If you're heading to Kotoku-in from Kamakura Station, I highly recommend taking the bus—it only takes a few minutes. While you can take the Enoden line to Hase Station, you'll have to walk for over ten minutes in the scorching sun, which can be quite brutal in the summer. Food and drinks aren't allowed inside the temple grounds. You’ll need to queue for tickets, but they’re quite affordable at just 300 yen for adults. As soon as you step into the courtyard, a sense of solemnity and peace washes over you. Your pace naturally slows down, and you start to feel calm and relaxed. For just 50 yen, you can actually go inside the Great Buddha itself. My daughter found it too hot and chose to stay in the shade, and once I stepped inside, I quickly saw why—it’s not well-ventilated, and you’ll start sweating almost immediately. Still, seeing the historical marks and the craftsmanship from centuries ago was fascinating. Even a brief visit felt completely worth it. My favorite spot was the woods in the backyard. While the front courtyard is baked in sunlight, the backyard is densely shaded and much cooler. People were resting there, naturally keeping their voices low out of respect for the temple’s serene atmosphere. With over 800 years of history, the Kamakura Great Buddha made me wonder how it compares to the Baguashan or Fo Guang Shan Buddhas in Taiwan. I later discovered that the Baguashan Great Buddha was actually modeled after this one, which is a cool connection. There’s also a pair of giant straw sandals on display that are quite a sight to see. It’s truly a place worth visiting. For those caught up in the rush of city life, the Kamakura Great Buddha offers a quiet spiritual cleansing, helping you find a moment of inner peace even under the blazing summer sun.

Beyond Tokyo's hustle and bustle, visiting Kamakura turned out to be one of my all-time favorite decisions. With its stunning sea views and a breathtaking overlook of Mount Fuji, this city offers a completely different and refreshing vibe. Don't miss the famous Slam Dunk train station or the charming Enoden train. During my trip, I discovered a real gem—a beautiful temple highly recommended by many travelers. Hokokuji Temple, famous for its lush bamboo groves, delicious matcha, and tranquil moments, is a peaceful retreat tucked away in Kamakura. Strolling along the garden paths beneath the vibrant green canopy, you can listen to the soothing sounds of water and birds, creating a perfect escape from busy life. My absolute favorite experience was relaxing at Kyukoan teahouse, sipping warm matcha and enjoying traditional sweets while gazing out over the bamboo garden. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ Sometimes, the most memorable travel moments are simply about sitting back and soaking it all in. 🍵 Opening hours: 9am–4pm. Matcha ticket sales end at 3.30pm and may pause when busy. 💡 Travel tips · Aim for opening time on a weekday for a quieter visit. · Allow around 45–60 minutes, longer if you want to linger over tea. · Buy your matcha ticket together with admission at the entrance. · Wear shoes with good grip, especially after rain, and keep your voice low to preserve the peaceful atmosphere. #localdiscoveries A Cosy Sweet Potato Café in a Quiet Corner of Kamakura 🍠 While exploring Kamakura, we came across Oimo Cafe Canary, a small sweet potato café tucked away in a quiet back alley just off Komachi-dori. The soft canary-yellow exterior immediately caught our attention, and stepping inside feels a little like going back in time. The café has a retro-rustic, Showa-era character, with a warm and cosy atmosphere that makes it easy to slow down for a while after walking around the busy streets of Kamakura. We tried the sweet potato shaved ice, which came topped with soft mochi and sweet red beans, with a separate sweet potato sauce on the side. The shaved ice itself was light and fluffy, while the sweet potato sauce added a richer, naturally sweet flavour. With the chewy mochi and red beans, there was plenty of texture in each bite without making the dessert feel too heavy. We liked that the sauce came separately too, so we could add as much as we wanted. The menu goes beyond shaved