Jiangle travel guide and discussion

As autumn arrives and temperatures cool, the popularity of short-distance leisure trips continues to rise. With its constant-temperature cave environment and the autumn scenery and leisure activities at the Guixin Garden near the exit, the Yuhua Cave Scenic Area in Jiangle, Sanming, offers a one-stop "cave exploration + outdoor leisure" travel experience, making it a popular choice for short autumn getaways in the region. Yuhua Cave is one of China's four most famous caves. Formed 270 million years ago, it is a typical karst landform with a constant year-round temperature of about 15°C inside. Compared to its summer appeal as a cool retreat, the cave offers a warm and comfortable experience in autumn, which complements the crisp, refreshing mountain scenery outside, providing a more diverse travel experience. Visitor numbers are relatively stable during the autumn and winter seasons, allowing for a relaxed pace of travel, making it suitable for family trips, leisure sightseeing, educational field trips, and company union outings. Located at the cave exit, Guixin Garden is one of the core areas that extends the visitor experience. The park leverages the cave and mountain forest ecological resources to significantly enhance the richness and comfort of the visit. Regarding transportation, the scenic area is adjacent to the Jiangle Station on the Changfu High-Speed Railway. Visitors from Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou, Longyan, and other places within the province can reach it directly by bullet train. After exiting the station, you can reach the Yuhua Cave Cultural and Tourism Town Visitor Center within 3 minutes by bus or Didi, or by taking Jiangle's micro-bus or shared bikes. It is also only a 4-minute drive from the Jiangle expressway toll station to the visitor center. It is expected that in mid-to-late November, the Metasequoia Avenue in Longqishan will enter its most beautiful viewing period of the year! At that time, the entire avenue will shed its green, putting on a fiery outfit. Fiery red, orange-red, and caramel colors will interweave, as if the autumn palette has been overturned, making it as beautiful as a rich, colorful oil painting and an excellent spot for photos! The scenic area reminds visitors that there is a temperature difference between morning and evening in autumn, so it is recommended to bring a light jacket to add or remove layers as needed.

Anyone else get this? I always thought Fujian tourism was just Xiamen, Quanzhou, and Fuzhou, but a friend recommended Sanming, and I'm absolutely obsessed! 😭 Now that I'm back at work, my head is still in the clouds, filled with the blue waters of Dajin Lake and the cobblestone streets of Taining Ancient Town... First, a few "heads-up" points: 👉 Sanming is really niche. I spent forever searching for guides beforehand, but honestly, there were fewer guides online than tourists. I had to rely on locals for directions. 👉 The attractions are quite far apart. If you aren't driving, you need to plan public transport in advance, or you won't be able to hit many spots in one day. 👉 The food is too good! Shaxian snacks actually originated in Sanming. Wonton soup (bianrou), peanut butter noodles, shumai, taro dumplings... I could eat them every day and never get tired of them. I definitely gained 3 pounds in 3 days. But honestly, I don't care about these "downsides" at all! 📍 Must-visit list: ✅ Taining Dajin Lake: The water here is the closest thing to Jiuzhaigou in Fujian! The lake water is so blue it looks filtered. Taking a boat tour to see the Danxia landforms on the water—every photo is wallpaper-worthy. It's so beautiful I didn't want to blink. ✅ Taining Ancient Town: An uncommercialized ancient town where locals still live a slow-paced life. Old alleys, historic residences, and the Zhuangyuan Mansion—it's super charming to just wander around. Plus, it's free! ✅ Jiangle Yuhua Cave: A massive karst cave filled with stalactites. The lighting makes it look super dreamy. It's a bit chilly inside, so I recommend bringing a light jacket. ✅ Yongan Taoyuan Cave: Danxia landforms + canyons + waterfalls. It's a bit tiring to climb, but worth it! The "Yixiantian" (A Glimpse of Sky) section is super thrilling, like crawling into a crack in the earth. ✅ Ge's Kao (Jiulong Valley): A thousand-year-old red chinquapin forest. Take a deep breath in the lush green mountains. The waterfalls are super refreshing—it's like a natural air-conditioned room in the summer 🌿 🗓️ 3-day itinerary reference: Day 1: Arrive in Sanming > Wander around Taining Ancient Town > Boat tour of Dajin Lake (see the water Danxia + Ganlu Temple) > Stay in Taining County at night and eat Shaxian snacks Day 2: Yuhua Cave > Jiulong Valley (Ge's Kao + waterfalls) > Return to Taining Ancient Town at night to see the night view and visit the night market Day 3: Taoyuan Cave/Linyin Stone Forest (choose one) > Buy local specialties > Return trip 💡 Practical tips: 1️⃣ The best seasons are spring and autumn. Spring is lush and green, autumn is full of colorful foliage, and summer is also cool and great for escaping the heat. 2️⃣ I highly recommend driving! Sanming's attractions are scattered, so having a car will make the trip much easier, and the highways are very convenient. 3️⃣ Authentic way to eat Shaxian snacks: Add minced garlic and vinegar to the wonton soup (bianrou), add peanut butter to the noodles, and eat the shumai while hot! Any old shop in the county is better than the ones in the scenic areas. 4️⃣ It's slippery inside the caves, so I recommend wearing sneakers instead of high heels, and bring a light jacket as the temperature inside is low. Seriously, Sanming is the kind of place you'll want to visit a second time! No over-development, no crowded tourist spots, just great mountains, water, and food. Do Fujianese people have "low-key" engraved in their DNA? How is such a great place so underrated? 😤

