Kotor travel guide and discussion

I really want to share this adventure. 🚲 Two days ago, my husband and I decided to rent bikes for two days—and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of our trip. 🤒 The rental cost 50 euros per bike for two days. 🚗 We covered about 50 km along the coast of the Bay of Kotor in one day, seeing it from a completely different perspective. ⛱ With a bike, you can stop almost anywhere: at a beach you love, a scenic viewpoint, or right in the middle of the road whenever you want to snap a photo of another breathtaking view. 📆 Our route started in Kotor and headed toward Risan—a charming little town that’s a pleasure to just cycle through. 📷 Next, we headed to Perast. I highly recommend visiting this place to anyone traveling to Montenegro. 🛥 The town itself is tiny—you can walk across it in about half an hour—but the atmosphere is absolutely incredible. From Perast, I suggest taking a boat to Our Lady of the Rocks (we went on a different day)—an artificial island with a church and museum of the same name. It’s a fascinating spot, especially if you’re looking for some history along with your photos. ✔️ After Perast, we continued along the coast, soaking in the views, stopping for lunch, and pulling over whenever we saw something beautiful. 🔗 Then we reached the Kamenari-Lepetane ferry, which is free for cyclists! ⛴️ Bikes cross for free, and during the summer, the ferry runs almost constantly, departing every 15–20 minutes. 💳 On the other side, we stopped at a small cafe called Bokeški Gušti, famous for its squid dishes, before completing our loop back to Kotor. The final tally: 50 km, the sea, the mountains, quaint towns, a delicious lunch, a ferry ride, and a million stunning views. We were exhausted. But we were so happy. ❤️ Now, I officially consider cycling one of the best ways to explore the Bay of Kotor.

#underratedspots The charm of Kotor in spring? Seriously, it’s next-level magical! Cherry blossoms start popping along the bay, and the whole place feels like it’s straight out of a fairytale. 😍 Kick off your morning with a chill stroll along Kotor’s gorgeous waterfront (address: Dobrota, Kotor 85330, Montenegro, open 24/7). The soft cherry blossoms frame those epic mountain-meets-sea views—trust me, your camera roll will be living its best life! 📸✨ Get lost in the Old Town’s maze of narrow streets, where every corner is blooming with color. The alleys are bursting with fresh flowers, and it’s the perfect backdrop to snap some dreamy spring shots for the ‘Gram. Honestly, Kotor is that repeatdestination—once you visit in spring, you’ll want to come back every single year. I know I do!

Europe has plenty of famous destinations, but some of my favorite trips were to countries that rarely get the same attention as France, Italy, or Switzerland. These three genuinely surprised me. Slovenia was my first pick. I loved wandering around Ljubljana, with its riverside cafés and relaxed atmosphere, but the real highlight was Lake Bled. I also made time for Lake Bohinj, which felt quieter and more natural. Then came Albania. Tirana was lively and unexpectedly fun, but I enjoyed the coast even more. Berat, with its white Ottoman-era houses climbing the hillside, was one of the most memorable stops of the trip. My third choice is Montenegro. I spent time exploring Kotor, where dramatic mountains surround the bay, then drove along the coast toward Budva. The scenery alone made the journey worthwhile. What I liked about these countries was the sense of discovery. I didn’t feel like I was following a checklist of famous European attractions. There were quiet streets, local restaurants, scenic drives, and plenty of moments where I simply stopped and looked around. If you want Europe with fewer crowds and a little more adventure, I’d start here. #slovenia #montenegrotravel #albania

