Deep in the mountains of Liuba, Hanzhong, Zhang Liang Temple sits among ancient trees and quiet mountain scenery, offering a glimpse into a very different side of Chinese history. The temple is associated with Zhang Liang, one of the celebrated strategists of the early Han dynasty. Known for his role in the founding of the dynasty, Zhang Liang later withdrew from public life, and his story became closely connected with the traditional ideal of stepping away from worldly affairs. That sense of retreat is reflected in the atmosphere of the temple itself. Old halls sit quietly beneath the trees, stone inscriptions preserve traces of the past, and winding paths lead through a landscape where architecture and nature seem naturally intertwined. Away from the grandeur of major imperial sites, the temple feels intimate and contemplative. The surrounding mountains provide a peaceful backdrop, while the ancient trees add a sense of continuity between the present and the distant past. Here, history does not feel loud. It feels quiet, shaded and deeply rooted in the mountains. 📍 Zhang Liang Temple, Liuba County, Hanzhong, Shaanxi, China 🇨🇳 📸 Photography Tip: Use the tree canopy, temple gates and winding paths to create natural frames. Soft, diffused light works particularly well for capturing the tranquil atmosphere. ✨ Signature Feeling: A secluded temple in the mountains, where ancient history and quiet nature meet. Perhaps the most enduring legacy is not always found in what one achieves, but in knowing when to step away.

Cross suspension bridges through the primeval forest, with sunlight filtering through the trees, enhancing the enchanting ambiance. Ascend Zibai Mountain to witness the majestic alpine grasslands, rolling hills, and the grandeur of the Qinling Mountains. Then, visit Shizigou Pasture, where cattle and sheep roam freely on pristine highland meadows, surrounded by colorful forests, offering a tranquil and healing autumn retreat. Delve deeper into the Bashan Mountains to explore Liping Forest Park. With its deep gorges, cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear pools, and mountains blanketed in red leaves along the river valleys, every step reveals a picturesque scene, making it a photographer’s paradise. Following this, we head to Guangwu Mountain for a full day at Micang Mountain National Forest Park. From Xianglu Mountain to Heixiong Valley and Daxiaolangou, the vibrant tapestry of red, orange, yellow, and green trees creates a stunning sea of autumn colors, immersing you in the beauty of nature. The highlight of the trip is Shibayue Pool, renowned as "a place more beautiful than Jiuzhaigou, with the most stunning red leaves in the world." Crescent-shaped pools and waterfalls are scattered throughout the valley, with red leaves drifting on the turquoise waters and colorful forests reflected in the pools. Every frame is a masterpiece of natural beauty, and ample time is provided for photography and creative expression. This exclusive small group tour is limited to 7 participants, ensuring a premium experience. The itinerary is purely for leisure, with no shopping stops or rushed sightseeing. Tucked away among the mountains of Liuba County in Hanzhong, Zhang Liang Temple is a place where history seems to retreat into the landscape. The temple is traditionally associated with Zhang Liang, the strategist of the early Han dynasty who later withdrew from political life and became a figure surrounded by stories of wisdom, restraint and retreat. Set among wooded mountains, the temple complex has a distinctly tranquil character. Ancient trees, traditional halls, stone inscriptions and quiet courtyards create a sense of distance from the world beyond its gates. The setting is particularly fitting for Zhang Liang’s story. Rather than celebrating power and conquest, the site evokes the idea of knowing when to step away—a theme that has resonated through Chinese history for centuries. Walking through the temple grounds, the mountains become as important as the architecture. Greenery frames the old buildings, filtered sunlight falls across the paths, and the surrounding landscape gives the site an almost secluded atmosphere. 📍 Zhang Liang Temple, Liuba County, Hanzhong, Shaanxi, China 🇨🇳 📸 Photography Tip: Use the ancient trees and temple corridors to frame the traditional architecture. Look for layered compositions where foliage, stone and wooden structures overlap naturally. ✨ Signature Feeling: Ancient halls beneath mountain trees, where history feels quieter and wisdom seems to linger in the landscape. Some historical places tell stories of ambition; Zhang Liang Temple quietly tells another story—the wisdom of knowing when to leave the stage.