The Youxi Lianhe Terraced Fields in autumn are like fingerprints drawn by the earth itself. Layers of fields wind along the mountains. As the autumn breeze sweeps by, thousands of acres of rice waves surge into an endless sea of gold. Morning mist drifts up the mountainside, and the rising sun pierces through the clouds, spilling golden light across the rice paddies. No filter needed—every shot is wallpaper-worthy. Standing on the viewing platform gazing at this harvest scene, all the exhaustion from work and travel is gently blown away by the mountain breeze. Address: Liujiaoji Viewing Platform, Dongbian Village, Youxi County, Sanming City, Fujian Opening hours: Open all day, year-round Accommodation: Nanping Jinjishan Hotel. It is very close to the terraced fields, making it convenient for early risers to photograph the morning mist and sunrise. Mountain view rooms are available, and it is car-friendly, so you do not have to drive back and forth to the county seat. Perfect for photography enthusiasts! Dining: Tiantige Restaurant. A local farm-style restaurant with generous portions. Free-range chicken, duck, and local stir-fries offer authentic mountain flavors. It is a great place to eat after visiting the terraced fields. No need to travel all the way to Wuyuan; Sanming hides an authentic "Shaiqiu" (autumn harvest drying) spectacle. Guifeng Ancient Village features ancient dwellings standing for over 760 years. Every autumn, families place drying trays on their roofs, covering the dark eaves with fiery red chili peppers, golden corn, and plump rice grains. The blend of old earthen walls and colorful autumn harvests creates a poetic atmosphere full of life. Address: Guifeng Village, northeastern part of Yangzhong Town, Youxi County, Sanming City Opening hours: Open all day, year-round Ticket: CNY 18.8 Accommodation: Guifeng Zui Mei Shiye (Caiyuanli Homestay). Staying inside the ancient village is the best choice. It is a renovated old house with a terrace where you can directly view the "Shaiqiu" scenery. You do not need to enter and exit the scenic area, and you can enjoy the quiet night in the ancient village—perfect for photos! Tip: Many homestays in the village offer farm-style meals, so you can order food directly at the homestay if you do not want to go out. If you want to soak up negative oxygen ions, head to the Longqishan National Nature Reserve. Towering ancient trees have quietly put on their autumn attire, with leaves painted in rich layers of yellow, orange, and red. Sunlight filters through the canopy, scattering golden fragments across the forest floor. Stroll along the mountain trails, listen to the birds chirping, and breathe in the fresh scent of plants—a truly immersive autumn forest experience. Address: Longqishan Nature Reserve, Jiangle County Opening hours: 08:00–17:30, year-round Accommodation: Jiangle Longqishanju Hotel. Located right near the nature reserve, surrounded by mountains and forests, the environment is quiet and secluded. It saves you the drive to and from the county seat after hiking. Dining: Longqishan Leicha House. A must-try for authentic Leicha (pounded tea), paired with river fish, dried bamboo shoots, and local stir-fried noodles. Sitting down for a bowl of Leicha after a hike is full of mountain flavor! Taining Dajin Lake in autumn sheds the summer heat. Take a boat ride on the emerald waters, where the Danxia peaks on both sides are dyed in layers of red, yellow, and green, unfolding like a flowing landscape painting. A breeze brushes across the lake, creating ripples. As you drift along, watching the mountains and water, time seems to slow down. Address: Qiyuan Village, Meikou Township, Taining County, Sanming City, Fujian Opening hours: Open all day, year-round Accommodation: Fulvhui Taining Minjiang Hotel. A quality choice near Dajin Lake, with lake-view room types, complete facilities, and convenient parking. Suitable for family trips. Relax at the hotel after touring the lake. Dining: Dajin Lake Fish Restaurant. A highly-rated farm-style restaurant by Dajin Lake, specializing in organic fish prepared in two ways. The fish head tofu soup is delicious, portions are generous, and parking is free. The top choice for lake food after a boat tour! Surprisingly, most of Sanming's A-rated scenic spots are free to enter. Lesser-known ancient villages and fortresses like Youxi Shujing Earth Fort and Mingxi Yulian Ancient Village have few visitors in autumn. With their mottled ancient walls and quiet alleys, they are perfect for a leisurely stroll to quietly savor the passage of time. After exploring the mountains, villages, and waters, do not miss the authentic local delicacies. A bowl of chewy Datiao noodles, a portion of rich meat floss, and various local snacks are affordable and authentic. Eat from morning till night and taste the true flavors of Sanming. Travel tips: 1. Best time: Late September–early November. The terraced rice fields turn yellow, Guifeng "Shaiqiu" is in full swing, and the mountain forests are colorful. 2. Route: Youxi Lianhe Terraced Fields > Guifeng Ancient Village > Longqishan > Taining Dajin Lake. A 3–4 day self-driving loop can be planned. 3. Tickets: Most ancient villages like Shujing Earth Fort and Yulian Ancient Village are free; some scenic spots require advance booking. 4. Preparation: There is a large temperature difference between day and night in the mountains, so bring a light jacket. The trails in the terraced fields and ancient villages can be slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. 5. Accommodation: Autumn is peak season for the terraced fields and Guifeng "Shaiqiu," so it is recommended to book homestays 3–7 days in advance. Due to the large temperature difference between day and night in the mountains, try to choose rooms with air conditioning.