Cruise ships dock by 8 AM. By 9 AM, the Old Town is a human river. But here's what nobody tells you — walk five minutes in the wrong direction, and you'll have a medieval town all to yourself. Kotor is tiny, but it hides secrets everywhere. Here's how I found them. 🐈 7:00 AM — The Cat City Before The Chaos Kotor is a city of cats. They're everywhere. But at 7 AM, they own the streets completely. No guides with flags. No selfie sticks. Just cats stretching on stone steps, church bells echoing off limestone walls, and the smell of fresh bread from a bakery you can't see but definitely can find. Follow the scent. The Old Town at dawn is not Instagram. It's better. 🆓 Free 📍 @Kotor Old Town ⏰ Sunrise is your golden ticket 🥖 8:00 AM — Bakery With No Name On a side street near St. Luke's Church, there's a doorway. No sign. Just a wooden shelf across the opening and an old woman selling burek. Cheese or spinach. She pulls them out of the oven as you wait. Flaky, greasy, scalding hot. You eat it standing up, wiping your hands on a napkin she hands you without asking. Best breakfast in the Balkans. 1.50 EUR. 💸 1.50 EUR 📍 Side street next to @St. Luke's Church ⛪ 9:30 AM — The Church No One Visits Everyone takes photos of St. Tryphon's Cathedral. Almost nobody walks five minutes further to St. Mary's Collegiate Church. It's smaller, quieter, and has a 14th-century fresco that time forgot. The caretaker is a tiny woman who speaks no English but will point at details you'd otherwise miss. Donate a euro. Light a candle. Sit in silence. 💸 Free entry, donations welcome 📍 @St. Mary's Collegiate Church 🧗 4:00 PM — The Ladder of Kotor (Partial Climb) The fortress hike costs 8 EUR. The Ladder of Kotor is free. It's the old zigzag path behind town, used by locals long before tickets existed. Don't do the whole climb unless you want to suffer. Climb just 15 minutes up. There's a stone ledge overlooking the entire bay. Cruise ship looks like a toy. The view is the same as the fortress — minus the crowd. Bring water. Thank yourself later. 🆓 Free 📍 @Ladder of Kotor ⏰ Late afternoon light hits the bay perfectly 🦑 7:00 PM — Seafood Where Fishermen Eat Tourist restaurants line the bay. Skip them all. Walk 10 minutes along the water to Cattaro Restaurant, where local fishermen dock their boats. Order grilled squid and a glass of white Vranac. The squid was swimming three hours ago. The terrace sits directly over the water. You eat, you watch the mountains turn purple, you forget your phone exists. 💸 15-20 EUR 📍 @Cattaro Restaurant 🌊 9:00 PM — The Waterfront Bench Secret After dinner, skip the bars. Walk to the waterfront near the old city walls. There are stone benches where old men sit and watch the bay. Sit down. The water is so still it looks like glass. The mountains are black silhouettes against a navy sky. A cat will probably join you. Stay as long as you want. Nobody will rush you. This is Kotor's real nightlife. 🆓 Free 📍 Waterfront near @Kotor City Walls 🏨 Where I Stayed (And Didn't Want To Leave) Historic Boutique Hotel Cattaro — a renovated 18th-century palace inside the Old Town walls. Exposed stone, wooden beams, and a room that overlooked the main square. At night, I opened the window and listened to a street musician playing guitar below. Booked on Trip.com. Worth every cent. 💸 ~100 EUR/night via Trip.com 💡 Four Things That Matter · No Uber here. Taxis are cash only, agree on price before entering. · Hike the fortress at 6 AM if you must. Otherwise, use the Ladder. Free and empty. · Local SIM cards are cheap, but Trip.com eSIM worked perfectly in the bay. · Say "hvala" for thank you. It opens doors. Kotor is not a destination. It's a feeling. Stone, salt, cats, and silence. I left a piece of myself there. Maybe you'll find it. You’re climbing the ancient stone steps of St. John's Fortress in Kotor—there are nearly 1,500 of them here. Your heart is pounding, you're trying to catch your breath, and then you see it: the Bay of Kotor, looking like a Norwegian fjord, but with palm trees and the warm Adriatic sun. And you just freeze. Because beauty like this doesn't need words. What you absolutely can't miss: 🏰 Kotor — a Venetian labyrinth where every stone breathes history. First mentioned in the 1st century AD as Ascrivium, this city has been ruled by Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians, Serbs, Venetians (for nearly four centuries!), and Austro-Hungarians. Hike up to the fortress at dawn—the city is still asleep, and you'll have the breathtaking view of the bay all to yourself. Plus, Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the only place of its kind in Montenegro. 🏝️ Perast — a picturesque, movie-set of a town with 16 palaces for just 400 residents. Hop on a boat to the island of Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela)—a man-made islet created by fishermen as a tribute to the Virgin Mary. Just picture it: they spent centuries dropping rocks into the sea to build it. 🌅 Sveti Stefan — the ultimate postcard-perfect island. Back in the 15th century, it was a fishing village built with fortress walls to fend off pirates. In the 1950s, the locals were relocated, and the island was transformed into one of the world’s most exclusive resorts, hosting stars like Yuri Gagarin and Sophia Loren. White cottages, red terracotta roofs, and golden sunsets—it's easy to see why everyone wants to take this view home. 🌲 Durmitor — a completely different side of Montenegro. Picture the glacial Black Lake surrounded by pine forests, and the Tara River Canyon, plunging 1,300 meters deep—the second deepest in the world right after the Grand Canyon. The river gets its name from the ancient Illyrian Autariatae tribe. The soaring 172-meter-high Đurđevića Tara Bridge, built in 1937, was once the only thread tying the country's north and south together. Whitewater rafting on these turquoise waters will give you an adrenaline rush to last a whole year. 🕌 Ostrog — a dazzling white monastery carved straight into a sheer cliff face at an altitude of nearly 900 meters. Founded in 1665 by Archbishop Vasilije Jovanović on the site of ancient caves once inhabited by hermit monks, it houses the relics of St. Basil of Ostrog. It's the kind of place that makes even a non-believer stop and stare up in awe. 🌤️ As for the weather, Montenegro is a year-round delight. Winters on the coast are mild (rarely dropping below +11°C), and snow is extremely rare. Summers are dry and comfortable, maxing out around +29°C, with the sea warming up to a balmy +25°C. From June to September, even the nights are comfortably warm. Beach season runs from mid-May to early October. Meanwhile, winter in the mountains is a veritable fairytale—snow piles up to the roofs, making for perfect skiing. Two totally different climates in one country—talk about magic! Montenegro is a morning dip in the Adriatic, a lunch of fresh mussels in Perast, and an evening sipping a glass of Vranac wine in the mountains of Žabljak. And in between all that? Rakija, the warm smiles of the locals, and the scent of pine needles mingling with the salty sea breeze.