If you long for the grasslands and forests of Altay in Xinjiang but are discouraged by the distance, Liuba deep in the Qinling Mountains might be the reachable place of poetry and dreams. Starting from Xi’an by car, passing Baoji, you can reach this small city surrounded by forests in southern Shaanxi in about 3 hours. The average summer temperature here is only 22℃, making it an ideal summer retreat. Two days and one night are enough to immerse yourself in this “Shaanxi version of Altay” landscape. 🗺️ itinerary overview · Day 1: Xi’an departure → Lover’s Valley → Shizigou ranch → Liuba old street (stay in Liuba) · Day 2: Zibai Mountain → return trip (or add Zhang Liang Temple / Gaojiang Road) 🌲 Day 1: explore the forest and ranch Depart from Xi’an in the morning and navigate to “Liuba Lover’s Valley.” This 500-acre larch forest is quiet and fresh, with wooden suspension bridges crossing streams. Walking here feels like being in a Nordic forest. The scenic area is free. It is recommended to spend 30 minutes to 1 hour. In the afternoon, drive to Shizigou ranch—called “Shaanxi Altay” by many visitors. It was once a place where Zhuge Liang stationed troops and raised horses. Surrounded by mountains, the meadows are like carpets, with cattle and sheep grazing leisurely. Deep in the ranch, the “Milk Lake” has a milky green color due to minerals at the bottom, looking especially beautiful under the sun. You can try horseback riding (about 50 yuan/hour) or bring your own tent for camping. The ranch is free to enter. It is recommended to spend 2–3 hours. Return to Liuba old street at dusk. This old street, built during the Qing Jiaqing period, is about 900 meters long. The bluestone pavement and red lanterns create a lively atmosphere. For dinner, try southern Shaanxi specialties like wooden bucket fish, cured meat, hot noodle sheets, and walnut bread. Overnight options include county hotels or mountain homestays (such as near the old street or around Shizigou). Mountain view rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the green hills are recommended. 🏔️ Day 2: climb Zibai Mountain and enjoy the view In the morning, head to Zibai Mountain National Forest Park (admission 35 yuan + shuttle bus 20 yuan). Take the cable car up the mountain (round-trip 80 yuan). The summit has over 20,000 acres of subalpine meadows and rare “Guotan” landforms. When the sea of clouds rolls in, it feels like walking in the sky. It is recommended to spend about 3 hours here. If time allows, visit Zhang Liang Temple (admission 50 yuan) on the way down. It is the largest and best-preserved temple dedicated to Zhang Liang in the country. Or drive along Gaojiang Road—a scenic rural road lined with dawn redwoods, especially stunning in autumn. Drive back in the afternoon. 💡 practical tips · Road conditions: Entire route is highway + national road. Suitable for sedans, but the last section to Shizigou ranch is gravel road, so drive slowly. · Clothing: Large temperature difference between morning and evening. Even in summer, bring a jacket. · Mosquito protection: There are many mosquitoes in the ranch. Remember to bring insect repellent spray. · Recommended travel season: June–August for green meadows, October–November for colorful autumn foliage.

The whole area is full of autumn colors, the scene of leaves turning from green to red is intoxicating. Two days and one night, escape from urban life, from eating, drinking, playing and other aspects. First is the choice of accommodation: There are many homestays in the mountains of Liuba, these homestays are located in the beautiful natural environment of the paradise, away from the city noise. The temperature difference between morning and evening is large, so clothing should be noted for warmth. This time we chose a homestay near the Lion's Gully Ranch, which is actually within walking distance, if you drive it's a 2-minute drive, and it's only an 8-minute drive from Lover's Valley, so for a short trip of two days and one night, the distance is particularly suitable, saving time. Next is the food recommendation. The homestay has its own small kitchen, the ingredients are fresh, especially the local eggs and corn coarse grains in the mountains, which are particularly fragrant, and you can also taste the local snacks and traditional dishes. Play style: During your trip in Liuba, you can also go to the Lion's Gully Ranch and Lover's Valley can be played in one day. Lion's Gully Ranch is a free attraction, where you can enjoy the natural ranch, walk with cattle and sheep, and it's a good place to sunbathe. (Time 1~1.5 hours) Lover's Valley is a romantic place, you can stroll in the scenic area with your partner, feel the strong autumn atmosphere. (Time 30 minutes~1 hour)

On clear days you may encounter a sea of clouds, and the mountain breeze will blow away your fatigue ❤️Longtou Mountain | elevator access to cloud-top colorful forests A giant cloud ladder makes it easy to reach the summit, a good option for those who prefer to take it easy. The hills are covered in colorful forests, with a cliffside walkway threading through them, and the mist creates a fairyland atmosphere 🧳Travel tips ✨Day and night temperatures vary greatly. Bring a warm jacket, and light-colored clothing looks better in photos ✨There are still mosquitoes at the pastures, so pack insect repellent and bring snacks and drinking water ✨Both Zibai Mountain and Longtou Mountain cable cars have last-run times, so don't go up too late ✨There are many tunnels along the way and it's easy to get carsick, so bring motion sickness medicine in advance 💊

You don't need to visit famous mountains and the sea at the same time to enjoy the autumn colors. Day 1: Head to Liuba at the southern foot of the Qinling Mountains. Follow Gaojiang Road to see metasequoia, ginkgo trees, and ancient villages. Skip climbing Zibaishan Mountain and rushing through Zhangliang Temple. Day 2: Arrive in Linhai, Taizhou. Eat glutinous rice snacks on Ziyang Street, walk the outer circle of the Jiangnan Great Wall, and take a leisurely stroll around East Lake and Jinshan Mountain. In the afternoon, head to Jiaojiang/Taizhou Bay for a sea breeze. Both routes are easy and suitable for seniors and children. 💡 Low-effort logic: For Gaojiang Road, just drive and stop at designated parking bays. Focus on the ancient ginkgo trees at Yuhuang Temple, the metasequoia section, and quick photos at Chaiguanling. Do not hike the full 39 km or climb Taiziling. In Linhai, only visit Ziyang Street, East Lake, Jinshan Mountain, Longxing Temple, and Xingshan Gate. You can view the Great Wall from a distance without climbing the whole wall. For the sea breeze, only go to the Jiaojiang coast/Taizhou Bay and don't detour to distant islands. 