How to avoid pitfalls 🚫 Sanming has lots of mountains and water and the sights are spread out. If you don't plan well you'll suffer. For Dajin Lake, avoid taking the boat at noon — the sun will roast you into questioning your life. Checking Trip.com for departure times in advance is the safest move. Boat-inclusive tickets at Dajin Lake start at CNY 108 for adults; some student and senior sessions are CNY 115. Buying tickets on the spot blindly often costs more and involves long lines. Zhaixia Grand Canyon is CNY 55 for adults — don't wear flimsy shoes; the Danxia trail gets slippery when wet, and one fall will crush your dignity. Taining old town itself is free. Avoid the street-side specialty gift packs; their prices can be shockingly inflated. If you want souvenirs, go to a county supermarket and don't be careless. Shangqingxi bamboo raft plus sightseeing shuttle is CNY 125 for adults, CNY 93 for children 1.2–1.4m and some seniors. Don't raft in thunderstorms; rescheduling is better than suffering through it. Xia Tianxia has many attractions like the glass bridge and via ferrata — check exactly what a combo ticket includes before buying. Buying individual, scattered attractions separately is often a dumb move; Trip.com combo tickets with five items start at CNY 99 for adults and are more convenient What to wear 👕 In September, daytime temperatures in Sanming can reach around 35°C, with lows around 24°C, and the humidity can feel like being stuffed in a steamer. Wear a quick-dry short-sleeve plus a thin sun-protective long-sleeve, and choose loose athletic pants — you'll be comfortable entering Yuhua Cave or walking the Taoyuan Cave skylight. Yuhua Cave tickets that include the shuttle and commentary start at CNY 118 for adults; the cave is cool, so seniors and children should bring a light jacket, or a single sneeze after exiting could ruin everything. Shoes must be slip-resistant — Taoyuan Cave is CNY 54 for adults and CNY 30 for seniors and children; the skylight is so narrow you have to turn sideways, and a slipped sole is mortifying. Carry a folding umbrella; there are occasional showers in September, and getting soaked without an umbrella is on you. Bring sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen at beach standard — the lake's reflection won't protect you, and you'll come back 3 shades darker and panic when you look in the mirror Transportation tips 🚄 If you're coming from out of town, arriving at Sanming North is the easiest option. Transfer to the Taining high-speed train; second-class seats usually cost CNY 29–34 year-round, with some intercity services at CNY 26. It's just over half an hour to Taining, which is easier than driving and hunting for parking. From downtown Sanming to Sanming North you can take buses K102, K108, K103, etc., which also go to Shaxian and the north station. Don't trust the flat-rate car offers outside the station — if you don't negotiate in advance you'll get ripped off. From Taining station, it's most reliable to take separate taxis to Dajin Lake, Zhaixia, and Shangqingxi. If you want to do Jiangle Yuhua Cave, Yong'an Taoyuan Cave, and Youxi Guifeng in one go, driving yourself is more flexible. Yuhua Cave is in Meihua Village, Jiangle; Taoyuan Cave is on National Highway 205 in Yong'an; Guifeng is in Yangzhong, Youxi — run them in a straight line so you don't detour. Check Trip.com's refund and change policies when booking; if you need to change plans last minute don't tough it out — waiting around for a rebooking is the worst Local food 🍜 In Shaxian, don't just eat mixed noodles and flat dumplings — trying shaomai, stewed pots, and cured duck together is the proper introduction. Buying a whole cured duck is cheaper than buying sliced pieces at scenic spots. Near Taining old town, try youjiang tofu, warm mushroom buns, and biyu rolls; tofu dishes are inexpensive per person and pair especially well with Dajin Lake fish head. After exiting Jiangle Yuhua Cave, drink lei tea to cut the greasiness and fill you up. Around Yong'an Taoyuan Cave, try guotiao and huorou; ask for less yellow pepper — adding a lot your first time will be soul-crushingly spicy. Guifeng village in Youxi charges CNY 18.8 for adult admission; after touring, eat farmhouse dishes but check prices before ordering — don't order blindly just because a dish is marked signature, some trendy farmhouse restaurants have prices that will make you cry. Avoid ordering expensive banquet sets in core scenic-area restaurants; go to the county old street and try small shops — your wallet and your stomach will be happier Must-visit attractions 🏞️ Dajin Lake is the main attraction — water Danxia, Ganluyan Temple, and the water skylight can all be seen in one trip. Don't pick the sunniest boat time; adult tickets start at CNY 108. Zhaixia Grand Canyon is CNY 55 — walking the three Danxia valleys isn't tiring and is very photogenic. Buying a combined ticket with Dajin Lake is more cost-effective: Dajin Lake + Zhaixia adult CNY 203, or CNY 308 with the raft combo. If you're short on time, don't cram everything into