Linxia travel guide and discussion

The brick carvings of Bafang Shisan Alley, the thousand-year-old Buddha light of Bingling Temple, the turquoise Danxia of Liujiaxia, plus the lively atmosphere of hand-pulled lamb—this is the most underrated treasure in northwest China🌟. Known as the "most beautiful sky road." Recommended 3-day route: · Day 1: Lanzhou → Guanghe Qijia Culture Museum → Hezheng Ancient Animal Fossil Museum → Songming research town · Day 2: Songmingyan → Fataishan → Xingyu Yunduan → Erzixuliang Fusuo town · Day 3: Yunshang Hezhou scenic area → Guantan Valley → Jishishan Stone Sea → Huangcaoping 🍜 Food recommendations The Linxia Tourism Bureau officially compiled the "top 10 dishes + top 10 snacks + top 10 snacks." I picked the must-try ones for you👇 🥩 Must-try hearty dishes · Dongxiang hand-pulled lamb: Linxia’s signature! Selected lamb boiled in clear water, tender and odorless, dipped in salt and pepper · Linxia stir-fried grass chicken: The specialty of every farmhouse in Zheqiao Bay, listed as intangible cultural heritage in 2024, stir-fried quickly with green peppers and garlic sprouts · Hezhou eight bowls: seaweed, braised beef, braised lamb, eight-treasure rice… each bowl holds the passion of northwest people · Hezhou hot pot: Suleiman hot pot is a locally recommended famous restaurant (order dishes as you go, no need to remember the exact location) 🥟 Street snacks · Hezhou niangpi (cold skin noodles): provincial intangible heritage, golden and translucent, chewy and elastic, sour and spicy and refreshing · Fazi mianchang (fermented dough sausage): Linxia’s intangible heritage twin treasures, soft and fragrant dough, chewy and tender sausage · Hezhou steamed buns: paper-thin skin, juicy and fragrant lamb and chive filling · Hezhou beef offal soup: morning staple, beef tripe and head meat slow-cooked in old broth, served with fried dough twists 🍵 Summer coolers · Sanpao Tai covered bowl tea: the soul of Linxia tea culture, one sip drives away summer heat · Sweet fermented oat wine: sweet and fragrant fermented oat wine, great eaten dry or mixed with milk · Egg milk fermented glutinous rice wine: traditional rye fermented wine from a local old brand, about 8 CNY per person 💡 Linxia is a typical multiethnic area. Halal restaurants prohibit bringing in non-halal food. Dress appropriately when entering mosques. 🎒 Practical tips 🚗 Transportation: Land at Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport or Lanzhou West Station, take a bus or shared ride to Linxia (about 2 hours), ticket price 40–60 CNY. Attractions are scattered, so self-driving or renting a car on arrival is recommended, about 200 CNY per day on Trip.com. 🏨 Accommodation: Chain hotels in the city cost 120–200 CNY per night; ethnic-style guesthouses near Bafang Shisan Alley cost 150–300 CNY per night, offering a better experience. 👗 Clothing: Average temperature 15–25℃ from June to August, with large temperature differences between day and night. Bring a windbreaker! UV rays are strong on sunny days, so sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sun hat are essential. 📿 Etiquette: No photography or loud noise inside mosques; turn prayer wheels clockwise; respect local religious beliefs. 📅 Best season: April to October, with July and August as the prime summer retreat months, averaging 23℃ natural air conditioning🌬️ The most charming thing about Linxia is its unhurried northwest pace—waking up to the aroma of covered bowl tea in the morning, listening to elders tell Hezhou stories under the brick carvings of Bafang Shisan Alley at dusk, and eating hand-pulled lamb while watching the starry sky over the Yellow River Three Gorges at night✨. It’s not as crowded as Dunhuang, nor as remote as Gannan. It quietly waits for you to discover it.

If you've already visited Lanzhou, tried beef noodles, and walked across Zhongshan Bridge, then this guide is for you. Lanzhou's charm extends far beyond its popular tourist spots. In June, Jincheng (Lanzhou) holds many hidden gems cherished by locals, offering an escape from the hustle of tour groups and a taste of authentic Northwest life. Today, I'll take you to discover a different Lanzhou, allowing you to deeply experience the hidden charm of this Yellow River city. 【Lanshan Park: Lanzhou Locals' Backyard Garden】 Many tourists visit Baita Mountain, but few know that Lanshan Park is truly beloved by Lanzhou locals. In June, Lanshan is lush with greenery, and the temperature is 5℃ cooler than the city, making it a natural summer retreat. I recommend going up the mountain around 4 or 5 PM. First, find a spot in one of Lanshan's tea gardens, order a cup of Gaiwan tea, snack on sunflower seeds, and gaze at Lanzhou city below. This kind of leisurely feeling is something no other scenic spot can offer. Lanzhou's tea garden culture is truly therapeutic. For just a few dozen yuan, you can sit for an entire afternoon, with free sunflower seeds and hot water provided. You can play cards, chat, daydream, or simply do nothing but enjoy the breeze. In the evening, head to Santai Pavilion to watch the sunset and the night view. This is Lanzhou's most beautiful spot for night photography – as the sun sets and the city lights come on, the entire city of Lanzhou glows brightly, and the Yellow River flows through it like a golden ribbon. That breathtaking beauty will be unforgettable. After descending, you can go to Zhengning Road at the foot of the mountain for a late-night snack, or directly enjoy "Big Plate Chicken" (Dapanji) or "Kangkou Lamb" (Kangkou Yangrou) at one of the farmhouses on the mountain. The flavors are authentic, and the prices are reasonable. 【Agan Town: An Industrial Town Forgotten by Time】 Agan Town is just a 40-minute drive from Lanzhou. This industrial town, with a history of over a century, was once Lanzhou's most important coal mining base. Now, its prosperity has faded, but it has left behind precious memories of an era. Walking through the town's streets, with Soviet-style buildings, abandoned factories, and old cinemas on both sides, feels like stepping back into the 1970s or 80s. I especially recommend visiting Shifogou National Forest Park, right next to Agan Town. This is a pristine secondary forest with over 90% forest coverage. In June, Shifogou is covered in blooming wildflowers, and the air is fresh, making it a natural oxygen bar. You can hike in the forest or picnic by the stream. This secluded tranquility is truly therapeutic. For lunch, try a bowl of Lamb Paomo in Agan Town. This local specialty is different from Xi'an's Paomo; Lanzhou's version is boiled, resulting in a richer broth and more tender meat, which is very delicious. There are also many shops in town selling handmade potato vermicelli, which are chewy and great to buy a few pounds to take home. 【Liujiaxia Reservoir: The Blue Pearl on the Plateau】 Many people don't know that a "Plateau Maldives" – Liujiaxia Reservoir – is hidden near Lanzhou. It's a 2-hour drive from Lanzhou. The water here is Tiffany blue and crystal clear, forming a stark contrast with the yellow Yellow River. You can take a boat tour of the reservoir and witness the spectacular "Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl" phenomenon where the Yellow River and Tao River converge, with the yellow river water and blue lake water distinctly separated, which is truly amazing. I highly recommend visiting Bingling Temple Grottoes, one of China's four major grottoes, with a history of over 1600 years, predating the Mogao Grottoes. The Buddha statues and murals in the grottoes are exquisite, especially the 27-meter-tall Great Buddha in Cave 171, which is incredibly impressive. Due to its inconvenient location, there are very few tourists here, allowing you to quietly appreciate these artistic treasures without the crowds found at Mogao Grottoes. For lunch, enjoy reservoir fish at Liujiaxia. They are freshly caught, with tender meat, delicious whether braised or stewed. Also, order a local bowl of Jiangshui Mian (sour soup noodles), which is spicy, sour, and refreshing – perfect for summer. 【Bafang Shisanxiang: Hui Ethnic Charm in Linxia】 Linxia is a 1.5-hour drive from Lanzhou, known as "China's Little Mecca," with a rich Hui ethnic flavor. Bafang Shisanxiang (Eight Blocks, Thirteen Alleys) is Linxia's most representative attraction. The residences here are typical Hui architecture, with exquisite brick carvings and intricate alleys, making you feel like you've stepped into the world of "One Thousand and One Nights." You can stroll leisurely through the alleys, watch elderly Hui people pray, listen to the joyful laughter of children, and experience the most authentic Hui life. I especially recommend visiting Dong Gongguan (East Mansion), a century-old mansion whose brick carving art is unparalleled. Each brick carving is lifelike and is a national intangible cultural heritage. For lunch in Linxia, try Hand-Grabbed Lamb. The lamb here is even more delicious than Lanzhou's, tender and without any gamey smell, paired with Gaiwan tea, it's absolutely superb. Also, try Fazimianchang (noodle sausage), Niangpizi (cold noodles), and Tianpeizi (sweet fermented oats); every dish is delicious and won't disappoint. You must also try Linxia's Eight Treasure Tea, which contains goji berries, red dates, longans, sesame seeds, and raisins, making it sweet, fragrant, and increasingly delightful with every sip. 【Lanzhou Locals' Late-Night Canteen】 Lanzhou's nightlife truly begins after dark. Don't just go to Zhengning Road; locals prefer Nanguan Ethnic Flavor Street. Any lamb skewer shop here is delicious. I recommend grilled lamb kidney, grilled lamb tendon, and grilled lamb tripe, all freshly cut and grilled, with tender meat and an enticing aroma of cumin and chili. I especially recommend the Fangha Tianpeizi Milk Tea here. This is a unique Lanzhou milk tea that combines Tianpeizi (sweet fermented oats) with milk tea, offering a unique taste that is both delicious and refreshing. Also, try Jiangshui Louyu, made from corn flour, shaped like small fish, soaked in sour soup, it's sour, spicy, and refreshing – a must-have summer delicacy. You can also visit Nongmin Alley, Lanzhou's food street, offering a wide variety of cuisines, from Northwest dishes to Sichuan cuisine, from hot pot to barbecue, you'll find everything. I recommend Pang Mama Hand-Grabbed Lamb, a long-standing Lanzhou brand, whose Hand-Grabbed Lamb, Braised Lamb, and Big Plate Chicken are all very authentic. Lanzhou in June is a city full of surprises. It's not a city that immediately wows you, but if you slow down and delve into its streets and alleys, you'll discover its charm hidden in every bowl of beef noodles, in every cup of Gaiwan tea, and in the smiles of every Lanzhou local. Come to Lanzhou, slow down, and experience the most authentic vibrancy and poetry of this golden city. --- Accommodation 🏨 Gansu Jinghu Wild Luxury Lake View Villa with Terrace 180° panoramic lake view independent villa with terrace, cabin-style tent design, and a lakeside restaurant. With the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day falling during the crisp autumn season, the biggest fear when traveling with kids is crowds and high costs. I've selected 8 low-budget, small cities with a slow pace, good food, and minimal walking, so the kids won't have meltdowns and the adults won't be exhausted. 1️⃣ Hechi | Guangxi The karst landscapes along the Hongshui River are wild and uncrowded, and the prices are so low I thought I misread the menu. 📍 Donglan's landscapes are best visited in the morning; when the morning mist hasn't cleared, the mountain shadows press against the water, and kids will stare at it for a long time. The water at Jiudun Sky Window is so clear you can count the stones, but the banks are slippery, so ⚠️ don't let kids get too close to the water's edge alone. The bamboo raft route at Xiangbei Fairyland is best, ⏰ after 3:00 PM when the light is soft and not backlit for photos. I recommend cycling at Sanli Yangdu; the roads are flat and there's little traffic, perfect for riding a tandem bike with kids. Stay in Donglan County; a standard room is just over CNY 100, and there's a noodle shop right downstairs. 🍜 Try a bowl of fresh-pressed rice noodles with braised pork; there are non-spicy versions for kids. Two days and one night is enough—don't try to do too much. 2️⃣ Hainan | Qinghai Don't be fooled by the name; there's no ocean here, just the refreshing autumn of the plateau. Riyue Mountain is windy, so ⏰ arrive before 10:00 AM when it's less crowded and the clouds are low. Pack a windbreaker for the kids; the temperature at the mountain pass is 7–8 degrees lower than in the county. The Danxia landforms at Guide National Geopark are vibrant, but the trails are exposed, so ⚠️ don't force it at noon; go after 4:00 PM. It's about a two-hour drive from Xining, or 🚄 you can take a bus to Guide and then a taxi. Stay in Guide County; family rooms are around CNY 150 and it's quiet at night. 🍜 I recommend trying the "ga mianpian" (noodle flakes) and "kun guo mo" (steamed bun); kids usually like them. The altitude is just over 2,000 meters, so altitude sickness is unlikely, but don't let the kids run or jump too vigorously. 3️⃣ Kaifeng | Henan The ancient city is compact with attractions clustered together, so you can see most of the Song Dynasty highlights with kids in two days. I suggest entering Millennium City Park ⏰ right at opening. Watch the Bao Gong welcoming ceremony in the morning and the live water performance in the afternoon; the kids will love the equestrian show the most. Iron Pagoda Park is peaceful, and the glazed bricks on the pagoda are worth a close look, but ⚠️ the steps to climb the pagoda are steep, so don't let small children go up. Xiangguo Temple and Bao Gong Temple can be done in the same half-day; 📍 it's on the way if you walk through Shudian Street. 🍜 At the Gulou Night Market, I only recommend the almond tea and stir-fried cold noodles; other stalls are overpriced. Stay near the Drum Tower; most spots are within walking distance. 🚄 A taxi from Kaifeng North Station to the city center is about CNY 25. Avoid the midday heat, go back to the hotel for a nap, and head out again after 4:00 PM—this is the key to avoiding meltdowns with kids. 4️⃣ Zaozhuang | Shandong Taierzhuang Ancient Town is the only star here, but I suggest staying inside the town rather than outside. ⏰ Enter the ancient town after 4:00 PM to see the lanterns light up—the kids will "wow" out loud. You must take a sculling boat; the boatwoman will sing folk songs, and it takes about 20 minutes one way. ⚠️ Hotel prices double on weekends, so book your inn inside the town in advance. There are many stone roads in the ancient town, so strollers can be bumpy; a baby carrier is easier. 🍜 Vegetable pancakes and yellow croaker beef noodles are local specialties, and kids love the noodles. There are night tour activities during the Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays; it's crowded but orderly. You can find a nice place to stay for under CNY 300 a night. Don't buy the bundled tickets from touts at the entrance; official channels are more reliable. 5️⃣ Sanming | Fujian The water-based Danxia landforms of Dajin Lake are beautiful even without filters. The boat tour of the lake takes about 3 hours; ⏰ choose a morning slot for good light and to avoid the sun. 📍 Ganlu Temple is embedded in the rock face, and kids will ask, "How did they build that?" Explore Taining Ancient Town in the evening; Shangshu Mansion is worth entering, but ⚠️ it's closed on Mondays. There are buses from the county to the scenic area, or 🚄 take a taxi from Taining Station for about CNY 15. Stay at a guesthouse near the ancient town; you can get one for under CNY 200. 🍜 "Nuangu" buns and "biyu" rolls are local specialties with a mild flavor suitable for children. A two-day itinerary is just right; families with more energy can add a third day for Zhaixia Grand Canyon. 6️⃣ Linxia | Gansu The water at Liujiaxia is a stunning blue-green; taking a boat in feels like sailing into a painting. You need to take a speedboat to the Bingling Temple World Cultural Heritage Tourist Area, so ⏰ leave in the morning when the wind and waves are calmer. The kids will be excited, but ⚠️ make sure they wear life jackets and don't let them stand at the bow. It's worth hiring a guide for the grottoes, otherwise, you won't understand what you're seeing. Liujiaxia Tourist Resort is perfect for a slow afternoon stroll; there are lawns by the lake where you can lay out a picnic mat and rest. 🚄 It's about a 1.5-hour drive from Lanzhou. Stay in Linxia city; family hotels are around CNY 150. 🍜 Hand-grabbed mutton and Hezhou buns are filling, and kids can eat them too. Overall costs are low, making it perfect for an off-peak trip during the Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays. 7️⃣ Zhoushan | Zhejiang The key to traveling with kids on an island isn't checking off sights, but finding a beach where they can play on their own. Putuoshan Scenic Area is crowded, so ⏰ catch an early ferry to the island and leave before noon. ⚠️ Prices on the island are high, so stock up on water and snacks in advance. Gouqi Island and Shengsi Islands are better for families, with gentle beaches and small waves. Ferry tickets must be booked in advance; 🚄 it's convenient to depart from Shanghai or Ningbo. Stay in a guesthouse; they are over CNY 200 in the off-season, but prices will rise during the Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays, so book early. 🍜 Seafood noodles are a staple, but don't eat right at the entrance of the scenic area; walk two streets in and the price will be half. If you're with kids, I suggest picking just one island—don't island-hop, it's exhausting for the adults. 8️⃣ Baicheng | Jilin In autumn at Nenjiang Bay, the reeds turn yellow, and the wind makes a rustling sound. Daan Nenjiang Bay Tourist Area is best visited ⏰ in the evening; the sunset hits the river, and kids can spend half an hour just picking up stones. ⚠️ It's windy by the river, so bring an extra jacket. The park is large, so rent a sightseeing car to save your legs. 🚄 It's about an hour from Baicheng Station to Daan, or driving is more flexible. Stay in Daan city; a standard room is just over CNY 100. 🍜 Try the river fish and sticky bean buns; the flavors are authentic. There are few tourists here, so it won't be crowded during the Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays, and you can have a two-day trip for a budget of CNY 500. It's perfect for families who want a quiet trip with kids. Of these 8 places, I most recommend Hechi and Sanming for their wild scenery and low prices. What's your biggest fear when traveling with kids? Let's chat in the comments, and I'll help you avoid the pitfalls.

