We stayed at the Saga New Otani Hotel this time, and the experience was excellent! Our itinerary was mainly spread over two days, with the third day spent purely at the airport preparing for departure. Day 1: We landed at 10:30 AM and arrived at the hotel to drop off our luggage before 12:00 PM. We then visited nearby attractions such as Saga Castle Ruins and a shrine. For lunch, we ate near Saga Station, and in the afternoon, we took a train to Karatsu City. In the evening, we returned to Saga and went shopping and dining at You Me Town. Day 2: After having breakfast at a convenience store, we headed to Hizen-Kashima Station and took a bus to Yutoku Inari Shrine. We spent the afternoon exploring the shrine before returning to Saga, where we shopped and had dinner in the city center before heading back to the hotel.

#SeptemberDestinations2025 Red represents the warmth of spring and symbolizes growth, hope, and the vitality of life. Documents indicate that during the Edo period, offering red torii gates was a form of prayer and fulfillment, and this custom has been passed down ever since. We departed from Saga Station and took the JR train to Hizen Kashima Station. From there, we took a 20-minute bus to Yutoku Inari Station. The shrine is accessible via the approach to the shrine. During weekdays, there were few tourists, and most of the shops along the approach were closed. Upon entering the shrine, the vermilion-colored buildings caught our eye. The shrine grounds are extensive, and you can ascend the stairs or take the elevator to the main hall, the Honden, 18 meters above the ground. You can also continue up the path to the summit for breathtaking views of the mountains and sea. I was particularly impressed by the wooden structure of the Honden, nestled against the hillside. It resembled a replica of Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto. While not as majestic, the vermilion color was just as impressive! In Japan, there are many Inari shrines like the Tudigong Temple in Taiwan, but not many are as spectacular as this one. If you have already come to Kyushu for a trip, you might as well come here for a visit!

#slowtraveling I took the JR Nagasaki Main Line from Hakata to Hizen-Kashima (about an hour, ~1,500 yen, Suica accepted but I paid cash at the machine to keep the receipt), then the Yutoku bus to the terminus (15 minutes, 300 yen, exact change only — the driver doesn’t make change). The shrine front town wakes up slowly: by 8:10 a.m. the inari-zushi shops were already steaming rice, but the hill above was empty. Yutoku is one of Japan’s three great Inari shrines, founded 1687, and the hillside approach is the part most day-trippers skip. They bow at the tower gate, buy a charm, leave. Don’t. The real walk is the 20-minute climb to the inner sanctuary: twin rows of vermilion torii, then a shift to mossy stone steps and a slope that turns into a mountain trail. Walking sticks sit in a basket at the bend — take one. Sneakers, not sandals; after rain the cobbles near the main hall are slick. The garden (200 yen) and museum (300 yen) take coins, and the goshuin office opens at 8:30 (regular 500 yen, seasonal 800). I climbed in November on a weekday — no one else on the upper torii, just wind chimes and the Ariake Sea flat below. The inner shrine is plain compared to the gold main hall, and that’s the point: the climb is the prayer. Common mistake: arriving by car at 10 a.m. on a foliage weekend — 3,000 spaces fill fast, though they’re free. I went by train and had the hill. Cash only at every stall; the ATM in Kashima is a 10-minute walk from the station and eats some foreign cards. Would you rather have the vermilion queue photo, or 20 minutes of wet stone and silence above it? The hill answered for me.

📅 Travel Itinerary Day 1: A drive from Fukuoka to Saga. First, we enjoyed a ninja show and activities at "Hizen Yumekaido Ninja Village," where even adults could relive their childhood. For lunch, we went to "Yokocho," a popular restaurant in Ureshino Onsen famous for its "Onsen Yudofu" (hot spring tofu). The melt-in-your-mouth texture of the Yudofu was exquisite, a must-try dish when visiting Ureshino. Afterwards, we stayed overnight at Ureshino Onsen and relaxed in the smooth, skin-beautifying hot spring water. Day 2: A drive towards Kashima and Tara. For lunch, we had grilled crab at "Takezaki Kaisan." The Takezaki crab, grilled over charcoal, was fragrant, packed with meat, and intensely sweet. We were able to fully enjoy the deliciousness of the ingredients. Eating while gazing at the sea was also very pleasant, and we spent a luxurious time in Saga. Day 2: A drive towards Kashima and Tara. For lunch, we had grilled crab at "Takezaki Kaisan." The Gohonen Temple is located on a towering red suspended stage, which looks a bit like Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto from a distance😯. The gorgeous carvings and lacquer art in the temple are unbeatable. It's very impressive at first glance!
