I’ve discovered a hidden treasure in Nagoya! Tokugawa-en is absolutely stunning and perfect for photos 📸 🏯 I finally visited the Owari Tokugawa family's daimyo garden, featuring a pond-strolling style! The moment I entered, I was blown away. The magnificent landscapes of the Kiso Three Rivers and Ise Bay are masterfully miniaturized within this garden—it's incredible 😳 . 🌿 The garden is designed around a central pond, with beautifully placed waterfalls and valleys. Strolling along the paths to the sound of trickling water feels like stepping into a traditional painting. Continuing my quick stroll along the approach, I stumbled upon another rustic, unpainted wooden torii gate. But this time, it wasn’t the ocean view stealing the spotlight—it was the chunky "big frog" stone statue perched on the left reef, glaring out at the Pacific with an adorably sassy expression! At Futami Okitama Shrine, frogs (Kaeru) hold the prestigious title of divine messengers. Because their Japanese name sounds exactly like the word for "to return," they aren't just here as a cute photo op; they are absolute masters of the good-luck pun. Passing travelers always stop to give them a pet and say a quick prayer, hoping for a safe "return" from their trips, a multiplied "return" on spent money, or even the "return" of their youthful beauty. Standing in front of the torii gate, watching this frog statue brave the fierce ocean winds with an unwavering gaze fixed on the horizon, I felt a strangely soothing sense of humor. During this spontaneous pit stop, I decided to make an earnest wish too: I hope all the money I spent on this trip will take a cue from the frog's namesake and obediently "hop" right back into my bank account once I get home!

Compared to the white walls and gray tiles of Himeji Castle, I am more drawn to this thousand-year-old temple on the mountain. The 27th stop on the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage, the filming location of Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Nie Yinniang — Shosha San Engyo-ji Temple. The transportation is a bit of a hassle, but seeing it makes the trip worth it. 🚌 Complete transportation guide (tested and no detours) 📍 Starting point: JR Himeji Station North Exit After exiting, head straight to the Shinki Bus Information Center and just tell the counter you want to buy the Shosha San combo ticket. 🎫 First ticket: round-trip cable car + bus combo 💰 1,700 yen ✨ Key point: You must buy the combo ticket here! It’s cheaper than buying separately and includes the shuttle bus from the foot of the mountain to the cable car station. Late November is ginkgo-viewing season in Japan. While the famous "ginkgo avenues" are stunning, there's also something magical about a massive century-old ginkgo tree standing all on its own. In Minamiise Town, Mie Prefecture, right next to the now-closed Hobara Elementary School, grows a magnificent ginkgo tree estimated to be around 400 years old. Towering over the three-story school building, it serves as a cherished symbol of the Hobara area. Even though the school has closed its doors, the local community has come together to beautifully preserve this remarkable tree. Every autumn, from late November to early December, its massive canopy turns a brilliant, awe-inspiring golden yellow, drawing countless photography enthusiasts who make a special trip just to capture it. Additionally, during peak viewing season, the tree is illuminated at night, offering a magical vibe completely different from the daytime. Located in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, Kumano Hongu Taisha is one of the Kumano Sanzan and serves as the head shrine for approximately 3,000 Kumano shrines across Japan. If you're visiting the Kumano Sanzan and aren't driving, be prepared for at least a two-day, one-night trip. Take my experience as an example: I started my journey at Hineno Station and caught the first Limited Express Kuroshio train, arriving in Shingu City right at noon. Since I was carrying luggage, I had to head straight to the Shingu City Tourism Association outside the station to store it. Conveniently, the bus stop for Hongu Taisha is right there, allowing me to hop on the bus immediately after dropping off my bags. The bus ride from Shingu City to Hongu Taisha takes about an hour, and the scenery along the way is quite beautiful. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the tranquility of nature, you'll absolutely love it here. Since I visited on a weekday, there were very few tourists, making it truly peaceful and relaxing. Generally, there are two ways to get to Shingu City: First, the Limited Express Kuroshio, coming from the Osaka or Wakayama direction. Second, the Limited Express Nanki, coming from the Nagoya or Ise direction. I highly recommend purchasing a JR Pass, as it can save you a ton on transportation costs—it practically pays for itself! Surrounded by towering ancient cedars, with a gentle breeze rustling the treetops, the air is filled with a profound serenity. Following the gravel path, you arrive at the foot of the stone steps leading to the main shrine—the very boundary between the mortal world and the divine realm. Here, everyone must put away their phones and ascend the stairs with a reverent heart. There are no elaborate or ornate decorations; only unpainted wooden architecture that radiates a pure, pristine beauty. Standing before the white silk curtains with your hands clasped in prayer, you cannot see the inner sanctum itself, yet its solemn and sacred presence touches your very soul. In the rhythmic ritual of 'two bows, two claps, and one bow,' all the accumulated noise and clutter of everyday life are instantly washed away, leaving behind an overwhelming sense of profound peace and deeply moving tranquility.

