My husband and I traveled around Uzbekistan entirely on our own—no guided tours, no excursions, and zero advance bookings. Since 90% of locals over 30 speak Russian, we didn’t face any language barriers, though unfortunately, the younger generation doesn't really speak it anymore. Overall, it was easily one of the most enjoyable trips we've ever taken, and since we travel a lot, we definitely have a good point of reference. We visited the cities of Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, and Tashkent. The first three were absolutely magnificent, but Tashkent was a bit underwhelming. Khiva. To get here, we flew from Moscow to Urgench. Right after landing, we dropped our bags at a hotel near the airport. Even though we weren't staying there, they kindly let us use their luggage storage for free. We exchanged some dollars for soms at an ATM, hopped on a bus, and made it to Khiva for just 4,000 Uzbek soms. Four hours was plenty of time to explore the city, climb the fortress, wander through the market, and peek into every hidden corner of the historical center. It happened to be graduation day, so kids were walking around taking photos in traditional outfits. The children were incredibly cheerful and lively, all eager to chat with you. We also got to watch local women weaving carpets. For hardcore museum enthusiasts, there's a two-day pass available at the entrance to the historical district that covers all the paid attractions. Afterward, we headed back to Urgench to catch our flight to Bukhara. Bukhara. A friend of ours met us here. Heads up: this is where we had the absolute best plov in all of Uzbekistan!!! The place is called Mr Salah, and on the first floor, we ordered two types of plov to share among four people—Sofiya and Skhruz—and it was mind-blowing! I highly recommend it. We also strolled through the bazaars and picked up some souvenirs. You can actually watch the artisans crafting their goods right there in the market before selling them. I later tried looking for similar caftans and scarves in Samarkand and Tashkent but had no luck. My advice: do all your shopping (when it comes to chapans and scarves) right here. Samarkand. The Shah-i-Zinda necropolis completely blew us away here. We went in the evening, and it was just breathtaking—the illumination, the crescent moon, the stars, and the stunning mosaics. Registan Square in Samarkand is also incredibly beautiful. We pitched our tent and camped overnight in a local park, and everything went smoothly. There are no restrictions, and nobody bothered us. Tashkent. We checked out the subway, but it wasn't anything spectacular. It was pretty crowded. The architecture of the metro doesn't surpass Moscow's. The Chorsu Bazaar is great, though—it seems you can find pretty much anything there. We stocked up on spices and enjoyed some good haggling) Just a heads-up: there are a lot of Roma people in the city, so keep a closer eye on your belongings. We hitchhiked our way from Bukhara to Samarkand, and then on to Tashkent. Uzbek drivers are quick to pull over; you just have to stick your hand out on the highway, and many will offer you a free ride just for the company and a good chat. One of our drivers turned out to be the owner of an educational language center. We hit it off, and he ended up taking us to his school. We spent some time chatting with the kids during their lesson and gave a mini-lecture. As a thank you, they treated us to plov and kebabs, though of course, we made sure to show our gratitude as well. My last day in Khiva. I took one final walk in the morning. The palace tiles and the carved columns were magnificent. There was also a performance by some ladies 🎶, which made the atmosphere even more wonderful. After saying goodbye to Khiva, I was taken to Urgench Airport and flew to Bukhara. It took less than an hour. From Bukhara Airport to the city, I used Yandex. I’m getting used to how it works. The hotel is in a great location, very close to the center, and it has extremely good reviews. There was road construction in front of the hotel, so you couldn’t really tell from the outside, but inside it was very clean and had a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The young man at reception is studying Japanese. He likes manga and apparently loves One Piece. The room I was shown to was spacious, with big windows. I headed into town right away. I went to Chor Minor, the mosque farthest from the center. I kept debating whether to take a ride or walk, but since it’s a city with lots of cats, I ended up looking for cats along the way and arrived there easily enough. While I was sitting on a bench at the shop right in front of it, a kitten climbed onto my lap. I couldn’t move. A neighborhood boy came over, and we played with the cat together and became cat friends. Also, the shop right in front of the minaret is quite interesting. It sells antiques and old items, but everything makes you wonder, “Where on earth did this come from?!” There were medals, military uniforms, and even someone’s passport. Personally, I felt nostalgic about Misha, the bear mascot of the Moscow Olympics, and thought it was so cute 💕 After that, I went back to Lyabi-Hauz, the pond with the fountain, and had a late lunch. I ended up ordering quite a lot, but I finished it all. After that, I headed toward the Ark Fortress. The city walls were so impressive that instead of going inside, I just stood there in the square in front of the fortress, admiring them. In the square out front, there were camel rides and unusual bicycles. Families were happily enjoying them. At night, I explored the market. It felt even more exotic after dark. I wandered around looking at handwoven fabrics.