Pair with Sanpaotai (covered bowl tea) to cleanse the palate after a meaty meal. 💡 Portions are large, so order accordingly. The menu is primarily beef and lamb, and most options are Halal. First, a quick word: Traveling with kids during the National Day holiday is stressful—nobody wants to deal with long lines, tired children, or overspending only to end up frustrated 😭 These 4 small, off-the-beaten-path cities have flat terrain, offer great learning opportunities, and are fun for kids without exhausting the adults. A 3-day, 2-night trip costs around 1,500 per person👇 1️⃣ Pingtang, Guizhou | The first lesson in cosmic enlightenment: Seeing the FAST telescope 🔭 📍 Qiannan, Guizhou Why choose it? The world's largest single-dish radio telescope, "China Sky Eye" (FAST), is located in Kedu Town, Pingtang. Kids can get an up-close look at this major scientific achievement. As China's porcelain capital, kids can try their hand at throwing clay and painting porcelain, and even take home the cups they make. Visit the Ancient Kiln Folk Customs Museum to see kilns from different dynasties, browse handmade goods at the Taoxichuan night market, and explore studios in Sanbao Village. It's a reverse-travel destination for the National Day holiday, with fewer crowds than Nanchang. 🚄 Transportation: Direct high-speed train to Jingdezhen North Station: 2 hours from Hangzhou, 3 hours from Shanghai, 1 hour from Nanchang. Use taxis or buses within the city. 🏠 Accommodation: Homestays near Taoxichuan are 150–280 per night; homestays in Sanbao Village are 200–350. 🍖 Food: Cold noodles, dumpling cakes (jiaozi ba), fried dough sticks wrapped in sticky rice (youtiao bao maci), and porcelain clay-baked chicken. Visit the Liujiaxia Dinosaur National Geopark to see dinosaur footprints, and take a boat tour of the Yellow River Danxia landforms at Bingling Temple Grottoes. It's a quiet spot for the National Day holiday. 🚗 Transportation: About a 1.5-hour drive from Lanzhou, or take a bus from Lanzhou South Bus Station to Linxia. Book museums/the telescope in advance and bring your ID. 2. Plan only one core activity per day and return to the hotel for a nap at noon. 3. Hiring a car or renting one is less stressful than taking the bus. 4. Pack common medications, a thermos, mosquito repellent, and sunscreen. 5. There is a large temperature difference between day and night in mountainous/high-altitude areas, so bring a light jacket. 6. Do not feed or touch wild animals, and follow venue rules. 7. Wear comfortable, flat shoes. 8. Don't rush between attractions; slowing down makes it more fun for the kids. A final heartfelt piece of advice: You don't need to squeeze into crowded hotspots with your kids during the National Day holiday. Seeing the telescope in Pingtang, digging for dinosaurs in Zigong, making pottery in Jingdezhen, or seeing ancient fossils in Linxia—these places don't cost much, but they truly broaden a child's horizons. Save this and send it to your parenting partner, and let's go for it this National Day!

What's the worst thing about traveling with kids during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays? Queues, walking, and the stress of your child complaining of exhaustion and causing you to break down. I personally tested 8 cities with a slower pace, complete facilities, and high stroller-friendliness, ensuring neither adults nor children will be overwhelmed. 01 Qiqihar | Heilongjiang When bringing kids to Zhalong, don't rush. ⏰ The 9:30 AM crane release is the safest. The red-crowned cranes swoop across the reeds, and kids can look up in awe. The scenic boardwalk is flat, suitable for strollers, but it's windy, so make sure your child wears a hat. Don't crowd the front row to see the cranes; the back row offers a wider view. 📍 Rent an electric scooter at the entrance of the Zhalong Ecological Tourism Area; it's perfect for a family of three. Have lunch back in the city for barbecue; Qiqihar's mixed meat is suitable for kids and not spicy. ⚠️ After 2 PM, the cranes are mostly still, so don't wait in vain. Bring some bread and water, as supplies are limited in the scenic area. Suitable for ages 3 and up; younger children may have difficulty sitting still. 🚄 A taxi ride from Qiqihar Station to Zhalong takes about 40 minutes. During the National Day holiday, it's recommended to book in advance, as there are fewer cars on the return trip and you might have to wait a long time. Buy tickets one day in advance through the official WeChat mini-program; queuing at the ticket window on-site can be very long. For accommodation, choose a location near the Longsha District commercial area; it's convenient for dining and shopping, and you can take your child for a walk in the evening. During the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, there's a large temperature difference between day and night, so bring a light down jacket and long pants; don't just wear short sleeves. 02 Huangshi|Hubei Chengyue Island is the kind of place where "adults stroll and kids run around." 📍 Enter from Cihu East Road; the island's circular trail is less than 3 kilometers, making it easy to push a stroller. ⏰ The best time to go is around 5 pm; the lake breeze is cool, the light is soft, and you won't squint when taking photos. There are no proper restaurants on the island, so 🍜 it's recommended to bring your own rice balls and fruit to eat at a pavilion. ⚠️ Weekends are crowded, parking is a race against time, arrive half an hour early. Suitable for families with elderly members, as there are many flat roads and plenty of benches. On rainy days, go to a nearby shopping mall instead; don't force yourself to shop. 🚄 It takes about 20 minutes by taxi from Huangshi North Station to Cihu Lake. Buses also go there, but there are many transfers. Taking a taxi with children is more convenient. Choose accommodation near Tuanchengshan, as it's close to the lake and convenient for evening walks. If your child is energetic, you can visit Huangshi National Mining Park in the morning to ride the mini-train and see the mine pits, then come to Chengyue Island in the afternoon. During the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, mosquitoes at the lakeside may not have completely disappeared, so bring mosquito repellent patches and long pants; don't wait until you're bitten to regret it. 03 Qinhuangdao|Hebei I suggest splitting Beidaihe and Shanhaiguan into two days. For Beidaihe beachcombing, check the tide table and arrive an hour before low tide. Bring small buckets and shovels; children can dig for small crabs. ⏰ The beach is least crowded at 7 am; it gets very hot after 10 am. At Shanhaiguan, 📍 the First Pass Under Heaven has many steps on the city gate tower, so don't force your stroller up; leave it at the foot of the mountain. 🍜 For lunch, have four steamed buns; the skin is thin, and kids love them. ⚠️ Don't just take any speedboat ride at the beach; ask about the price and duration first. Suitable for children over four years old who can walk for a while. 🚄 It takes about ten minutes by taxi from Beidaihe Station to the beach. Shanhaiguan Station is closer to the ancient city; booking tickets for the two parts separately is easier. For accommodation, I suggest staying one night in Beidaihe and one night in Shanhaiguan to avoid the hassle of traveling back and forth. Beachcombing tools are half the price at local supermarkets compared to the tourist areas; a small bucket, shovel, and gloves are enough. During the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, it can be cool at the beach in the mornings and evenings, so bring a windproof jacket for your child; they can change into a lighter shirt at midday—it's normal to experience two seasons in one day. 04 Linxia | Gansu Liujiaxia and Bingling Temple offer a combination of "seeing the scenery by boat and visiting the caves after disembarking." 🚄 It takes about an hour to drive from Linxia city to Liujiaxia, so leave early. Take a large boat to Bingling Temple, which takes about two hours one way. It can be windy on the boat, so bring a jacket for your child. 📍 The steps to the Bingling Temple grottoes are steep, so be careful if you're carrying a child and don't let them wear flip-flops. ⏰ The afternoon light is best when it shines on the Buddha statues. ⚠️ Buy boat tickets and entrance tickets separately. Don't be lured in by touts at the entrance. Suitable for children aged five and up who are interested in stones and boats. 🚄 There is no direct public transportation from Linxia to Liujiaxia. Driving or hiring a car is the safest option. Negotiate the price for a day car hire in advance, including waiting time. There are no proper meals on the boat, so buy some snacks and fruit in the city before departure so your child can have a snack if they get hungry. Boat services are more frequent during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, but the return trip in the afternoon can be crowded, so try to catch an early boat. Choose accommodation near the Eight Squares and Thirteen Lanes in Linxia city center. In the evening, you can stroll through the old streets and eat hand-pulled noodles; the pace is slow and the kids won't get tired. 05 Zhoukou | Henan Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum and Taiqing Palace sound solemn, but they're actually very relaxing to visit with kids. 📍 Fuxi Mausoleum has many ancient trees, providing shade in summer, allowing children to run around freely. ⏰ Go in the morning when there are fewer people and the air is cooler. Taiqing Palace is even quieter, suitable for strolling slowly. 🍜 For lunch, have a bowl of spicy soup with fried dough sticks; even kids can eat a few bites of the non-spicy version. ⚠️ The drive between the two places is about 40 minutes; don't overschedule. Suitable for school-aged children interested in stories; younger children may find it boring. 🚄 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from Zhoukou East Station to Huaiyang District. Bus services are infrequent; it's recommended to take a taxi or drive with children. The entrance fee to Fuxi Mausoleum isn't expensive, but an audio guide is worth renting; telling kids the story of Fuxi drawing the Eight Trigrams is more interesting than just looking at it. There's a temple fair in Huaiyang during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays; it's crowded but lively, so if you have a stroller, try to avoid peak times and use side paths. Choose accommodation in Zhoukou city; you can eat snacks around the Guandi Temple in the evening, and then head to Taiqing Palace the next day – a perfect pace. 06 Chuxiong | Yunnan Choose either Yuanmou Earth Forest or Wumao Earth Forest. I recommend Wumao; the formations are more concentrated, making it easier to walk. 📍 There are sightseeing buses within the scenic area; don't force children to walk. ⏰ After 4 PM, the light is oblique, the earth forest turns red, making for beautiful photos, and it's not too sunny. Visit the Yi People's Ancient Town in the evening; 🍜 eat grilled tofu and mushrooms, and children can watch the fire pits. ⚠️ There's no shade in the earth forest; hats and water are essential. Suitable for children over five years old who enjoy digging and playing in the sand. 🚄 There's a high-speed train from Chuxiong Station to Yuanmou, taking about an hour. From there, it's about a 30-minute taxi ride to Wumao Earth Forest. It's easier to buy the sightseeing bus ticket and entrance ticket together; don't buy them separately inside. During the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, the Earth Forest is still hot during the day, so sunscreen and a sun hat are essential, and each person should have at least one bottle of water. Stay overnight in Chuxiong city. There are many guesthouses around Yi Ancient Town; if you have children, choose a first-floor room or a room with an elevator for easy stroller access. 07 Shannan | Tibet Yamdrok Lake: Consider your child's health before going. 🚄 It's about a two-hour drive from Lhasa, with the altitude increasing steadily, so don't let your child sleep too soundly in the car. ⏰ Arrive at the lake at noon when the light is brightest, and the lake water is an unreal blue. 📍 There are steps to the viewing platform; walk slowly and avoid running or jumping. Bring some glucose and hot water. ⚠️ It's windy and cold; a down jacket is necessary. Not recommended for children under three, as adults may experience altitude sickness. Suitable for older children who can express discomfort. 🚄 A day trip by chartered car from Lhasa to Yamdrok Lake is the most reliable option. Shared rides are cheaper, but the schedule is less flexible; don't skimp on this if you're traveling with children. The route passes the Gangbala Pass at an altitude of 5,000 meters; stop for no more than ten minutes, take photos, and then descend. The wind is stronger by the lake during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays; gloves and scarves are more useful than expected, and fill your child's thermos with hot water. If your child didn't sleep well the night before or has a cold, cancel the trip; safety is more important than the scenery. 08 Zhongwei|Ningxia Gaomiao Temple and Bao'an Temple, and Shapotou: one for architecture, the other for sand play. 📍 Gaomiao Temple is small; you can explore it in half an hour. The stairs are narrow; be careful not to bump your child's head while carrying them. ⏰ Enter Shapotou after 4 PM to avoid the intense sun. Sandboarding and sheepskin rafting are both popular with kids, but ⚠️ these activities are charged separately, so ask beforehand if the package deal is worthwhile. 🍜 In the evening, we'll have wormwood noodles back in the city. It's light and kids can accept it. Suitable for children over four years old; sand-loving kids will want to play all day. 🚄 It takes about half an hour by taxi from Zhongwei Station to Shapotou. There are also tourist buses, but the schedules are fixed, so taking a taxi with kids is more flexible. The sand in Shapotou is fine, so dress your kids in closed-toe sandals or old sneakers. Avoid mesh shoes, as they are difficult to clean once sand gets inside. There are many types of Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day package deals; compare prices on official channels in advance. Buying sandboarding and sheepskin rafting separately is often more cost-effective. For accommodation, choose the area near the Drum Tower in downtown Weiwei. It's convenient to have wormwood noodles and stir-fried noodles in the evening, and half a day is enough to visit Gaomiao the next day. These 8 places are all laid-back. When traveling with kids during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, choosing one place and staying two nights is better than rushing to three attractions. Which one do you want to visit first? When traveling with kids during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, choosing one place and staying two nights is better than rushing to three attractions. Which one do you want to visit first?

