Kunming’s 20-yuan “Monet Garden”! Fengzeyuan’s underwater world, unbelievably beautiful ?
In March, Kunming’s cherry blossoms crowd Yuantong Mountain, and crowds flood Luolong Park. But I drove deep into the Songhuaba water source area—to find a secret garden hidden in the mountains: Fengzeyuan Botanical Garden. 🚗💨
One hour from downtown, passing layer upon layer of green hills, the navigation led me to the entrance of this “Central Yunnan Water Source Conservation Area.” A 20-yuan ticket opened a door to another world. 🍃
💎 First glance: The water of Heilongtan is so clear it seems unreal
Entering the park, the first thing that caught my eye was that pool of water. It was unbelievably clear—you could see the stones at the bottom, the swimming fish, and the swaying aquatic plants all distinctly. Sunlight penetrated the surface, casting mottled shadows on the bottom. At that moment, I really wondered if I was wearing a filter. 💧
Even more amazing was the water covered with sea mustard flowers, locally called “water willow flowers.” These small white flowers are extremely picky about water quality and can only survive in the purest water sources. They swayed underwater, with blossoms floating on the surface like tiny white fairies. When the wind blew, petals fell onto the water and drifted away with the waves—this was the most romantic “falling flowers on flowing water” scene I’ve ever seen. 🌸💧
🌸 Second glance: Camellias just faded, cherry blossoms are blooming, spring is passing the baton
The camellia festival in February just ended, and the park’s 80,000 camellia plants haven’t completely finished blooming yet, while the pink and white cherry blossoms are already eagerly taking over. Walking along the stream, cherry blossom petals floated on the water, intertwining with the “water willow flowers,” pink and white dancing together in the water, as beautiful as a moving painting.
By the stream is a small iron bridge, called the “Monet in the Water” spot by netizens—standing on the bridge looking down, surrounded by sea mustard flowers, fish swimming through, and petals floating, it really feels like stepping into an oil painting.
🐟 Third glance: The fish here aren’t afraid of people
The biggest surprise was the fish in the water. Those native fish I couldn’t name (supposedly golden-line fish and needlefish) didn’t shy away at all. I squatted by the shore, and they swam right over, opening and closing their mouths as if asking, “Did you bring food?” The underwater fish, floating sea mustard flowers, and falling cherry blossom petals formed a vibrant underwater painting.
🏯 Fourth glance: Heilonggong Ancient Temple, Zen hidden in the flower shadows
Passing through the dawn redwood boardwalk, an ancient temple quietly stands by the pool—Heilonggong. Dark tiles and red eaves, towering ancient trees, cherry blossoms peeking over the walls, all reflected in the clear water. Young women in Hanfu were taking photos in front of the temple, blending people, flowers, temple, and shadows into a stunning traditional Chinese scene. 📸
🍜 Fifth glance: The vegetable street at the entrance hides the most authentic local flavors
After getting tired from walking, right at the park entrance is a local villagers’ vegetable street. Fresh wild vegetables, freshly picked strawberries, farm eggs, and steaming cold rice rolls... I bought a serving of pea noodles and sat by the roadside to eat. The mountain breeze blew petals into my bowl, which I swallowed along with the sour and spicy flavors. At that moment, I felt this was exactly what spring should be like.