one day or your legs will suffer. The stalactites in Jiangle Yuhua Cave look like they've had a filter applied; adult tickets start at CNY 118 and include the shuttle and guide, and it's a good choice for cooling off or rainy days. Yong'an Taoyuan Cave is CNY 54 to see the skylight — it's so narrow you'll be afraid of getting stuck even if you lose weight. Youxi Xia Tianxia starts at CNY 99 for glass and via ferrata activities and makes for flashy photos. Guifeng ancient village is CNY 18.8 to walk among Ming and Qing houses — take your time and don't rush. Taining old town is free to stroll, especially around Shangshudi, and enjoying the lake breeze at night costs nothing and feels more authentic than paying for a crowd. Check opening times and boat departures on Trip.com in advance; don't rush in blindly on the day — if your plan gets messed up the whole trip will fall apart.

Every National Day, my social media feed is filled with crowds! If you don't want to wait in line for 2 hours at popular attractions just to take photos for 5 minutes, these 4 niche cities are perfect for you! They aren't crowded, but the scenery is stunning. You won't need to fight for a photo spot, and you can enjoy a slow-paced holiday. "Reverse travel" is truly amazing. 🌾 Xingyi, Guizhou 💡 Why it's niche: Most people heading to Guizhou go straight to Huangguoshu Waterfall or Xiaoqikong, so Xingyi is often overlooked! The need for connecting transportation naturally filters out large tour groups, so it won't be packed during National Day. October is just in time for the autumn harvest in Wanfenglin, creating a perfect pastoral karst atmosphere! ✅ Must-see attractions Wanfenglin, where over 20,000 cone-shaped peaks stretch out, with rice paddies and villages nestled in between. Rent a small bike to ride through the country lanes; every shot looks like a pastoral painting. Maling River Canyon, where hundreds of waterfalls cascade down the cliffs. Walking on the boardwalk, you'll feel the refreshing mist on your face—it's very healing. Also, Wanfeng Lake, with its vast, quiet surface, is perfect for a walk around the lake to see the reflection of the distant mountains. 🚗 Transport: Take the high-speed train to Panzhou Station, then transfer to a car to reach Xingyi. Within the city, you can take a taxi or rent a small electric scooter to explore the Wanfenglin area. 🏯 Quzhou, Zhejiang 💡 Why it's niche: Most tourism in Zhejiang is dominated by Hangzhou and Wuzhen. Many people don't know about this small city hidden in western Zhejiang. The spicy food also deters some tourists, so you won't have to wait in long lines at Jianglang Mountain or the ancient towns during National Day. ✅ Must-see attractions Jianglang Mountain, where 3 giant Danxia boulders rise from the ground. Hike to the top to overlook the mountains for a breathtaking view. Nianbadu Ancient Town, hidden deep in the mountains, has well-preserved ancient residences and dozens of dialects spoken within the town, making its culture truly unique. Shuitingmen Historical District, where lanterns light up at night. It's mostly locals here, offering a rich, authentic atmosphere. 🚗 Transport: Take a high-speed train directly to Quzhou Station or Jiangshan Station. There are tourist shuttle lines to surrounding attractions, making travel very convenient. 🍂 Yongzhou, Hunan 💡 Why it's niche: When people think of Hunan tourism, the first things that come to mind are Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang Ancient Town. Yongzhou's Xiaoxiang ancient realm is rarely on the list. There are no overly commercialized "influencer" shops here, preserving the original look of the old city. There are very few tourists during National Day. ✅ Must-see attractions Lingling Ancient City, where the Xiao River flows around the city and winding bluestone alleys stretch out. There's no noisy hawking, making it super comfortable to walk along the river in the evening. Liuzi Street, with its towering ancient trees and quiet historical sites, is perfect for a slow stroll to experience the poetic atmosphere of Xiaoxiang described in ancient literature. Dongshan Scenic Area, where you can climb high to overlook the entire ancient city and the river—the atmosphere at sunset is incredible. 🚗 Transport: Take a high-speed train directly to Lingling Station. The old city attractions are concentrated, so you can explore everything on foot or by shared bike. 🪨 Sanming, Fujian 💡 Why it's niche: Tourism in Fujian is concentrated in Xiamen and Wuyi Mountain. Sanming is hidden in the mountains of central Fujian, a landscape secret rarely noticed by tourists. The foot traffic during National Day is far lower than at popular destinations. ✅ Must-see attractions Taining Dajin Lake, a water-based Danxia landform. Take a boat across the lake to see the unique rock formations on both sides. Ganlu Temple, embedded in the cliff face, is a masterpiece of ancient architecture and perfect for photos. Shangshudi, a complex of Ming Dynasty ancient residences with high walls and large courtyards, allows you to savor the charm of Fujian's ancient architecture. Yuhua Cave, a karst cave with diverse stalactites, is cool and comfortable. 