There are places that look beautiful in photos. And then there are those that turn out to be even more breathtaking in real life. 📍 Montenegro is exactly that kind of place. Imagine this: you're sipping your morning coffee with a mountain view, twenty minutes later you're swimming in the crystal-clear Adriatic, and by evening you're strolling through a medieval town that's over a thousand years old. But they leave with an urge to come back again—just to uncover new hidden bays, scenic mountain roads, and little towns that you simply can't help but fall in love with.

There is something almost unreal about Kotor. A medieval stone town sits between enormous mountains and the deep blue waters of the Bay of Kotor. Narrow streets lead to tiny squares, old churches and cafés hidden behind centuries-old walls. The town is small enough to explore on foot, but the surroundings deserve much more time. ✨ Take a boat to Perast ⛰️ Hike to the San Giovanni Fortress 🌊 Swim in the bay 🚗 Drive along the spectacular coastal roads 🌅 Stay until sunset, when the mountains turn golden 🔆Best time: May–June and September–October 💰 Approximate prices: · Budget hotel: €60–100/night · Nice hotel: €120–200 · Luxury: €250–400+ 🥑Try: black risotto, grilled octopus, fresh Adriatic fish, Njeguši prosciutto and local wine. ✨ Little secret: if you want a quieter experience, stay outside the historic center and visit Kotor early in the morning before the day-trip crowds arrive. Kotor isn’t about flashy luxury. Its luxury is the view. #travel2026 #couplestrip #naturalwonders

A breathtaking medieval town where ancient stone streets, dramatic mountains, and the Adriatic Sea create one of Europe's most beautiful landscapes. ✨ Explored Kotor's enchanting Old Town, wandering through narrow cobbled streets, charming squares, church, cafes, and historic buildings. Climbed to the Church of Our Lady of Remedy, perched high on the mountainside, where spectacular panoramic views over the Bay of Kotor reward the hike. Strolled along the harbour, took a relaxing boat ride around the stunning bay, and met the town's famous friendly cats, beloved by locals and celebrated with their own Cat Museum. Kotor is a magical destination where history, breathtaking scenery, and Mediterranean charm come together in unforgettable fashion. #Kotor #Montenegro #BayOfKotor #OldTown #OurLadyOfRemedy #BoatRide #CatsOfKotor #TravelPhotography #Wanderlust #lostpanda ✈️📸

Kotor is probably one of those cities where in 3 days you manage both to soak up the atmosphere and not to wear yourself out rushing around. It's compact, scenic, with mountains and clear sea in a single frame. I'm sharing a day-by-day itinerary, tested on myself, a trip that became a surprise for my wife's birthday. One important thing about the season right away: we were there in March. That means empty, without the cruise crowds, but the serpentine road where people drive is unfortunately still closed, it opens at the end of May. Keep that in mind when planning your trip. In other words, if you want quiet and relatively moderate prices, then March is a great choice; if you want attractions and warmth, better go in summer. So… 📍 Day 1. The Old Town We started with the Old Town, which is also where we booked our hotel. It's the heart of Kotor, a medieval labyrinth of stone streets under UNESCO protection. It's easy to get lost here, but also easy enough to find your way again, since the area is fairly small. What's worth seeing: · St. Tryphon's Cathedral, 12th century, the city's main church · Cosy squares with the churches of St. Luke and St. Nicholas · The cat park by the North Gate Kotor is a city of cats in general, they're everywhere here, there are even cat houses and a museum. Our child sat with them for about 30 minutes, feeding and stroking them, they're very tame here. In the evening we walked along the waterfront by the bay. It's super romantic, peaceful, and that very place where time stands still. 📍 Day 2. The climb to St. John's Fortress The main highlight of the trip. The climb up the Ladder of Kotor, around 1,350 steps, up to the San Giovanni fortress. Not easy, but the views are worth it: all of Kotor from a bird's-eye view, the bay laid out below you. We made it harder for ourselves and started the climb from the other side, up the serpentine. It turned out later that this is the free route, while the steps are the paid one. The climb took about an hour, we barely stopped, maybe a couple of times for water. Even our 10-year-old found it relatively easy. It's best to head up an hour or hour and a half before sunset, to enjoy an incredibly beautiful sundown. After coming back down, your legs may ache and tremble a bit if you're not in shape. So it's better to spend the rest of the day in cafes and wandering the streets of the old town. 📍 Day 3. Perast and Tivat We headed out beyond Kotor, and it was worth it. Perast is a tiny, toy-like little town on the shore of the bay: stone houses, bell towers, a single waterfront and complete calm. We got there by taxi in 15 minutes. A magical place, steeped in serenity and the total absence of any cares at all. Tivat and Porto Montenegro are also worth visiting, and that's also 20 minutes by taxi. A luxury marina with yachts, expensive boutiques and restaurants won't leave you indifferent. The contrast with medieval Kotor is striking. Be sure to stroll along the waterfront, it's fairly long and winding and lets you look at this beautiful place from different angles. 💰 A few words on money and logistics Montenegro is fairly expensive, not only for tourists but also for those who live there, take it from someone who lived there for almost a year. But travel is exactly what's meant to put experiences first and leave you ready to pay for them. · A taxi to neighbouring towns – 20 euros · A good-level hotel – 80-150 euros a night for two · Restaurants – 10-12 euros average bill per person If you want to save on food, there's a big mall with a supermarket nearby, where you can stock up on fruit, water, vegetables, snacks, and everything you consume daily that doesn't need cooking. ✨ To sum up 3 days in Kotor is the perfect amount of time for a trip: you manage to see the city, climb the mountain, make a little excursion out to the bay, and simply have a good wander too. Life in Montenegro left me personally with very mixed feelings, but Kotor is exactly the place I'd happily return to. Save the itinerary if you're planning to go to Montenegro. Write your questions in the comments and I'll be sure to answer. #itinerarycheck #montenegrotravel #kotor