🍂 Day 1 Liuba Gaojiang Road: A golden country road without the hike Location and cost Gaojiang Road is located in the area between Yuhuangmiao Town and Jiangkou/Jiangxiying in Liuba, Hanzhong. It is known as "China's most beautiful country road." It is about 39 km long, free to access, and open all day. There are ancient ginkgo trees in Shiyaoba Village, Yuhuangmiao (common sources claim they are thousands of years old, but please refer to on-site signage for specifics). Viewing is free without entering the garden. If Zhangliang Temple is on your way, you can enter. Admission prices vary by channel (CNY 50/60), so check the booking page for the day. If you are only there for the ginkgo trees, you can skip it. Zibaishan Mountain and Shigou are separate and not included in this guide. Half-day light self-drive · From Liuba County/Hanzhong, take G316 or the Jiangxiying expressway exit into the mountains. First, go to Shiyaoba in Yuhuangmiao Town to see the ancient ginkgo trees. Look up to photograph the golden canopy or shoot the fallen leaves on the ground. The light is best between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. · Drive slowly along Gaojiang Road. Stop at designated parking bays for the metasequoia and ginkgo sections. Do not block curves or overtake slow vehicles. The road is about 5 meters wide with many curves. Sedans can drive it, but avoid off-road paths. · Feel free to take photos of the countryside, streams, and farmhouses in the middle section. If you want a short walk, choose a flat 1–2 km stretch to walk back and forth, rather than hiking the full 39 km. · If you have time, go to the Chaiguanling stone tablet/memorial pavilion to view the mountains of the watershed from a distance. Do not climb wild slopes or chase the sea of clouds. Return to Liuba Old Street for dinner. Best time: Late October–mid-November is the most golden period. Metasequoia turns yellow in mid-to-late October, and ginkgo trees turn slightly later. Before you leave, ask your guesthouse or check the "Liuba Release/Hanzhong Culture and Tourism" autumn foliage reports. Don't go before October 20 or after November 20. Transportation: Fly to Hanzhong Chenggu Airport and rent a car, or take a high-speed train to Hanzhong Station and transfer to a shuttle bus or chartered car to Liuba. Attractions in Liuba are scattered, so it is difficult to get around without a car. Signals are weak in the mountains, so download offline maps in advance. Temperatures in autumn and winter are near 0–8°C in the morning and evening, and in the low teens during the day. Bring a light down jacket. 🏮 Day 2 Linhai Ziyang Street: Old city street + coastal breeze Location and tickets Ziyang Street is in the ancient city of Linhai, the core of the Taizhou Prefecture Cultural Tourism Zone. The street is free and open all day. The Jiangnan Great Wall/Prefecture Wall has a separate ticket of about CNY 55 (about CNY 30 for students/seniors). If you only want to stroll the street, you don't need to buy it. You can walk around East Lake and the exterior of Longxing Temple on Jinshan Mountain for free. Small venues like the Poetry Culture Experience Hall require separate tickets, which are optional based on your interest. 3-hour slow route in the old city · Enter from Xingshan Gate → Ziyang Street south section: Take photos of the Thousand Buddha Well, the Ziyang Hometown screen wall, the old pharmacy, and the workshop walls. · In the middle section, eat seaweed cakes (freshly baked with crispy skin), egg white sheep tail, wheat shrimp, zaogeng (thick soup), and black rice mochi. Eat small amounts frequently so you don't get too full. · Turn to East Lake Park to see the Jiangnan garden waterscape. It's complete even without taking a boat. Take photos outside the Jinshan Twin Towers and the red walls of Longxing Temple without entering the halls or waiting in line. · If you have energy, buy a Great Wall ticket and go up from Lansheng Gate to see the Lingjiang River. If you are with seniors, just walk to the exterior of Beishan Road to view it from a distance, and don't climb the full 198-step + long wall route. Return to Ziyang Street in the evening. It is most photogenic after the red lanterns light up. Both the daylight shadows from 4:00 PM–6:00 PM and the night view after 7:00 PM are worth it. How to add a sea breeze Ziyang Street is not by the sea. If you want a "sea breeze," set aside the afternoon: Take a taxi/bus from Linhai to Jiaojiang. Walk along the Jiaojiang coast or Taizhou Bay to view the river, sea, ports, and mudflats (check daily navigation and scenic spot announcements for specific open sections). You can enjoy the breeze without taking a boat. If you have more time, go to Songmen/Shitang in Wenling, but that exceeds the "two-day slow city" plan. It is more economical to take a high-speed train from Linhai Station to Jiaojiang/Taizhou Bay. If driving, take the Shenhai/Coastal Expressway, which takes about 40–70 minutes. Don't schedule your return trip too tightly. Transportation and accommodation A taxi from Linhai Station to Xingshan Gate/Jinshan East Road on Ziyang Street costs about CNY 15–25 and takes 20 minutes. Bus 201/202/302 goes to the area around the prefecture city. Staying in a Ziyang Street guesthouse allows you to open your window to the old street. Economy options are CNY 192–272, comfortable options are CNY 265–408, and light luxury options are higher. For cheaper options, stay at a chain hotel in downtown Linhai. If you want to enjoy the sea breeze, stay along the coast in Jiaojiang. Splitting the two nights is more relaxed. 📌 Tips 1. Do not play Gaojiang Road as a "full hike." Driving and stopping along the 39 km route is the most comfortable way. Do not park on curves, at village entrances, or on narrow bridges. Only use designated parking bays on your navigation. 2. The yellowing period of ancient ginkgo trees is affected by temperature. They may be half-yellow before October 20 and drop leaves by late November. Do not treat "golden ground" as an absolute expectation. Metasequoia turns yellow a few days earlier than ginkgo. 3. This guide only covers Gaojiang Road + Old Street and does not include the Zibaishan cable car, Taiziling sea of clouds, or a full day at Shigou. If you want to add Zhangliang Temple, set aside a separate half-day so you don't turn your autumn self-drive into a hiking tour. 4. Linhai Ziyang Street is free, but the Jiangnan Great Wall charges a separate fee. If you are only there to stroll and eat, don't buy a Great Wall ticket. If you are with children or seniors, viewing the wall from a distance is enough. The Xingshan Gate light show is subject to daily announcements; do not assume it happens every night. 5. The stone roads on Ziyang Street are slippery, so wear flat shoes. Eat seaweed cakes while they are freshly baked and hot; they won't be crispy if left overnight. Wheat shrimp is not shrimp, and zaogeng is a salty rice paste. Ask clearly when ordering. 6. "Sea breeze" in Linhai does not mean you see the sea as soon as you leave Ziyang Street. To strictly see the East China Sea, go to Jiaojiang/Taizhou Bay/Wenling. This guide only suggests a light afternoon trip and does not recommend squeezing Shitang Fishing Port or island ferries into two days. Gaojiang Road paves the Qinling Mountains with a golden corridor of metasequoia and ancient ginkgo trees, while Ziyang Street captures the prefecture city, glutinous rice snacks, and the shadow of the Great Wall on a single stone-paved road, topped off with a stretch of Jiaojiang sea breeze—one mountain, one city. No climbing, no crowds. Two days in autumn is much more comfortable than rushing through a big loop. 🌰🏮🌊