🚗 Transport: Take a high-speed train directly to Sanming North Station, then transfer to a car to Taining. You can carpool between attractions. 📌 Travel tips 1. Be sure to book your travel tickets in advance for the National Day holiday. There aren't many connecting trains to niche cities, so don't wait until the last minute. 2. There is a large temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains, so carry a light jacket. Ancient towns and caves have many mosquitoes, so remember to bring mosquito repellent. 3. Confirm opening hours for museums and ancient temples before you go. Some attractions require online booking to avoid arriving to find them closed. 4. The best local food in niche cities is usually hidden in the old town areas. Avoid shops right at the entrance of scenic spots for more authentic flavors. 5. "Reverse travel" is all about relaxation. You don't need to rush to check off every spot; leaving time to just daydream and stroll is the true meaning of a holiday. If you don't want to waste your energy in the National Day crowds, try "reverse travel"! The pastoral scenery of Wanfenglin, the Danxia landforms of Jianglang Mountain, the Xiaoxiang river waters of Yongzhou, and the water-based Danxia of Sanming—each place hides uncrowded beauty. Go to the Snack Culture City (Ligang Road) to find the time-honored brands! 💣 Tips to avoid pitfalls (hard-learned lessons) 🚗 Transport: Don't mix up Sanming Station and Sanming North Station! Attractions are 1–2 hours apart; don't expect to finish everything in 3 days without a car. 🎫 Attractions: Don't be late for the first Dajin Lake boat at 8:00 AM; Yuhua Cave is slippery inside, so wear non-slip shoes; if you're on the larger side, you might get stuck in the "A Thread of Sky" at Taoyuan Cave. 🍽️ Food: Ask for the "market price" before ordering Taining organic fish; local specialties at scenic spots are twice as expensive, so buy them at a supermarket. 🏨 Accommodation: Taining homestays may raise prices during peak season, so book online in advance. 🌡️ Weather: The cave is a constant 16–18°C, so remember to bring a light jacket; the sun is strong in summer, so use sunscreen. ✨ 4 hidden gems recommended 1️⃣ Dajin Lake: China's only Danxia landform on water, great for photos with red cliffs and green water. 2️⃣ Yong'an Taoyuan Cave: Challenge the 127-meter "A Thread of Sky," with the narrowest point only 40 cm. 3️⃣ Jiangle Yuhua Cave: The largest karst cave in Fujian, visited twice by Xu Xiake. 4️⃣ Taining Ancient Town: Red brick houses and stone-paved roads, preserving the Ming and Qing dynasty style—very healing for a slow stroll. 💰 Estimated cost per person · 2 days, 1 night: Approx. I. Core must-visit attractions (Don't waste your trip! Local secrets) 1. Taining Dajin Lake (Top 1 must-visit) Sanming's iconic 5A scenic area, a World Natural Heritage site, is known as the "No. 1 Lake and Mountain in the World" and represents the pinnacle of Danxia landform scenery. The core experience is a boat tour. Check in at the iconic Ganlu Temple; the entire temple is supported by a single pillar, built without nails or rivets—a thousand-year architectural marvel that's perfect for photos. Along the way, you'll see red cliffs, Danxia landforms, and the "Skyline on the Water." The reflection of mountains and water creates a martial arts-style secret realm, full of atmosphere. 2. Zhaixia Grand Canyon Known as the "Danxia Landform Museum," the canyon is serene with babbling streams and gentle, easy-to-walk trails. The entire hike is relaxing and comfortable, with high vegetation coverage and fresh air—perfect for a stroll, getting some fresh air, and immersing yourself in nature. It's a niche, healing spot away from the crowds. 3. Shaxian Ancient Town + Qifeng Diecui You must visit Shaxian when in Sanming! It's not just about snacks; there's also the quaint old street, full of local life. You can overlook the entire city's night view from the Qifeng Diecui boardwalk. It's very pleasant to take a walk and enjoy the breeze in the evening. It's free to visit, so you can enjoy a stunning night view without spending a dime. 4. Yongan Taoyuan Cave Famous nationwide for its "Skyline," the narrow Danxia rock crevices are unique, thrilling, and distinctive. The hike is moderately difficult. Once you reach the top, the view is expansive, offering panoramic views of the mountains and water. If you like light hiking, you must come here. 5. Guifeng Ancient Village A thousand-year-old village hidden in the mountains, with blue bricks, black tiles, and ancient stone alleys. It's not very commercialized and retains the original Hakka village style. It's quiet and uncrowded, perfect for taking photos and experiencing the slow life of an ancient village. II. 3-day, 2-night classic itinerary for lazy travelers (Beginners, just copy this) Day 1: Arrive in Sanming > Shaxian Ancient Town > Qifeng Diecui night view After arriving during the day, head straight to the old town of