I went to Ise for work, and figured I'd stroll around Ise Jingu Shrine while I was there... but it was a blistering 38℃ (100℉) that day🥵 It was way too hot, so I gave up😂 No way- Instead, I went on a bar crawl to 2 spots near my accommodation that I had been curious about🍺 First up was an izakaya founded in 1914, so famous that they say "everyone in Ise knows it." 📍 Ichigatsuya. Walking inside, there's a long counter and a classic, old-school vibe✨ Even on a weekday evening, it was almost completely packed with locals. The menu didn't have prices on it, which made me a bit nervous at first😳 But it's a system where you write down what you want on a piece of paper and hand it over. We ordered sashimi, pickled octopus, chilled tofu, grilled chicken wings, and more🍺 After 2 draft beers, 1 bottled beer, 1 serving of sake, and eating a bunch of different dishes, we asked for the check! The owner whipped out a giant abacus and started clicking away, going "Here ya go!"🧮 It came out to about 4,500 yen for the 2 of us😳 I couldn't help but blurt out, "That's so cheap!"😂 For our 2nd stop, we headed to a spot recommended by a local sitting next to us at Ichigatsuya, 📍 Uosuzu🐟 Their handwritten menu was packed with the day's recommendations. They're popular for their thick slices of seasonal sashimi, and they have an amazing sake selection🍶 Since we had just eaten sashimi, we ordered burdock root salad, grilled shiitake mushrooms, chanja, fried camembert cheese, and a few other things✨ Plus, they mentioned anything that isn't raw is OK for takeout, so we got a jumbo shrimp tempura roll and fried chicken gizzards to go and enjoyed them relaxing back at our accommodation😊 A lot of places were closed since it was just after a three-day weekend, but just walking around, I saw so many spots that caught my eye. My trusty Goshuin (shrine stamp) book was completely full, so I really wanted to get a new one from Ise Grand Shrine. But I had absolutely no time! So, what's the game plan!? 🚩Itinerary Day 1: Arrived in Ise around 4:00 PM. First up, I rushed to the gift shop at , which stays open until 9:00 PM💨 They have a huge variety of Goshuin books and matching carrying pouches. Since it's something I'll use for a long time, I bought a gorgeous one as a keepsake✨ 5. 30 PM: Headed to for some for dinner💨💨💨 It was unbelievably delicious❣️ Around 6:00 PM: Popped into the FamilyMart right in front of Ise Station💨💨 What a surprise! It was stocked with famous local Ise specialties, just like a proper souvenir shop! They even had local craft beers I'd never seen before❣️ I grabbed a few as souvenirs for myself😆 6. 30 PM: Checked into the hotel, right by the station! It features a large public bath, and you can conveniently check how crowded it is right from your room. So comfy! Their stewed Matsusaka beef tendon is simply out of this world! 🏠Recommended Stay Literally right in front of the station, yet so quiet and peaceful! There are plenty of dining options nearby. Having a large public bath is a huge plus!

If you’re visiting Ise, I’d definitely recommend setting aside half a day for Okage Yokocho and Ise Jingu. It’s the perfect mix of great food, beautiful scenery, and a slower pace that makes you want to stay a little longer. We started at Okage Yokocho, a charming old street filled with traditional buildings, local snacks, and souvenir shops. It has a nostalgic atmosphere that’s fun to explore even if you don’t have a plan. Our first stop was Yakimono Taijiro, where we tried the famous Tamago Sando. The eggs were unbelievably soft and fluffy, and the sandwich was simple in the best way. It ended up being one of my favorite things I ate in Ise. Next, we stopped by Henbaya Shoten. There was about a 20-minute wait, but it gave us a chance to slow down for a bit. We ordered their traditional rice cakes with tea and enjoyed them upstairs. The atmosphere was calm and cozy, making it the perfect place to take a break before exploring more. Of course, we couldn’t leave without trying the famous Butasute croquette. Even though there was a line, it moved pretty quickly. The croquette came out fresh, with a crispy coating and a warm, flavorful filling. As we wandered through the street, we also picked up a butaman from Oiseya Honpo. If you happen to walk past it, it’s an easy snack that’s definitely worth grabbing. One thing you absolutely shouldn’t miss is Shiro Mochi Kuro Mochi, a local specialty from Ise. The red bean paste is incredibly smooth, and both the white and black mochi have their own unique flavor. I honestly couldn’t choose a favorite. After eating our way through Okage Yokocho, we headed to Ise Jingu, visiting both the Outer Shrine (Geku) and the Inner Shrine (Naiku). Both shrine grounds are surrounded by towering trees, making them wonderful places for a quiet walk. We picked up an omamori, said a little prayer, and simply enjoyed taking our time. Looking back, this ended up being one of my favorite afternoons in Ise. Good food, beautiful walks, and one of Japan’s most famous shrines—all without ever feeling rushed.