The two things I fear most when traveling during the holidays: an empty wallet and being crushed by crowds. I've dug up 8 places I've visited between September and October over the past two years that are low-cost and high-value. If you want to save money during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day, just pick from this list. 01 Linxia | Gansu Let's start with Liujiaxia. From downtown Linxia, 🚄 taking a taxi to the reservoir viewing platform costs about CNY 40-something; it's more cost-effective if you split the fare with a few people. ⏰ The water is calmest before 10:00 AM, perfect for clear photos. Taking a boat to Bingling Temple is the highlight; the boat ticket and admission ticket are the biggest expenses for this trip, but it's worth it. The grottoes at Bingling Temple are carved into the cliff face, and the boardwalk is narrow, so watch your step while walking instead of just focusing on taking photos. ⚠️ Boat schedules are affected by water levels, so call ahead to check before you leave, or you might end up waiting at the dock. For accommodation, choose downtown Linxia; budget hotels are just over CNY 100 a night. In the evening, head to Bafang Shisanxiang to eat hand-grabbed mutton and Hezhou steamed buns; you can get full for about CNY 30 per person. This route is suitable for those who aren't in a rush and are willing to wake up early. 02 Sanming | Fujian You can combine Dajin Lake and Taining Ancient City into one day. ⏰ Take a boat tour of the lake in the morning; the 9:00 AM boat is less crowded, and when the mist rises over the water, it looks like an ink wash painting. The boat ride takes over two hours, so bring a light jacket as it's cool on the lake. In the afternoon, head back to Taining Ancient City; the old houses in the Shangshu Di area are worth a slow stroll, and the admission ticket isn't expensive. 🍜 The Nuangu buns and Biyu rolls in the ancient city cost CNY 3 to CNY 5 each, and you'll be full just eating while walking around. ⚠️ Don't just pick any farmhouse restaurant near the dock that's soliciting customers; the prices are inflated. Walk two streets further in, and the restaurants where locals eat are half the price. Stay at a guesthouse near the ancient city for about CNY 120 a night, and you can continue exploring the next day. 03 Zhenjiang | Jiangsu The joint ticket for Jinshan, Jiaoshan, and Beigu Mountain is more cost-effective than buying individual tickets, but your legs will be dead if you climb all three in one day. My suggestion is to do Jinshan and Beigu Mountain, and save Jiaoshan for next time. ⏰ Go to Beigu Mountain in the evening; the sunset over the river with the iron pagoda makes for great photos. Jurong Maoshan is in another direction and requires a separate day. There are many Taoist temples and stairs on the mountain; if you're traveling with seniors, taking the cable car will save energy. ⚠️ Don't accept incense from vendors at the entrance of Maoshan; there's free incense at the top. 🍜 In the city, try the pot-lid noodles; a bowl costs a dozen yuan or so, and it's perfect with a piece of pork aspic. Stay near Dashikou; it's convenient to take the bus to the three mountains, and it costs around CNY 150 a night. Zhenjiang is suitable for people on a tight budget who want to see river views. 04 Ankang | Shaanxi Qianceng River is in the Qinba Mountains; the water is still cool in September and October, but the forest is starting to change color. ⏰ It's best to go after the rain when the waterfalls are full and the air is filled with the scent of damp wood. The path isn't difficult, just wear non-slip shoes. You'll need to drive towards Hanyin for the Fengyan Ancient Terraced Fields; it's convenient by car. The rice is golden this season, layered across the hillsides. 📍 The viewing platform is by the roadside, parking is free, and arriving half an hour before sunset is perfect. ⚠️ The drive between the two spots is not short, so don't try to force them into the same day. Stay in downtown Ankang; walking along the Han River at night is pleasant, and hotels are just over CNY 100 a night. Eat steamed noodles and hot and sour konjac for about CNY 20 per person. 05 Zhangjiajie | Hunan Wulingyuan, Tianmen Mountain, and the National Forest Park sound like three different places, but they are actually adjacent. Admission tickets are the biggest expense, but there are discounts for students and seniors, so remember to bring your ID. ⏰ Enter the Forest Park at 7:00 AM to avoid tour groups. Queuing for the Tianmen Mountain cable car is the norm; ⚠️ buy time-slot tickets online in advance, as buying on-site might mean waiting until the afternoon. The glass skywalk charges extra for shoe covers—it's just a few yuan, so don't be bothered by it. Stay near the Wulingyuan ticket station; guesthouses are around CNY 150 a night, which saves travel time compared to staying in the city. 🍜 "Sanxiaguo" (three-pot dish) is a local specialty; a pot costs a few dozen yuan and is enough for two people. This is suitable for people with good stamina who want to see enough mountains in one go. 06 Shenyang | Liaoning Beiling Park is most beautiful in autumn, with ginkgo trees turning yellow in mid-to-late October. ⏰ The morning light slants into the forest, making it perfect for portraits without needing edits. The admission ticket is cheap, and local seniors hang out there. The Shenyang Expo Garden is large, so renting a bicycle is easier for exploring; the flowering season is over, but the garden is quiet. The Wugou Jingguang Relic Pagoda and the Beita Falun Temple are not far apart; 📍 the pagoda is over on Tawan Street, so you can see them together on the way, and neither charges admission. ⚠️ The Expo Garden is far from the city center, taking over an hour by subway and bus, so allow enough time. Stay near Zhongjie; eat Laobian dumplings and chicken racks for about CNY 30 per person. Shenyang is suitable for people who want to explore the city and don't want to climb mountains. 07 Lingshui | Hainan Fenjiezhou Island and Nanwan Monkey Island—one for the sea, one for the monkeys. ⏰ Take the first boat to Fenjiezhou Island in the morning; it's less crowded, the water is clear, and you can see fish while snorkeling. Activities on the island are charged separately, so just pick one or two to play; don't buy them all. Take the cross-sea cable car to Nanwan Monkey Island; the monkeys really do steal things. ⚠️ Don't hold plastic bags or food in your hands, and keep your bag zipped up. 🍜 You can have seafood processed at the Xincun Port seafood market, which is cheaper than eating inside the scenic area. Stay in Qingshui Bay or Lingshui County; you can get a nice place for just over CNY 100 a night in the off-season. Hainan hasn't cooled down in September and October, so don't skimp on sunscreen. This is suitable for people who want to play in the water but don't want to deal with the crowds in Sanya. 08 Nyingchi | Tibet Bomi, Basum Lake, the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, plus a section of the Yunnan-Tibet Highway—this route is in its golden season from September to October. ⏰ The reflection on Basum Lake is clearest in the early morning, so it's worth going early. Seeing Namcha Barwa at the Grand Canyon is a matter of luck; the clouds only clear for a few minutes. Hiking in the Gang Spruce Forest in Bomi is comfortable; the altitude isn't too high, so just take it slow. There are many stops along the Yunnan-Tibet Highway; ⚠️ if you're driving, watch out for rockfall sections and don't drive at night. Stay in Bayi Town; guesthouses are over CNY 100 a night, and stone pot chicken costs CNY 60 to CNY 70 per person. This route is suitable for people with plenty of time who can handle long car rides; the budget is mainly spent on transportation. Pick two nearby spots to start with; don't try to do too much. The key to saving money isn't about going to fewer places, but going smartly. Which one do you want to head to first?