Shaxian to stroll through the old streets and eat authentic snacks to unlock the local taste of Shaxian. In the evening, hike the Qifeng Diecui boardwalk to watch the sunset and evening glow, then enjoy the night view—the evening breeze is very comfortable. Day 2: Taining Dajin Lake > Ganlu Temple > Taining Ancient Town Spend the whole day immersing yourself in Dajin Lake, taking a boat to see the Danxia mountains and water, and checking in at the thousand-year-old temple. In the evening, stroll slowly through Taining Ancient Town to experience the night atmosphere of the ancient streets and avoid the daytime crowds. Day 3: Zhaixia Grand Canyon > Guifeng Ancient Village > Departure Hike the serene Grand Canyon in the morning to get some fresh air. In the afternoon, stroll through the original ancient village to take photos and relax. It's a relaxing, unhurried itinerary for a perfect end to your trip. III. Must-try authentic food (Affordable and reliable) Sanming has tons of food, focusing on affordable prices, large portions, and authentic local flavors. No need to look for "internet-famous" shops; just head to any old shop in the old streets and alleys! 1. Shaxian signatures: Miaomen Bianrou (wonton), mixed noodles, crystal dumplings, taro dumplings, and "gold wrapped in silver." The skins are thin, the fillings are generous, and the peanut sauce is rich. It's a standard local breakfast, and you can eat until you're full for about 20 yuan per person. 2. Yongan specialties: Yongan Guotiao (rice noodles) and Huorou (fresh pork). Smooth rice noodles paired with tender pork cheek meat, dipped in secret yellow chili sauce—the taste is incredible and never gets old. 3. Taining snacks: Biyu rolls, Youjiang tofu, and Dajin Lake fish head soup. The mugwort skin is crispy on the outside and glutinous on the inside; the fish head soup is fresh, sweet, and rich; the tofu is delicate and smooth. 4. Hakka flavors: Ninghua Leicha (pounded tea), Datian Jiucengguo (nine-layer cake), and Luolan sesame cakes. The Leicha is savory and has a sweet aftertaste; the sesame cakes are crispy and flaky. All are authentic, traditional flavors. IV. Key pitfalls to avoid (Hard-earned experience! Don't fall for these) 1. Pitfalls for scenic area tickets ❌ Never trust the "low-price internal tickets" or "fast-track tickets" sold by scalpers at the entrance. It's all a scam. Not only will you pay extra, but you might also end up with fake or invalid tickets. ✅ For core scenic areas like Taining Dajin Lake and Zhaixia Grand Canyon, you must book tickets on official platforms 1 day in advance. During peak season, there's a high chance there will be no tickets available on-site. ✅ 2026 perk! With your boarding pass for flights arriving at Sanming Shaxian Airport + your ID card, you can visit nearly 20 scenic areas, including Shangshudi and the Sangang Industrial Tourism Zone, for free within 7 days. Don't waste this offer. 2. Pitfalls for transportation ❌ Don't blindly rent an e-bike to ride around the island or to scenic areas! Sanming has many mountainous roads with many curves and steep slopes. Some mountain sections prohibit e-bikes, making riding dangerous and prone to traffic violations. ❌ Parking spaces in Taining Ancient Town and Youxi Terraces are extremely scarce during peak season. Don't blindly drive into the scenic area to look for parking; it's a waste of time. ✅ When driving on mountain roads, be sure to slow down. Tunnels have speed limits of 60–80 km/h. Fill up your gas tank before heading to remote scenic areas, as gas stations in mountain areas are far apart. ✅ During peak season, park in official parking lots in the county town and transfer to the official scenic area shuttle bus to save money and worry. 3. Pitfalls for shopping ❌ Never buy red mushrooms or mountain goods sold on the Dajin Lake cruise! They are heavily overpriced—more than 30% more expensive than physical stores in the county—and the quality is not guaranteed. ❌ Be cautious about entering souvenir shops or "internet-famous" snack shops inside scenic areas. They are expensive, have small portions, and the taste is not authentic. The price-performance ratio is very low. ✅ For snacks, look for old shops in old streets or small shops crowded with locals. The taste is authentic, affordable, and good value. ✅ If you want to buy souvenirs like dried meat or Jiucengguo, buy them at local supermarkets in the county town for much better value. 4. Pitfalls for the experience ❌ Be cautious about visiting Dajin Lake during the rainy season (May–June, plum rain season). It's often foggy, which blocks the Danxia scenery, visibility is very poor, and boat trips may be canceled due to weather. ❌ If you are slightly overweight, carrying a backpack, or wearing thick clothes, be cautious about entering the "Skyline" at Taoyuan Cave. The passage is extremely narrow, and it's very easy to get stuck, leaving you unable to move forward or backward. ✅ When visiting cave scenic areas like Yuhua Cave, the temperature inside is constant and cool, and the ground is damp. Be sure to bring a light jacket and wear non-slip sneakers. ✅ For Dajin Lake, prioritize the morning boat (departing at 8:30 AM) to avoid the afternoon crowds. You'll get better photos without obstructions and have a better experience. 