But what stands out is a pagoda on top of a hill that you can get through by going up a long flight of stairs. The ancient village preserves over 150 structures, including ancestral halls, academies, and residences, which are typical examples of Gan-style architecture. Most date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties and feature brick-and-wood construction with column-and-tie framing. The walls are built with blue bricks in a "two-stretcher, one-header" hollow pattern. The gables are diverse, and the various tile-capped firewalls, available in both single and double layers, are particularly unique. Descendants of Ouyang Xiu arrived in Diaoyuan during the Southern Song Dynasty and have thrived there ever since. Ouyang is the primary surname in the village, and there is a main Ouyang clan ancestral hall at the village entrance.