I've just returned from visiting Huangbaiyuan during peak season. While the scenery there is beautiful, the wooden boardwalk at Dajiangou was packed with tourists, the streamside was crowded with people taking photos, and the street was lined with one farmhouse restaurant after another. It became difficult to find a quiet moment to truly immerse myself in the autumn colors of the Qinling Mountains. I stumbled upon a place deep in the Qinling Mountains that feels like a "Little Altay" of Shaanxi (Liuba). There's no admission fee, no reservation required, and you can pull over to enjoy the view whenever you like along the way. The scenery in Liuba is truly stunning—so beautiful that I was reluctant to leave. I was afraid that if I stayed any longer, I'd be so captivated by the autumn views that I wouldn't want to go home. As the car drove into this mountain wilderness, a sea of gold greeted us. Vast stretches of ancient ginkgo trees grow along the road, colorful forests blanket the mountains, and old houses with white walls and dark tiles are nestled among the lush trees. In the early morning, the rising mist makes it look like a fresh ink wash painting. There are no noisy hawkers here; the only sounds are the flowing river and the rustling of the wind through the leaves. Walking on the bluestone paths polished smooth by time, you can explore all day long. 📍Shizigou Pasture: Gentle alpine meadows where cattle and sheep graze leisurely. Surrounded by autumn forests, with wooden cabins and meadows, it feels just like Northern Xinjiang. 📍Gaojiang Road: One of China's most beautiful rural roads, featuring a century-old ginkgo corridor and colorful forests along the way—perfect for pulling over to take photos at any time. 📍Zibaishan Mountain: You can take a cable car up, so there's no need to hike, and you can overlook the mountains covered in red leaves from the summit. 📍Liuba Old Street: An ancient street with bluestone paths, authentic Southern Shaanxi vibes, and genuine local farmhouse cuisine. The temperature difference between day and night is significant in the mountains in autumn, so be sure to pack a warm jacket. The mountain roads have many curves, so drive slowly. Try to avoid the first 3 days of the National Day holiday; travel off-peak to enjoy the entire forest all to yourself. travel road trip

Just returned from the Qinling Mountains! I honestly don't recommend coming in September–October. The mountains are covered in layers of colorful forests, and you get sea of clouds, streams, and ancient villages all at once. It's uncrowded, the scenery is stunning, and once you're here, you won't want to leave! The Qinling Mountains in autumn come with their own filter; every photo looks like an oil painting. It's the top choice for a short autumn getaway! 💰 Total budget for 1 person for 3 days and 2 nights: CNY 680 (excluding round-trip transportation) 2 nights' accommodation: CNY 260 | Meals: CNY 240 | Local transportation: CNY 90 | Attraction tickets: CNY 90 🚗 Transportation tips Departing from Xi'an, driving is the most convenient. You can take the highway directly to Zhashui/Liuba; the one-way highway toll is CNY 45. Public transportation: Take the subway to Weiqu South Station, then transfer to a bus to enter the mountains; the bus fare is CNY 5. Attractions in the mountains are scattered, so carpooling is a more worry-free option at CNY 60 per person. 🏨 Accommodation areas ▪ Yingpan Town, Zhashui: CNY 110–140/night Close to Niubeiliang and Zhongnan Mountain Village, with many homestay options and convenient dining, suitable for short trips. ▪ Liuba County: CNY 120–150/night The county has complete facilities with many supermarkets and restaurants, and it's close to Gaojiang Road and Shizigou Pasture. 🍜 Must-try food Potato Ciba (sticky potato cake): CNY 15 🥔, sour, spicy, and chewy, a local specialty snack; Stewed chicken with mushrooms: CNY 68 🍲, full of wild, fresh flavors; Vegetable tofu: CNY 12 🥣, light and refreshing, a great palate cleanser; Acorn jelly: CNY 10, slippery and smooth, a must-try mountain snack. 📸 Must-visit attractions Niubeiliang Forest Park: CNY 70 🏞️, primitive forest with stunning autumn foliage; Zhongnan Mountain Village: Free 🏡, ancient stone village with babbling streams, perfect for a leisurely walk; Gaojiang Road: Free 🍁, the most beautiful rural road, covered in golden fallen leaves; Shizigou Pasture: Free 🐑, alpine meadow with grazing cattle and sheep, full of atmosphere. ❌ Things to avoid 1. The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains is huge. Don't just bring a thin jacket; it's very chilly in high-altitude areas. 2. The mountain roads have many curves and can be slippery when it rains. If driving, slow down and do not park randomly on the roadside. 3. Do not enter undeveloped wild valleys on your own; it's easy to get lost. Follow forest area regulations. 4. Prices at scenic spot kiosks are on the higher side; prepare drinking water and snacks before entering the mountains. 💡 Travel tips September–October is the golden period for autumn foliage in the Qinling Mountains. Try to avoid the peak crowds during the National Day holiday. Prepare windbreakers and non-slip shoes for entering the mountains. Download offline maps on your phone in advance, as some sections have no signal. Protect the forest, do not pick wild fruits, and do not feed wild animals. ✨ Final thoughts Who gets it! The Qinling Mountains in autumn are truly healing ✨! No crowds, just colorful forests as far as the eye can see, and a mountain breeze so comfortable you won't want to leave. You don't need to travel far to immerse yourself in nature. You must come to the Qinling Mountains in September–October to see an autumn fairy tale; you definitely won't regret it!

