Avoid the crowds at the beach in July; here are 8 cool and refreshing spots I've personally tested.
You don't have to flock to popular beaches in July. To the north are grasslands and forests, to the west are cool plateau breezes, and to the south are villages, ancient towns, and stream valleys.
This list covers everything from destinations within a 2-hour high-speed rail ride to inter-provincial long-distance trips, each offering unique urban charm, wild fun, artistic flair, and old-world flavors, perfect for shaking off the summer heat on the road.
01 Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture | Guizhou
When you go to Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village in the morning, don't rush straight to the observation deck. Walk slowly along the wind-and-rain bridge, admire the stilt houses first, then head to the observation deck for panoramic photos.
⏰ Before 8 AM, group tours haven't fully arrived, and the wooden houses are often shrouded in mist, making photos much clearer than at noon.
In the afternoon, switch to Zhaoxing Dong Village. The drum tower complex is great for a leisurely stroll, and after rain, you can hear the eaves dripping onto the stone paths.
📍 The alleys near Zhituan Drum Tower are quieter than the main street. If you want to see Dong ethnic song and dance performances, inquire about the day's schedule in advance, don't just focus on popular photo spots.
Zhenyuan Ancient Town is best visited in the evening. Walk along the Wuyang River to Zhusheng Bridge. As the river breeze picks up, the stone bridge and old houses are bathed in a warm orange glow from the sunset. Xianghuoyan is more suitable for those who enjoy stream valleys and hiking; wear non-slip shoes.
⚠️ Don't try to squeeze all four spots into one day. Allocate at least half a day for each village and ancient town to avoid rushing.
02 Hulunbuir City | Inner Mongolia
In July, the Hulunbuir Grassland has strong daytime sun, so the mornings and evenings are truly comfortable.
⏰ Depart from Hailar around 6 or 7 AM. The grass tips will be dewy, and the cattle and sheep by the roadside will be awake before the tourists. The Morigele River area is great for viewing winding rivers, but it's windy at the observation points, so a light jacket is a must.
If you only have one day, it's recommended to choose either Ergun Wetland or Morigele River; don't try to see too much. The grassland routes may look empty, but driving takes dozens of kilometers, and your driver's time is more valuable than you think.
📍 You can stop to photograph the grassy slopes near Jinzhanghan, but do not drive into herders' pastures without permission.
🍜 Hand-grabbed mutton, milk tea, and roasted lamb chops are best eaten in Hailar city, where there are more restaurant choices and prices are more stable than in scenic areas.
⚠️ The UV index is very high in July. Hats, sunscreen, and insect repellent are essential; don't get lazy even on cloudy days.
03 Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai
Nianbaoyuze is suitable for those who want to see snow-capped mountains, lakes, and alpine meadows, but confirm the scenic area's opening status and road conditions before departing, based on the official announcement for that day.
⏰ The light is stable from 9 AM to 11 AM, and the lake surface is less likely to be ruffled by strong winds, making photos clearer.
The First Bend of the Yellow River is best viewed in the evening to see the changing colors, as the river winds like a slowly turning ribbon.
📍 After reaching the observation deck, don't rush to the very front. A higher vantage point from the side can capture both the river bend and the grassy slopes in the frame.
The altitude here is high, so avoid strenuous hiking for the first two days. Walk slowly, drink less alcohol, and drink plenty of water.
⚠️ Plateau weather can change rapidly. A raincoat is more practical than a pretty dress. If traveling with seniors or young children, allow ample rest time.
04 Panjin City | Liaoning
The Red Beach Scenic Corridor is better visited in the afternoon and left in the evening.
⏰ After 3 PM, the light softens, and the layers of reeds and mudflats look better than at noon. Walking on the wooden boardwalk is also less hot. Tidal changes and wind direction can affect the viewing experience, so check the day's tides before you go.
📍 Take the scenic shuttle bus from the visitor center to the core section, then walk to see the wetlands. This saves more energy than hiking from the start. Don't just photograph the red expanse; the reeds, shallow waters, and waterbirds along the way create a more picturesque scene.
