Known as the “City of Mosaics,” Madaba feels completely different from the dramatic landscapes of Petra or the vastness of the desert. Its charm lies in the details — ancient mosaics, historic churches, stone buildings, and little streets filled with the warmth of everyday Jordanian life. Standing here and seeing these beautiful mosaics with my own eyes felt surprisingly special. St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Madaba, Jordan is home to the famous Madaba Map Mosaic, which is considered the oldest surviving original cartographic depiction of the Holy Land and especially Jerusalem. The mosaic is part of the church’s floor and dates back to the early Byzantine period. The Madaba Map Mosaic is a masterpiece of art and cartography, and it depicts an area from Lebanon in the north to the Nile Delta in the south, and from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Eastern Desert. Mt. Nebo is where Moses is supposed to be buried. This isn’t the largest site I’ve ever visited but I’d suggest that anyone curious about history add Mt. Nebo to their itineraries. #overratedspots Madaba is known as the “City of Mosaics,” so naturally I expected to be completely blown away. And yes — the mosaics are incredibly detailed. Some of them have survived for centuries, with tiny pieces forming animals, people, patterns and stories beneath your feet. Walking through the Burnt Palace and Martyrs Church area almost feels like discovering pieces of a giant ancient puzzle. But… would I say Madaba was one of the highlights of Jordan? Probably not. 😅 After Petra, Wadi Rum and the dramatic landscapes elsewhere in Jordan, Madaba felt much quieter and less memorable for me. Interesting? Definitely. Beautiful craftsmanship? Absolutely. But I probably wouldn’t travel here just for Madaba. If it’s already on your route between Amman, Mount Nebo or the Dead Sea, then it’s a lovely stop for a couple of hours. But as a destination on its own? A little overrated for me. 👀🇯🇴 Sometimes a place can be historically fascinating without becoming your favourite — and that’s exactly how Madaba felt to me.

We traveled to Jordan (Amman, Jerash, Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea) on an 8-day tour. Petra was the highlight of the trip. We had plenty of time to explore it leisurely: the first day was focused on the Siq, the Treasury, the Street of Facades, the Theater, and the Royal Tombs; the second day was for the Monastery, enjoying the sights without rushing and avoiding the midday heat. Wadi Rum was magical, with its red desert, serene silence, and dinner under the stars at the camp. In Amman, we loved the Citadel, the Roman Theater, and the Souq. On the way to Petra, we stopped at Jerash, Madaba, and Mount Nebo—each highlighted by excellent local guides providing historical context. We ended the trip floating in the Dead Sea, the perfect relaxation after so many active days. Our guide, Jafar, was exceptional—dedicated, knowledgeable, and attentive to ensuring we had the best experience. The agency was attentive and supportive from the very start to the end. The hotels were outstanding, with extremely friendly staff. What I appreciated the most was that everything was private, allowing us to go at our own pace, free from rigid schedules, which was essential as we were traveling with an elderly family member. Jordan is a spectacular destination, and with the right organization, it's accessible for travelers of all ages and abilities. Figure 9, the Jordan River Figures 10-16, the signage of Bethany Beyond the Jordan (Jesus' baptism site), is one of the iconic facilities for pilgrims to check in. It features English, Arabic, and Greek languages, quoting the scripture from the Gospel of John about Jesus' baptism in the Jordan River. The top is inlaid with the "Lamb of God" pattern (a Christian symbol) paired with a white dove (representing the Holy Spirit). The Jordan River section at Bethany Beyond the Jordan (Jesus' baptism site); this section has shallow water and many pebbles, matching the natural environment characteristics of early baptism rituals. It is one of the iconic places where Christians experience "simulated baptism" during pilgrimage. Finally, we walked through the alleys of the old town, admired local handicrafts, enjoyed the leisurely atmosphere, and had a traditional Jordanian meal. Madaba may be small, but its rich cultural heritage and unique art make it well worth a visit!