Nestled along the breathtaking Bay of Kotor, Perast is a small town with an enormous amount of beauty and history. With its stone palaces, waterfront promenade, and stunning mountain backdrop, it feels like a place frozen in time. From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the peaceful atmosphere. Unlike many crowded tourist destinations, Perast offers a slower pace where every stroll along the waterfront becomes a memorable experience. The crystal-clear waters of the bay, traditional Venetian-style architecture, and spectacular views create a picture-perfect setting at every turn. 📸 The highlight of any visit is the view of the famous Our Lady of the Rocks, a tiny island church floating in the middle of the bay. Finally, someone asked about Montenegro! This hidden gem in the Balkans has Swiss-style snowy mountains and fjords, but prices are even cheaper than Thailand. Spend 6k per person for a high-end European experience with fewer crowds, beautiful scenery, and no visa required. A 7-day, 6-night deep dive—I’m officially impressed. 🇲🇪 Highlights|Missing these spots means missing out 🏰 Kotor old town + city walls: A Venetian-style old town listed as a World Heritage site. Be sure to climb 1,350 steps up to St. John’s Fortress to watch the sunset over Europe’s southernmost fjord. The old town is also a cat lover’s paradise, with lazy cats around every corner. 🚤 Kotor bay boat tour: Take a speedboat to the Blue Cave, where the water is as clear as jelly and perfect for snorkeling. Stop by the abandoned submarine base with its cool industrial vibe. Then head to Perast town to take a boat to Our Lady of the Rocks island. The twin island sea views are incredibly soothing. 🏝️ Budva + Sveti Stefan island: A seaside old town with 2,500 years of history. Mogren beach’s fine sand and blue sea rival Greece. Sveti Stefan island looks like a postcard, especially stunning in the pink-gold light at dusk. 🌲 Durmitor National Park: A World Natural Heritage site. The glacial Black Lake reflects the snowy mountains like a mirror. The 1.5-hour lake hike is perfect for immersive fresh air. Tara Bridge inspired the movie "The Bridge." Standing on it, you’ll see Europe’s deepest canyon—breathtaking beyond words. Entrance fee is about 5 euros. 🗓️ Itinerary|True vacation means no rushing Day 1: Arrive in Tivat, pick up the car, head straight to Kotor old town, stay in the old town at night. Day 2: Full day boat tour of Kotor bay, Blue Cave + Perast + Our Lady of the Rocks island. Day 3: Morning climb the Kotor city walls, afternoon cable car to Lovćen mountain for panoramic views of the bay and snowy peaks. If not, you can get an invitation letter through a travel agency. 📅 Best time: May–June or September, fewer crowds and comfortable weather. July–August is peak season with more people and higher prices. 🚗 Transportation: Attractions are spread out and public transport is inconvenient. Strongly recommend self-driving or hiring a car with a driver. Mountain roads are winding and steep; if not driving yourself, hiring a local driver is safer. 💶 Currency: Euro is used, but small towns and guesthouses often prefer cash, so bring enough. 👗 What to wear: Summer clothes and dresses for the coast, thick jackets for Durmitor’s big temperature swings in the morning and evening, and non-slip shoes for hiking. Montenegro’s beauty is the stunning combination of mountains and sea, the quiet stone alleys of old towns, and affordable prices that feel reassuring. Before it gets crowded, go now 🇲🇪✨

