These 8️⃣ places are uncrowded, scenic, and reachable by high-speed train 01 Xinyang | Henan Summer in Xinyang feels like stolen cool air from the southern Henan mountains. The main peak of Jigong Mountain, Baoxiao Peak, is over 700 m high. It can be 38°C at the foot and drop 7–8 degrees at the top, and you may need a light jacket in the early morning and evening. ⏰ Try to start ascending before 10 AM. Take the park shuttle to Baojian Mountain entrance, then follow the hiking trail about 40 minutes to Baoxiao Peak. When the mist hasn't cleared, the whole mountain feels like it's steeped in icy water; pine needles hold droplets that crunch underfoot. 🍜 Don't rush off after descending. The farmhouse restaurants in Wushengguan village serve a hearty pot of chicken with freshly picked perilla for about CNY 50 per person, more satisfying than the mountain fast food. ⚠️ Jigong Mountain ticket plus round-trip shuttle is about CNY 100. First head to Baishi Mountain, a 2,000 m peak forest with a glass walkway hanging off the cliff and a sea of clouds underfoot. 🚄 From Baoding East station, take a bus to Laiyuan county, then a 20-minute taxi for around CNY 60. It's windy up top and feels under 25°C, so a sun-protective layer is perfect. In the afternoon, move on to Yesanpo. The water in Bailixia is bone-chilling—go barefoot and it wakes you up. The canyon is shaded and cool; the full trail takes about 2 hours and you won't get sunburned or exhausted. I saved Baiyangdian for day two. From Anxin pier, take a boat into the reed beds; the boatmen pole through the reeds and water birds flap away. ⚠️ The "lotus garden combo ticket" some boatmen sell can include duplicated stops—confirm the route before boarding so you don't get taken in circles. Qingxiling deserves a half-day on its own. Muling's Nanmu Hall smells of old wood and sits under ancient trees several degrees cooler than outside. The place is quiet and perfect for a slow walk. 03 Yulin | Shaanxi Summer in Yulin makes the Loess Plateau an underrated cool destination. The Wave Valley is in Longzhou township, Jingbian county; the Danxia stripes look like wind-sculpted waves. The red cliffs bake in the noon sun, but there are shaded spots in the gullies where a breeze dries your sweat. 📍 Navigate to "Wave Valley Scenic Area". Tickets are CNY 90 and a 2-hour boardwalk walk covers it. The highlights are the flaming Danxia and red-cliff Danxia—avoid being there from 12 PM to 3 PM, it's brutally hot. The Qingxiu Mountain scenic area is CNY 20 and big enough for a full day of walking. ⏰ Evenings around 5 PM are the most pleasant. The light softens, and walking from Guanyin Temple to Tianchi Pond stays shaded as the breeze blows up from the Yong River, bringing moisture. There’s a large lawn by Tianchi Pond—lay a mat and relax until 7 PM to watch the city lights come on in the distance. Fubo Temple is in Heng county, about an hour from the city. The temple is small but riverside, and the river breeze through the hall feels better than AC. Sitting on the temple steps is surprisingly comfortable. 🍜 Save your Nanning night for Zhongshan Road. For laoyoufen, choose "Fuji"—the pickled bamboo shoot is well seasoned and a bowl costs CNY 8. On the island, Crescent Bay's pebble beach has rounded stones polished by the sea, cool under barefoot.
