Kasukabe, located just outside of Tokyo, is an absolute must-visit destination for hardcore Crayon Shin-chan fans~ It's where the creator of Shin-chan lived and the actual real-life setting of the series!! When you arrive at Kasukabe Station, the Shin-chan theme song plays, and it's just too adorable. You can spot characters from the show all over the place—where I hopped off, I even saw Himawari! Step out of the station, and the streets are totally filled with Shin-chan vibes! You'll see Shin-chan wrapped buses driving by, and there's even a Shin-chan poster right outside the police box! Head over to the Kasukabe City Tourist Information Center in front of the station to grab a stamp tour pamphlet, and they even had them in Korean. If you visit the Kasukabe City Hall, you can actually see the official resident registration card for Shin-chan's family. Unfortunately, it was a national holiday in Japan on the day I went, so it was closed ㅠㅠ (Word has it that since the City Hall relocated to a new building, the family's resident registration card is no longer on display... But they say there are still Shin-chan statues and a mini-exhibition space inside and outside the building, so keep that in mind when you visit!) LaLa garden KASUKABE is pretty much a local shopping mall~ Up on the 3rd floor, you'll find the Buri Buri Cinema Studio. The whole place is decked out in themes from the Shin-chan movies, and they even display key props(?) from each film!! There are statues of the whole family and a bunch of great photo spots. For a huge fan, it totally feels like a holy pilgrimage!! There's a merch shop right next door too, which was super fun to browse! Also, the Ito-Yokado Kasukabe branch—famous as the real-life "Action Department Store"—sadly closed down in 2024... It was just a regular neighborhood grocery store, but they had a cute little Shin-chan display and sold official merch. Such a huge bummer ㅠㅠㅠ Kasukabe is a lot quieter and less crowded than Tokyo, which gives it its own unique, laid-back charm. If you love Crayon Shin-chan, I highly recommend checking it out~~
