I entered at 17:00, climbed the ramp beside the Kalta Minor minaret, and leaned on the west wall by 17:40. At 18:10 the clay walls — already rose-pink — went copper, the oasis palm rows outside the wall turned black against the field, and the call to maghrib rolled across the roofs. No drone inside the walls (police at the gate), no climbing the minaret outside hours (fine 100,000 UZS). Carry water, the wall wind is hot then cold. Mistake: photographing the minarets at noon — they flatten to beige; the 18:00 side-light is the only truth. Another: exiting at 18:30 thinking the bazaar is open — it shuts, you eat at the gate teahouse (cash only, 15,000 UZS for green tea). Would you sit on the west rampart with the call to prayer behind you, or drop to the teahouse courtyard and trade the height for tilework glow?

#bucketlistdestinations Walking through Khiva for the first time almost feels like entering a film set. Inside Itchan Kala, massive city walls surround a maze of madrasas, minarets, mosques and traditional buildings. The turquoise tiles against the sandy colors of the old city create exactly the kind of image I had imagined when thinking about the Silk Road. Khiva is much smaller than Samarkand or Bukhara, and that's one of its biggest advantages. You can explore most of the historic center on foot without dealing with modern roads cutting through the main sights. I especially liked the city early in the morning and toward sunset, when the light becomes softer and the old walls turn golden. Climbing to one of the viewpoints also shows just how compact the historic city really is. Some places are impressive because of one famous landmark. My husband and I traveled around Uzbekistan entirely on our own—no guided tours, no excursions, and zero advance bookings. Since 90% of locals over 30 speak Russian, we didn’t face any language barriers, though unfortunately, the younger generation doesn't really speak it anymore. Overall, it was easily one of the most enjoyable trips we've ever taken, and since we travel a lot, we definitely have a good point of reference. We visited the cities of Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, and Tashkent. The first three were absolutely magnificent, but Tashkent was a bit underwhelming. Khiva. To get here, we flew from Moscow to Urgench. Right after landing, we dropped our bags at a hotel near the airport. Even though we weren't staying there, they kindly let us use their luggage storage for free. We exchanged some dollars for soms at an ATM, hopped on a bus, and made it to Khiva for just 4,000 Uzbek soms. Four hours was plenty of time to explore the city, climb the fortress, wander through the market, and peek into every hidden corner of the historical center. It happened to be graduation day, so kids were walking around taking photos in traditional outfits. The children were incredibly cheerful and lively, all eager to chat with you. We also got to watch local women weaving carpets. For hardcore museum enthusiasts, there's a two-day pass available at the entrance to the historical district that covers all the paid attractions. Afterward, we headed back to Urgench to catch our flight to Bukhara. Bukhara. A friend of ours met us here. Heads up: this is where we had the absolute best plov in all of Uzbekistan!!! The place is called Mr Salah, and on the first floor, we ordered two types of plov to share among four people—Sofiya and Skhruz—and it was mind-blowing! I highly recommend it. We also strolled through the bazaars and picked up some souvenirs. You can actually watch the artisans crafting their goods right there in the market before selling them. I later tried looking for similar caftans and scarves in Samarkand and Tashkent but had no luck. My advice: do all your shopping (when it comes to chapans and scarves) right here. Samarkand. The Shah-i-Zinda necropolis completely blew us away here. We went in the evening, and it was just breathtaking—the illumination, the crescent moon, the stars, and the stunning mosaics. Registan Square in Samarkand is also incredibly beautiful. We pitched our tent and camped overnight in a local park, and everything went smoothly. There are no restrictions, and nobody bothered us. Tashkent. We checked out the subway, but it wasn't anything spectacular. It was pretty crowded. The architecture of the metro doesn't surpass Moscow's. The Chorsu Bazaar is great, though—it seems you can find pretty much anything there. We stocked up on spices and enjoyed some good haggling) Just a heads-up: there are a lot of Roma people in the city, so keep a closer eye on your belongings. We hitchhiked our way from Bukhara to Samarkand, and then on to Tashkent. Uzbek drivers are quick to pull over; you just have to stick your hand out on the highway, and many will offer you a free ride just for the company and a good chat. One of our drivers turned out to be the owner of an educational language center. We hit it off, and he ended up taking us to his school. We spent some time chatting with the kids during their lesson and gave a mini-lecture. As a thank you, they treated us to plov and kebabs, though of course, we made sure to show our gratitude as well. Even when drivers picked us up and we agreed on a free ride, we always tried to treat them to something so we wouldn't feel indebted. The people here are incredibly hospitable, polite, and joyful. We brought home so many pleasant memories from the trip and would gladly go back in a heartbeat! In May, we hit the strawberry and apricot season! Very tasty and inexpensive.