Some cities are for power-walking through landmarks, while others are just for slowing down. Three days, no rushing, no forcing yourself to hit every spot, just sleeping in and heading out when you're ready—it's just right. 1️⃣ Xuzhou | Jiangsu Xuzhou is underrated. Yunlong Lake is much bigger than you'd imagine. It's over 10 km around, so don't push yourself to walk the whole thing. ⏰ Enter from the Hunan Road entrance after 4:00 PM. Walk along the east bank to the Su Causeway. The light starts to soften, and the lake surface looks like it's covered in old copper. 📍 There's a set of steps by the water in the middle of the Su Causeway. Sit for a while and watch the locals walking dogs, fishing, and flying kites. It's more comfortable than any observation deck. 🍜 For dinner, head to a mutton restaurant on Hubin Road. A bowl of mutton soup with a zhuangmo (flatbread) costs just over CNY 20—the soup is milky white and the meat is tender. Xuzhou locals eat mutton at the start of the dog days of summer, so visiting in summer actually hits the spot. ⚠️ Yunlong Lake is too big, so don't believe guides that say you can "see it all in two hours." Shared bikes aren't allowed in the core area, so wear comfortable shoes. You can skip the aquarium and cable car and save your money for the mutton soup. 2️⃣ Shiyan | Hubei Most people who come for Wudang Mountain get worn out by the mountain roads. 🚄 Get off at Shiyan East Station. Don't rush straight to the scenic area; stay a night at the foot of the mountain first. ⏰ Take the first sightseeing bus at 6:30 AM the next day to avoid the tour group crowds. 📍 The section from Nanyan Palace to the Golden Summit has steps so steep they'll make you question your life choices. But after the rain, when the clouds and mist rise from the valley and the temples seem to hang off the cliff, it's worth the price of admission. ⚠️ The Golden Summit cable car line is at least an hour long. It's smarter to take the cable car up and walk the ancient divine path down. If your knees aren't great, just take the cable car both ways—don't push it. The small restaurants in the city at the foot of the mountain are more authentic than the ones on the mountain. 🍜 A bowl of sanhe soup—sweet potato noodles with beef balls—is sour and spicy. Drinking it after climbing the mountain brings you back to life. It's perfect for people with average stamina who still want to see real mountains. 3️⃣ Chengdu | Sichuan Don't be greedy with three days around Chengdu. Tiantai Mountain, Qingcheng Mountain–Dujiangyan, Anren Ancient Town, and the Giant Panda Base are in four different directions—pick two and that's enough. ⏰ You must be at the gate of the Giant Panda Base by 7:30 AM. After 9:00 AM, the pandas basically go back to sleep, and you'll only see their backsides. 📍 The Moon Delivery House area is the most crowded, so head to the Juvenile Panda Villa first. Do Qingcheng Mountain and Dujiangyan on the same day. See the Yuzui (Fish Mouth) water diversion project in Dujiangyan in the morning, and Qingcheng Front Mountain in the afternoon. Don't go to the Back Mountain; you won't have enough time. Anren Ancient Town is good for the second day. It takes half a day to really see the Jianchuan Museum Cluster, or two hours if you're just browsing. 🍜 For the pork intestine and blood curd in Anren Ancient Town, find the place in the alley with lots of locals; don't eat on the main street. Tiantai Mountain is great for summer. Firefly season is in April and May; otherwise, it's just a regular hike. ⚠️ Buy your Dujiangyan admission ticket online in advance to avoid waiting in line on-site 4️⃣ Yulin | Shaanxi Yulin is an outlier in northern Shaanxi—a patch of Danxia landform that suddenly appears on the Loess Plateau. 📍 Wave Valley is in Jingbian, a two-hour drive from the city. ⏰ Enter the valley after 3:00 PM when the light hits at an angle, making the textures of the red sandstone look like they were carved by a knife. The Yellow River in Jia County is on the other side. Xianglu Temple hangs on the edge of a cliff with the Yellow River right below. It's windy, so hold onto your hat. Hongshi Gorge is close to the city; go in the evening when the sunset warms the cliff carvings—it's a perfect way to end the day. ⚠️ Some areas of Wave Valley are fenced off for protection, so don't climb over the railings. One footprint on the Danxia landform takes decades to recover. Taxis in Yulin city are cheap, but for Wave Valley, I recommend chartering a car or driving yourself; public transport is a hassle. 🍜 Yulin's Pin Sanxian (a local stew) and mutton noodles are great at any old restaurant you find. It's perfect for people who love unique landscapes and don't mind the travel distance. 5️⃣ Linxia | Gansu Linxia is an overlooked stop next to Lanzhou. 🚄 It's just over an hour from Lanzhou. The water at Liujiaxia Tourist Resort is unrealistically green. Take a boat toward Bingling Temple, and the cliffs on both sides get narrower and narrower. 📍 Bingling Temple World Cultural Heritage Tourist Area: the grottoes are hidden deep in the canyon, requiring a boat ride and then a transfer to a shuttle bus. ⏰ The light hits the western niches in the morning, making them the clearest to see. Special grottoes require a separate reservation, but the regular ones are worth seeing too. On the way back, have a bowl of jiangshui noodles in Yongjing County—it's sour, refreshing, and cuts through the grease. The hand-grabbed mutton and Hezhou steamed buns in Linxia city are cheaper than in Lanzhou. ⚠️ Liujiaxia boat schedules are limited, so check the return time in advance to avoid getting stuck on the other side It's suitable for people interested in grottoes and Yellow River canyons. The pace is slow, and there are few tourists. 6️⃣ Haibei | Qinghai Haibei is the area north of Qinghai Lake. Qilian Mountain, Heihe Grand Canyon, Lenglongling, and Amisong—the names sound far away, but they're actually all connected in one line. ⏰ It's most beautiful in July and August, with rapeseed flowers stretching from Menyuan all the way to Qilian. 📍 Opposite Zhuoer Mountain in Qilian County is Niuxin Mountain. Go in the afternoon when the light cuts the Danxia landforms and wheat fields into blocks of color. Heihe Grand Canyon is great for a road trip, but the roads are narrow and winding, so drive slowly. Lenglongling and Amisong are suitable for hiking enthusiasts; regular tourists can just view them from a distance. ⚠️ The altitude is around 3,000 meters, so don't run or jump, and take fewer showers the first night. The temperature difference between day and night is large, so a windbreaker is a must. 🍜 Qilian's yellow mushrooms and yak yogurt are worth a taste. It's perfect for people who like road trips, snow-capped mountains, and grasslands. Three days is just enough for a small loop. 7️⃣ Lishui | Zhejiang Lishui is Zhejiang's hidden gem. Yunhe Terraces, Jinyun Xiandu, and Qingtian Shimen Cave are in three different directions—visit one each day for three days, and you won't be tired. ⏰ For the sunrise at Yunhe Terraces, arrive at the Jiuqu Yunhuan observation deck by 5:30 AM. When the sea of clouds pours into the terraces, the sound of camera shutters is denser than the birds chirping. 📍 Dinghu Peak in Jinyun Xiandu is only ethereal in the morning mist; if you go at noon, it's just a big rock. Qingtian Shimen Cave is by the Ou River. You take a boat to get in, and there are many cliff inscriptions. It's quiet and uncrowded. 🍜 Jinyun baked cakes are freshly made with preserved vegetable filling. They cost CNY 5 each and are ten times better than the packaged ones. ⚠️ Lishui's attractions are scattered and public transport is slow, so I recommend driving or chartering a car. The flooding period for the terraces is in May and June, which gives the best mirror effect; other seasons offer a different kind of green. 8️⃣ Lhasa | Tibet Don't pack your three days in Lhasa too full. On the first day, don't go anywhere—just soak up the sun, drink sweet tea, and acclimate to the altitude. ⏰ Potala Palace reservation tickets are for specific time slots; if you're late, they're void. 📍 Walk clockwise around Barkhor Street on the outskirts of Jokhang Temple; don't go against the flow. Sit in Jokhang Temple Square in the evening and watch the people performing prostrations—it's more moving than entering the hall. Save Namtso for the third day; it's a full day round trip. ⏰ Leave at 6:00 AM and return in the afternoon. The altitude is 4,700 meters, and the wind is strong enough to blow right through you, so a thick jacket is a must. ⚠️ Negotiate the price before riding a yak for photos by Namtso Lake, not after 🍜 Guangming Gangqiong Sweet Tea House: it's CNY 1 a cup, and you grab your own cup and find a seat. Tibetan noodles with sweet tea is the local breakfast. It's suitable for people who can handle altitude sickness and are willing to slow down. Three days isn't enough to fully understand any city, but it's enough for you to remember a flavor, a road, or an afternoon. Pick one and go.

Popular cities are so crowded it makes you question your sanity, so I dug up 8 lesser-known ones instead. They're uncrowded, easy to explore, and won't break the bank. Pick one for a weekend getaway. 1️⃣ Jinan | Shandong Don't just treat Jinan as a stopover for Mount Tai; the springs alone are worth a full day of exploring. 📍Enter the East Gate of Baotu Spring at 7:00 AM. It's quiet, you can hear the water, and the three springs are bubbling up—ten times better than squeezing against the railings at noon. ⏰ For the best view of the springs in full flow, go two or three days after rain when the water level rises and the effect is completely different. I recommend heading up Thousand Buddha Mountain after 4:00 PM. The steps aren't in the sun, and you'll reach Xingguo Chan Temple just in time for sunset. ⚠️ Don't just take incense from the stalls at the summit; if you take it, you have to pay. On the way down, stop by the north end of Furong Street for a bowl of Tianmo (sweet porridge) and a Youxuan (oil spiral pastry)—you'll be full for just over 10 yuan. It's great for seniors to walk at a leisurely pace; the mountain isn't high, and the cable car is affordable. 2️⃣ Taizhou | Zhejiang Taizhou is one of those places where "attractions are scattered but every one is a winner." Tiantai Mountain is best visited in the morning. The water volume at Shiliang Waterfall depends on the season; ⏰ it's most spectacular after the rains in May or June, but during the dry season, it's just a trickle, so don't set your expectations too high. There's an ancient Sui Dynasty temple in the mountains; admission is free, and incense offerings are voluntary. Save the Linhai Taizhou Prefecture City for the evening. 📍Walk along Ziyang Street from Xingshan Gate to Longxing Temple, where the bluestone slabs have been polished smooth by footsteps. 🍜 Seaweed cakes are best when freshly baked; the crust gets soft once they cool down. I advise going to Shenxianju early, as the cable car queue can be soul-crushing. ⚠️ Enter through the South Gate and exit through the North Gate to complete the loop; don't return the way you came. Choose accommodation in the Linhai old town so you can step out to see the night view of the city walls. 3️⃣ Huanggang | Hubei In the Dabie Mountains area, Luotian Tiantangzhai and Macheng Guifeng Mountain are the two main draws, but I recommend Tiantangzhai more. ⏰ The azaleas at Guifeng Mountain don't bloom until late April; a week earlier, they're all just buds. The climb to the main peak of Tiantangzhai is significant, so 📍take the scenic shuttle to the lower cable car station before heading up to save half the effort. There's a large temperature difference in the mountains, so be sure to bring a light jacket. Guifeng Mountain is incredibly crowded during peak season, and you could wait 2 hours for the cable car. ⚠️ If you want peace and quiet, take the West Gate hiking trail; the scenery is just as good and it's free. 🍜 The chestnut braised chicken at the local farmhouses at the foot of the mountain is a signature dish, costing about 50–60 yuan per person. This area is best for self-driving; public transport transfers are too much of a hassle. If you're bringing kids, prioritize Tiantangzhai as the paths are gentler. 4️⃣ Nantong | Jiangsu Nantong's main feature is the Hao River loop, which winds through the city—a rare sight in Jiangsu. ⏰ After 6:00 PM, the riverside walkway lights up. 📍Walk from Haoxi Academy towards the Nantong Museum; you'll pass bridges, pagodas, and old buildings, and it's so quiet you won't believe you're in the city center. You can take a boat tour for the night view, but it's more photogenic during the day. The museum itself is worth entering; it's one of the earliest museums in China. It's free but requires a reservation. ⚠️ It's closed on Mondays, so don't plan your trip for that day. 🍜 Nearby long-established shops serve clam cakes and "jumping noodles," which locals eat for breakfast. Choose accommodation by the Hao River for convenient evening strolls. It's great for couples and families with kids—the pace is slow, and there's no need to rush. 5️⃣ Mudanjiang | Heilongjiang Jingpo Lake is for escaping the summer heat and seeing ice waterfalls in winter—it has two faces throughout the year. ⏰ It's most comfortable to visit in July or August; when the cool breeze blows across the lake, it's only in the low 20s here while the city is 30 degrees. 📍Diaoshuilou Waterfall has plenty of water in the morning, but the light is backlit in the afternoon. Take a boat tour of the lake to see Maogong Mountain, but it's only worth the price if the weather is good. ⚠️ The scenic area is huge, so don't expect to walk the whole thing—buy the scenic shuttle ticket. If you come in winter, you're here for the ice waterfalls and winter fishing, but it's minus 20–30 degrees, so don't push it if you don't have the right gear. 🍜 Find a Korean-style restaurant in the city; the cold noodles and barbecue are half the price of those in the scenic area. Choose accommodation near Mudanjiang Station for convenient transfers to Jingpo Lake. 6️⃣ Yuncheng | Shanxi Yuncheng Salt Lake is one of those places that "looks average from afar but is stunning up close." ⏰ After high temperatures in summer, the algae change color, spreading out in pinks and greens like an overturned palette. 📍Navigate to the Salt Lake Scenic Area observation deck; don't go into the lake to wade, as the salt crust is sharp and can hurt your skin. Coming in winter is a different story; the salt crystals form a vast white expanse that's very photogenic. ⚠️ There's no shade around the salt lake, so a sun hat and sunglasses are a must. Don't go at noon. 🍜 In the city, try the mutton paomo and Wenxi boiled cakes; the people of Yuncheng really know their flour-based foods. Choose accommodation in the city; the salt lake isn't far, just a 20-minute taxi ride. It's great for photography enthusiasts, but there aren't many pure entertainment activities. 7️⃣ Yichun | Jiangxi Here's the honest truth about Mingyue Mountain: the cable car is worth it, but climbing the mountain is just watching people. ⏰ Take the cable car up in the morning, take your time exploring the Yungu Waterfall and Moon Lake, and head down the mountain before 3:00 PM. 📍The cable car has two sections; the view from the middle station to the upper station is the best, so don't look down at your phone. ⚠️ The hot springs in Wentang Town at the foot of the mountain are genuine, but hotel prices double during holidays, so book in advance. 🍜 The selenium-rich dishes and stewed chicken in town are worth trying, costing about 70–80 yuan per person. It's perfect for bringing seniors—cable car plus flat paths, and you can rest whenever you get tired. In summer, the mountains are 5–6 degrees cooler than the city, making it a good place to escape the heat. In winter, there's rime ice, but it depends on luck. 8️⃣ Linxia | Gansu Linxia was the biggest surprise of this trip. The water in the Liujiaxia Reservoir is so blue it doesn't look like Northwest China. ⏰ Take a boat to Bingling Temple in the morning; when the sunlight hits the rock walls, the outlines of the Buddha statues are crystal clear. 📍Bingling Temple is a World Heritage site, with grottoes carved along the Yellow River. You get off the boat and walk along a plank road. ⚠️ Boat schedules are affected by water levels, so be sure to call and ask before you set off so you don't wait in vain. Photography is not allowed inside the grottoes, so keep your hands to yourself. 🍜 For hand-grabbed mutton and Hezhou steamed buns in Linxia city, the places where locals are queuing are always the right choice. This area is suitable for people who like culture and self-driving; public transport connections are average, so I recommend chartering a car. Choose accommodation in Linxia city; the conditions are much better than around the scenic area. These eight places are truly uncrowded and truly fun. Jinan and Taizhou are suitable for a first try; save Linxia and Mudanjiang for those willing to put in a bit more effort. Which one do you want to visit first? Let me know in the comments.

