2026 Beaumaris Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in July)

Right next door to the Taylor Swift cafe (see my previous post) in Beaumaris is this beauty - Beaumaris Castle! 🏰 🏰 🏰 🏰 🏰 🏰 📍 Located on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales, this castle is often apparently named “the greatest castle never built” because it remains an unfinished piece of medieval military architecture. Because it is unfinished, it allows visitors to study the engineering intent and layers of defence that are harder to see on other completed sites. Visitors can also walk along the top of the walls and take in the breathtaking Welsh view all around - if you look closely you can spot the Menai Strait and the mountains of Snowdonia! View the different textures of stone used and contrasting masonry. There is a single gargoyle on the site, try and spot it! Take some time to look at the moat surrounding the castle - we saw a little egret, eels, and lots of little fish! 🪿🐟🏰 The symmetrical walls and architecture are breathtaking, and I really enjoyed looking in all the nooks and crannies, imagining what it may have looked like all those years ago. FUN FACTS: 🏰 Beaumaris translates to “beautiful marsh” 🏰 Initial work began on this castle in 1295!! 🏰 Haunted?? Visitors have reported strange happenings at the chapel tower - hearing the chanting of monks echoing against the stone walls! 🏰 Look out for “murder holes” which were used to protect the gate house. 🏰 Make sure you visit the gift shop and exhibition at the main entrance ♿️♿️♿️: the site has accessible toilets, paid parking close by. The outer grounds of the castle are generally flat and easy to navigate, inside the castle the ground can be uneven in places. There is access to walk along the top of the walls and look inside the castle building however these are often up narrow and winding stair cases so may not be easy for everyone to navigate. You do have to pay to get entry into the castle grounds, however it is free or discounted for people with disability ID. You heard me right!! This one’s for the Swifties! 🏰🌧️🐍🪩✨🎹🍁 On the main high street in Beaumaris, you will find a gift shop called “The Mock Turtle” - inside you will find a variety if gorgeous and colourful, funky statement gifts and home decor. Carry on to the back of the shop and here you will find Taylor Swift galore!!! They had allll kinds of Taylor Swift merchandise - pin badges, cups and mugs, clothing, jewellery, DIY bracelets making kits, patches, posters and art prints, soap, hair clips, door stops… you name it - they had it!! 🤣 Finally, enter through the little door at the back and here you will find the cutest Taylor Swift themed cafe named “August”. Serving delicious hot drinks, freshly baked treats, pastries and snacks, as well as cold drinks - it’s the perfect place to stop and rest whilst treating yourself to something tasty and listening to all the best Tay Tay songs.
