You can explore it thoroughly in half a day, and it's well air-conditioned, making it perfect for a relaxed first day. · Yiren Ancient Town: Free, open all day, but I recommend visiting after 6 PM. With its white walls, blue tiles, Yi-style carvings, and a river flowing through, the lanterns light up beautifully at night. Around 7:30 PM, there's a bonfire with the Left-Foot Dance, where local women will pull you in to dance. The atmosphere is much better than during the day. · Zixi Mountain: About 30 minutes from the city, it's considered Chuxiong's 'city backyard'. You'll find ancient camellias, thousand-year-old vines, the red walls of Ziding Temple, and mountain streams. It's an easy hiking route, not too strenuous. In summer, the forest is much cooler than the city, and in autumn and winter, the colorful foliage makes for great photos. · Heijing Ancient Town: Admission is CNY 25. This thousand-year-old salt capital is located in Lufeng. It's much more restrained than many popular ancient towns, without too many hawkers or Yiwu silver ornaments. The bluestone slabs, Wujia Courtyard, ancient salt wells, and Dalong Temple are well-preserved. It's very pleasant to sit by the Longchuan River and relax for an afternoon. 🗓️ 3-day, 2-night itinerary (my version, can be done without a car) Day 1 | Arrival + cultural warm-up Arrive at Chuxiong Station in the morning → drop off luggage → Chuxiong Prefecture Museum (2.5 hours) → lunch: a bowl of cold chicken rice noodles/Chuxiong rice noodles → light hike at Zixi Mountain in the afternoon → evening: dinner with Yi flavors and bonfire at Yiren Ancient Town. Accommodation: Stay in Chuxiong city or near Yiren Ancient Town. Chain hotels range from CNY 132–305/night, more reliable than overpriced guesthouses in the ancient town. Return in the afternoon. For a more adventurous trip, you can swap Zixi Mountain for Yuanmou Wumao Earth Forest (admission approx. CNY 70). The light and shadows at sunrise/sunset look like an alien landscape, but it gets scorching hot at noon in summer, so remember to leave early. 🍜 For food, I highly recommend these: · Wild mushroom hotpot (best from June–October): Chicken broth + termitomyces/boletus mushrooms. Drink the soup first, then eat the mushrooms. In reputable old restaurants in the city, you can eat very well for CNY 60–100 per person. Don't fall for those "CNY 99 mushroom pot" deals in tourist areas. · Yi lamb hotpot / Tuotuo meat / tartary buckwheat cake with honey: Find any restaurant in the Yiren Ancient Town night market that's full of locals and go in. The lively atmosphere is more authentic than fancy restaurants. · Heijing salt-baked chicken: Baked with ancient well salt, the skin is firm and the meat is tender. You must try it in Heijing; the taste isn't quite the same back in the city. · Yuanmou cold chicken / cold noodles: If you go to the Earth Forest, have a bowl in Yuanmou County before returning. The dipping sauce is the soul of the dish. 💰 Per person budget (3 days, 2 nights, no car, two people sharing costs) · Transportation (Kunming ⇄ Chuxiong bullet train + city taxis + carpool to Heijing): Approx. Wear sunscreen even on cloudy days, especially at Zixi Mountain and the Earth Forest. · August is around the rainy season. The Earth Forest area often gets heavy afternoon downpours, and mountain roads can be slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. · More than half of the "intangible cultural heritage stores" selling silverware and Yi embroidery in Yiren Ancient Town are selling wholesale goods. If you want to buy small items, go to the department store in Chuxiong city.
