The area is shaded by trees, so even in August afternoons, it’s not hot. Sitting on the rocks listening to the water can fill an entire afternoon. Shaoshan Tourist Area is another route. ⚠️ Be sure to book tickets in advance or you won’t get in. The scenic area is large, so take the sightseeing bus unless you want to walk until your legs give out. The scenic area also has a museum for background knowledge. Lingwu Shuidonggou Tourist Area offers a big combo ticket covering ruins, the Great Wall, and hidden military caves. It takes half a day to explore but is rich in content with unique sights at every step. Wanfenglin offers a different scene. The peaks stand like bamboo shoots in the fields. At dusk, the rice paddies turn golden green, and smoke rises from village chimneys, creating a peaceful painting. Rent an electric bike to circle the fields. The sunset light makes every photo wallpaper-worthy. 🍜 In Xingyi city, try the sour soup beef noodles. Tell them your family name, and staff will explain how your branch migrated. Elementary kids find this more exciting than textbooks. Yunqiu Mountain is great for families. After taking the cable car up, walk along the shaded trail. The mountain breeze feels better than air conditioning. Mid-mountain is the thousand-year-old village of Ta’erpo, with stone slab roads and earthen cave dwellings on both sides. For a summer retreat and study trip, some spend thousands flying to Sanya to see the sea, while others take a two-hour high-speed train into the mountains, spending an afternoon gazing at glaciers and wetlands. Kids chase butterflies, adults enjoy the cool breeze, and the money saved is enough for three more good meals. These 8 places are off-the-beaten-path, cool, and can handle the energy of "little monsters." Trust me, once you go, you'll know what it means to be underestimated. 1️⃣ Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai While others are counting heads by Qinghai Lake, I'll take you straight to Golog. Although the core area of Mount Nyenpo Yurtse is currently closed, the surrounding grasslands and streams are more than enough for kids to run wild. At an altitude of 4,000 meters, it's only 18℃ at noon in summer, and the wind carries the wild scent of grass seeds and yak dung. Head to the First Bend of the Yellow River at 8 AM; before the mist clears, the water surface looks like a gray-blue silk ribbon, curving gracefully. Kids can skip stones, but don't wander too far; a few steps at this altitude will leave them breathless. ⚠️ There aren't many commercial facilities here, and gas stations are far apart, so remember to fill up before driving. When it gets too hot at noon, head straight into Chen Clan Ancestral Hall. The old house is cool like a natural air-conditioned room. The colorful gray sculptures on the roof ridges will keep kids looking up for a long time, asking if that's a dragon or a phoenix. If the kids still have energy in the afternoon, Chimelong Water Park can solve everything, but ⚠️ it's crowded on weekends, with an hour-long wait for each ride. I recommend going on weekdays or buying a fast pass. Don't bother going up Canton Tower for the night view; two hours of queuing to see some lights is not as comfortable as enjoying the breeze by the Pearl River. 6️⃣ Yinchuan City | Ningxia Yinchuan's coolness is a dry coolness, unlike the sticky humidity of the south. Go to Helan Mountain Rock Paintings in the morning. No matter how strong the sun, the wind in the mountain gully will immediately dry your sweat. Kids can take a piece of paper and trace the rock paintings; those suns and sheep carved into the stones are much more vivid than textbook illustrations. In the afternoon, visit Shuidonggou. The underground tunnels maintain a constant temperature year-round; entering feels like stepping into a cellar. Kids will feel like they're on an adventure, while adults might feel like they're escaping. You won’t find this kind of time-and-space clash anywhere else The highlight is the military cave. Crawling into this underground maze, the narrow passages force you to walk sideways. The design of hidden weapons and traps gave me chills. Ancient wisdom is seriously hardcore. Coming out, you can see the Ming Great Wall ruins. The winding earthen walls on the yellow soil add a weathered filter to your photos You must take the mule cart. The driver sings Xintianyou folk songs, instantly boosting the atmosphere. There’s also a boat ride on Hongshan Lake, flanked by yardang landforms. The contrast of yellow cliffs and green water is stunning For planning, it’s best to go early in the morning. There’s no shade by the lake, and half an hour in the sun will wear you out. 🚄 It takes about 25 minutes by taxi from Hengshui North Station to Hengshui Lake, costing around 30 yuan. There’s a place to rent tandem bikes for 30 yuan an hour. Ride to the south shore and back to catch the sunset.
