Today, I'll take you to discover a different Lanzhou, allowing you to deeply experience the hidden charm of this Yellow River city. 【Lanshan Park: Lanzhou Locals' Backyard Garden】 Many tourists visit Baita Mountain, but few know that Lanshan Park is truly beloved by Lanzhou locals. In June, Lanshan is lush with greenery, and the temperature is 5℃ cooler than the city, making it a natural summer retreat. I recommend going up the mountain around 4 or 5 PM. First, find a spot in one of Lanshan's tea gardens, order a cup of Gaiwan tea, snack on sunflower seeds, and gaze at Lanzhou city below. This kind of leisurely feeling is something no other scenic spot can offer. Lanzhou's tea garden culture is truly therapeutic. For just a few dozen yuan, you can sit for an entire afternoon, with free sunflower seeds and hot water provided. You can play cards, chat, daydream, or simply do nothing but enjoy the breeze. In the evening, head to Santai Pavilion to watch the sunset and the night view. This is Lanzhou's most beautiful spot for night photography – as the sun sets and the city lights come on, the entire city of Lanzhou glows brightly, and the Yellow River flows through it like a golden ribbon. That breathtaking beauty will be unforgettable. After descending, you can go to Zhengning Road at the foot of the mountain for a late-night snack, or directly enjoy "Big Plate Chicken" (Dapanji) or "Kangkou Lamb" (Kangkou Yangrou) at one of the farmhouses on the mountain. The flavors are authentic, and the prices are reasonable. 【Agan Town: An Industrial Town Forgotten by Time】 Agan Town is just a 40-minute drive from Lanzhou. It's a 2-hour drive from Lanzhou. The water here is Tiffany blue and crystal clear, forming a stark contrast with the yellow Yellow River. You can take a boat tour of the reservoir and witness the spectacular "Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl" phenomenon where the Yellow River and Tao River converge, with the yellow river water and blue lake water distinctly separated, which is truly amazing. Due to its inconvenient location, there are very few tourists here, allowing you to quietly appreciate these artistic treasures without the crowds found at Mogao Grottoes. For lunch, enjoy reservoir fish at Liujiaxia. They are freshly caught, with tender meat, delicious whether braised or stewed. The residences here are typical Hui architecture, with exquisite brick carvings and intricate alleys, making you feel like you've stepped into the world of "One Thousand and One Nights." Best of all, it’s cool and peaceful. 1️⃣ Shennongjia | Hubei I arrived in Muyuzhen at 3 PM. The mountain breeze carried the bitter scent of pine needles, instantly cooling me down like stepping from a steam room into a fridge. 📍The winding mountain road to Shennong Peak has many curves, but with each turn, the clouds drift closer. At 5 PM, golden monkeys dart through the forest, leaving only the rustle of leaves behind. ⚠️Note, the cable car stops running at 4 PM. To catch the sunset glow, you’ll need to hike up to the rhododendron forest. 🍜 The cold-water fish hot pot in town has a clear broth and springy fish meat. Don’t order too much—the portions are generous. 2️⃣ Linfen | Shanxi Hongtong’s Great Pagoda Tree or Hukou Waterfall on the Yellow River—which do you choose? I vote for Hukou. ⏰Arrive before 10 AM to avoid crowds on the boardwalk and hear the water roaring underground. The Great Pagoda Tree is good for elders tracing their roots, but tickets aren’t cheap and there are only a few ancient trees. 📍Yunqiu Mountain is a pleasant surprise. Stay a night in the ancient village of Taerpo at the foot of the mountain. The kang bed is warm in winter and cool in summer. Early risers can learn to make flower-shaped steamed buns from the locals. 3️⃣ Bortala | Xinjiang If driving, head straight to the west shore of Sayram Lake—tourists crowd the east gate, but the west shore is so empty you can hear swans flapping their wings on the water. 📍The drone views of Anjihai Grand Canyon are stunning, but ⚠️ be sure to step back two steps from the cliff edge—the soil is loose. 🍜 The Mongolian yurt roast lamb in Wenquan County is juicy with cumin and snowmelt flavors. Visit both, but doing them in one day will wear you out. In the morning, take a boat tour of Liujiaxia Reservoir. The water is as green as jade, and the boat’s wake ripples the surface. In the afternoon, climb Bingling Temple. The stone-carved Buddha statues are embedded in red sandstone and sparkle in the sunlight. Q2 What to eat? Hand-pulled lamb with eight-treasure tea. The meat is tender, the tea sweet, and it cuts the richness. Q3 Is it suitable for elders? Liujiaxia has electric carts, but Bingling Temple has many steps. Those with bad knees should be cautious. 