It’s an endless, arid expanse that looks like an icy wasteland, yet it's baking hot. Make sure to pack some quality sunglasses; the glare from the salt is blinding. We crashed at a modest hotel in Tozeur for around €35 a night. Thankfully, dinner here was a steal: a local stuffed pastry (brik), some couscous, and a large bottle of water set me back less than 12 TND. · *Day 5: Matmata & El Jem** In Matmata, I checked out the troglodyte homes (underground cave dwellings). As a film geek, this was the absolute highlight of the trip: it’s the actual set for Luke Skywalker's childhood home on the planet Tatooine. It felt totally surreal to actually walk around there. Afterwards, we drove to the amphitheater of El Jem. Entrance fee: 12 TND (plus an extra 1 TND if you want to use a camera). This structure is almost as awe-inspiring as the Colosseum in Rome, just without the massive queues. I climbed all the way up to the top tier (another 140 steps in the heat), and the view overlooking the city was fantastic. · *Day 6: Sousse & the Journey Home** We spent our final day wandering through the medina of Sousse to pick up a few souvenirs and strolling along the harbor before heading back to the airport. · *Handy Practical Tips:** · **Money:** You can exchange Euros for Tunisian Dinars (TND) locally. Just do it at the airport; the exchange rates are government-regulated and practically the same everywhere. Keep your receipt, as you are not allowed to take Dinars back out of the country. · **SIM Card:** Grab a prepaid SIM card from Ooredoo or Orange right when you land. For roughly 25 TND (around €7.50), you'll get 25 GB of data. It’s ideal for navigation. · **Plugs:** They use Type C and E power outlets here. My Dutch charger fit perfectly everywhere without an adapter, but bringing a power bank is essential since the heat drains your phone battery much faster. Tunisia was a delightful surprise. It gets intensely hot in the summer, but if you can handle the heat and have a passion for history and film, it’s a fantastic, surprisingly affordable destination.

Matt Mata (Matmata, Arabic)

Mattema, also the location of the movie "Star Wars", is the location of the alien disco scene in the "First Star Wars" film.