When taking parents on a trip, the biggest fears are two things: rushing around too much and too many stairs. I've learned the hard way, but I've also taken elders on some comfortable trips. The 8 places below have a slow pace, steady scenery, and hassle-free dining—perfect for the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day. 01 Chengdu | Sichuan When bringing parents to Chengdu, don't just focus on the crowds at Kuanzhai Alley. I usually arrange a morning visit to the 📍 Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Arrive at the gate before 7:30 AM; the pandas are active, and the crowds haven't built up yet. Parents can watch pandas munching on bamboo for half an hour without moving. In the afternoon, head to Mount Qingcheng—Dujiangyan. The front mountain has gentle steps, suitable for a slow walk. ⏰ It is recommended to enter Dujiangyan after 3:00 PM; the light is soft, and there are half as many people. ⚠️ Don't take seniors to the back mountain of Mount Qingcheng; the slopes are steep and hard on the knees. Stay in Dujiangyan city center at night; it saves an hour of driving compared to returning to Chengdu. 🍜 For dinner, order a ginkgo stewed chicken; the soup is clear and not greasy, making it easy for elders to eat. Save Tiantai Mountain and Anren Ancient Town for the second day. The old mansion complex in Anren is suitable for those who like a quiet stroll. 02 Lu'an | Anhui Many people pass through Lu'an but don't stop. The waterfall group at Tiantangzhai still has steady water flow in autumn, and walking along the boardwalk, the slope is friendly for seniors. ⏰ Enter the mountain at 9:00 AM; the fog hasn't cleared yet, and photos will have depth. Wanfo Lake is suitable for the afternoon; take a boat to see the islands, and the breeze makes it very relaxing. 🚄 It takes about 40 minutes to take a taxi from Lu'an Station to Wanfo Lake. It is recommended to charter a car for the round trip, as bus schedules are infrequent. ⚠️ Dining on Tiantangzhai mountain is expensive and average; bring your own bread and water. For accommodation, choose a homestay in Wanfo Lake Town; it's quiet at night, and you can see the fog on the lake in the morning. Remember to book tickets through official channels in advance during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day; queuing on-site will waste a whole morning. 03 Laibin | Guangxi The Jinxiu area in Laibin is the kind of place where you'll want to stay for an extra two days after visiting. For the sea of clouds at Panwangjie in Dayao Mountain, ⏰ arriving at the viewing platform at 6:30 AM is the safest bet; once the sun comes out, the clouds disperse. Jinxiu Lotus Mountain is suitable for climbing in the afternoon. The stone steps are well-maintained, so parents can walk and rest as they go without any issues. 📍 The Yao village at the foot of the mountain has oil tea, which is salty and fragrant—a bowl will warm your stomach. 🚄 It's about a two-hour drive from Laibin North Station to Jinxiu; self-driving or chartering a car is recommended. ⚠️ The temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains is large; bring a light jacket even in October. Stay in Jinxiu County; dining and accommodation are convenient, and you can stroll through the Yao ethnic style street at night. This route doesn't have many people, making it suitable for families who want to avoid the crowds. 04 Changji | Xinjiang The Changji route has a wide range of scenery, but the pace can be slowed down. The wheat fields in Jiangbulake have just been harvested at the end of September; golden haystacks paired with snow-capped mountains make for great photos for parents. ⏰ The light is slanted after 4:00 PM, which is the most photogenic. For Tianshan Tianchi, it is recommended to take the shuttle bus and cable car to save energy. ⚠️ It's windy by the Tianchi Lake; have hats and scarves ready. Wucaiwan is suitable for the evening; the Yadan landforms have the most intense colors under the setting sun. 🍜 The pilaf and meatball soup in Changji city center are well-received by elders. Stay in Urumqi or Changji city center, and enter Tianshan the next day. Northern Xinjiang cools down quickly during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day; don't worry about the weight of a down jacket—it's worth bringing. 05 Taiyuan | Shanxi Taiyuan is suitable as a transit stop, but also for a separate two-day trip. I always feel the Jinci Museum is worth it every time I go; Song Dynasty architecture plus the Nanlao Spring—parents can understand and appreciate it. ⏰ Go in the morning; there are fewer people and the light is good. To see the grottoes at Tianlong Mountain, the mountain road has many curves; 🚄 it is recommended to take a taxi up, don't make the elders walk. Jinyang Lake Park is suitable for an evening stroll; the lake is wide, and a lap takes just 40 minutes. ⚠️ Don't follow the "guides" soliciting customers outside Jinci; book official guides at the entrance. 🍜 Find a noodle shop in the evening; knife-cut noodles with stir-fried pork are simple and satisfying. Stay in Yingze District; it's convenient to go anywhere, and the combination of subway and taxi is the most worry-free. 06 Dalian | Liaoning The seaside in Dalian is much friendlier to elders than mountain climbing. For the Golden Pebble Beach National Tourist Resort, ⏰ go in the morning; you can go beachcombing when the tide is out, and parents will be happy picking up seashells. Laohutan Ocean Park is suitable for bringing grandchildren along; performance times are fixed, so check the time in advance. Go to Xinghai Square in the evening; it's windy but has a good view, and you can sit down if you get tired of walking. ⚠️ Don't go to Tanglihu Park on weekend afternoons; parking spaces are hard to find. 🍜 Ask about prices before ordering at seaside food stalls, and choose shops with clearly marked prices. Stay in Zhongshan District or near Xinghai, where you can take a walk at night. Dalian is cool during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day; long sleeves and a jacket are standard. 07 Linxia | Gansu The Linxia route has both culture and nature. At Liujiaxia Tourist Resort, take a boat to see the reservoir; the water surface is as wide as the sea. ⏰ Board the boat before 10:00 AM; the light is favorable, and photos won't be backlit. For the Bingling Temple World Cultural Heritage Tourist Area, the grottoes are carved into the cliff face; you can see the Danxia landforms all the way there by boat. ⚠️ It's windy on the boat; bring a windbreaker for your parents. Buy tickets and boat tickets separately, and ask about the package rules in advance. 🍜 Hezhou steamed buns with covered-bowl tea in Linxia city center are light and easy to digest. Stay in Linxia city center and stroll through the Bafang Thirteen Alleys at night; the alleys are quiet, suitable for a slow walk. This route has low tourist density, so you won't be stuck in crowds during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day. 08 Songyuan | Jilin Chagan Lake in Songyuan is just right for a visit in autumn when the fish are plump. ⏰ Go to the lakeside in the morning to watch the fishing performance; parents are very interested in such scenes. Jinchan Island is suitable for an afternoon stroll; there are many trees on the island, making it cool to walk around. 🚄 It takes about an hour to drive from Songyuan Station to Chagan Lake; chartering a car is recommended. ⚠️ The wind by the lake is strong; wear a thick jacket in October. 🍜 The full-fish feast is a specialty, but order according to the number of people; don't be persuaded to order too much. Stay in Songyuan city center; conditions are better than by the lake. There are activities at Chagan Lake during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day; it's crowded but not packed, and you can control the pace yourself. This route is suitable for families who like quiet and don't like climbing mountains. When taking parents out, don't be too ambitious. One main attraction a day, with the rest of the time for eating, walking, and relaxing, is better than rushing around. Among these 8 places, Chengdu and Dalian are the most worry-free, while Linxia and Songyuan are the quietest. Which one do you plan to visit first?

Back-to-school season means empty wallets, but with flight and hotel prices dropping in September, you can have a blast in these eight cities on a 300-yuan budget. Don't argue—you're right, but I'm sharing the itinerary anyway. 1️⃣ Xiangyang | Hubei The ancient city wall is free, and catching a breeze by the Han River costs nothing. ⏰ Head to the city wall after 4:00 PM; the light is soft, and you won't be squinting in photos. 📍 Try the brown sugar pancake at the shop at the end of North Street. It's 2 yuan each—eat it while it's hot. Student tickets for Ancient Longzhong are half-price. Take the scenic shuttle to the top when you enter, then stroll your way down to save energy. ⚠️ Don't buy the "Three Kingdoms Set Meal" at the scenic area entrance; it's expensive and tastes bad. Go back to North Street for a bowl of beef noodles for just 15 yuan. 🚄 It takes about 20 minutes by bus from Xiangyang Station to the ancient city. Stay at a hostel by the river in Fancheng for 50 yuan a night and enjoy the night view. If you're not super fit, just stick to the core area of Ancient Longzhong and don't push yourself on the back mountain. 2️⃣ Linxia | Gansu The water at Liujiaxia is green, and the Buddhas at Bingling Temple are serene. ⏰ Arrive at the Liujiaxia pier before 8:00 AM to catch the large boat to Bingling Temple. The round-trip ticket plus admission is less than 100 yuan for students. 📍 The special caves at Bingling Temple cost extra, but the Tang Dynasty Buddha statues in the regular caves are enough to keep you occupied for half a day. 🍜 A bowl of Hezhou buns and a cup of covered-bowl tea in downtown Linxia will fill you up for 20 yuan. ⚠️ Speedboats cost twice as much as the large boat but save you two hours. If you get seasick, choose the large boat. 🚄 It's a 40-minute high-speed train ride from Lanzhou. Stay in downtown Linxia, not at the scenic area. Spend the afternoon exploring the Baxi Thirteen Alleys in the city center for free. Perfect for those who want to see something authentic without waiting in line. 3️⃣ Songyuan | Jilin There's no winter fishing in Chagan Lake in September, but the fish are still plump. ⏰ Head to the lakeside in the evening to wait for the sunset. It's windy, so bring a jacket. 📍 You need to take a boat to reach Jinchan Island. Student discounts are available for boat tickets. There's just one observation deck on the island, which you can see in half an hour. 🍜 The stewed bighead carp at the lakeside fishing village costs a little over 100 yuan for a small portion, which is just right for three people. ⚠️ Don't fall for the "wild fish" hype; the price doubles, but the taste is about the same. 🚄 A taxi from Songyuan Station to Chagan Lake costs about 40 yuan; carpooling is more cost-effective. Stay at a budget hotel in the city for 120 yuan a night. Perfect for those who want to eat fish and enjoy the water without rushing between attractions. 4️⃣ Quzhou | Zhejiang Jianglang Mountain offers free admission from Monday to Friday—remember to book in advance. ⏰ Enter the mountain at 7:00 AM to climb the "Thread of Sky" without waiting in line. It gets crowded later. 📍 Nianbadu Ancient Town is more worth a leisurely stroll than Jianglang Mountain; you can wander into the old houses freely. 🍜 At the Shuitingmen Night Market in downtown Quzhou, the "ge dai bing" (pocket pancake) is 5 yuan each and packs a real spicy punch. ⚠️ The Gen Palace Buddha Kingdom is great for woodcarving fans, but regular tourists might find it dull. Admission isn't cheap, so think it over before you go. 🚄 There's a tourist bus from Quzhou Station directly to Jianglang Mountain for 15 yuan. Stay at a hostel near Shuitingmen for 60 yuan. Wear non-slip shoes for hiking; the stone steps get very slippery when wet. 5️⃣ Chongqing Student tickets for the Dazu Rock Carvings are 50 yuan, Jinyun Mountain is 15 yuan, and Wulong Karst is a bit pricier but worth it. ⏰ Get to Dazu as soon as it opens at 8:30 AM to avoid tour groups. 📍 Stand far back to see the full view of the Reclining Buddha wall at Baoding Mountain. 🍜 Chongqing noodles are 7 yuan for two taels. Don't eat at Hongyadong; head into the residential buildings instead. ⚠️ Take a cruise from Chaotianmen for the Yangtze Three Gorges; a short trip is enough, as the full journey is too expensive. 🚄 You can reach Dazu and Wulong by subway and bus from the city, but it takes time. Stay at a hostel near Jiefangbei for 50 yuan. I recommend staying one night in Wulong; a round trip in one day is too rushed. Perfect for those who are fit and don't mind climbing hills. 6️⃣ Beijing The Forbidden City is 60 yuan, the Summer Palace is 30 yuan, the Temple of Heaven combo ticket is 34 yuan, and Beihai Park is 10 yuan. Students get half-price on everything. ⏰ Rush to the Forbidden City as soon as it opens at 8:30 AM. Walk the central axis first, then turn to the East and West Six Palaces. 📍 The light at the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests in the Temple of Heaven is best at 4:00 PM after the tour groups have left. 🍜 After exiting the North Gate of Beihai Park, grab some pea flour cake at Huguosi Snacks for 8 yuan. ⚠️ The Forbidden City is closed on Mondays. You must book all attractions seven days in advance—don't wait until the last minute. 🚄 The subway is the most reliable way to get around; get a transit card. Stay at a hostel outside the Second Ring Road for 80 yuan. Enter the Summer Palace from the North Palace Gate and hike over the mountain to Kunming Lake for a less strenuous route. 7️⃣ Lingshui | Hainan Student tickets for Fenjiezhou Island are 120 yuan, including the boat ticket. Take the cable car at Nanwan Monkey Island to see the Danjia fishing rafts. ⏰ Take the first boat to Fenjiezhou Island in the morning for fewer crowds and clearer water. 📍 The view while crossing the sea on the Monkey Island cable car is better than the monkeys on the island. 🍜 A bowl of Lingshui sour noodles is 10 yuan—add some yellow lantern chili sauce. ⚠️ Don't carry plastic bags on Monkey Island; the monkeys really will snatch them. 🚄 It's a 20-minute high-speed train ride from Sanya. Staying in Lingshui County is half the price of staying by the beach. September is the tail end of typhoon season, so check the weather before you leave. Perfect for those who want to play in the water but find Sanya too expensive. 8️⃣ Weinan | Shaanxi Peak season admission for Mount Hua is 160 yuan, with half-price for students; cable cars are extra. ⏰ Start your night hike from Yuquan Temple at 10:00 PM to catch the sunrise at East Peak at 5:00 AM. 📍 The Plank Walk in the Sky costs an extra 30 yuan and has a wait time of at least two hours. If you're afraid of heights, just skip it. 🍜 The "Big Knife" noodles at the foot of Mount Hua are 15 yuan—eat a bowl before you climb to stay full. ⚠️ Bring enough water for the night hike; bottled water on the mountain costs 10 yuan. 🚄 Take a taxi from Huashan North High-Speed Railway Station to the visitor center for 10 yuan. Stay at a guesthouse at the foot of the mountain for 80 yuan. If you're not very fit, take the West Peak cable car up and the North Peak one down—don't push yourself. Travel in September: save money, but don't compromise on the experience. Pick one of these eight places to go first, and tell me which one was the most worth it when you get back.

