's historic center at dawn while local bakers unloaded fresh pastries and church bells echoed across empty plazas without a single tour guide shouting in my ear, the true, vibrant, and timeless heart of the Yucatán hit me like a physical breath. Standing before those grand stone mansions bathed in soft morning light in absolute tranquility felt less like standard sightseeing and more like stepping straight into a living, colonial storybook. 🏛️✨ . 📅 What I experienced · Escaping the Coastal Hustle: Walking the peaceful, shaded sidewalks of Paseo de Montejo as morning vendors set up their wooden stalls far away from the beach resort noise. · Catching the Sunrise on Plaza Grande: Watching the first golden rays illuminate the historic San Ildefonso Cathedral, the oldest cathedral on the American mainland, in complete morning solitude. · Exploring Hidden Neighborhood Parks: Wandering through the quiet, leafy squares of Barrio de Santiago and Santa Ana where local residents gather under giant laurel trees to escape the midday heat. . 🏨 Where I stayed · I stayed in a charming, beautifully restored colonial boutique hotel featuring high timber ceilings and a central open-air courtyard with a cooling plunge pool. Waking up to the soft rustle of banana palms and the sweet scent of tropical flowers felt grounded and deeply authentic. 🛏️☕ . 🍴 My culinary highlights · Yucatecan gastronomy is an exquisite blend of ancient Mayan traditions and bold Spanish flavors. I sat at a modest open-air market stall and savored slow-roasted *cochinita pibil* (pork marinated in achiote and sour orange, wrapped in banana leaves and baked to tender perfection), served with pickled red onions and warm, hand-pressed corn tortillas. 🌮🌶️ . 📌 My tips for visiting · Start Your Exploring at Dawn: The temperature and humidity in the Yucatán rise rapidly by midday, making early morning the absolute best and most comfortable time to explore the city on foot. · Venture Out to Remote Cenotes: Skip the crowded tourist cenotes right next to major highways and rent a car to find quiet, subterranean limestone sinkholes hidden deep in the surrounding jungle. · Stay in the Historic Center: Choosing a boutique hotel right in the historic core lets you walk everywhere safely and experience the authentic evening street life (*Noche Mexicana*) without relying on taxis. 📸🎒 . #Merida #Yucatan #MexicoTravel #IntimateTravel #HiddenGems #ColonialCity #TravelDeep #BucketList #ExploreMexico #TravelDiaries

In August 2026, I finally took the 7-day, 6-night trip to Mexico I’ve always dreamed of 🇲🇽 For some reason, many people around me have visited Mexico, so even though it’s a far-off destination, it’s always felt somewhat familiar. On this trip, I didn’t just stay in Mexico City; I used Mérida on the Yucatán Peninsula as a home base to venture out to Campeche and Celestún as well! 📍 Places Visited Mérida The capital of Yucatán State, located in the northwestern part of the peninsula. It’s filled with architecture that echoes the Spanish colonial era and beautiful, colorful streets. Campeche A port city on the Gulf of Mexico, famous for its historic walled city. The old town, lined with colorful buildings, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Celestún A nature-rich town on the Gulf of Mexico in western Yucatán. The surrounding area is a biosphere reserve, famous for being a spot where you can see wild flamingos. Mexico City Mexico’s capital, a massive metropolis where history and modern culture blend seamlessly. It offers a wide range of attractions, from museums and historic buildings to bustling markets. 🗓️ 7-Day Itinerary DAY 1 | Japan → Mexico City → Mérida ✈️ Arrived in Mexico City ↓ Explored the city during a 6-hour layover ↓ Visited the Vasconcelos Library (Biblioteca Vasconcelos) ↓ Night flight to Mérida DAY 2 | Mérida → Campeche 🚆 Took the Maya Train to Campeche ↓ Sightseeing in Campeche DAY 3 | Campeche → Mérida 🚆 Sightseeing in Campeche ↓ Took the Maya Train back to Mérida ↓ Strolled through Mérida DAY 4 | Celestún 🦩 From Mérida to Celestún ↓ Joined a flamingo tour ↓ Returned to Mérida DAY 5 | Mérida → Mexico City ✈️ Strolled around Mérida ↓ Flight to Mexico City ↓ Shopping at the market DAY 6–7 | Mexico City → Japan ✈️ Heading home while enjoying the long flight! 🌴 Personal Highlights & Impressions What left the biggest impression on me during this trip was the atmosphere in Mérida and Campeche. I had some concerns about safety in Mexico, but in Mérida, the vibe was very peaceful, with people gathered in the plazas even at night to enjoy music and dancing. One thing that surprised me was how few Asian tourists there were! Especially in Mérida and Campeche, I saw very few Asian people, let alone Japanese travelers. It felt quite different from my usual trips abroad. Another thing I realized was the importance of Spanish 😂 Even in tourist areas, there were moments where English wasn't spoken. Since I know almost no Spanish, my travel companion really saved me. I really wish I had learned at least some basic Spanish before going...! That’s my one small regret from the trip 😂 It was a busy itinerary with a lot of moving around, but from city walks and train rides to seeing flamingos, it was an incredibly fulfilling journey 🇲🇽✨

This is my second visit, and this stay at Casa de los Artistas was even better. The staff members are incredibly kind and attentive. I’d like to especially thank and recognize Paloma and Christopher at the rooftop of Casa de los Artistas for their unmatched hospitality. Our butler René was always attentive to our questions and needs. Emiliano, the waiter at the Encanta restaurant, provided excellent service. And Jorge, who was at the infinity pool area, also stood out. It was a fantastic stay. I’ve always thought it's worth every penny spent. My wife and I will definitely be back soon.