. 📸 Let's talk straight about getting great photos 📸 If you're visiting Hanzhong in October, don't just shoot by the Han River. The red walls at Xinghan Resort paired with hanfu and the reflections at Hanyuan Lake will make you feel like you're on a period drama set 🏯. At Shimen Plank Road, the cliffside by the water plus autumn colors look best in the soft morning light—shooting in the afternoon backlight will leave you with a dark face 😅. At Liping, spots like Hongchen Gorge, Maple Forest Waterfall, and Little Hukou offer red leaves with flowing water that can produce wallpaper-worthy shots even on a phone, but there are lots of stairs, so wearing kitten heels will really make you suffer. Longtou Mountain has a cable car and sky ladder—see the colorful forests in autumn and maybe catch a sea of clouds if you're lucky. The wind at the summit is strong; when my skirt hem and wig flew up together, I completely fell apart 💨. The clouds and mist at the top of Zibai Mountain are also stunning. If you want that ethereal look, don't wait until evening—once the light dims, it's game over. 🗺 Route planned for the lazy traveler 🗺 Day 1: Take it easy in the city. Visit the ancient Hantai to see the Shimen cliff inscriptions and climb Wangjiang Tower. Head to Xinghan Resort in the afternoon, and book "Tianhan Legend" on Trip.com for the evening to avoid waiting in long lines on site 🌃. Day 2: Spend half a day at Shimen Plank Road, then loop through Baohe, the reservoir, and the old street before heading back to town for some noodles. If you're feeling energetic, take the direct bus to Liping instead. Buy the combo ticket for Liping admission plus sightseeing car on Trip.com to save yourself the hassle—don't try to find tickets at the last minute during peak leaf season. Day 3: Take the Mianxian route—Wuhou Shrine, Wuhou Tomb, and Zhuge Ancient Town. If you want to see the "Chu Shi Biao" show, book ahead, or you'll just be listening to the sounds from outside the gate. Day 4: Pick one of two options—Longtou Mountain for colorful forests and sea of clouds, or Liuba's Zibai Mountain and Liuhou Town to just chill. Qingmuchuan is farther out; if you have fewer than five days, don't force it in—the back-and-forth travel will wear you out. 🍜 Don't get fancy with food—follow the locals' playbook 🍜 For hot noodles (re mianpi), always order the hot version, not the cold one. The rice batter is steamed to a soft, chewy texture, mixed with chili oil, garlic water, and vinegar, and paired with tofu curd to cut the richness. Add some peanut congee, and this breakfast trio will wake you right up 🔆. Vegetable tofu (cai doufu) is tangy and savory, not bitter. If you're not used to the first bite, don't write it off—a couple more spoonfuls and it'll grow on you. Buy walnut cakes fresh from the oven. The Ningqiang-style ones are so flaky they crumble, but if you go in the afternoon, they're usually sold out. I learned that the hard way last time. Bangbang noodles are thin, wide, and sour-spicy—more filling than bubble tea at lunch. Jiangshui noodles have a fermented, tangy broth that's great for the appetite, even in October. Ningqiang spicy chicken is shredded and tossed in chili oil—perfect with rice or drinks. Xixiang beef jerky—grab the sealed packs as a snack; you can munch on them in the car without getting your hands dirty. Qianjin Road night market is worth a stroll, but don't buy from every stall. Your stomach isn't a warehouse—overeating to the point of misery isn't worth it. ⚠ All the pitfalls to avoid ⚠ In October, a hoodie and light jacket are enough for daytime in Hanzhong, but at Longtou Mountain, Liping, and Zibai Mountain, temperatures can drop to the teens in the morning and evening. Wearing just a dress will make you suffer 🧥. On rainy days, the plank roads get slippery. Don't try to strike a pose at Shimen or Liping—one fall and your makeup is ruined. Food at Liping is pricey, so bring water and some snacks for the day trip on the direct bus. Don't believe the "food inside is cheap and easy" nonsense 😂. At Xinghan Resort, park admission and the show are sold separately. If you're just there for photos and not the performance, don't be a sucker and buy the package. If you're on a budget, you can skip "Chu Shi Biao"—wandering the ancient cypresses and exhibits at Wuhou Shrine on your own is more cost-effective. When booking on Trip.com, check whether the ticket includes the cable car or sightseeing car. At Longtou Mountain, skipping the cable car and relying on your legs is just foolish—you'll be exhausted before you even get to the summit for photos. At Qingmuchuan and Zhuge Ancient Town, don't just stick to the main street. Head deeper in to find the old courtyards and Huilongchang for the real local vibe. Don't order the "signature cold noodles" at a scenic area food court—that doesn't count as having Hanzhong noodles. Don't buy walnut cakes in the afternoon; you'll likely only find gift boxes left. Don't overpack your itinerary. Hanzhong is for slow eating and slow shooting. Rushing through four counties in a day will only leave you exhausted and with no good photos to show for it. 🚗 A quick note on transport 🚗 From Hanzhong Station, you can take a taxi or direct bus to most scenic areas. For Liping, Longtou Mountain, and Qingmuchuan, I recommend checking Trip.com for direct buses or private car hire. Trying to navigate rural shuttle buses on your own will drive you crazy. Staying in Hantai district in the city is the most convenient—you can stroll along the river at night and won't have to wake up at the crack of dawn to catch a ride the next day 🌙

