8 cool spots for reverse travel in July, no crowds, no high prices
While others crowd West Lake to see the masses, you’re cooling off under the covered bridges of a Jiangnan ancient town. While others queue on popular mountain trails, you’re wading in the streams of the Qinba Mountains. For July reverse travel, I’ve set my sights on these places—reachable within 2 hours by high-speed train or by overnight train, with affordable scenery and prices, and best of all, no one competing for your seat. 🍃 Limited coolness, 🍜 limited local charm, all found in small towns with few people.
1️⃣ Handan | Hebei
The city walls have no tiles, and the stone slabs are polished smooth. Enter Guangfu ancient city at 9 AM. At the east gate, you can still see residents pushing tricycles to the morning market, with hot fried dough sticks piled in bamboo baskets. Walking around the city walls takes about 40 minutes. People row boats in the moat, and willow trees along the bank provide shade.
⏰ Best to finish before noon. After 10 AM, tour groups start arriving, and the stretch from east to south gate gets crowded. For lunch, pick any “crispy fish restaurant.” The carp is stewed until the bones are tender, paired with a bowl of mung bean soup to cool you down.
In the afternoon, head to Wahuang Palace in She County.
⚠️ Save the physical exertion for the start when it’s hot: park at the foot of the mountain, climb the “Eighteen Steps” first, and at the halfway point, you’ll see pavilions hanging on the cliff. After descending, take the cable car for 10 yuan to avoid retracing your steps. If you’re interested in stone carvings, the Northern Qi cliff inscriptions inside the palace are a treasure. Don’t just take photos and miss them.
🚄 Taxi from Handan East Station to Guangfu ancient city takes about 40 minutes.
2️⃣ Qujing | Yunnan
Some ask: which to visit first, Luoping or Jiulong Waterfalls? My answer: it depends on the weather. If it’s cloudy, head straight to the Jiulong Waterfall group. Before 10 AM, the mist hasn’t cleared, and you can hear the waterfalls from a kilometer away. Walking along the Lovers’ Waterfall plank road, the mist hits your face, chilling you to the bone.
⏰ Plan about 2 hours. In the afternoon, sunlight hits the pools directly, causing overexposure in photos.
If it’s sunny, switch to the Luoping rapeseed flower sea.
📍 Don’t just stand at the Jinjifeng cluster viewing platform. Walk 800 meters north to a rapeseed field without fences. Locals park by the roadside and picnic on mats.
🍜 Have lunch in Banqiao Town with a bowl of “steamed rice noodles.” The soft glutinous rice pairs perfectly with savory meat sauce, all for just 8 yuan.
⚠️ The flower sea starts harvesting at the end of July. Peak bloom is from late June to mid-July, so don’t miss it.
3️⃣ Ankang | Shaanxi
To avoid crowds, head straight into the mountains. Drive an hour in the morning to Qiancheng River. Once inside the scenic area, skip the sightseeing bus and hike the plank road. Along the way, there are five or six clear pools where you can see patterns on the stones. The deepest pool lets you take off your shoes and step in. The bottom is fine sand, so it won’t hurt your feet.
⏰ The best light is before 2 PM. Sunlight filters through leaves onto the water, perfect for close-up shots without filters.
⚠️ Fengyan ancient terraced fields are in Hanyin County, in a different direction from Qiancheng River. It’s best to pick one for an in-depth visit. If you choose the terraced fields, the best viewpoint is the “Cloud Viewing Pavilion” in Yanping Village. Arrive around 5 PM to see the sunset turn the terraces golden.
🚄 Taxi from Ankang Station to Qiancheng River takes about 1.5 hours. Renting a car for the day costs around 300 yuan.
4️⃣ Jiaxing | Zhejiang
Worried about Jiangnan water towns being too commercial on your first visit? Try the “Xitang overnight + Wuzhen daytime” combo.
📍 Arrive in Xitang Friday evening, buy a 50 yuan night tour ticket, and stay at a riverside guesthouse. Open your window to see rowboats passing under stone bridges. After 9 PM, tour groups leave, and the entire misty corridor is just you and the neighbor’s cat.
🍜 Breakfast at “Old Lady Guan’s stinky tofu.” The crispy exterior steams hot when bitten, and the spicy sauce is a lifesaver on hot days.
On Sunday, head to Wuzhen, only visiting the West Scenic Zone.
⚠️ The East Scenic Zone is too crowded and less enjoyable. Enter West Scenic Zone through the “Zhaoming Academy” entrance, walk along the river to the “White Lotus Pagoda,” with covered walkways providing shade.