Where to take the kids for National Day? 8 budget-friendly small cities tested and approved 01 Nanyang | Henan Taking the kids to Laojieling in Funiu Mountain, Xixia. The easiest way is to take the cable car up. Strollers are allowed on the cable car, and once you get off, there is a gentle wooden boardwalk. A three-year-old can walk the whole way without issues. ⏰ Arrive at the cable car station before 9:00 AM to avoid lines. The mountain top is still misty, perfect for soft-focus photos. The Dinosaur Relics Park is a pleasant surprise. Real dinosaur egg fossils are embedded in the rock layers; my kid laid there for 20 minutes and would not leave. 📍 Don't miss the science museum to the right of the park entrance. It is air-conditioned, perfect for escaping the midday sun. 🍜 At the farmhouses at the foot of the mountain, order the stewed chicken with mushrooms and acorn jelly for about CNY 40 per person. Don't eat at the first place by the entrance; walk 200 meters in for better prices and larger portions. ⚠️ The cable car at Laojieling only goes down after 4:00 PM, so do not cut it close heading to the top. Staying in Xixia County is half the price of staying at the scenic area, and it is a 20-minute drive. For families, I recommend choosing a hotel with breakfast to save the trouble of finding food in the morning. 02 Panjin | Liaoning The seepweed in Red Beach starts turning red in September, and it is at its most vibrant during the National Day holiday. The 5.5 km corridor is stroller-friendly, with rest pavilions every kilometer. ⏰ The light is best after 3:00 PM for the most saturated red; morning light is backlit and makes photos look gray. 📍 The rice paddy art viewing platform in the middle of the corridor is worth a stop. From the top, you can see the pattern formed by the red beach and golden rice paddies. My kid was more interested in the little crabs in the rice paddies than the scenery, so remember to bring a small bucket. 🍜 The entrance sells river crabs and cattail shoot dumplings. River crabs are sold by the piece; prices fluctuate during the holiday, so ask before you pick. ⚠️ There are no restaurants in the corridor, so bring water and snacks; kids will not wait until the exit if they get hungry. Stay in downtown Panjin; chain hotels are just over CNY 200. Go to Xinglongtai Pedestrian Street for barbecue in the evening; the small Panjin skewers are bite-sized and kid-friendly. 03 Wenshan | Yunnan The best family-friendly activity in Puzhehei is taking a willow-leaf boat. The boatmen are steady, and the 1.5-hour trip lets kids reach out and touch the lotus leaves. ⏰ Take the first boat at 8:00 AM for calm water and clear reflections; tour groups crowd in after 10:00 AM. 📍 After getting off at Qinglong Mountain Pier, climb the stairs to the viewing platform. It takes 20 minutes to reach the top for a view of the entire lake area and karst peaks. The stairs are not steep; a five-year-old can climb them easily. ⚠️ Boat tickets and admission tickets are sold separately. Book in advance through official channels to avoid standing in the sun in line. 🍜 In Xianrendong Village, try the lotus leaf omelet and sour fish soup for about CNY 50 per person. There are many homestays in the village; choose the row by the lake to hear the frogs at night. For families, I recommend staying in Xianrendong Village to avoid rushing. Rent a small electric scooter in the afternoon to ride around the lake; the breeze is refreshing. If the season is right, you might catch the tail end of the lotus flowers, depending on that year's bloom. 04 Guiyang | Guizhou Guiyang is the coolest city on this trip; you will need a light jacket in the evenings in September. Take a boat into the caves at Tianhetan; my kid spent the whole time looking up at the stalactites. The cave is a constant 18°C, perfect for escaping the heat. ⏰ The light shines into the cave entrance in the morning, making it the best time for photos. Qingyan Ancient Town is best visited in the afternoon. 📍 Enter from the South Gate, try the braised pig trotters and rose candy, then stroll toward the North Gate. The stone roads in the ancient town are a bit bumpy for strollers, so a baby carrier is easier. ⚠️ There are many silver shops in the ancient town with inflated prices; just look, do not buy. Gaopo Yunding Grassland is far from the city, a 1.5-hour drive. Choose a sunny day; it is too windy for kids on cloudy days. You can go horseback riding on the grassland for CNY 50 a lap; agree on the price first. Huaxi Park is a local spot for kids; it is free, and you can feed fish and pigeons by the lake. 🍜 Try the Huaxi beef noodles at the park entrance for CNY 12 a bowl, and add some kimchi. Stay near Huaguoyuan or Penshuichi for convenient subway access and plenty of dining options. 05 Manzhouli | Inner Mongolia The Matryoshka Scenic Area in Manzhouli is a paradise for kids but a test for your wallet. The Matryoshka Hotel looks stunning, but prices triple during National Day. Staying one night for the experience is fine, but two nights is not necessary. ⚠️ Amusement rides inside the scenic area are charged separately; grab a map at the entrance and circle the free areas. 📍 The Russian circus at Matryoshka Square is worth seeing; buy tickets a day in advance and choose front-row seats. My kid was mesmerized by the bear taming and trapeze acts. ⏰ Go to Beihu Park at dusk to watch the sunset; the reflection of the Matryoshka Hotel in the lake is ten times more beautiful than during the day. 🍜 Eat Russian-style food on Zhongsu Golden Street; kids usually like the borscht and pot-stewed beef. Street vendors sell Russian chocolate and matryoshka dolls, which are cheaper than inside the scenic area. Remember to bring your passport; you can get a temporary pass at the National Gate Scenic Area to visit the China-Russia Border Trade Zone. It is windy at night, so bring a windbreaker for the kids. 06 Linxia | Gansu The best way to experience Liujiaxia is by boat to see Bingling Temple. The speedboat round trip takes three hours; my kid was so excited on the boat, and the stone forests on both banks look like castles. ⏰ Depart before 10:00 AM; the waves get rough in the afternoon, and the boat will be bumpy. 📍 You need to buy separate tickets for the special caves at Bingling Temple. Seeing the regular caves is enough for kids, and the guides are engaging. The Buddha statues at Bingling Temple are on the cliff face, and my kid spent a long time looking up at them. ⚠️ No photos inside the caves; tell the kids in advance. The stairs are narrow, so hold their hands. 🍜 In downtown Linxia, try the hand-grabbed lamb and Hezhou steamed buns for about CNY 40 per person. The Bafang Thirteen Alleys look beautiful when lit up at night, and you can buy sweet fermented oats and yogurt in the alleys. Stay in downtown Linxia; it is a one-hour drive to Liujiaxia. For families, I recommend chartering a car; public transport transfers are too much of a hassle. It is already cool in Linxia in September, so bring a fleece jacket for the mornings and evenings. 07 Qiqihar | Heilongjiang Seeing the red-crowned cranes at Zhalong is the most worthwhile stop on this trip. The cranes are released at fixed times every day, and watching the flock fly down from the hillside left my kid stunned. ⏰ There are shows at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM; arrive half an hour early to get a front-row spot. 📍 The crane release area is at the very back of the scenic area; take the electric cart in, as it is a 40-minute walk. ⚠️ There are many mosquitoes in the Zhalong Wetlands, so dress kids in long pants and use mosquito repellent. It is already cold in Qiqihar during National Day, so a down jacket is not an exaggeration. 🍜 Eat Qiqihar barbecue in the city; the marinated meat and sauerkraut are the soul of the dish. Choose a restaurant with private rooms so you can grill at your own pace. You can eat your fill for CNY 60 per person. Stay in Longsha District, which is close to both Zhalong and the train station. Go for a walk in Longsha Park in the evening; it is free, and there are swans and ducks by the lake. The key to not tiring out the kids is to head back right after the crane release; do not force them to keep walking around the wetlands. 08 Weifang | Shandong Qingzhou Ancient Town is the final stop of this trip, where the pace slows down. Entry to the ancient town is free; Ouyuan Garden and the Examination Hall charge separate fees, but the free areas are enough for kids. ⏰ After 5:00 PM, the tour groups leave, the stone roads quiet down, and kids can run around freely. 📍 Buy the honey-glazed pastries and peach-shaped buns at Longsheng Pastry Shop on Ouyuan Street; kids love them. The pan-fried buns at the old locust tree are worth the wait, at CNY 2 each. ⚠️ Some of the reconstructed attractions in the ancient town are overpriced; check reviews before entering. The new Qingzhou Museum is a hidden gem; it is free with a reservation, and even kids can enjoy the Longxing Temple Buddha statue exhibition hall. ⏰ Closed on Mondays, so do not make a wasted trip. 🍜 In downtown Weifang, try the Chaotian pot and meat-filled baked buns for about CNY 25 per person. Stay at a homestay near Qingzhou Ancient Town for just over CNY 100 a night and wake up to birds chirping. For families, I recommend spending half a day on the ancient town and museum, then taking the cable car up Yunmen Mountain in the afternoon; the mountain is not high, and kids can climb it themselves. These eight places are less crowded and cheaper than popular cities for the National Day holiday. I highly recommend Zhalong and Puzhehei; my kid talked about them for half a month after we got back. Just pick one and get started.

