【Kőszeg / Western Hungary】 〜Just like a fairy tale! A hidden gem where colorful streetscapes meet rich history〜 I took a trip out from Budapest to visit Kőszeg, a historic town nestled near the Austrian border! Spending a relaxing moment on a bench here felt truly luxurious 🕊️✨ 📍 2. Heading to Jurisics Castle accompanied by song I walked through the "Sgraffitós-ház" gate from the square toward the castle. Just then, I heard beautiful singing coming from the church, which was so soothing... ☺️ The castle, surrounded by thick stone walls, exudes history and makes you feel as though you've slipped back into the Middle Ages 🏰 📍 3. A breathtaking viewpoint overlooking the town About a 30-minute walk uphill from the square! After a bit of a workout, a stunning panoramic view awaited, offering a full look at Kőszeg’s charming orange-roofed cityscape. A must-see for view lovers! 📍 4. The heartwarming safety of the town While walking, I noticed "honesty stalls" selling vegetables, fruits, and handmade dolls. It's a system where you just put money in a box to buy what you want. This peaceful and warm atmosphere really showed how safe the town is, making me love it even more ☺️ 📍 5. Ending the stroll with fresh bread and coffee ☕️ After all that walking, I headed back to the square to a cafe with an attached bakery. Everyone goes to Hallstatt. The postcard village with the swans and the church spire. I saw the photos. I saw the crowds. And I made a decision. I stayed across the lake. A chamois watched me from a rock ledge. The clouds sat below me in the valley. Across the lake, I could see the crowds moving through Hallstatt's narrow street. Paddled out onto the water. The mountains rose straight up from the shore on every side. I stopped in the middle of the lake and let the kayak drift. The swans were still there. The church still reflected in the water. But now it was peaceful. Now it was beautiful. 📍 Lake Gosau, Austria I stumbled upon this lake by chance on my way to Hallstatt with zero expectations, but it was actually even more stunning and better than Hallstatt itself! 👍🏻 I visited by rental car, but I think there are many tours available these days, so I highly recommend a tour if you can't rent a car!!!! The trekking courses are also great, and I'm so bummed I didn't get to try them ㅠㅠ,, You must visit if you go to Austria! Oh, and for those renting a car, you don't have to worry because the parking lot is well-organized. 🍯 Tip. There's only one hotel & restaurant at Lake Gosau—you have to try the sausage and schnitzel! The tomato pasta was also delicious ㅠㅠ All my family members loved it so much.

It's a cog railway, designed specifically to climb steep mountain terrain. As the train slowly makes its way uphill, the landscape outside the window changes. The village disappears behind you. Forests become thicker. Meadows begin opening up. And the mountains seem to get closer. The train doesn't rush. And honestly, that's part of the experience. You have time to sit back, look through the window and watch Austria slowly unfold below you. 🌲 The Journey Is Just as Beautiful as the Destination One thing I loved about Schafberg was that the train ride itself never felt like just transportation. Every section of the journey offers a different view. At lower elevations, you see forests and traditional alpine landscapes. Higher up, the scenery becomes more open. The mountains stretch farther into the distance. And suddenly, you start seeing the lakes below. That's when the journey becomes truly spectacular. 🌊 Three Lakes From Above The summit area is famous for its incredible panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see several lakes spread across the surrounding landscape, including Lake Wolfgang, Lake Mondsee and Lake Attersee. From the mountain, they look almost like giant mirrors between the green hills and mountains. It was one of those views where I kept trying to understand how the landscape could possibly look this perfect. Blue lakes. Green forests. Mountain peaks. Tiny villages far below. Everything feels incredibly peaceful. 📸 The View From the Top Is Worth the Journey When the train finally reaches the upper station, you realize why people make the journey. The view opens up in almost every direction. The lakes look tiny. The surrounding peaks stretch toward the horizon. And the clouds seem much closer than they did down in the valley. Some of my favourite views included: ✔ Lake Wolfgang – deep blue water surrounded by mountains ✔ Lake Mondsee – beautiful alpine scenery stretching into the distance ✔ Lake Attersee – another incredible lake visible from the mountain ✔ Alpine meadows – peaceful green landscapes around the summit ✔ Mountain peaks – dramatic panoramic views in every direction ✔ Schafberg summit – the perfect place to stop and simply take it all in Honestly, it's difficult to take a bad photo here. 🥾 Don't Just Get Off the Train and Leave Once you arrive at the top, don't immediately head back down. Take some time to walk around. The summit area offers several viewpoints, and even a short walk can lead to completely different perspectives. One moment you're looking toward the lakes. Turn around and you're facing another mountain range. Walk a little further and suddenly the clouds are drifting below you. This is one of those places where having extra time makes the experience much better. ☁️ When the Clouds Move In Of course, mountain weather can change quickly. One minute you can have a clear panoramic view... and a little later, clouds can roll across the summit. At first, I was disappointed. But then I realized it created a completely different atmosphere. The mountains disappear into the mist. The landscape becomes quiet. And the summit suddenly feels mysterious and almost dreamlike. So even if the weather isn't perfect, don't assume the experience is ruined. Sometimes the clouds make the mountain even more beautiful. 