6️⃣ Dandong | Liaoning At 7 AM, the Yalu River Broken Bridge is empty. The river breeze mixed with morning fog from North Korea lets you see sentries smoking on the opposite bank. 📍Turn to Kuandian River Mouth. The rapeseed flower season is over, but the peach orchards and rice fields are dazzling green. Have stewed river fish at a farmhouse in Lijiang Village at noon. The fish soup is milky white and tastes great dipped in soybean paste. ⚠️Don’t climb all the way up Phoenix Mountain. Turning back halfway is easiest. The second half is too steep and will wreck your knees coming down. 7️⃣ Fuzhou | Jiangxi Dajue Mountain is a straightforward scenic spot—no gimmicks, just a rafting route and a mountain. I chose rafting. The gates open at 1 PM, and the water is so cold it gives you a shock. 🍜 The bakery in Zixi at the mountain’s base has freshly baked pork floss rolls, perfectly sweet and savory. After rain, the clouds cling to the treetops like cotton, more beautiful than any filter. ⚠️Don’t wear flip-flops rafting—you’ll get swept away. 8️⃣ Yushu | Qinghai If you’re confident with high altitude, head straight to the Hoh Xil uninhabited area. 📍Drive into the Kunlun Pass. Tibetan antelopes graze in small groups by the roadside. Roll down your window and the wind rushes in, carrying the scent of snowmelt. ⚠️Remember to bring an oxygen tank. Over 4,000 meters is no joke. 🍜 Drink a bowl of butter tea at a herder’s home. It’s salty, fragrant, and warming—enough to keep you going for hours. Sanjiangyuan National Park is better for serious travelers. Book a guide in advance and don’t wander alone—you can easily get lost. Sitting in the shade, the breeze felt cool. ⏰ Go to Ta’er Monastery at 8 AM before the crowds arrive. Start with the Small Golden Tile Hall, where the butter sculptures are brightly colored. Then climb the stone steps in front of the Large Golden Tile Hall. Looking down, you can see the entire golden roof at the mountain base. 📍 Dongguan Mosque is better visited in the evening. After prayers, the beef noodle stalls in the Muslim alley just set up. A bowl costs 8 yuan. The broth is clear, and the chili oil is fragrant but not spicy. By the way, skip the popular yogurt shops in Xining. The street carts serve yogurt in ceramic bowls that are very sour and cost only 3 yuan a bowl. 2️⃣ Xinyang | Henan Xinyang is the southernmost city in Henan. Jigong Mountain hides in the Dabie Mountains, and summer temperatures are 7–8 degrees cooler than downtown. When I visited, the mountain was foggy with visibility under 5 meters, but the coolness can’t be replaced by air conditioning. 🍜 At the foot of the mountain in Nanjie Town, there’s a “Lao Litou hot dry noodles” shop. Unlike Wuhan’s version, the noodles are drier and chewier. The sesame sauce is mixed with local cold-pressed sesame oil, and the aroma hits your nose when mixed. ⚠️ Don’t overestimate the main peak, Baoxiao Peak. A two-hour hike around the mountain is enough. The farmhouse dishes in Nanjie are tastier—a plate of clay pot chicken stewed over charcoal, flavorful chicken, eaten with flatbread. Two people can get full for 40–50 yuan. 3️⃣ Shuozhou | Shanxi Shuozhou is in northern Shanxi, with an average August temperature of just 22 degrees Celsius. Shahu Pass is a must-pass checkpoint on the western route. It’s free to enter now, only a 5-yuan parking fee. I stood on the ruined city wall. The loess was bleached by the sun, and the wind howled through the city gate. 📍 On the east side of the wall is a small path leading to ancient trade route ruins. The wheel ruts on both sides are still clear. It’s the joint tomb of the Ming Dynasty Jiajing Emperor’s parents, large in scale with well-preserved surface buildings. When I arrived, it was drizzling, the stone paths were shiny, and I was the only visitor. 🚄 Take a bus from Jingmen Station to Zhongxiang City, then transfer to a minibus. The whole trip takes about 2 hours. The total cost for bus and ticket is under 50 yuan. 🍜 In Zhongxiang, there’s a “time-honored Panlong dish” restaurant. They mince fish and pork into a paste, shape it like a dragon, steam it, then slice and dip in sauce. The texture is springy and smooth. One serving costs 28 yuan. 7️⃣ Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture | Gansu Liujiagxia Reservoir in Linxia is a natural air conditioner in summer. When I visited, the water was emerald green, and the surrounding cliffs were red. The contrast was stunning. ⏰ Go to Liujiagxia Tourist Resort in the morning. You can take a boat tour for 40 yuan. Mountains, rivers, and ancient towns await, from bustling streets to remote wilderness, offering a full experience with very different pace and budget. 