5. Pitfalls for clothing and accommodation ❌ Don't bring too much heavy luggage! There is a large temperature difference between morning and evening in the Sanming mountains. You don't need thick clothes; just bring a light jacket and comfortable sneakers for light travel. ❌ Don't stay in overpriced homestays around the scenic area; the environment is average and the price is high. ✅ Prioritize staying in Shaxian urban area or Taining county town. Transportation is convenient, dining options are complete, and accommodation offers better value. V. Travel tips 1. Best time to visit: March–May and September–November. The climate is mild, the weather is sunny, and the mountain and water scenery is at its best. Avoid the scorching heat and rainy season. 2. Clothing advice: Light-colored clothes are perfect for mountain and water scenery and look great in photos. There is a lot of walking, so be sure to wear non-slip, comfortable shoes. 3. Food reminder: Sanming dishes and snacks come in huge portions. Don't order too much to avoid waste. 4. Pace advice: Sanming is suitable for slow travel. Hey everyone! I've made 4 trips to Sanming just for that taste of authentic Shaxian snacks! The weather in September–October is perfect—not too cold, not too hot. Here is my comprehensive, tried-and-tested guide👇 🍜 Food (Seriously, don't just stick to mixed noodles and wontons!) Local Shaxian mixed noodles use chewy alkaline noodles coated in a thick, creamy peanut sauce—every strand is packed with flavor! The standard pairing is a bowl of wontons with thin skins and bouncy, juicy fillings. Miaomen Wonton is a local institution; the meat filling is so substantial you can actually taste the texture. Don't miss these hidden gems🔥: · Crystal Shumai: Completely different from the ones elsewhere, the skin is transparent! Filled with vermicelli and diced meat, it's amazing dipped in fermented black bean soy sauce · Taro Dumplings (Keqiu Bao): The skin is made of taro and tapioca starch, so bouncy you could play ping pong with it; the filling is diced bamboo shoots, fresh meat, and shiitake mushrooms · Luolan Shaobing: Hidden in the alleys, crispy and flaky right out of the oven, full of charcoal flavor · Datian Nine-Layer Rice Cake: A work of art among rice dishes, stacked 9 layers high, soft, chewy, and bouncy · Yongan Rice Noodles: Mixed with the soul of Yongan yellow chili sauce, fresh and spicy, paired with blanched fresh meat, you'll be hooked in one bite · Jianning Spicy Rice Rolls: Sour, spicy, and refreshing; having a bowl in the morning is so satisfying ⚠️Snack portions are on the smaller side, so it's perfect for trying a variety of items. Just don't order too much at once! 🗺️ Itinerary (The best of my 4 trips) Sanming is a "scattered city" with Shaxian, Taining, Jiangle, and Youxi each in different areas, with 1–2 hours of travel time between attractions. The best way to explore is to pick 2–3 counties and dive deep! Day 1 Shaxian food tour: Sanming North Station > Stroll through Dongmen Ancient Street (the bluestone street is great for photos) > Lunch in the old alleys for authentic snacks > Afternoon at Taojin Mountain to see the 38m giant reclining Buddha > Evening at Qifeng Diecui for the sunset and walk the Qiulong Skywalk > Night light show at Wenchang Pavilion Day 2 Taining scenery: Take the high-speed train from Shaxian to Taining (40 mins) > Dajin Lake cruise to see the Danxia landforms on water (ticket + boat ticket approx. 163 yuan) > Ganlu Temple "supported by a single pillar" > Afternoon at Zhaixia Grand Canyon > Evening stroll in Taining Ancient City Day 3 Yongan hidden gems: Challenge the "Thread of Sky" at Yongan Taoyuan Cave (the narrowest point is only 40cm) > Afternoon at Linyin Stone Forest to see the 250-million-year-old stone pillar formations > If you have time, visit Shangping Hehezhidao Art Park (free!) 📸 Best photo spots (These will blow up your social media) · Qifeng Diecui U-shaped glass viewing platform: Overlook the Shaxi River from 60m in the air, perfect for photos · Sunset by the Shaxi River: The sunset dyes the river the color of orange soda, with Wenchang Pavilion reflected on the water · Yongan Shangping Art Park: Leopard tail sculptures, valley windmills, vinyl record installations—effortless, vibrant photos · Youxi Guxi Xinghe: "Nianhua" finger, mirror of the sky, rainbow ladder—switch between Instagram-style and rustic mountain vibes at will · Dongmen Ancient Street: Century-old Fujian-style houses, black tiles and white walls with lots of character 🏠 Accommodation (Great value for money) · Shaxian: Shanque Suji Homestay, hidden at No. 15 Dongmen Ancient Street, renovated from a century-old Fujian house, within walking distance of Qifeng Diecui · Taining: Staying near the ancient city is most convenient for strolling and late-night snacks · Downtown: Sanming Hotel Tianyuan