Something I discovered upon visiting Kochi is the culture of eating breakfast, known as "Morning," at local coffee shops (kissaten). Realizing this is a custom deeply ingrained in daily life here, I did a little digging. It turns out that Kochi is a "coffee shop prefecture"—in fact, some surveys have ranked it first in Japan for the number of coffee shops per 1,000 residents! Even today, Kochi Prefecture promotes its coffee shops and "Morning" specials as a unique regional culture. So, why did coffee shop culture flourish so much in Kochi? While there isn’t one definitive answer, several factors are often cited. These include a high number of working women leading to a strong dining-out culture, coffee shops serving as community hubs for locals to socialize, and providing a place for early-morning workers like fishermen to grab a hearty breakfast after their shifts. A Kochi "Morning" isn't just coffee and toast. It often includes eggs, salad, spaghetti, and fruit. Some places even offer traditional Japanese-style breakfasts! At "Akai Mi" in Kami City, the spot I visited this time, I enjoyed a single plate loaded with toast, a boiled egg, Napolitan spaghetti, and fresh fruit. Instead of being a flashy "Instagrammable" meal, it’s a wholesome breakfast where you can enjoy a little bit of everything to start your day right. It was a wonderful and incredibly delicious morning meal. The cozy, nostalgic atmosphere of a classic Japanese coffee shop, filled with locals relaxing and starting their day, left a lasting impression on me. Since I visited on August 31, 2024, the menu, offerings, and prices shown in the photos reflect that date and may have changed since. Beyond just visiting tourist attractions, I highly recommend having breakfast at a neighborhood coffee shop frequented by locals. Locals painted the trunk of the old tree with cute cartoon patterns using natural pigments. Chubby kittens and little guitarists spread along the bark's texture without ruining the old tree's original feel at all. Instead, it adds a lot of childlike charm to the sturdy tree. A few kids just out of school gather around the tree with their backpacks, using colored pens to draw their favorite animals in the reserved blank spaces. The old tree is like an infinite canvas, silently embracing the imagination of generations of children. Passing travelers can also leave their own little marks in the empty spots without worrying about being scolded; everyone tacitly agrees that this is a collaborative creation. This 11-day trip to Shikoku, Japan, started from Osaka. All flights and hotels were booked seamlessly through Trip.com, offering a quick and easy booking process. Shikoku has become a new travel hotspot in Japan in recent years, especially popular for self-driving tours. It allows travelers to deeply experience the natural beauty and immerse themselves in the local culture. On April 12th, we departed from Hong Kong and arrived at Kansai International Airport. From there, we took the Nankai RAPIT Express directly to Osaka city center. The first night was spent at Sanrriott Shinsaibashi, conveniently located near restaurants and shopping malls. On the second day, we indulged in shopping at Shinsaibashi, enjoyed crab dishes at Dotonbori, and admired the light art at teamLab Botanical Garden in the evening. The third day coincided with the second day of the Expo 2025 Osaka opening. We specifically planned a visit to explore the China Pavilion, Gundam Pavilion, and Japan Lifestyle Pavilion, experiencing the cultural features and cutting-edge technologies of different countries firsthand—it was truly impressive. On the fourth day, we reserved a full day to enjoy Universal Studios Japan. We pre-purchased Fast Passes for Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World through Trip.com. Although the price was slightly higher than regular tickets, it saved us from long queues. Popular attractions like Super Mario were easily accessible, making the experience more enjoyable and time-efficient. On the fifth day, we drove for two hours from Osaka to Suzuka Circuit. Strawberry picking on Awaji Island was particularly memorable—not only could we pick strawberries ourselves, but we also enjoyed fresh strawberries with hot coffee right in the strawberry field, which was incredibly relaxing. We then headed to Kotohira Onsen and stayed at the newly opened Oyado Shikishima-kan. The highlight was the four free private baths available for reservation, allowing us to fully enjoy the hot spring experience. Later, we visited the Cloud Edge Temple Mountain Park, where the Sky Swing and Sky Frame are must-tries. The panoramic view from the mountaintop was breathtaking and romantic, perfect for taking photos. We also explored Oboke Gorge and the Double Vine Bridges of Iya Valley, marveling at Shikoku's magnificent gorges and pristine forest landscapes. At Matsuyama Castle, visitors could dress up in samurai costumes for free and take photos, fully immersing themselves in the local historical and cultural atmosphere. For accommodation near Dogo Onsen, we chose the newly opened Furuyu-en Haruka Ryokan, located right behind the Dogo Onsen Honkan. The ryokan offered modern and comfortable facilities, and the quality of the hot springs was excellent. As for the legendary bathhouse in "Spirited Away," which was inspired by Dogo Onsen, it is actually just a regular hot spring. There's no need to pay for entry; taking photos outside is sufficient. Lastly, we visited Ryugado Cave, one of Japan's three major limestone caves. The stalactite formations inside were spectacular and mysterious, leaving a lasting impression. In the final days, we went on a shopping spree at Kobe Mitsui Outlet and returned to Osaka to continue enjoying various local delicacies. The stalactites illuminated by the light were formed over many years, and each one felt the power of nature. Especially when carefully navigating between the stalactites, it felt like exploring the interior of the Earth, and the excitement was unstoppable. At one point, there was a scene where we had to crawl through a narrow rock tunnel, making us feel like an expedition team. There were many thrilling moments that you can't usually experience in regular sightseeing, and it was well worth the challenge. The footing inside the cave was slippery, so we had to proceed carefully, but the sense of accomplishment when we reached the goal was exceptional. At the end of the tour, we came out into a wide space inside the cave and were able to see a fantastic sight. A world completely different from the surface spread out, and it felt like we had come to another dimension. The guide's explanations were also thorough, and it was interesting to learn about the history and formation of Ryugado Cave. The caving experience at Ryugado Cave was a wonderful adventure full of thrills and excitement that you can't experience in regular sightseeing. It is a spot that I would definitely recommend to those who want to feel the mysteries of nature with their whole body and take on new challenges.