Are 2 days on a National Day weekend enough? 8️⃣ small cities that don't require taking leave 01 Dali | Yunnan Don't be greedy with 2 days in Dali. I suggest focusing only on the west shore of Erhai Lake and saving the east shore for next time. ⏰ Arrive at Xizhou Ancient Town before 7 AM. The alleys are empty, and the sunlight hits the earthen walls at an angle, looking ten times better than at noon. Buy Xizhou baba flatbread fresh from the oven, one sweet and one savory. Don't buy from the first shop on the main street; walk deeper into the alleys where the price is the same but the fillings are more generous. Visit the Chongsheng Temple and Three Pagodas Cultural Tourism Area in the afternoon. The light at the Reflection Pond is softer after 3 PM. ⚠️ Ticket and reservation rules are subject to the official announcements of the day. Don't trust the "skip the line" touts on the roadside. Stay near Caicun Village or Longkan Pier at night for an easy sunrise the next morning. Nanzhao Customs Island is optional. The boat ride has long queues, and the island is heavily commercialized. If you only have 2 days, I suggest spending your time cycling along the Erhai Lake Ecological Corridor instead. 📍 The stretch from Longkan Pier to Caicun Village has few people and great views, perfect for couples and families with elderly members. 🚄 A taxi from Dali Station to the ancient town takes about 40 minutes. Don't take unlicensed taxis. 02 Zaozhuang | Shandong Taierzhuang Ancient City is worth staying one night. There are many tour groups during the day, but once the lights come on at night, the whole city feels like it's switched channels. ⏰ Enter the city after 4 PM. First, stroll along the main street by the canal. At 6:30 PM, take a rowboat ride; the boatwomen sing folk tunes, and this experience is more interesting than browsing shops during the day. 🍜 Don't eat on the main street of the ancient city; it's expensive and mediocre. Exit through the East Gate and head north to find the spicy chicken and vegetable pancakes that locals eat. 30 yuan per person gets you a satisfying meal. ⚠️ Inn prices inside the ancient city fluctuate significantly on weekends. Book in advance; don't wait until you arrive. Families with kids will enjoy the boat ride and the molten iron fireworks show. If the elderly can't walk far, take the sightseeing cart. 📍 Enter through the West Gate and exit through the East Gate to avoid backtracking. If you only want photos, the ancient city is nearly empty at 7 AM and produces better shots than at night. The overall pace is slow, and 2 days is just right — no need to take leave. 03 Huangnan | Qinghai Kanbula is perfect for a National Day visit. ⏰ Arrive before 10 AM when the light hits the water and the Danxia landforms with the most saturated colors. In the afternoon, the backlighting makes photos look gray. ⚠️ Some sections of the scenic area are at high altitudes. Walk slowly with the elderly and children; no running or jumping. 🚄 It takes about 2 hours to drive from Xining. The road conditions are good, but there are many curves. Take motion sickness medication in advance if you're prone to it. 📍 Kanbula has several viewing platforms. The innermost one offers the widest view, so don't linger too long at the first one. 🍜 Head back to Jianzha County for meals. The options inside the scenic area are limited and pricey. If you enjoy photography, bring a telephoto lens — the compression effect is striking. Two days is just right to combine with Xining, no leave needed. Overall, it's great for self-drivers and photography enthusiasts. 04 Linxia | Gansu Liujiaxia and Bingling Temple can be done in one day. ⏰ Arrive at the Liujiaxia Tourism Resort at 8 AM and take a boat to Bingling Temple. The water is calm and the reflections are clear. The boat ride takes about an hour. Bring a jacket — it's windy on the water. 📍 At the Bingling Temple World Cultural Heritage Tourism Area, the grottoes are carved into the cliff face. The plank paths are narrow, and queues form during peak season. ⚠️ Tickets and boat tickets are purchased separately. Check official announcements in advance and don't be fooled by touts at the dock. Even if you're not particularly interested in grottoes, the boat ride with views of the Danxia formations on both banks is worth the ticket price. 🍜 Return to Linxia city for hand-grabbed lamb and Hezhou buns. Look for established restaurants; don't eat at the scenic area entrance. The 2-day pace is a bit tight, suitable for physically fit young people. If you're bringing kids, keep a close eye on them on the boat — the deck is slippery. Temperatures drop quickly after the first half of National Day, so a jacket is a must. 05 Yinchuan | Ningxia For 2 days in Yinchuan, here's my suggested itinerary. ⏰ Day 1 morning: Mingcui Lake National Wetland Park. The reeds are turning yellow and migratory birds are abundant — bring binoculars. Afternoon: Helan Mountain Rock Art. The carvings are clearest when the sun is at an angle. ⚠️ Don't touch the rock art or step over the protective barriers. Day 2: Visit Shuidonggou Tourism Area in Lingwu. The hidden soldier caves and canyon landforms are distinctive. In the afternoon, visit the Western Xia Imperial Tombs. The mausoleums stand on the wilderness and are most atmospheric at dusk. 📍 The museum at the Western Xia Imperial Tombs is worth seeing. View the exhibits first, then visit the tombs — you'll understand much more. 🍜 For food, look for small shops in residential areas for hand-grabbed lamb and lamb offal stew. Don't eat near the scenic areas. 🚄 Taxis from downtown Yinchuan to the attractions are affordable, but Shuidonggou is farther out, so I recommend hiring a car or self-driving. Two days is enough — no leave needed. Suitable for history buffs and families with kids. 06 Xiamen | Fujian I suggest you get to Gulangyu early. ⏰ Take the first ferry to the island before 8 AM. Few people, quiet alleys. ⚠️ Book ferry tickets in advance through official channels. Don't trust the "ticket agents" near the dock. Accommodation on the island is expensive and damp. I recommend staying on Xiamen's main island and doing a day trip. The Railway Culture Park is great for an evening stroll, with bougainvillea in full bloom. 📍 Enter through the South Gate of Xiamen Botanical Garden, explore the garden, and then walk along the Railway Culture Park — no backtracking needed. Visit Nanputuo Temple in the morning. Buy 2 boxes of vegetarian pastries — not at the entrance, but inside the temple. 🍜 For satay noodles and oyster omelets, look for established shops near the Eighth Market. The 2-day itinerary suits couples and friends. For those with elderly companions, Gulangyu has many slopes, so wear comfortable shoes. National Day is crowded, so check official announcements for all reservations in advance. 07 Taizhou | Jiangsu Qinhu Lake is for people who want to avoid the crowds. ⏰ Go in the morning and take a boat into the wetland. The reeds and metasequoia trees stand in the water, peaceful and quiet. During National Day, there are far fewer people here than at popular spots in southern Jiangsu, making for a comfortable experience. 🍜 "Qinhu Lake Eight Delicacies" is the signature dish, but restaurant prices inside the scenic area are on the high side. I suggest leaving the scenic area and eating in Jiangyan's urban district instead. Look for local eateries for fish cakes and shrimp balls — honest and satisfying. 📍 There's a stretch of road from the Qinhu Lake Wetland Park entrance to the dock. Taking the electric cart saves energy and is suitable for those with elderly companions. ⚠️ Don't go too late in the afternoon. Boat schedules have time limits; refer to the official announcements of the day. Spend 2 days exploring Taizhou's old town as well — start the morning with a bowl of fish soup noodles and stroll through the old streets at night. Suitable for family trips and budget travel. No leave needed, and the pace is relaxed. 08 Shannan | Tibet For Yamdrok Lake, check the weather before going during National Day. ⏰ Depart in the morning and arrive before noon. When clouds are sparse, the lake water is a brilliant, translucent blue. In the afternoon, winds pick up and the weather can change. ⚠️ The altitude is high. Don't get excited and run or jump. Bring oxygen canisters and sunscreen. Sunglasses are a must. 🚄 It takes about 2 hours to drive from Lhasa. The mountain roads have many curves, so I recommend hiring a local driver. 📍 The viewing platform at Kamba La Pass is crowded. Drive a bit further down for a quieter photo spot. Don't litter by the lake, and don't step on the prayer flags. 🍜 Head back to Lhasa for meals; options by the lake are limited. If you only have a weekend, flying to Lhasa plus a chartered car for 2 days is tight but doable. Suitable for those in good health with high-altitude experience. If it's your first time at high altitude, I strongly suggest adding an extra day to acclimatize — don't push yourself. The scenery is worth every penny.

As autumn arrives at Hongyuan, the morning is lush and green, with the lake merging into the sky. Established in 1958, Hongyuan is a comprehensive park located at No. 2 Hongyuan Road, Linxia City, Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province. It is a park primarily featuring garden landscapes and classical architecture, showcasing a rich ethnic character. With "red" as its signature theme, Hongyuan boasts many beautiful attractions and facilities, such as the "Hongyuan Archway" and the "Lake Pavilion." The Hongyuan Archway is the park's landmark structure. Its architectural style resembles that of the Forbidden City in Beijing, featuring a blue plaque with red characters and a magnificent presence. The Lake Pavilion is a small pavilion surrounded by the lake, offering beautiful scenery. In addition to these attractions, Hongyuan offers many other facilities and activities. For example, the park has various amusement rides for visitors to enjoy, such as a carousel and bumper cars. Furthermore, there are shops within the park where visitors can purchase souvenirs. In short, Hongyuan is a beautiful and interesting park. Whether you are a tourist or a local resident, you can spend a pleasant time here.

What’s the scariest part of traveling with kids? It’s not the money; it’s the whole family getting so exhausted that everyone snaps at each other. I’ve personally tested these 4 places. They have a slow pace, easy walking paths, fun activities for kids, and a chance for adults to catch their breath. 01 Lianyungang | Jiangsu Don't rush to Yunu Peak as soon as you enter Huaguoshan. If you have kids, ⏰ take the scenic shuttle bus up the mountain before 8:00 AM. Head to the Water Curtain Cave area first; there are lots of monkeys, and kids will be mesmerized. For lunch, have a bowl of cold jelly noodles at the foot of the mountain. 📍 There's an old shop in Yanhe Lane; it's CNY 5 a bowl and kid-friendly. Liandao is perfect for the afternoon. 🚄 It costs about CNY 40 to take a taxi from the city center directly to Dashawan Beach. The sand isn't very fine, but the gentle slope makes it safe for young kids to splash around. ⏰ The light is perfect after 5:00 PM—not too sunny, and great for photos. ⚠️ Don't buy sand toys at the entrance; they cost twice as much. Buy them at a supermarket beforehand. For elementary school kids and older, you can add Yuwan; stream trekking and splashing around is more fun than the beach. A 2-day, 1-night trip is just right—no need to rush. 02 Hangzhou | Zhejiang For Hangzhou, my top choice for kids is Xixi. West Lake is too crowded, and it's impossible to push a stroller. Take a sculling boat in Xixi National Wetland Park; kids can stay quiet for half an hour watching water birds. ⏰ Arrive at the Zhoujiacun entrance before 9:00 AM to avoid crowds and boat queues. The China Umbrella Museum is near Gongchen Bridge and is free. ⚠️ It's closed on Mondays. You can paint umbrella covers inside, which elementary school kids love. After leaving, walk along Qiaoxi Zhijie Street; 📍 the Ding Sheng cake next to Lao Kaixin Teahouse is CNY 3 each and a hit with kids. Visit Prince Bay Park in the spring; when the tulips bloom in March, it looks like an overturned palette. It's great for photos, but pushing a stroller is tough due to the gravel paths. For younger kids, I recommend Liulang Wenying by West Lake—it's flat and great for running around. 03 Hefei | Anhui Sanhe Ancient Town is an hour's drive from the city. Don't go on weekends; it's packed. ⏰ Arrive on a weekday morning to walk the bluestone paths freely. The ancient town is small and can be explored in 2 hours, so it's not tiring for seniors or kids. For food, 📍 try the rice dumplings in Yiren Lane; they're freshly fried and CNY 2 each. 🍜 Also, try the Sanhe stir-fry—river shrimp with dried bean curd—kids will eat two bowls of rice with it. ⚠️ Don't take the boat tour; it's CNY 60 per person, the river route is short, and it ends in 10 minutes—not worth it. Elementary school kids can visit the Former Residence of Yang Chen-Ning; the stories are simple enough for them to understand. For younger kids, just feed the fish by the river with some bread. Half a day is enough, leaving time for a nap back in the city in the afternoon. 04 Linxia | Gansu Liujiaxia is better for older kids. 🚄 It's over an hour from Lanzhou. Take a boat from the reservoir to Bingling Temple; ⏰ the morning trips have better light, making the grottoes easier to see. The Buddha statues at Bingling Temple are on the cliff face; middle and high school students will be impressed, but elementary school kids might find it boring. Younger kids can just play in the Liujiaxia Resort area. 📍 There's a bike path on Taiji Island; rent a family bike and ride along the Yellow River—it's windy but pleasant. 🍜 For lunch, have a bowl of Hezhou Lao Chao; the noodles are thick and easy for kids to chew. ⚠️ Book Bingling Temple boat tickets in advance; they often sell out on-site. I recommend going in summer—it's cool in the morning and evening but sunny at noon, so ⏰ plan outdoor activities for after 4:00 PM. Suitable for ages 7 and up; younger kids won't sit still on the boat. 05 Xing'an League | Inner Mongolia Arxan National Forest Park is great for keeping cool with kids. It's just over 20°C in summer, so ⏰ wear a jacket when entering the park in the morning. The hike to Tuofengling Heavenly Lake doesn't have much elevation gain; elementary school kids can walk it themselves, but you'll need to carry younger ones for a bit. 📍 The Bu Dong River section is the most photogenic; there are cows by the river, which kids love. 🍜 There isn't much food in the scenic area, so bring your own self-heating rice meals. ⚠️ Don't buy those "wild mushrooms" at the entrance; if you don't recognize them, don't touch them. Suitable for ages 6 and up. If they're too young, the shuttle bus ride is bumpy and kids might get motion sickness. A 2-day trip is best; stay inside the scenic area to save travel time. It's even more beautiful in autumn when the forest is ablaze with color. 06 Tai'an | Shandong For Mount Tai with kids, my advice is don't try to hike the whole way. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Tai'an Station, take a taxi to Tianwai Village, take the scenic shuttle to Zhongtianmen, and then take the cable car to Nantianmen. ⏰ Leave before 7:00 AM and get down the mountain before noon to avoid the crowds. Elementary school kids can walk a section of the Shibapan for the experience, but take the cable car for younger kids. 📍 The pancake with green onion at Nantianmen is CNY 10 a set; if kids can't chew the green onion, they can just eat the pancake. ⚠️ Water is expensive at the summit, so carry two bottles yourself. Suitable for ages 5 and up. If they're too young, the hour-long cable car queue will be too much if they start fussing. After coming down, visit Dai Temple—it's flat with lots of old trees, perfect for kids to run around. 07 Hengyang | Hunan For Mount Heng in Nanyue, take the bus to Nantianmen with kids, then walk for half an hour to Zhurong Peak. ⏰ Leave at 6:00 AM. If you want to see the sunrise, kids have to wake up at 4:00 AM—don't bother if they're too young. 📍 The savory tofu pudding at Bansanting is CNY 3 and kid-friendly. Nanyue Grand Temple is in town; it's flat and stroller-accessible. 🍜 Afterward, have a bowl of Hengyang fish noodles; it's mildly spicy and acceptable for kids. ⚠️ People at the temple entrance might try to get you to buy incense; don't take it, or you'll have to pay. Suitable for elementary school kids and older. For younger kids, just explore around the temple and don't go up the mountain. A 1.5-day trip is good; stay at a homestay at the foot of the mountain—it's cheap and quiet. It's cool on the mountain in summer, making it a good summer retreat. 08 Foshan | Guangdong Qinghui Garden is small but exquisite. ⏰ Go right when it opens at 9:00 AM; it's less crowded, and the koi are hungry after the night, so kids will be very enthusiastic about feeding them. 📍 Huagai Road is right next to the garden; 🍜 Minxin Old Shop's double-skin milk (chilled) is a hit—kids will want one each. Xiqiao Mountain is perfect for the afternoon. 🚄 It's 40 minutes from Foshan city center. Take the cable car up; ⏰ the light is soft after 4:00 PM, and the Guanyin statue area looks great in photos. ⚠️ Don't go on holidays; the cable car queue can be two hours long. For younger kids, I recommend Qinghui Garden and Huagai Road for a half-day of eating and strolling. For elementary school kids and older, add Xiqiao Mountain to see the volcanic rock formations and take a boat into Shiyan Cave. The overall pace is slow, perfect for a short weekend trip. Of these 4 places, I most recommend Hangzhou and Foshan—the transportation is smooth, food and accommodation are convenient, and the kids won't suffer. Which city have you visited with kids that wasn't exhausting? Let's chat in the comments.