🌿 The Austrian Alps Feel Different Up Here After exploring Salzburg and Hallstatt, Schafberg gave me a completely different perspective on the region. From the streets of Salzburg, the mountains are something you look toward. From Hallstatt, they're part of the village landscape. But from Schafberg, you're looking down at the entire alpine world. Lakes, villages, forests and mountains all become part of one giant panorama. It's a completely different way to experience Austria. 🚂 The Ride Down Is Beautiful Too One of the easiest mistakes would be thinking that the best part is only the journey up. The ride back down offers a completely different perspective. Instead of looking toward the summit, you're now looking toward the lakes and valleys below. The train slowly descends through the landscape. And as you get lower, the villages gradually become larger again. It's almost like watching the scenery reverse itself. 🌅 Try to Choose a Clear Day If your main reason for visiting Schafberg is the panoramic view, weather matters. A clear day can make an enormous difference. When the skies are open, you can see much farther across the lakes and surrounding mountains. Early morning can also be beautiful, especially when the landscape is still quiet and the air is clear. But even on a partly cloudy day, the scenery can still be spectacular. My advice? Check the mountain weather before you go, but don't be discouraged by a few clouds. 🏡 St. Wolfgang Is Worth Exploring Too Don't forget about the town at the bottom of the mountain. St. Wolfgang is beautiful in its own right. The lakeside setting, traditional architecture and relaxed atmosphere make it a lovely place to spend some time before or after the train ride. Walk through the old streets. Have a coffee. Look at the lake. And watch the mountains rising behind the town. It makes the entire Schafberg experience feel like a complete alpine day trip rather than simply a train ride. 📸 Every Part of the Journey Is Photogenic Some of my favourite moments were: 🚂 Watching the little train climb through the mountains 🌲 Looking through the carriage window at the alpine forests 🌊 Seeing Lake Wolfgang appear below 🏔️ Reaching the summit and seeing the mountains stretch into the distance ☁️ Watching clouds drift around the peaks 🥾 Walking around the summit viewpoints 🏡 Returning to St. Wolfgang and seeing the lake from below It's the kind of experience where you end up taking far more photos than you expected. ❤️ The Train Ride Was the Memory What I loved most about Schafberg wasn't simply reaching the top. It was the journey. Sitting inside that little mountain train. Watching the landscape slowly change. Seeing the lakes appear beneath the mountains. And realizing that every few minutes, the view outside the window had become even more beautiful. Sometimes the journey really is the destination. 💡 My Travel Tips 📍 Start your journey from St. Wolfgang. 🚂 Take the Schafberg Railway for the full alpine experience. 🌤️ Check the mountain weather before your visit—the summit views depend heavily on visibility. 📸 Sit by the window if possible; the views along the route are part of the experience. 🥾 Bring comfortable shoes if you plan to walk around the summit. 🧥 Bring an extra layer—the temperature can be much cooler at the top. 🌊 Stay long enough to enjoy the panoramic lake views. 🏡 Leave some time to explore St. Wolfgang before or after your train ride. ⏰ Give yourself half a day or more so you don't have to rush the experience. ❤️ Final Thoughts I came to Schafberg expecting a scenic mountain train ride. But it turned out to be so much more. The little train. The alpine forests. The green meadows. The dramatic mountain peaks. And finally, the incredible sight of lakes stretching across the landscape far below. It was one of those travel experiences where the photos don't quite capture the feeling of actually being there. If you're travelling around Salzburg, Hallstatt or the Austrian Lake District, Schafberg is an experience I'd definitely add to the journey. Come for the little train. Stay for the mountain views. Look down at the lakes. Take your time at the summit. And enjoy the ride. Because sometimes you don't need to climb a mountain yourself to experience the Alps. At 7:30 AM, strolling through Old Town Square feels like stepping into a different world. Without the midday crowds that feel like a busy market, the "Heart of Europe" reveals its most authentic and serene classical soul. In the center stands the bronze statue of Jan Hus, while the dark, soot-stained Gothic twin towers of the Church of Our Lady before Týn pierce the sky. Often called the "Devil's Church," they look just like medieval wizards in pointed hats. Nearby, St. Nicholas Church stands elegant and white, with pigeons circling beneath its Baroque dome. The main attraction is the Old Town Hall’s Astronomical Clock, dating back to 1410. Its upper dial tracks the sun, moon, and stars against a blue sky, while the lower calendar dial depicts scenes of medieval life. Every hour, the windows open as the Twelve Apostles rotate to strike the hour, their chimes echoing across the quiet, cobblestone streets. Right by the square is the famous restaurant Terasa U Prince. We ordered some crispy fries and juice for the little one, while we sat on the flower-lined terrace under a parasol. With the Astronomical Clock and Týn Church practically within reach and a gentle breeze blowing, it was the perfect way to enjoy a meal with a view. 💡 Old Town Square Practical Guide: Beat the Crowds: I highly recommend arriving before 8:00 AM to capture panoramic shots of the empty square and the circling pigeons; Old Town Hall Tower: Tickets are 250 Kč. You can take the elevator to the top of the 69-meter tower for a breathtaking 360-degree view; Terasa U Prince: Located on the top floor of Hotel U Prince. The terrace is divided into a dining area and a separate viewing area.