International, attentive details and high comfort; or Xinyue Smart Hotel near Sanming Station, with full-room smart controls ⚠️ Tips to avoid pitfalls (Lessons learned the hard way) 1. Sanming Station and Sanming North Station are completely different! Don't mix them up or you'll waste money 2. Many "authentic old shops" outside the Shaxian Snack Culture City are simplified versions run by outsiders. Look for decades-old shops like Miaomen Wonton, Jialan Shumai, and Feijie Snacks 3. Some farm-style restaurants in Taining use "market price" as a trap. Ask for the price before sitting down 4. Don't oversleep for the 8:00 AM first boat at Dajin Lake; if you're late, you'll have to wait for the next one 5. Yuhua Cave is slippery inside, so wear non-slip shoes; it's warm at the entrance but cold inside, so bring a light jacket 6. Buy Shaxian pressed duck that is packaged and labeled properly 7. Old-established shops are crowded during meal times; avoid the 12:00–1:00 PM peak Sanming is such a hidden gem! It's uncrowded, beautiful, and affordable. Go now before it gets too popular🏃‍♀️! Ask me any questions in the comments—my 4 trips weren't for nothing!

This route is perfect for those who want to see Danxia landforms without spending all four days on the road. Use Sanming as your high-speed rail arrival and car rental pickup point, then head north to connect Jiangle and Taining. Escape the humidity in caves, view cliffs from the stream, and return to the ancient town at night. The pace is much more relaxed than rushing to a single major scenic spot. 🚗 On the day of arrival, stay in downtown Sanming and spend the night before setting off; it's more reliable. For dinner, try Shaxian snacks. Plan simple meals like mixed noodles or wontons while on the road; they serve as fuel, so there's no need to go out of your way to visit specific shops just for the sake of checking them off your list. Dedicate the second day to Yuhua Cave in Jiangle. The cave environment is completely different from the outdoor landscape, making it especially suitable for muggy or rainy weather. Wear non-slip shoes. The lighting inside the cave is dim, so please don't block the tour path while taking photos. 🪨 After leaving Yuhua Cave, spend the afternoon enjoying the forest vibes around Changkou. You don't need to hike long distances here; a slow walk along the forest edge or village borders is enough to get some fresh air. If you want to walk the greenways or head into the mountains, be sure to check the daily rainfall and road alerts before setting off. The drive from Jiangle to Taining is most comfortable during the day. The mountain scenery might make you want to stop frequently, but only park in designated scenic overlooks or safe areas. Keep a light jacket and rain gear in the car, as the valleys and caves in early autumn often feel cooler than the city. 🌿 Once in Taining, prioritize Shangqing Stream on sunny days. Recent public reports still feature scenes of bamboo rafts drifting through Danxia red cliffs and shaded streams. It's perfect for low-angle shots capturing the layers of the water, rafts, and cliffs. Whether the rafts are operating, queue times, and water levels are all subject to the scenic area's daily notifications. 🛶 Don't rush to leave on the fourth day; set aside time in the morning or evening for a leisurely stroll through Taining Ancient Town. The alleys of the ancient town are great for admiring the eaves, stone paths, and daily street life. If you happen to come across a performance, feel free to watch, but don't plan your schedule around temporary shows. Energy management can be simple: less sun exposure on cave days, less walking on bamboo raft days, and flexibility on ancient town days. If traveling with seniors or children, skip the mountain hiking add-ons and stick to the three core experiences: Yuhua Cave, Shangqing Stream, and the Ancient Town. Your four days will still be well-spent. ☔ Before you set off, please double-check the opening information, bamboo raft schedules, weather, and road conditions for Dajin Lake, Shangqing Stream, Yuhua Cave, and Taining Ancient Town. Always prioritize weather conditions for water and mountain routes. This route is best for those in Fuzhou, Xiamen, and surrounding central Fujian areas who want to use a weekend plus two days off to easily explore Danxia landforms, caves, and ancient towns.

Please do not enter without permission and respect the local residents' lives and private property. 3. Temperatures inside caves and canyons are lower and the light is dimmer. Prepare a jacket in advance and adjust your shooting parameters to avoid blurry images. 4. Mountain weather is changeable, and it is prone to fog and rain in the afternoon. Prioritize morning for outdoor shooting, as the light is stable and the weather is suitable. 5. Popular niche photography spots will have increased foot traffic during holidays. It is recommended to shoot early in the morning to avoid the crowds and get clean, empty shots. 6. Follow scenic area safety regulations during night tours and bamboo rafting.