#localrules The Bay of Kotor is famous for its medieval towns, crystal-clear water, and mountain scenery, but the experience becomes even better when you travel like a respectful guest. A few local habits can help you enjoy the bay while protecting the place that makes it so special. Start your day early if you want to explore Kotor Old Town before the crowds arrive, especially during the cruise ship season. The narrow streets are shared by locals, so avoid blocking walkways while taking photos. If you hear church bells or attend a local event, keep your voice low and respect the peaceful atmosphere. Swimming is popular around the bay, but always use designated areas and never leave litter on the beaches or waterfront. If you're driving, expect narrow coastal roads and let buses pass safely rather than stopping for photos in dangerous spots. When dining at family-owned restaurants, a friendly greeting and a little patience are always appreciated. Most importantly, remember that the Bay of Kotor is more than a tourist destination—it's a place where people live every day. Respect the local community, protect the historic streets, and leave the bay as beautiful as you found it. #LocalRules #BayOfKotor #Montenegro #ResponsibleTravel #TravelSmart #RespectLocalCulture

#localrules The Bay of Kotor is one of the most breathtaking places in Montenegro, where dramatic mountains meet the calm Adriatic Sea. Walking through the historic towns and enjoying the waterfront feels like stepping into another era. What makes this destination truly special is how locals work to preserve its natural beauty and rich history. A few simple local rules can make your visit smoother and more respectful. The Old Town streets are made of centuries-old stone, so wear comfortable shoes and avoid climbing on historic walls or monuments. When visiting churches, dress modestly by covering your shoulders and knees if required, and always keep noise to a minimum. If you're taking a boat tour around the bay, never throw anything into the water and follow the crew's instructions to help protect the marine environment. During summer, the narrow roads around the bay can become busy, so park only in designated areas and be patient with local traffic. The best way to experience the Bay of Kotor is to slow down, enjoy the scenery, support local cafés and small shops, and treat this UNESCO-listed destination with care. Respecting local customs helps keep the bay beautiful for both residents and future travellers. #LocalRules #BayOfKotor #Montenegro #ResponsibleTravel #TravelTips #VisitMontenegro

Who would have thought that Montenegro, a lesser-known European gem featured in the variety show Running Man, would quickly gain fame thanks to its stunning Adriatic fjords? With visa-free entry, low travel barriers, few crowds, and a peaceful atmosphere, the combination of mountains, sea, and ancient towns creates an unforgettable vibe. A 3-day short trip is just right, with no rush and a fully immersive European slow vacation experience. 📅Day 1 Kotor Bay | medieval fjord town Arrive at Tivat Airport and stay in a guesthouse in Kotor’s old town. The entire old town is open to the public for free, with winding Venetian-style ancient stone walls. Lazy street cats roam the alleys, and it’s also a filming location for Game of Thrones, making every stroll feel full of stories. To get a panoramic view of Kotor Bay, climb the St. John Fortress. The climb involves over a thousand stone steps, but the view from the top is wide and open. Visit early in the morning when there are fewer tourists and the lighting is perfect for photos. In the afternoon, head to the town of Perast and take a boat to two small sea islands. The artificial island church of Our Lady of the Rocks is a classic postcard spot, and the seaside town’s baroque architecture is gentle and soothing. At night, stroll along the old town’s bay, where the sea breeze and starlight create a particularly pleasant atmosphere. 📅Day 2 Budva | pearl of the Adriatic coast Travel by car from Kotor to Budva’s old town, a small city known as the “Little Dubrovnik.” The old town’s streets are filled with ancient churches and handmade shops. Mogren Beach has clear water, perfect for swimming and relaxing. In the afternoon, visit Sveti Stefan Island, a century-old fishing village transformed into a high-end resort and a filming location for a 007 movie. You don’t need to go on the island to capture stunning panoramic shots of the entire island from the shore. In the evening, explore the seaside district and experience the local relaxed nightlife. Be sure to try Montenegro’s local specialty, Njeguški smoked ham, paired with seasonal roasted vegetables for a full-flavored meal. 📅Day 3 Blue Cave sea adventure | perfect return Book a morning boat tour to the Blue Cave, aiming for the earliest departure. Sunlight penetrates the cave’s water, creating rich layers of deep blue. You can snorkel and play in the sea, making this the most breathtaking sea experience of the trip. At noon, enjoy fresh seafood at Tivat Pier, paired with local red wine. In the afternoon, head to Tivat Airport for your return flight. 💡Essential pre-trip tips to avoid pitfalls 1. Visa-free entry rules: Holders of ordinary passports with valid multiple-entry Schengen, US, or UK visas can stay visa-free for 30 days. Without these visas, you can enter visa-free by joining a group tour organized by a qualified travel agency. Be sure to confirm the agency’s credentials in advance. 2. Currency and payment: The euro is used throughout the country. Many small street shops only accept cash, so it’s safer to carry small bills. 3. Best travel seasons: May–June and September have fewer tourists and comfortable weather. July–August is peak beach season. Winter is ideal for mountain skiing vacations. 4. Local transportation: Buses between coastal towns offer great value. Mountain roads have many curves, so driving yourself requires solid mountain driving experience. 5. Travel etiquette: When entering local churches, shoulders and knees must be covered. Book sea tours early to avoid large afternoon groups. Without the crowds of Croatia and with prices much friendlier than Western Europe, Montenegro offers a mix of fjords, turquoise sea, and medieval towns. The Running Man filming locations add extra appeal. It’s a niche destination that’s unlikely to feel crowded or repetitive. Whether for couples on honeymoon or friends traveling together, it’s a perfect fit. If you want to explore a European seaside secret on a budget, Montenegro is definitely worth a trip!

