I did the 4-day version (recommended over 3-day) and the caldera day alone justifies the pain. Below is the Sasa-specific logistics, not the full circuit. Getting there: from Kampala, bus to Mbale (4 hrs, 25,000 UGX), then boda-boda to Budadiri (25 km, 10,000 UGX). UWA office in Budadiri issues permits: 35 USD/day foreign non-resident + 20 USD guide/day + 15 USD armed ranger/day (mandatory, 2 rangers per group). Cash USD or UGX, cards not taken. Porters 10 USD/day, worth it — the Day 1 wall (“Wall of Death”, Mudange cliffs) is a 1,200 m vertical on metal stairs and eroded switchbacks; my 14 kg pack would have killed me. Day 1: Budadiri → Bumasola → Mudange cliffs → Sasa River Camp (2,900 m) → Mude Cave Camp (3,500 m). 7–8 hrs. The caldera appears at hour 2 from the cliff top — a green amphitheatre 8 km wide. Day 2: pre-dawn to Wagagai, 4–5 hrs up giant lobelia moorland, then 1 km along the rim itself: the edge of the caldera, not the peak. The rim walk (Jackson’s Pool side) is the highlight — you stand where the volcano’s old cone collapsed, looking down at hot springs and the Kenyan side. Cross-border note: you can descend into Kenya’s Elgon NP, but that needs pre-cleared UWA/KWS paperwork — not a walk-up. I stayed Ugandan side. Is the Sasa “too touristy”? It is the only developed trail on Elgon, so yes — but with 4 days you meet maybe 10 other walkers total. The caldera rim at 06:00 with nobody else there is one of the quietest places in East Africa. Would you trade a crowd-free Kilimanjaro for a steep, broken-staircase Elgon? I already did.