1️⃣ Chengdu | Sichuan ⏰ At 7 or 8 AM, the mist on Tiantai Mountain hasn’t cleared, and the creek water is icy cold up to your ankles. Take a few steps and you’ll find a wild waterfall. Without non-slip shoes, you’ll slip on the wet stones. At noon, head straight to the back of Qingcheng Mountain. Skip the crowded front mountain temples; the back mountain is as cool as a natural air conditioner. Halfway through, turn into a farmhouse restaurant for a bowl of cold pot fish and an ice-cold cola. The light passing through the towers creates the cleanest golden silhouettes. ⚠️ The dirt road by the Yellow River is slippery when wet. Wear non-slip shoes. You’ll pass through Linxia along the way. If you have time, stroll around the Eight Lanes and Thirteen Alleys area—brick carvings and Hui culture are beyond picturesque. This July, Xiahe Airport launched new direct flights to Tianjin and Chongqing✈️ Flights run every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, so no need to transfer through Chengdu anymore! When hiking, the worst things are crowds and scorching sun, but Tianzhu Mountain has long routes and many trail options, so even in summer it’s never packed. ⏰ I suggest entering from the south gate before 7 AM and taking the first cable car up. At that time, the mountain is still shrouded in mist, the air is cool, and after climbing a few steps, you can smell the fresh pine scent warmed by the sun. When you reach the “Zongguanzhai” section, the path narrows suddenly, with stone steps underfoot and cliffs overhead, offering the most vivid sense of Anhui’s mountain beauty. ⚠️ One must-see is the Tianzhu Peak viewing platform at dusk. Yanmen Pass shows the grandeur of the frontier, while Laoniuwan features the winding Yellow River and unique loess landscapes. The ancient city is full of local life, with a wide variety of affordable noodle dishes. Attractions have moderate crowds, allowing you to experience rich history and culture while enjoying a cool summer getaway. Xinzhou is a lesser-known but high-quality summer travel destination in Shanxi. 5. Linxia Linxia’s climate in July is dry and cool, making summer very comfortable. The Eight Lanes and Thirteen Alleys area is full of strong northwestern folk customs, with charming streets perfect for photos. The suburban forest park has babbling streams. Local beef and lamb dishes have a great reputation, and the people are warm and friendly. The city is quiet and clean, avoiding the crowds of popular northwest destinations. It’s ideal for leisurely exploring and experiencing authentic northwestern life. 6. Zhaosu July is the most beautiful time in Zhaosu, with vast fields of blooming rapeseed flowers and towering snow-capped mountains in the distance, surrounded by endless grasslands. The temperature is cool and pleasant, with very few mosquitoes. Horseback riding across the grasslands offers an immersive experience. The small town is peaceful and relaxed, rich in Kazakh folk culture. The wide-open scenery is healing, and you don’t have to squeeze into crowded popular spots to enjoy Xinjiang’s unique summer charm. 7. Jiaxing In July, Xitang is shrouded in morning mist, creating a beautiful and poetic water town atmosphere. The scenery around South Lake is gentle and elegant. The commercial development here is restrained, avoiding excessive noise. Sitting by the river to drink tea is very relaxing. The old streets offer a wide variety of snacks, and transportation is convenient. It’s perfect for a slow weekend trip. Avoiding holiday peaks, you can enjoy a peaceful and cool July in the Jiangnan water town. 8. Dehong Dehong in July is warm and comfortable, with little sense of intense summer heat. The city is full of Dai ethnic exotic charm. Tropical fruits are sold everywhere at low prices, and the unique flavors of Dai snacks are abundant. The streets are leisurely and the pace of life is slow. The Menghuan Golden Pagoda is magnificent. When summer vacation starts, popular attractions get packed like dumplings. I scoured the map and found 8 places with fewer people, cooler temperatures, and plenty of fun for kids. All reachable by high-speed train, affordable, and best of all, no long lines for tickets. Taking the kids here saves you half the effort. 1️⃣ Yancheng | Jiangsu Dafeng China Milu Park is the most unlike-a-zoo zoo I’ve ever seen. The milu deer roam freely, and when you drive in, they stroll right by the roadside. Roll down the window and they’ll sniff your nose. ⚠️ Remember to bring a basket of carrots. They cost 5 yuan a bag. When feeding them, their noses get wet, and the kids can’t stop laughing. The park also has electric boats that take you deep into the wetlands to see birds. 🕐 Best to go early morning when the deer are most active and it’s cooler. It takes about 2 hours to walk the whole park. Strollers are welcome. 