Who says traveling with kids has to be exhausting? I used to believe that too. Until last weekend when I took my kid to Lover's Valley in Liuba, Hanzhong—the trees were green, the stream was clear, and the breeze smelled like pine. My kid ran in like a little beast let out of a cage, and I sat on a rock by the stream, drank some water, and actually had time to zone out 😌 Honestly, the three things I fear most when traveling with kids: walking like it's a military drill, waiting in line like it's a workday, and visiting spots the kid hates and throws a tantrum over. But Lover's Valley is simple: the kids play by themselves in the stream and woods, and the adults catch their breath in the shade. 📍What's this place actually like Liuba is north of Hanzhong, at the southern foot of the Qinling Mountains. Lover's Valley is tucked away in a mountain gully near Liuhou Town. It's not one of those artificial "influencer" parks; it's real mountains, real water, and a real forest. In the morning, mist floats over the trees, sunlight leaks through the leaves, and the ground is covered in dappled light. A stream runs through the valley; it's not deep—in summer, it just covers your ankles, and it's nice and cool. The first thing my kid said was, "Mom, this is like Peppa Pig jumping in muddy puddles!" 🐷💦 You don't need to explain facts or recite tour guide scripts; the kids just squat down to watch tadpoles, chase butterflies, pick up rocks, and build dams. 🚗How to get there without the hassle Driving from Xi'an is easiest: take the Ring Expressway → Jingkun Expressway → Liuba Exit. The whole trip takes about 3.5–4 hours. Don't rush to leave at 8 AM; family trips aren't military training. Leave at 9:30 AM, stop at a service area once, let the kid have a corn sausage, grab a bowl of hot mianpi in Liuba county, then drive 20 minutes into the mountains. You'll arrive at the Lover's Valley parking lot after 10 AM. Parking is free, which is more generous than many other scenic spots. Families without a car can take the high-speed train to Hanzhong Station, then carpool/take a bus to Liuba county (about 1.5 hours), and then take a taxi to Lover's Valley (20 minutes). Don't make too many transfers; one transfer is enough to wear any mom out. 🎫How much does it cost Lover's Valley itself is free! Free! Free! (Important things said three times) Parking is free, and admission is free. The only things you'll spend money on are gas/transport, lunch, and snacks. Eat at a farmhouse restaurant in nearby Liuhou Town—cured meat with bamboo shoots, stewed chicken with mushrooms, stir-fried wild vegetables—it costs about 40–60 yuan per person. The kid can have rice with tomato and scrambled eggs, and the adults can have a good meal too. If you want to stay an extra day, stay in Liuba county. Homestays are 150–300 yuan a night. Pick one that "has parking + a yard to dry shoes and socks"—it's a hundred times more useful than an Instagram-style place 🏠 🧒What do the kids actually do (Here's the important part) ① Wading in the stream: Bring sandals! Bring a change of pants! Don't wear white sneakers or Crocs (they wash away easily). I put water shoes on my kid, and they were fine all afternoon 🩴 ② Building stone dams: There are lots of rocks in the stream. The kid moved rocks to build little dams and played for an hour without leaving—it's more addictive than LEGO ③ Treasure hunting in the woods: Pinecones, leaves, twigs. The kid filled a pocket and told me, "I bought this at the forest supermarket" 🌰 ④ Chasing butterflies and dragonflies: There are lots of bugs in the valley (the good kind). Butterflies, dragonflies, and damselflies fly around. The kid chased them with a net, and it was a full workout ⑤ Lawn picnic: Bring a picnic mat, fruit, bread, and yogurt. Find a flat patch of grass, spread it out, and the kid will run laps nearby while eating ☕How can adults relax Don't spend the whole time filming, feeding, and wiping sweat. Find a big rock by the stream or a clearing in the woods and just sit. Drink water, scroll on your phone, and watch the kid run around within sight. That's called "playing with them," not "carrying them." I even thought that day: So, being a mom can also mean not talking, just sitting, and that's pretty nice too. 🍱What to eat without hitting a dud There are many farmhouse restaurants in Liuba county and Liuhou Town. Head toward the town center and don't eat right at the entrance of the scenic spot: Must-orders: Cured meat with bamboo shoots (so good you'll lick the plate), chicken soup (fresh), potato ciba (kids love it) If you have a baby, bring your own porridge/fruit puree If you have elementary schoolers, bring bananas, cherry tomatoes, bottled water, and ham sausages—peace on earth 🍌 Bring a thermos with hot water; have a sip to warm your stomach after playing by the stream ⚠️Pitfalls (to help you avoid them) Don't enter the valley during the scorching hours of 12 PM–2 PM; it's hot and sunny. Choose to go before 10 AM or after 3 PM The stream water is cold; don't let the kid play for more than 40 minutes, or they might catch a cold Bring mosquito repellent! There are quite a few bugs in the woods, especially in the evening Don't wear flip-flops on the dirt path; there's a dirt path from the parking lot to the valley entrance that gets muddy when it rains Bring a trash bag, take your trash with you after the picnic, and set a good example for the kids ♻️ 🎒Packing list (copy this) 2 sets of spare clothes, water shoes/sandals, sun hat, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, Band-Aids, wet wipes, trash bag, picnic mat, water gun (don't fill with hot water), snacks, power bank, sunglasses for adults 😎 💬A few sincere words from me Taking kids to see the world isn't about how many attractions you visit. It's about when they squat by the stream for ten minutes watching a tadpole wiggle its tail, and then come back and tell you, "Mom, its tail is moving, it's like it's waving at me." At that moment, I knew this trip was worth it. No need for faraway places, expensive tickets, or checking off every spot on the map. A stream, a forest, a breeze—and the kid has grown up a little bit 🌿 👇Let's chat in the comments: What's the most "effortless and photogenic" place you've taken your kids? Anywhere in Hebei/Shaanxi/Sichuan is fine. I'll collect everyone's comments and write the next post: "A Nationwide List of 'Mom-Friendly' Enchanted Forests" 📒 If you're starting from Baoding, let me know, and I'll test those first!