Soco is a charming little cafe with plenty of personality. One thing I’ve always liked is how the space feels different depending on where you sit. The front section has a softer, more decorative style, while the other side has a completely different atmosphere and features a flat-screen setup that works particularly well for sports and World Cup matches. The cafe also changes things up with different themes from time to time, which keeps the experience feeling fresh. I first stopped by after noticing one of their football promotions and ended up bringing a few friends along. It turned out to be a surprisingly enjoyable match-day spot. While it doesn’t have a giant projector screen like some dedicated sports venues, it more than makes up for it with the value. The deals, food sets, and drink offers were excellent, and the overall experience felt relaxed and affordable. Sometimes comfort and good value matter more than having the biggest screen in town, and Soco gets that balance right. It’s definitely somewhere I can see myself returning to with friends for future matches and hangouts. #myfootballnight

There are some places that naturally become local favorites because they offer a little bit of everything, and this is certainly one of them. During the day, the atmosphere feels more like a relaxed bistro or open-air café, making it a pleasant spot for coffee, meals, and casual gatherings. As the evening progresses, the venue takes on a livelier character, with the bar area becoming a popular place to unwind and socialize. While it may initially seem a little more upscale than some other football-viewing venues, Talula Bar Natural offers excellent value once you take advantage of the available specials. During the FIFA World Cup, the match-time menus and promotions made the experience surprisingly affordable, especially considering the quality of the setting and the opportunity to enjoy live screenings in such a comfortable environment. Between the atmosphere, food and drink options, and the overall experience, this is easily one of the better places to watch a match and one I would happily recommend to everyone. #bestplacestowatchfootball

Mercado is a modern, stylish cafe that has become one of my regular spots whenever I need a comfortable place to work during the day. The steady Wi-Fi, quality coffee, and excellent brunch sets make it easy to settle in for a few hours, and the overall atmosphere is relaxed without feeling too quiet or too busy. It’s the kind of place that naturally fits into a productive workday. What surprised me was how well it transitions into a football viewing venue later in the day. After noticing their advertised match-day offers, I decided to stay back one evening and see what the experience was like during a live screening. It turned out to be exactly the kind of setup I enjoy comfortable, not overcrowded, and with prices that remained very reasonable even during match hours. Being able to work, enjoy good food and coffee, and then stay on to watch football without changing locations is a combination that works extremely well. It's definitely a place I'll keep coming back to whenever the opportunity arises. #myfootballnight

There’s something special about a place where people genuinely seem happy to be there, and that was the feeling I got during a recent match-day visit. The atmosphere was welcoming from the moment I arrived, with groups of football fans showing up well before kickoff to grab food, settle in, and enjoy the pre-match excitement. What stood out most was how social the environment felt, people were chatting across tables, discussing the game, and making the most of the occasion. A big part of that comes from the hospitality that the place is known for. Bryan, the owner has built a reputation locally for being friendly and welcoming, and that energy seems to carry through the entire venue. Alongside the excellent coffee and comfortable hangout space, there were some great food deals available during the match, which only added to the experience. For football fans looking for somewhere to arrive early, enjoy the build-up, and spend a few relaxed hours around fellow supporters, this is definitely a place worth checking out. I would definitely come back. #footballfanculture

What started as curiosity about the match-hour specials turned into one of the most enjoyable football nights we've had in a long time. The open-air setup gives the place a relaxed and spacious feel, while the atmosphere during the live match screening made it even more exciting. We came with a group of friends, grabbed some of the special offers, and quickly settled in for a great evening. The food selection was excellent, the deals were genuinely worth it, and the overall ambience made it easy to spend hours here without noticing the time pass. Between the football, good company, and consistently enjoyable food, everything came together perfectly. This is definitely a spot we'll be returning to whenever there's a big match on. #myfootballnight

Some places make it easy to understand why they have such a loyal following. This is one of those spots where there always seems to be a good mix of locals, regulars, and football fans stopping by throughout the week. The atmosphere feels lively without being overwhelming, and during the World Cup season the multiple flat screens ensure there's always a good view of the action no matter where you're seated. I ended up visiting with friends after hearing about the special match-day deals, and it turned into a great evening. We spent our time exploring the menu, trying a variety of dishes, and watching the game without feeling like we were paying inflated event prices. By the end of the night, Ramiro Cocina had checked all the right boxes good food, reasonable prices, plenty of football, and a comfortable atmosphere. It's the kind of place that's easy to return to, and I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a regular match-day destination for us. #bestplacestowatchfootball