🗺️ Geographic Background: A famous mountain in the Longshang region along the Ancient Silk Road Lianhua Mountain is located in the southern part of Kangle County, Linxia, and is a hidden gem along the Ancient Silk Road. From a distance, the mountain's petal-shaped peaks are stacked layer upon layer, resembling a blooming lotus flower—hence its name. The main peak stands at 3,578 meters above sea level and is covered in dense forests. In autumn, the mountainside is a tapestry of red and yellow leaves, and the air is crisp. It’s a hidden autumn treasure in Gansu that remains uncrowded. Beyond its beautiful scenery, the area is steeped in centuries of local folklore. 🍂 Travel Highlights: Autumn forests, a double treat of cloud seas and red leaves A trip to Lianhua Mountain in autumn is all about immersing yourself in the fall colors of the forest 🌲. As you hike up the trails, the leaves of the fir and birch trees gradually turn red and yellow, blanketing the valley in layers. On a lucky morning, you might see a vast sea of clouds rolling over the mountaintop, with mist swirling between the peaks—perfect for photos. The mountains are also home to streams and cliffs; if you get tired, you can sit on a rock and listen to the wind in the pines and the birds singing. Even if you don't make it to the summit, a stroll halfway up the mountain lets you experience the unique, vast atmosphere of the Northwest forests. 🎶 Local Culture: The intangible cultural heritage of "Hua'er" folk songs echoing through the mountains Lianhua Mountain is best known for the Lianhua Mountain Hua'er Festival, a national intangible cultural heritage. Every year, from the 1st to the 6th day of the sixth lunar month, people from various ethnic groups gather on the mountain to improvise and sing folk songs, creating a lively, bustling scene. There's a fun local custom where people block the path with Malian ropes; to pass, you have to sing a folk song in response. Even if you miss the festival in autumn, you can still occasionally hear locals humming Hua'er tunes while walking through the villages, experiencing this unique mountain romance. 🎎 Local Customs: The Laza Festival during the harvest season Autumn also brings the grand Laza Festival, which lasts from the eighth to the tenth lunar month. It’s a traditional festival where locals celebrate the harvest and pay tribute to the mountain god. During the festival, families steam buns and prepare meat dishes, visit relatives and friends, and exchange food. There's a tradition of leaving some food on the plate, symbolizing abundance for the coming year. It’s a great way to truly experience the simple life of the mountain people and feel the vibrant, down-to-earth atmosphere following the autumn harvest. 😋 Local Delicacies: Authentic flavors nurtured by the mountains Hiking is tiring, so don't miss out on the local farmhouse cuisine ✨. Tender, non-gamey hand-grabbed lamb is a must-try. Bracken and deer horn vegetables foraged from the forest—simply stir-fried or served as a cold salad—are bursting with fresh, wild flavors. There's also free-range chicken and farmhouse-cured meat, paired with Tianpei (fermented oats) and yak yogurt, which are sweet, tangy, and refreshing. Most ingredients are locally sourced and portions are generous. Enjoying a meal in a farmhouse courtyard is pure bliss. 🚶 Travel Route & Helpful Tips Recommended 1-day itinerary for Lianhua Mountain: Depart from Kangle County > Arrive at Lianhua Mountain Scenic Area > Hike up the mountain. If you have average stamina, hiking to the halfway viewing platform is enough. If you have plenty of energy, you can push for the main peak to see the sea of clouds. After descending, head to Lianlu Town for a farmhouse meal before heading back. ⚠️ Practical Tips: The mountain is at a high altitude, and the temperature difference between day and night in autumn is significant, so be sure to bring a thick jacket! Wear non-slip hiking shoes and bring plenty of drinking water. Seniors and children don't need to push for the summit; the views from halfway up are just as beautiful. Ticket prices are affordable. It's recommended to head up early on a sunny morning for a higher chance of seeing the sea of clouds. Come to Lianhua Mountain to see the Northwest autumn scenery with its colorful forests, listen to folk songs passed down for centuries, and feast on authentic farmhouse cuisine. Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and let your body and mind completely relax. If you're looking for an uncrowded, beautiful autumn destination, add Lianhua Mountain to your travel list and come experience the wonderful scenery gifted by these mountains for yourself.

I always want to travel around the National Day holiday, but I really don't want to deal with the crowds. I’ve scoured the map to pick these 8 destinations. September to October is the perfect time to visit—flight and hotel prices haven't skyrocketed yet. I’ve listed them in my personal order of preference, and for each one, I’ll explain how to explore, save money, and avoid the crowds. 1️⃣ Shigatse | Tibet ⏰ From late September to mid-October, visibility at Everest Base Camp is at its most consistent for the year. The rainy season has just ended, the clouds clear quickly, and if you arrive at Gyatso La Pass before 7 AM, you can see 5 of the 8,000-meter peaks lined up. 📍 Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery in the afternoon. The light hits the white walls at an angle after 3 PM, and the sound of monks debating drifts out from deep within the courtyard—it’s much more interesting than just walking around in the morning. Follow the locals on the kora path around the monastery; it takes about 40 minutes. ⚠️ You must take the eco-bus on the route to Everest; you cannot drive yourself to Rongbuk Monastery. Get your border permit in advance at your place of household registration; you can also get it in downtown Shigatse, but it takes an extra half-day. 🍜 Eat Tibetan noodles with sweet tea in the city. The Old Lhamo La-kyong Sweet Tea House is crowded, but tables turn over quickly. If you're staying in Everest Town, don't rush to sleep—step outside after 10 PM and you'll see the Milky Way right above you. 2️⃣ Xianning | Hubei Many people think the Red Cliffs Ancient Battlefield is a modern replica, but the cliff carvings by the river are the real deal. September is the perfect time to go; the summer heat has faded, and the river breeze is refreshing. 📍 Enter from the East Gate of the scenic area, walk through Fengchu Hermitage, and then head up to Yijiang Pavilion. This route is downhill; if you go the other way, you'll be climbing until you regret it. The cliff carvings are on the lowest level by the river, so don't turn back after seeing the pavilion. ⏰ Head to the river boardwalk after 4 PM. The sunset hitting the Red Cliffs looks 10 times better than it does at noon. I don't recommend boarding the replica warship in the scenic area; the ticket isn't cheap, and it's really just for a photo. 🚄 It’s about a 40-minute taxi ride from Xianning North Station, or you can take an intercity train to Chibi North and transfer. It’s suitable for seniors, as the entire boardwalk is flat and even wheelchair-accessible. 3️⃣ Linxia | Gansu You can combine Liujiaxia and Bingling Temple into one day. The Yellow River water is clear from September to October. On the boat ride into the Bingling Temple gorge, the stone walls on both sides are cut straight by the water, and the breeze blowing in is cool. 📍 You need to buy a separate ticket for the special caves at Bingling Temple, but the giant Buddha in Cave 169 is worth it. The first boat in the morning has the fewest people; after 10 AM, when the tour groups arrive, the boardwalks are full of selfie sticks. ⏰ Save the Liujiaxia Reservoir viewing platform for your return trip; the water reflects the light like crushed silver around 4:30 PM. You can go cycling around Taiji Island; the rental point is near the reservoir pier. 🍜 Don't miss the hand-grabbed mutton and Hezhou buns in downtown Linxia; the old shops on North Street are more authentic than the ones at the entrance to the scenic area. ⚠️ Boat trips to Bingling Temple are heavily affected by the weather and will be suspended on windy days, so check with the pier before you set off. 4️⃣ Xining | Qinghai Many people only treat Xining as a transit point for Tibet, but it's worth staying for a day. Ta'er Monastery and Dongguan Mosque have completely different vibes—one is in the mountains, and the other is in the city. 📍 Get to Ta'er Monastery as soon as it opens at 8 AM and head straight to the Great Golden Tile Hall; there are fewer people then, and the scent of butter lamps is strongest. Head to Dongguan Mosque in the afternoon, but note that it is closed to tourists on Fridays for Jumu'ah prayers, so don't plan your visit for that day. ⏰ The Bodhi trees at Ta'er Monastery start to turn yellow in late September, which looks more layered against the red walls and golden roofs than the solid green of summer. Don't miss the Butter Sculpture Museum in the monastery; many people leave after seeing the main hall. 🍜 Dongguan Street is a BBQ street at night. Grilled lamb skewers with brewed tea—there are more locals than tourists. ⚠️ Don't engage with the touts selling consecrated items at the entrance of Ta'er Monastery; just walk away politely. 5️⃣ Guangzhou | Guangdong Guangzhou is finally not a sauna in October. You can combine Baiyun Mountain and Canton Tower into one day this season—hike in the morning and see the lights at night. 📍 Enter Baiyun Mountain from the South Gate, take the cable car to the summit square, and then walk slowly to Moxing Ridge. The October breeze is crisp, not sticky like in summer. Head to the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall in the afternoon; the brick carvings and gray sculptures are worth a close look. Entry stops at 4:30 PM. ⏰ Canton Tower lights up after 7 PM, but I don't recommend going to the top—it's expensive and requires queuing. Go to Flower City Square or Haixin Bridge for a panoramic view; the effect is just as good, and it's free. 🍜 There are old-fashioned rice noodle roll shops in the alleys near the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall that are open from morning until noon. Chimelong is great for kids, but it's crowded during the National Day holiday, so I suggest avoiding October 1–3. ⚠️ Restaurants around Canton Tower are overpriced; walk 10 minutes to Kecun to eat instead. 6️⃣ Putian | Fujian Meizhou Island is at its most comfortable from September to October. The typhoon season is basically over, and the seawater is still warm. The island isn't big; you can circle it in half a day by renting an e-bike. 📍 People start burning incense at the Mazu Ancestral Temple at 6 AM, so go early if you want to photograph the hall without crowds. Ewei Shenshi Park is at the southernmost tip of the island; the sea-eroded landforms are more stunning than you'd imagine, and you can walk onto the reefs after low tide in the afternoon. ⏰ Go to Lianchi Beach at dusk; the sun sets over the sea, and there aren't many people on the beach. There are guesthouses on the island, and staying for a night is much more relaxed than a day trip. 🚄 It takes about an hour by bus from Putian Station to Wenjia Pier, then transfer to the ferry to get to the island. ⚠️ The last ferry time changes with the season, so check the return schedule before you get on the island so you don't forget the time while having fun. 7️⃣ Guiyang | Guizhou Guiyang is the kind of city that's easy to pass through, but if you visit the surrounding spots in October, you'll want to stay for two extra days. Tianhetan, Qingyan Ancient Town, Gaopo Yunding Grassland, and Huaxi Park—pick two and you'll have enough to do. 📍 I recommend visiting Qingyan Ancient Town in the afternoon. The main street is very commercialized, so head into the back alleys; the Ming and Qing dynasty stone walls and crooked wooden doors are the real deal. Gaopo Yunding Grassland is best in the morning; the grass is still green in October, and while it's windy, the sky is crystal blue. ⏰ Huaxi Park is most comfortable for a stroll in the evening; there are many locals walking around and few tourists. The combination of caves and waterfalls at Tianhetan can be explored in half a day and is suitable for kids. 🍜 For breakfast in Guiyang, have Changwang noodles or beef rice noodles; there are many old shops near Huaxi Wangji. ⚠️ Rose candy is everywhere in Qingyan Ancient Town, and the prices vary wildly, so walk further in before buying. 8️⃣ Jinan | Shandong Autumn in Jinan is short but beautiful. From late September to mid-October, the spring water levels are high, and Baotu Spring gushes the strongest. You can visit the First Spring under Heaven and Thousand Buddha Mountain in one day. 📍 Get to Baotu Spring as soon as it opens at 7 AM and see the "three springs" before the tour groups arrive. Then exit from the East Gate and walk along the moat to Heihu Spring; the path is full of old Jinan residents fetching water. ⏰ Head up Thousand Buddha Mountain after 4 PM and climb to Xingguo Chan Temple just in time for the sunset to overlook the entire city of Jinan. The persimmons on the mountain turn red in October; there are vendors selling them by the road, but don't pick them from the trees. 🍜 Choose either Furong Street or Kuanhouli; I recommend Kuanhouli, as it's at least not full of the same snacks you find everywhere else in the country. For braised pork belly with rice, the small shops downstairs in residential areas are the most reliable. ⚠️ The joint ticket for Baotu Spring and Thousand Buddha Mountain is cheaper than buying them separately, but don't try to do both in the same half-day, or your legs will be dead. Of these 8 places, the ones I want to revisit most are Shigatse and Linxia—one for the mountains and one for the water. September to October is when they are at their best. If you can only pick one, tell me where you're starting from, and I'll help you figure out the best way to go.