🍜 Panjin river crabs are best eaten at restaurants in the city. Don't buy overpriced set meals casually at the scenic area entrance. July weather is muggy, and there are many mosquitoes in the wetlands, so keep long-sleeved thin shirts and insect repellent in your carry-on bag.
05 Tonghua City | Jilin
Tonghua is suitable for a day trip that includes Ji'an. In the morning, visit the Goguryeo Cultural Relics and Historic Sites. Start with the General's Tomb and the Stele of Gwanggaeto the Great; the stone structures have a powerful presence.
⏰ Arrive before 9 AM when there are fewer people, the light isn't harsh, and explanations are easier to hear. Opening arrangements and tickets are subject to official announcements on the day.
In the afternoon, go to the Ji'an Rapeseed Flower Sea. The flower fields are best explored slowly; do not step into the furrows for photos.
📍 Allow travel time from Ji'an city to the flower sea. The peak blooming period for rapeseed flowers can be affected by weather, so it's best to inquire about the local flower situation on the day of your visit.
🍜 For lunch, you can find Goguryeo cold noodles and barbecue in Ji'an city. The refreshing cold noodles are perfect for combating the July heat.
⚠️ The distance between cultural sites is not short. If traveling with family, it's recommended to charter a car or drive yourself to avoid wasting time waiting for transportation.
06 Daxing'anling Prefecture | Heilongjiang
The Arctic Village Tourist Area is suitable for a leisurely overnight stay, not a quick 2-hour visit.
⏰ In the morning, take a walk along the Heilongjiang River. The air carries the moist scent of trees, and the river is quieter than at noon. The wooden houses, border scenery, and post office in Arctic Village can all be explored along the way; walking is more comfortable than frequent taxi rides.
📍 At night, you can watch the stars in the village, but it depends on cloud cover; don't expect the "aurora" to be a guaranteed sight. The Daxing'anling forest environment is more suitable for short forest walks during a self-driving trip. Wear long pants and non-slip shoes, and do not leave the designated paths.
⚠️ It's still cool in the mornings and evenings here in July. Insect repellent is a must. Plan for gas, supplies, and accommodation in advance, as there are few shops on forest roads, and cell phone signals can be intermittent.
07 Xuzhou City | Jiangsu
Xuzhou is more than just a city to pass through for a meal. Yunlong Lake is perfect for an evening stroll in July.
⏰ After 5:30 PM, start from Binhu Park and walk along the lake towards Yunlong Mountain. The breeze from the water makes it feel significantly cooler than the city center.
📍 If you want to see the city's night view, you can focus your route on the Hudong Road area, first admiring the lake, then finding nearby small restaurants for dinner. Climbing Yunlong Mountain at noon is not recommended, as the steps get scorching hot; early morning or before sunset is more suitable.
🍜 Xuzhou's Digou chicken, Shata soup, and barbecue are all worth trying. Old shops in the city center are usually more authentic than restaurants in scenic areas.
⚠️ Afternoon showers are common in July. Bring a folding umbrella. After the rain, the water droplets on the lotus leaves by the lake are more beautiful than any filter.
08 Xiangyang City | Hubei
Gulongzhong is best visited in the morning. Start by walking from the archway to the thatched cottage, then see the six-sided well and the nearby shaded paths.
⏰ Around 8 AM, the temperature hasn't fully risen, and tree shadows fall on the stone paths, making the walk easier than in the afternoon.
📍 If you only have half a day, three hours are sufficient for Gulongzhong; don't try to walk every small path. If you want to see the complete mountain and forest scenery, you can climb slowly, but wear comfortable shoes. If traveling with seniors, avoid steep slopes.
Have lunch back in Xiangyang city. Beef noodles, yellow wine, and local stir-fries are more convenient.
⚠️ Some areas of Gulongzhong have limited shade, so it's not recommended to wander around at noon. Tickets, opening hours, and shuttle arrangements are subject to official announcements on the day.
To avoid the crowds in July, prioritize weekdays for northern grasslands and forests, and for southern ancient towns, try to start early and explore late.
If I had to pick just three, I'd choose Hulunbuir for the wind, Golog for the plateau, and Xuzhou for a food tour, as both budget and physical exertion are easier to manage.