ice, with other Japanese-style desserts including layered parfaits and anmitsu. So if you enjoy traditional Japanese sweets, there are quite a few things here that we'd want to try on another visit. A few things to know before you go: · The café is in a quieter back alley just off Komachi-dori, so it feels more relaxed than the main shopping street. · The space is small and cosy, so seating can be limited during busy periods. · The sweet potato shaved ice is a good pick if you want something light and refreshing. · Try adding the sweet potato sauce gradually so you can adjust the sweetness to your liking. · The café has become more popular after being featured on TV, so expect more crowds during peak hours. · It's a nice place to take a slower break rather than somewhere to rush through dessert before moving on. I actually preferred Kamakura's bamboo garden being smaller than I expected. There isn't an endless forest to work through; you follow a short path between incredibly tall bamboo, occasionally look straight up and realize almost all the sunlight has disappeared behind the leaves. It was quiet enough to hear the bamboo moving whenever the wind picked up, which somehow stayed with me more than the photographs. The little mossy corners and old stone caves beyond the grove also made it feel less manicured than I expected. What I'd definitely do again is stop for matcha at Kyuko-an rather than walk straight back out. The seats look directly into the bamboo, and sitting there with tea completely changes the pace of what could otherwise be quite a short visit. Just a 5-minute walk from Enoden Hase Station, "paso" is a cafe that beautifully preserves the architecture of a traditional Japanese house. From the glass-fronted counter, you can look out over the courtyard and even catch a glimpse of the ocean in the distance. Since it’s quiet in the early morning, I enjoyed a perfectly peaceful and relaxing time. For their hand-drip coffee, you can select your beans based on your favorite aroma. It was honestly the fruitiest and most refreshing cup I've ever had. The seasonal dessert—toast topped with honey-marinated lemons and ice cream—was absolutely delicious and perfect for the summer heat. After a lot of studying and planning, I came up with this Mr Fuji itinerary that ended up being the best possible, now I'm here to share it with everyone to make your planning a bit easier! I started by heading to Fuji city, explored there a bit before taking a bus to Fujinomiya for the night, that's the closest city to Fuji-san and the best place to enjoy sunrise views! After your night there, start your day early, enjoy the sunrise views and then take an early bus Kawaguchi lake, along the way you'll pass Lake Motosu and Shoji, for some completely crowd free views of Fuji above their calm and clear waters. Once reached Kawaguchi lake, rent a bike or e-bike and ride around the lake, you can stop along the way for lunch and to take a break at a lovely cafe, I enjoyed it so much that I ended up ringing along the lake twice!!! Take your time and spend most of your day there then bring your bike back to the rental place and head to Fujiyoshida, you can take a bus or taxi but I opted to walk there (it takes around 40 minutes), spend your second night there. If you can, wake up early again and ho enjoy the sunrise at Chureito pagoda, if you can't wake up, like me ahah, head there a bit later in the morning but expect to have to queue a bit, its'sthe only place where you're going to find some crowds but the views make it worth it! After checking out the pagoda and the park around it, it's time to explore the rest of the city, there's more to do and see that you'd expect! Take pics at the iconic Honcho street and then walk up along that road getting closer and closer to Mt Fuji, until you reach the incredibly dreamy Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, probably my fav shrive I visited during my three months in Japan! It's now time to leave Fuji-san, take one last look while heading to your next destination, could be back to Tokyo or somewhere else, I personally went to Kamakura after this short trip to Fuji. I visited Kamakura in the second half of October. The weather was warm, and some people even swam in the sea. I'd like to recommend a one-day itinerary for you. 