As a travel blogger who has seen countless autumn scenes, I declare that the autumn at Hanzhong Tianhan Wetland Park is definitely an underrated treasure destination! 🍂 📍 Why here? While everyone across the country is chasing red leaves, this reed marsh by the Han River has quietly become a scene straight out of the "Classic of Poetry"—"The reeds are lush and green, the white dew turns to frost." Fluffy, white reed flowers stretch out in a continuous expanse. When the river breeze blows, they ripple like waves. With the mighty Han River as a backdrop and distant mountains and blue sky as a frame, every snapshot looks like a cinematic scene with a traditional vibe. The best part—admission is free! 🚫💰 📅 Best time to visit Mid-September to late October. Mid-to-late September through mid-to-late October is the peak blooming period for the reed flowers. Viewing is best on sunny autumn days. 📍 Top photo spots South bank of Longgang Bridge (Bridge No. 4) This is the best spot for photos! Large, continuous reed marshes with wooden boardwalks winding through the sea of reeds. You can shoot upwards to frame the reeds with the blue sky, or downwards to capture the reeds against the Han River surface. Around the "Source of Water" sculpture on the north bank of the Han River The reeds, the Han River, and the rainbow bridge complement each other, perfect for photos combining natural scenery and human elements. Waterside wooden boardwalks Walking through the reeds, you can easily take forest-style or traditional-style photos. ⏰ Best time for photos Early morning 7:00–9:00 AM The light is soft, the reed flowers are covered in dew, and the atmosphere is cool and poetic. Plus, it's less crowded. Evening 4:30–6:30 PM The golden hour of sunset. The sunset glow spills onto the reeds, and the reed flowers look translucent and light against the backlight, making for perfect photos. ⚠️ Avoid the harsh midday light; overhead lighting makes for bad photos. 🚗 How to get there? Driving: Navigate to "Tianhan Wetland Park, South Bank of Longgang Bridge." There are parking lots around the park, making parking convenient. Bus: Take bus 106, 502, or 12 to "Longgang Bridge South Station" and walk to the destination; or take bus 2, 102, or 106 to "Wuyue Plaza" and walk across the bridge. Cycling: Ride a shared bike from the city center along the Tianhan Street riverside greenway. Enjoy the river views and arrive with ease. 👗 Outfit tips Light colors and Morandi colors look best in photos. Traditional Hanfu is a perfect match—reeds + Hanfu = an unbeatable combination. Props you can bring include flower crowns, ribbons, and balloons. For poses, try: standing in the middle of the reeds with eyes closed and head tilted back, using reeds to cover part of your face to make it look smaller, or sitting on the grass with the reeds as a background. 💡 Practical tips ✅ It's windy by the river, so bring a light jacket and mosquito repellent. ✅ Be a responsible visitor; do not trample or pick the reeds. ✅ Stay away from the water's edge for safety. 🗺️ Nearby attractions Don't rush off after taking photos of the reeds. Climb Tianhan Tower for a panoramic view of the entire wetland and the Han River. The Lianshui River Covered Bridge is full of traditional charm. Stroll and snack along Tianhan Street to experience the local vibe of Hanzhong. If you have extra time, the red leaf season in Liuba is happening at the same time. The red leaf feast in the secret realm of the Qinling Mountains is definitely worth a special trip. 🍁 Hanzhong is a city that doesn't compete or rush; it's quiet and peaceful, yet it hides the gentlest look of autumn along the Han River. While the reed flowers are in full bloom and the autumn sun is just right, go and keep your appointment with the reeds, where "the one I love is by the water."