NURULLABAY PALACE🕍. Having conquered Khiva, Russia left the khan with only the Khorezm oasis on the left bank of the Amu Darya. Having lost hope, the Khiva khan began building luxurious palaces, of which five or seven accumulated in Khiva and its environs over three centuries of its role as capital. The NURULLABAY PALACE, or Palace of the Most Serene Lord, although the most recent in Khiva, is the closest to the center, a five-minute walk from the main entrance to Ichan-Kala. Nurullabay is laid out similarly to Tash-Khauli—a throne room, a courtroom, and a harem (the living quarters of the palace), only larger and more substantial. The palace was recently restored by a bank (it is located nearby), and it now belongs to the bank, not to the administration that oversees Ichan-Kala. Therefore, the administration does not advertise the palace. Tourists wander around the old city, but they don't rush beyond the gates and don't know about the palace. We were the only ones there! As a result, the Nurullabai Palace has become my favorite attraction in all of Uzbekistan! I highly recommend it. Some of the interiors were designed according to Russian sketches; at least some of the furnishings were brought from St. Petersburg, and, for example, the chandeliers were a gift to the khan from Nicholas II himself. You can see angels on the ceiling—which is considered a great liberty among Muslims. But the most beautiful thing in the khan's reception room is the Dutch stoves, whose tiles are so unlike the creations of local artisans. THE MINARETS OF KHIVA. Khiva is an oasis surrounded by two deserts. This city is approximately 2,526 years old! A chain of minarets stretches from west to east through Ichan-Kala and Dishan-Kala (the outer city), creating Khiva's unique silhouette. According to one theory, these slender towers served as beacons for trade caravans along the Silk Road, and later became religious buildings for calling Muslims to prayer. Khiva's most recognizable minaret is the wide and squat Kalta Minar, with its colorful patterns on a turquoise background. It is very photogenic, entirely covered in tiles. You will definitely not find anything like it in all of Uzbekistan! You cannot enter the minaret's interior. It was conceived as the tallest structure, offering a view of Bukhara, but ironically, it only reached 29 meters: the ruler who initiated the century-long construction project died, and there was no money to continue the work. Khiva's tallest minaret is the elegant Islam Khoja, rising almost 57 meters. It is the second tallest minaret in Central Asia. Only the Kutlug-Timur Minaret in Urgench is taller, and slightly lower is the Kalyan Minaret in Bukhara. Like most Khorezm minarets, it tapers toward the top and is crowned with a multicolored rotunda. In short, unique structures! Khiva - Bukhara - Samarkand. We visited these three completely different cities in this order, and I didn't regret it at all! But, let's take each one in turn! If you want to soak up the spirit of history, be sure to start with Khiva, an open-air museum that was once the heart of the Khorezm Khanate. This is a place where great human history was made, where trade caravans traveled along the Great Silk Road, where the tales of the Arabian Nights come to life, where, even in the 21st century, cute donkeys harnessed to carts still trudge along asphalt roads, just as they did centuries ago, where harvests ripen right in the courtyards of the mahalla, and where Russians are treated with respect (this applies, incidentally, to all of Uzbekistan)! This is a unique city; you won't find another like it. For me personally, it was one of the most powerful experiences; the city truly impressed me, above all, with its authenticity and atmosphere. We spent four days here, but I would have stayed longer... Most of the sights have survived to this day almost in their original form! All of this is concentrated in the inner city (Ichan-Kale); its outer part (Dishan-Kale) is not as well preserved. According to legend, the city was founded around a well dug by one of Noah's sons! Khiva also specializes in fish! Yes! I ate my fill of fish here!!! They specially breed it, despite the salt marshes all around... Khiva isn't samsa or pilaf—it's carp 👍!

Day 4: Before breakfast, I went for a morning walk. The air in the still-quiet town was fresh, and the sunlight was already illuminating the streets. In an open space resembling a park, there was a monument depicting an artisan. At the entrance of a minaret, two kittens were playfully wrestling. Since I have the whole day today and tomorrow to stay here, I can wander around the town as much as I like. During the hot hours, I can take a nap at the accommodation. Breakfast at the accommodation was served in the dining room. This is all for just one person! I was delighted to try a variety of dishes in small portions. Especially the stir-fried carrots 🥕, which had a delicious garlic flavor. Among the places I visited today, the most impressive was the Pahlavan Mahmud Mausoleum dedicated to a hero. The delicate tiles and the calculated way the light entered made it a fitting mausoleum for a revered figure. After a nap, I had a late lunch at Mirzabonti House. I also used the ATM there. The ATMs inside the store were cleaner and felt safer than those in the streets. I had the local specialty? Pumpkin soup and the pasta I ate yesterday here as well. For drinks, of course, I chose mojito! I love the refreshing flavor and appearance of mojitos! Wanting to see the sunset from the city walls, I paid the staff to open the entrance to the stairs leading up the walls. The earthen walls gave a raw sense of history. The silhouette against the sunset was beautiful. The night walk ended on the hotel rooftop💕 I absolutely love this rooftop.