🧐How to get there: The easiest way is to take the JR Yokosuka Line* from Tokyo Station to Kamakura Station, about 55 minutes without transfers. 🫶🏻What to see: Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is Kamakura's main temple and a good starting point for a stroll. Komachi-dori is a lively street with cafes, shops, and Japanese sweets. A great place for lunch. Great Buddha is a famous 13th-century bronze statue at Kotoku-in Temple. The Hase district can be reached on the atmospheric Enoden tram. Hasedera is a beautiful temple on a hillside with views of the city and the coast. For a first-timer, I'd build an itinerary not around hitting the maximum number of cities, but around three different sides of Japan: modern, historical, and peaceful. 1 • TOKYO — 3–4 DAYS You don't go to Tokyo for just one specific landmark. It's all about experiencing the contrasts: Asakusa → the old city vibes Shibuya → modern Tokyo Shinjuku → skyscrapers and nightlife Harajuku + Meiji Jingu → the city meeting the greenery Kagurazaka / Kiyosumi-Shirakawa → more laid-back neighborhoods Don't try to cram ten neighborhoods into two days. Tokyo is massive, and bouncing around too much will eat up your time fast. 2 • ONE DAY TRIP FROM TOKYO Pick just one. 🌊 Kamakura If you want temples, the Great Buddha, and the ocean. 🗻 Fuji Five Lakes area If seeing Mt. Fuji is one of your main expectations for the trip. The mountain's visibility is weather-dependent, so it's best not to treat this day as a guaranteed "Fuji photo op." There's no need to do both trips just to check off more boxes. 3 • KYOTO — 3 DAYS I definitely wouldn't skimp on days here. Day one: Kiyomizu-dera → Sannenzaka → Ninenzaka → Yasaka Pagoda → Gion Day two: Arashiyama or Northern Kyoto. Day three: Fushimi Inari early in the morning → a more peaceful Kyoto in the afternoon. Kyoto is especially terrible if you try to do "five temples before lunch." It's better to see less but leave time for wandering the streets, gardens, and back alleys. THE LOGIC OF THE FIRST HALF 🏙 Tokyo 3–4 days → 🌊 Kamakura or 🗻 Fuji → 🚅 Kyoto 3 days Right here, you've already got a metropolis, temples, old quarters, nature, and the Shinkansen. 4 • NARA OR UJI It's super easy to take a day trip from Kyoto. 🦌 Nara If you're looking for Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha, the deer park, and a large historical complex. 🍵 Uji If you want a slower-paced day: Byodo-in, matcha, the river, and smaller temples. For a short itinerary, just pick one. 5 • OSAKA — 1–2 DAYS I'd save Osaka for the grand finale. After the temple-heavy vibe of Kyoto, the contrast hits perfectly: Shinsekai → Namba → Dotonbori Food, neon signs, vibrant nightlife, and a completely different urban personality. And if you have an extra day, it's easy to take a trip from Osaka to Himeji for the castle and Koko-en Garden. 10-DAY ITINERARY Days 1–3 • Tokyo Day 4 • Kamakura / Fuji Days 5–7 • Kyoto Day 8 • Nara / Uji Days 9–10 • Osaka You end up with three home bases: Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka. And that's way more important than the total number of cities. WHAT I WOULD AVOID ADDING ❌ Hiroshima for just one evening just to check it off the list ❌ Takayama + Kanazawa if it means cutting Kyoto short ❌ Doing Kamakura, Nara, Uji, and Himeji all at once on a short trip ❌ Booking a new hotel almost every single night ❌ Giving Tokyo 2 days and Kyoto 1 day just so you can squeeze in four more cities IF YOU HAVE 14 DAYS That's when you can start expanding your route. For example: Tokyo → Kamakura/Fuji → Kyoto → Uji → Nara → Osaka → Himeji → Hiroshima/Miyajima or head in a different direction: Tokyo → Matsumoto → Takayama → Kanazawa → Kyoto → Osaka. But for a first trip of 10 days, I wouldn't try to prove to myself that I "completed" Japan. Tokyo + Kyoto + Osaka plus 1–2 well-chosen side trips around them already give you several totally different versions of the country. Most importantly, after an itinerary like this, you'll actually feel like you've been to Japan, rather than just efficiently transiting through it.