#localrules 📍 Kotor Old Town, Montenegro Kotor Old Town is one of the most beautiful places I've visited in the Balkans, with its medieval streets, stone buildings, and stunning setting beside the Bay of Kotor. However, knowing a few local customs and practical rules can make your visit much smoother. One thing I quickly noticed is that the old town's narrow streets can become very crowded, especially when cruise ships are in port. Visiting early in the morning or later in the evening offers a much more relaxed experience. When exploring churches and religious sites, dress respectfully and keep noise levels low. Many of these buildings are still active places of worship, not just tourist attractions. The old town is best explored on foot, so comfortable shoes are essential. The stone pathways can be uneven and occasionally slippery, especially after rain. If you plan to hike to San Giovanni Fortress, bring water and start early during warmer months. The climb can be challenging, but the panoramic views over the bay are worth the effort. A few local tips:✅ Carry some cash for small purchases.✅ Respect historical buildings and avoid climbing on walls.✅ Support local cafés and family-owned businesses.✅ Be mindful of residents living inside the old town. Kotor's charm comes from its history, culture, and local community. Respecting local customs helps preserve the unique atmosphere that makes this UNESCO-listed destination so special. #LocalRules #KotorOldTown #Montenegro #Balkans #EuropeTravel #TravelMoments

I was so happy that I could now afford not just to visit but to live here, and after just a month, I realized I wanted to escape. We couldn't even last a year, and here's why: 🥐 Food. Groceries in the stores are outrageously expensive, plus everything is in short supply and of dubious quality. You can only buy these cucumbers, these breads, these shrimp or squid. Two or three brands is a real choice. You can't go to the store and buy, for example, duck or rabbit meat; they simply aren't available, nor are quail eggs, any fish caviar, cod liver, and a million other items that seem normal these days. The food selection is extremely basic and repetitive. I don't eat chips, but apparently due to the lack of flavors, I wanted to buy a pack. Five or six varieties are spread out on a huge display, and they all either taste like salt (yes, salt) or hot pepper. Tea is only in bags; you can find it in packages here and there, but not in the supermarket. Prices are a whole other story. A 350-gram pack of frozen squid costs €12, a small loaf of bread costs €1.80, a dozen eggs costs €2.80. And it's the same for everything! Even figs, which grow everywhere and are lying around underfoot because for some reason they're not picked, cost €6-7 per kilogram in season. I'm not exactly poor, but in Montenegro, I started paying attention to prices in stores for the first time, because they don't match the value at all. 🧑🔧 Service. The locals live by the motto "Polako," which means tranquility. But to me, it smacks of laziness and a reluctance to move at all. For example, I'm in Vietnam now, and the people there are actually very calm and pleasant, and this doesn't stop them from working. I was shocked when I scheduled a meeting with a local electrician and he simply didn't show up. I rescheduled it for 10 a.m. the next day, but he showed up at 12 noon and couldn't figure out what was wrong. Almost all the locals I contacted and arranged appointments live like this. The only person who was disciplined was the taxi driver, who never let me down. I understand that this is their mentality; they're in no rush, and I'm not judging it; I'm just sharing my emotions and opinions. 🚘 Transportation. If you don't have your own car, it will be very difficult, if not expensive. There's no public transportation, or rather, it sort of exists, but it doesn't follow a schedule and just sort of exists. You shouldn't count on it, especially if you're not staying for a year like we were, but just for a couple of weeks on vacation. Otherwise, you'll just waste a lot of time waiting. Taxi is the only option, but within the city, it's 5-10 euros per ride. For example, I paid almost 6 euros for 2.5 kilometers in May. If you want to travel around the cities: Budva, Kotor, Tivat, Podgorica... you need to budget 40-60 euros one way. 🍽️ Restaurants. Extremely bland, dishes often lack flavor. I'm so unfussy about food that I rarely go to restaurants where the food isn't tasty. It takes real effort. And I understand that Montenegrin cuisine is definitely not my thing. There are good places, for example, for Italian cuisine, but you have to search for them. The prices, of course, are also a bit unreasonable; even in cafeterias like Food Stories, you'll pay 25-30 euros for a modest lunch for three and a child. If it's something with restaurant-like appeal, the bill will be 35-40. Again, that's modest for the food, the decor, and the service! 🚬 Smoking. I can't say people smoke a lot, it's just that it happens in some really inappropriate places. For example, a doctor taking a chest x-ray of your lungs for suspected pneumonia hides a cigarette behind his back. A passenger on a train, not in the vestibule, but just in the aisle with the windows closed, looks your child in the eyes and exhales smoke in their direction. 💊 Dietary supplements. Life is generally very expensive, as is clear from the points above, but there's something completely out of place about this one. If you're used to prices like iHerb, multiply that by 3, no exaggeration. And you can't order, or rather, you can, but every package is subject to a hefty tax, and it's really not worth it. 🏡 Renting a home. Firstly, there are few long-term offers if you want a new, mold-free apartment. Secondly, the price is simply unjustified. For $1,000, you get about 70 meters of a solid mid-range property. If you're used to good conditions, closer to the sea, it's closer to $1,500-$1,700. If you're staying for a couple of weeks, the price is even higher relative to the number of days spent. Overall, people left a pleasant impression; you feel safe in this country, and the crime rate, especially theft, is very low. The nature is incredibly beautiful, with vibrant colors, and the sea is beautiful and clear. For example, Kotor captivated me with its splendor, and I might even want to return for another week. But after just a month, the rural vibe that permeates all the cities, especially at a million-dollar price, plunges me into melancholy. How are you getting to know Montenegro? 🙂 #montengro #montenegrotravel