⏰ Before 10 AM, the area is empty enough for photos with clean backgrounds. After 10 AM, tour groups arrive, so head straight to the “Mao Dun Memorial Hall” for a quieter experience. 📌 If traveling with family, staying at a guesthouse outside Wuzhen is more cost-effective. Accommodation inside West Scenic Zone is marked up three times.
5️⃣ Zhaoqing | Guangdong
Don’t treat Xinghu Lake like an ordinary park.
📍 Rent a bike at “Paifang Square” and ride counterclockwise around the lake. First stop is “Shuiyue Palace,” which you can enter without a ticket. Sit on the stone steps at the entrance and let the lake breeze wash away the stickiness. Next, head to the east gate of “Qixingyan.” Find a spot by the water under an ancient banyan tree. The tree’s reflection on the emerald water makes a natural cool spot.
🍜 At noon, bike to “Yanqian Village” for rice noodle rolls so thin you can see the shrimp inside. Drizzled with peanut oil, it’s ten times tastier than city chain stores.
⚠️ The hottest time is 3–5 PM in July. Use this time to cool off at Duanzhou Museum, which has free air conditioning. Afterward, catch the sunset as the lake turns rose-colored—a perfect end to the day.
🚄 Taxi from Zhaoqing East Station to Xinghu Lake takes about 30 minutes. Avoid weekends; the lakeside is quiet on weekday afternoons.
6️⃣ Lanzhou | Gansu
Lanzhou is more than just beef noodles.
📍 Start at Zhongshan Bridge, then walk to Baita Mountain Park on the south side of the bridge. The climb is short—15 minutes to the top. Find a stone bench in front of Baita Temple. The Yellow River bends right below.
⏰ Arrive around 6:30 PM. When the iron bridge lights up, the entire Yellow River glows warm gold, never tiring to watch. The next morning, head straight to the provincial museum.
⚠️ Closed on Mondays, so don’t go for nothing. 📌 Free tickets with ID, but the “Bronze Galloping Horse” exhibit is deep inside, so don’t waste time at the entrance. After the museum, turn right and walk 300 meters to “Mazi Lu Beef Noodles.” Two fine noodle servings with 60 grams of meat, the broth is rich enough to coat your mouth.
📍 In the afternoon, visit “Zhengning Road Night Market,” which opens at 6 PM. Order a “Fangha sweet fermented milk tea” for a refreshing cool-down.
⚠️ Don’t take a taxi to city attractions; the subway is faster. Zhongshan Bridge and Baita Mountain stations are both on the line.
7️⃣ Guangyuan | Sichuan
Jianmen Pass is cooler than you think in summer.
📍 Enter from the south gate and take the “Bird Path” up the mountain. The cliffside plank road is shaded by mountains on both sides, so you hardly feel the sun. After half an hour, rest at “Liangshan Temple” and ask for a free mountain spring water bowl. It’s so sweet you’ll want to fill your water bottle.
⏰ The best time is 9–11 AM. During the rainy season, the stone steps get misty, making it feel like walking on clouds.
🍜 After descending, go to “Jianmen Town” for a tofu feast. Try the “Pregnant Tofu”—tofu stuffed with meat and drizzled with chili oil, tender and firm.
⚠️ The cable car often has lines. It’s best to take it one way up and hike down to save energy and not miss the views.
🚄 High-speed train from Guangyuan Station to Jianmen Pass Station takes only 19 minutes. A shuttle bus is available from the station to the scenic entrance.
8️⃣ Tonghua | Jilin
Photography and history lovers will find a home here. In the morning, visit Ji’an’s Goguryeo relics. The General’s Tomb and King Gwanggaeto Stele are in the same area, connected by a 10-minute walk.
📍 Enter from the “Yushan noble cemetery” entrance. Start with the mural tombs. The four gods paintings in the tomb passage are still vivid. Bring a flashlight, as it’s too dark inside to see details.
⏰ Before 10 AM, it’s less crowded. After noon, the temperature difference inside and outside the tombs makes it uncomfortable. In the afternoon, head to Ji’an’s rapeseed flower sea—📍 on Jiangxin Island across the Yalu River, blooming in July. A wooden boardwalk leads to the end, where you can see North Korean houses on the opposite bank. With luck, you might see people washing clothes by the river.
🍜 Have lunch in Ji’an city with sour soup noodles. The sourness whets your appetite, and the noodles slide smoothly into your mouth.
⚠️ Real-name registration is required at the Goguryeo scenic area entrance. Bring your ID.
🚄 Bus from Tonghua Station to Ji’an takes 2 hours. Renting a car is recommended to cover both spots in one day.