Seven cities in ten days sounds like an itinerary that leaves you needing a vacation to recover from your vacation. But it doesn't have to be that way. The main mistake here isn't the number of cities. It's when people try to string together seven far-flung destinations and end up spending every other day lugging a suitcase around. If you want to see different sides of Japan in one trip, it's best to build your route along a single transit axis and do day trips to some cities without changing hotels. Here is an option I would genuinely recommend for a first trip. DAYS 1–3 • TOKYO 3 nights / 3 days Don't try to see all of Tokyo. Divide the city into logical zones: Day 1: Asakusa → Ueno → Akihabara in the evening Day 2: Meiji Jingu → Harajuku → Shibuya Day 3: Shinjuku → a quieter neighborhood like Kagurazaka or Kiyosumi-Shirakawa This way, in three days, you'll at least get an initial feel for the different vibes of the city. DAY 4 • KAMAKURA 🚆 Tokyo → Kamakura → Tokyo Leave your suitcase at the hotel. Kamakura is perfect as a day trip: temples, green hills, the Great Buddha, and the coast are all relatively close to Tokyo. Basic route: Kita-Kamakura → temples → Hase → Great Buddha → Enoshima or the coast Head back to Tokyo in the evening. City #2 checked off, without changing hotels. DAY 5 • KYOTO Move in the morning: 🚅 Tokyo → Kyoto After checking in, don't try to knock out half the temples right away. It's better to take a relaxed first route: Gion → Yasaka Shrine → Higashiyama → evening stroll If you arrive early enough, you can explore part of Higashiyama in the afternoon. But I would still save Kiyomizu-dera for a separate early morning. WHERE WE SLEEP 🛏 Tokyo: 4 nights 🛏 Kyoto: starting the second block So in the first five days, we've already covered: TOKYO → KAMAKURA → KYOTO without the daily hassle of dragging suitcases around. DAY 6 • KYOTO Dedicate a full day just to Kyoto. For example: 07:30 Kiyomizu-dera → Sannenzaka → Ninenzaka → Yasaka Pagoda → Kodai-ji → Gion Or choose Arashiyama if that's a higher priority for you. Don't try to pack both sides of the city into a single day. DAY 7 • UJI + NARA Here you can combine two small cities along the same train line. Morning: 🍵 Kyoto → Uji Byodo-in → tea street → Uji River. Afternoon: 🚆 Uji → Nara Nara Park → Todai-ji → Kasuga Taisha. In the evening, you can either stay overnight in Nara or head back to Kyoto. To minimize moving around, I'd choose Kyoto as a single base. That takes care of cities #4 and #5. DAY 8 • OSAKA 🚆 Kyoto → Osaka Head over in the morning and drop your bags at the hotel. During the day, you could check out Osaka Castle and the central districts, and in the evening, dive into the Osaka that everyone really comes for: Shinsekai → Namba → Dotonbori. 🛏 Overnight in Osaka. DAY 9 • HIMEJI 🚅 Osaka → Himeji → Osaka City #7. The main goal is Himeji Castle, one of the most beautifully preserved original castle complexes in Japan. After the castle, add in Koko-en Garden. And then... just go back. There's no need to squeeze in three more cities just because the day isn't over yet. DAY 10 • OSAKA Keep the final day free of major travel. You could hit up Kuromon Market, Nakanoshima, Umeda, do some shopping, or just relax for a few hours before your flight. If your return flight is out of Tokyo, you'll need to adjust the itinerary to allow for the trip back to the capital. THE FINAL 7 CITIES 1. Tokyo — the megalopolis 2. Kamakura — temples + sea 3. Kyoto — the historic capital 4. Uji — tea + river 5. Nara — ancient temples + park 6. Osaka — food + nightlife 7. Himeji — the castle OVERNIGHT STAYS Tokyo — 4 Kyoto — 3 Osaka — 2 And this is the key point. 7 cities ≠ 7 hotels. Over ten days, there are only three bases here. Kamakura is a day trip from Tokyo; Uji and Nara from Kyoto; Himeji from Osaka. This is exactly how an itinerary stays action-packed without turning into ten days of: check-out → train station → train → luggage lockers → sightseeing → check-in → repeat. For an itinerary like this, I'd even make a separate saveable cheat sheet: "7 cities / 3 hotels / all transit." It's much more useful here than just another list of attractions.