For your National Day autumn road trip, don't just look at Guangwu Mountain. Deep in the Qinling Mountains lies a 300 km "sky road" of colorful forests. Starting from Taibai County, passing through Yang County and Liuba, the route connects red leaves, seas of clouds, and ancient villages. The mountain roads are mostly gentle, making it easy for seniors and children to travel at a leisurely pace. 1. 🚗 Taibai County The starting point of the entire route, a small county town at an altitude of 1,500 meters. Autumn just arrives here after the National Day holiday, and it's comfortably cool in the mornings and evenings. Fill up your gas tank in the county town before heading into the mountains, as gas stations are scarce. Stay for one night, then get an early start the next day to catch the sea of clouds. 2. ☁️ Daling Sea of Clouds Observation Deck Located at about the 45 km mark of the Taiyang Highway, at an altitude of 2,400 meters. It's easiest to catch the sea of clouds rolling over the mountain ridges on mornings after rain. This is a free observation deck; just park your car and walk to the railing to see the view. Seniors don't need to hike—the scenery is right there when you step out of the car. 3. 💧 Huangbaiyuan Dajiangou Known as the "Little Jiuzhaigou of the Qinling Mountains," featuring emerald streams and colorful forests. Admission is about CNY 60, and the CNY 30 sightseeing bus is a must to save energy. The wooden boardwalk along the stream is gentle, making it easy for seniors and children to walk for 2 hours without getting tired. In mid-to-late October, the red leaves reflecting on the water make for the best photos. 4. 🏯 Huayang Ancient Town A thousand-year-old ancient boat town deep in the mountains of Yang County, known as the "No. 1 Town in the Qinling Mountains." Exploring the ancient town is free; enjoy the stone-paved streets and old locust trees at a leisurely pace. This is the home of giant pandas, crested ibises, and golden snub-nosed monkeys. It's a more vivid way for children to learn about the "Four Treasures of the Qinling Mountains" than any textbook. 5. 🌲 Liuba Gaojiang Road A 39 km corridor of dawn redwoods, known as one of China's most beautiful rural roads. In early November, the dawn redwoods turn yellow and the ginkgo trees turn gold, making it feel like driving into a fairy tale. The entire route is free, and there are designated pull-offs along the road for parking and taking photos. The road is smooth and gentle, so you can drive slowly without causing motion sickness for seniors or children. 6. 🏮 Mianxian Wuhou Shrine A must-stop for Three Kingdoms fans; the tomb and shrine of Zhuge Liang are located here. Admission is about CNY 50. The ancient cypress trees tower overhead, and the autumn atmosphere is strong. Tell your children a story about the Three Kingdoms to keep the journey interesting. After visiting this stop, your 3-day loop is complete. 📌 Self-driving tips The peak of autumn for this entire route is from October 15–November 5. The Taiyang Highway has many curves and is narrow; do not drive at night and do not overtake on curves. The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains is significant, so be sure to bring a thick jacket. Fill up your gas tank in the county town beforehand and download offline maps.

Honestly, Liuba is the kind of place where you go once out of curiosity, but five times because you're hooked. This small county deep in the Qinling Mountains looks like a spilled palette in autumn and is lush enough to drip water in spring. I'm sharing my experience so you can avoid detours and pitfalls. 🏔 Trip highlights (I've personally visited each one multiple times) [Shizigou Pasture] Wilder than Guanshan Pasture. Cattle slowly cross the road, and you can lounge on the meadows. With the colorful forests in the distance, it's incredibly photogenic. [Taiziling Road] Not a scenic spot, but better than one—a must-drive. Clouds wrap around the mountain road, red leaves flow past the car windows, and the view opens up after a few bends. [Zibai Mountain] If you don't want to hike, take the cable car. The summit features scattered meadows and sinkholes. On clear days, you can see a sea of clouds—it feels ethereal. [Gaojiang Road, the most beautiful rural road] The dawn redwood corridor is stunning. Go in the early morning for fewer crowds and great light. The afternoon backlight is also dreamy, with golden needles covering both sides of the road. [Liuba Old Street] More charming at night than during the day. Red lanterns are hung up, and the bluestone paths are quiet. Eat a bowl of hot rice noodles and sit on the river embankment to catch the breeze—you'll feel completely relaxed. 🗺 Itinerary reference Day 1: Arrive in Liuba County > Stroll through the Old Street > Watch the sunset on a nearby hillside Day 2: Shizigou Pasture > Taiziling Road loop > Stay at a homestay in Huoshaodian Town Day 3: Full day at Zibai Mountain (bring snacks) > Chase the light at Gaojiang Road in the evening If you have extra time, add a day to visit Zhangliang Temple and the Plank Road Water World to experience the local culture. 🍜 Food recommendations (all established local spots) · "Chenji Hot Rice Noodles" in the county: The chili oil is fragrant but not harsh, and the rice noodles are soft and chewy · "Mountain Delicacy Trio Stew" in Huoshaodian Town: Cured pork ribs + dried green beans + potatoes; the soup is so delicious you'll lick the bowl clean · Street-side fried potato balls: Sprinkled with salt and pepper, they're best eaten on the go · Don't miss the stewed free-range chicken in autumn; the chestnuts inside are sweet 📌 Travel tips 1. Liuba has significant elevation changes and noticeable temperature differences in the mountains, so bring a light down jacket and rain gear 2. For self-driving, an SUV or a vehicle with high ground clearance is recommended. Be careful when passing other cars on some mountain roads 3. The best time to see the autumn colors at Taiziling and Zibai Mountain is from mid-to-late October to early November 4. Please take your trash with you when visiting the pastures and do not chase the animals 5. Homestays are in high demand on weekends; it's cost-effective to book a week in advance 6. Some sections in the mountains have no signal, so downloading offline maps will give you peace of mind Liuba isn't the kind of place that stuns you at first glance, but after staying for a few days, you'll want to stay. Five times isn't enough—I'm already planning my sixth trip 🚗