2️⃣ Handan | Hebei Guangfu Ancient City and Nuwa Palace feel like a martial arts world and a mountain-hanging myth. Guangfu Ancient City has no hills to climb, and you can push a stroller all around the city walls. Walking on the bluestone path, stalls sell sesame candy and homespun cloth, and the air smells like fried dough sticks. Kids chase stray cats while I lean on the wall watching wild grass grow in the cracks. ⚠️ The city walls are free to enter after 5:30 PM for sunset viewing. Nuwa Palace is in She County, about an hour’s drive from the city. Bring an umbrella as it can rain anytime on the mountain. Tickets are cheap but “subject to official daily announcements.” If the kids get tired, there are slide carts inside the park that save you from climbing most of the mountain. 3️⃣ Taiyuan | Shanxi Tianlongshan Grottoes and Jin Temple are perfect for telling kids a “historical tomb raider” story. The plank road at Tianlongshan is suspended over a valley, making you feel like you’re walking in the clouds. The kids ask why the Buddha’s hand is broken, and I tell them about the “Buddha destruction movement” along the way. They listen with fascination. ⚠️ It’s windy, so bring a jacket. The sun is strong at noon, but the light is better after 3 PM. The Jin Temple Museum has ancient trees and a flying bridge. Kids can run around three times without getting tired. 🍜 Don’t forget to buy a bowl of hand-shaved noodles at the Jin Temple entrance. They’re freshly cut and cooked, chewy with a sesame-scented chili oil. In the evening, visit Jinyang Lake Park. It’s windy by the lake, kids fly kites, and I lie on the grass daydreaming. 🕐 The sunset at Jinyang Lake is best around 7 PM. 4️⃣ Shizuishan | Ningxia Shahu Lake is where desert meets water, and kids will scream with excitement. The sand is so fine it feels like powder, and reeds grow in the lake, looking like an ink painting from afar. I let the kids walk barefoot in the sand, warm sand squeezing between their toes, making them laugh all the way. 🕐 After 5 PM, the sun isn’t as harsh, and you can still walk barefoot on the sand. 🚄 It’s only a half-hour high-speed train ride from Yinchuan. ⚠️ Bring plenty of water into the park. There are few places to buy water inside, and it’s expensive. You can take a boat through the reed beds, which kids love. If you bring a shovel, they can dig in the sand all afternoon. 5️⃣ Hainan | Qinghai Riyue Mountain and Guide National Geopark sit at 3,500 meters elevation and by the Yellow River, respectively. The wind at Riyue Mountain is strong enough to blow your hair wild. The sky feels low, almost pressing down, with white sheep scattered across the grassland. 🚄 Starting from Xining, you can tour both in one day by car. ⚠️ Watch for altitude sickness in kids. I brought oxygen and Rhodiola. Guide’s geopark looks like God’s palette, with Danxia red mountains like rust. The kids stood by the road watching the wind-eroded mountains and said, “They look like leftover mille crepe cake.” 🍜 In Guide town, street vendors sell freshly baked barley cakes, crispy outside and soft inside. 6️⃣ Shantou | Guangdong Nan’ao Island is where Guangdong locals escape the summer heat. The sea here rivals Sanya, but prices are half as much. We stayed on the island’s east side at Qing’ao Bay, with the sea right outside the window. At dusk, the tide recedes, revealing countless small crabs. The kids shine flashlights on them, and they scuttle sideways. ⚠️ The island has many seafood stalls, but check prices before ordering. I recommend “Sister Xu’s seafood” for fair prices and large shrimp. 🚄 Get off at Shantou Station, take a taxi to Laiwu Ferry, then a 20-yuan ferry to the island. ⏰ The Nan’ao Bridge closes by 10 PM. After that, you must stay on the island overnight. 7️⃣ Wuhan | Hubei Huanghelou Park, East Lake, Songyang Temple, and Huangpi Mulan Cultural Ecotourism Area can be visited together in two days. Huanghelou requires stairs at the entrance, but there’s an elevator nearby if the kids can’t climb. 🍜 Eat a bowl of hot dry noodles at Hubu Alley under Huanghelou. Cycling around East Lake takes about 2 hours, with kids riding in the back seat. ⚠️ The Liyuan Greenway at East Lake is great for kids to ride bikes. It’s wide and flat. Songyang Temple is hidden in the mountains, with three thousand-year-old ginkgo trees at the entrance, even more beautiful in autumn. At Huangpi’s Mulan Tianchi, kids can row boats and play in the water. 🕐 It’s best to visit East Lake first, then Huangpi. East Lake is cooler in the morning, and the mountains are cooler in the afternoon. 8️⃣ Linxia | Gansu Liujiaxia and Bingling Temple offer blue reservoir views and ancient grottoes. The Liujiaxia reservoir looks like sapphire blue from afar and crystal clear up close. We rented a boat to the lake’s center, surrounded by Danxia red mountains. The kids leaned over the boat and asked, “Is the water dyed blue?” 🚄 Take the high-speed train from Lanzhou to Linxia, then a taxi to the dock. Bingling Temple’s grottoes are older than Mogao Caves.