#budvaoldtown Budva completely exceeded my expectations. Wandering through the narrow stone streets of the Old Town felt like stepping back in time, while every turn revealed another incredible view of the Bay of Kotor. The contrast between the medieval architecture and the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea makes this one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited. I recommend taking your time to explore the hidden alleys before heading to the waterfront. If you’re feeling energetic, climb towards the fortress for breathtaking panoramic views over the bay. Even without reaching the top, the scenery is unforgettable. If you’re visiting Montenegro, Kotor is an absolute must-see for its history, coastal charm, and spectacular landscapes. I would happily come back again. #Montenegro #Kotor #OldTown #AdriaticSea #EuropeTravel #HiddenGem #TravelPhotography #TripMoments

Kotor is often pictured as a classic Venetian port. However, this city wasn't designed for its looks; it was built as a highly complex fortification hub where every alleyway was meant to disorient the enemy. If you wander off the beaten tourist path, the Old Town reveals itself through unique everyday and religious details. Save this unconventional walking checklist inspired by our stroll. 🏛️ 1. The Leaning Tower and the Medieval Pillory. The route begins at the Sea Gate in the Square of Arms. The main landmark here is the Clock Tower (1602). Following the 1979 earthquake, it took on a noticeable tilt to the west. Right in front of it stands a stone pyramid—an authentic pillory where locals were punished during the Middle Ages. 🌿 2. Secret Monastery Terraces Head northeast toward St. Luke's Square. Step into the inner monastery courtyards, which are rare open green spaces for the city: · Church of St. Clare (18th century): Its bell tower is easily recognizable by its dark dome. Behind the modest facade lies a magnificent marble altar crafted by Francesco Cabianca. · St. Nicholas Cathedral (1909): A monumental Neo-Byzantine temple featuring large dark domes, built on the site of a medieval cathedral that burned down. ⛓️ 3. Skurda River Canyon and Stone Dead-Ends. Make your way to the North Gate (1540) and climb the steps with green railings up to the fortress wall. From here, you'll get a rugged view of the Skurda River gorge, which once served as a natural defensive moat. Heading down the alleys to your right will lead you into a residential area where stone houses are built directly into the sheer cliff face. ⛲ 4. The Gossip Hub and a Hidden Apse. Head over to Karampana Square. In its center sits a carved stone fountain from the 17th century. Up until the early 20th century, this was the city's only source of fresh water, making the square the ultimate "news agency" where all the local gossip originated. If you stand behind the fountain near the oleanders, you'll be treated to a sweeping view of the apse of the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (1166). 🛠️ Practical Information: · Cats Museum: Admission is €1 (all proceeds go toward feeding and treating the city's street cats). · San Giovanni Fortress: The official step climb costs €15. Hiking enthusiasts can bypass the ticket booth for free by taking the "Ladder of Kotor" mountain trail and entering the fortress walls through a small window opening. · Safety: Centuries of foot traffic have polished the historic cobblestones to the point where they are as slippery as ice. Shoes with excellent grip are an absolute must.

Along the dramatic Adriatic coastline, Kotor sits quietly inside a narrow bay surrounded by steep limestone mountains, where land and sea fold into each other like a natural fortress. Although Podgorica is the modern capital of Montenegro, it is Kotor that holds the country’s most powerful sense of history and atmosphere—an old town preserved almost entirely within its medieval walls. Inside the fortified city, narrow cobblestone lanes wind between stone churches, Venetian-style buildings, and small sunlit squares. Every turn feels layered with centuries of maritime trade, Venetian influence, and Balkan heritage. The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon and other historic landmarks stand quietly among homes and cafés that are still in daily use. Above the town, the ancient fortress of San Giovanni climbs the mountainside in a long stone trail. From the top, the view opens dramatically over the Bay of Kotor, where blue water stretches deep into the mountains like a fjord carved by time. 📍 Location: Kotor 🏛️ Known for: Medieval old town, Venetian architecture, mountain-surrounded bay ✨ Highlights: City walls, St. Tryphon Cathedral, fortress hike, Adriatic bay views 💡 Travel tip: Climb the fortress early or late in the day to avoid heat and capture the best light over the bay. Some capitals are modern. Kotor feels timeless—where history is not displayed, but lived inside stone and sea.

If you only have two days in Montenegro, don't try to see the entire country all at once. It's better to build your itinerary around the closest spots: Kotor, Tivat, and a little bit of nature. This way, your trip turns into a beautiful mini-getaway. Day 1 10. 00 AM — Arrival at Tivat Airport After your flight, I wouldn't recommend rushing straight to the old town. First things first: breakfast and coffee. 11. 00 AM–12:00 PM — Breakfast at Bar 11 Bar 11 is located at the Budva–Kotor–Tivat roundabout in the Radanovići area. It's super convenient if you're already heading from the airport toward Kotor or Tivat. I highly recommend ordering from the breakfast menu: a classic egg dish. The portions are quite generous and filling. A nice cup of coffee or tea goes perfectly with it to help you recharge after your journey. By 1:00 PM — Hotel check-in in Tivat Tivat makes for a great home base for a short trip: the airport, Kotor, Perast, and scenic routes to natural spots are all nearby. 1:30 PM–4:00 PM — Trip to Kotor I wouldn't plan a strict point-by-point route here. Just head into the old town and wander through the narrow cobblestone streets. Kotor is literally sandwiched between the water and the mountains, giving it a very unique vibe: you feel like you're strolling through a cozy historic town, but there's this massive cliff towering over you the whole time. If you're feeling adventurous, you can hike up to the fortress overlooking the city. Admission is 15 euros. But even if you skip the hike, Kotor is a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, grabbing a coffee in the square, and a quick recharge. 4. 30 PM — Trip to Perast Perast is best saved for the late afternoon. It's a tiny coastal town that looks absolutely stunning at sunset. You can simply stroll along the waterfront, sit by the water, or take a quick boat ride out to the islands. 5. 30 PM — Dinner at a mountain restaurant After visiting Kotor and Perast, I definitely suggest adding some mountain vibes to your day, not just the sea and old towns. Having dinner surrounded by mountains is the perfect way to cap off your first day. You may have only done a few things, but you'll already have so many incredible impressions that it feels like you've been traveling for days, not just a few hours. Day 2 10. 00 AM — Breakfast on the Tivat promenade Start your day off right: grab a coffee, have breakfast by the water, and take it easy—no need for early-morning tourist marathons. 11. 00 AM–7:00 PM — Exploring nature by rental car For day two, I wouldn't add another old town to the list. Instead, rent a car and head out into nature: check out the viewpoints, drive the mountain roads, or visit a national park. 8:00 PM — Traditional Montenegrin dinner Evening is the time for a hearty dinner. After spending the whole day on the road, don't overcomplicate things—pick a local restaurant and wrap up your trip with some delicious traditional food.

Along the dramatic coastline of Bay of Kotor, mountains plunge sharply into still, dark water, wrapping ancient stone towns in one of the Adriatic’s most photogenic landscapes. And yet — beauty here now comes with company. The lanes of Kotor are dense with cruise passengers, cameras, and guided groups threading through medieval walls. Even quiet Perast, once remembered for its slower rhythm and near-surreal calm, feels increasingly crowded, its elegant waterfront filled with tour boats and tightly packed visitors. The scenery remains undeniable: bell towers, shuttered stone houses, mountain reflections trembling on the bay. But after several Adriatic towns — beautiful façades, polished alleys, familiar Venetian traces — a curious sense of repetition begins to emerge. One town blends into another; the visual memory stays, while the human texture risks fading. Perhaps this is the paradox of heavily photographed places. They are undeniably stunning, yet increasingly experienced through the same routes, the same viewpoints, the same compressed itineraries. Still, there are moments when Kotor Bay quietly breaks through the uniformity: early morning light before the day-trippers arrive, church bells echoing across the water, laundry hanging between old stone walls, a narrow alley unexpectedly empty. Those are the moments that stay. 📍 Location: Bay of Kotor, Montenegro ⛰️ Known for: Fjord-like bay scenery, medieval towns, Venetian heritage 🚤 Highlights: Kotor Old Town, Perast waterfront, mountain-and-sea landscapes 💡 Travel tip: Visit early morning or stay overnight — the bay feels very different before cruise crowds reshape the atmosphere. Kotor Bay is still beautiful. But sometimes, the quieter challenge is finding the memory that belongs uniquely to this place.
