Depending on whether your flight arrives in the morning, spend your first two or three days in Athens. I typically stay in the Plaka neighborhood near Hadrian’s Library. You can snap photos of this ancient ruin right outside your door without spending money on a ticket. It’s highly recommended to get an Athens City Pass, which covers a single entry to the Acropolis along with five other archaeological sites—it’ll save you a good deal of money. Day 1: Try to hit the Acropolis and the Parthenon as early in the morning as possible. The sun gets incredibly intense, and there are no trees or shade at the top. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes that can handle rocky, uneven paths. For stunning night photography, shoot from the base of the hill. If you're a history buff, the Acropolis Museum is an absolute must-visit. However, avoid dining in this immediate area, as prices tend to be inflated. Make your way down the hill to the Ancient Agora; its museum is housed inside the Stoa of Attalos. If you still have energy, check out the incredibly well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus nearby. Spend your evening wandering the boutique shops in Plaka—this is also a great spot for dinner, where you'll find generous portion sizes. Day 2: Hop on the metro to the Panathenaic Stadium. If you're up for it, you can also swing by Hadrian’s Gate and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Head back towards the Roman Agora and stroll over to Monastiraki Square, home to several churches and museums, as well as Ermou, the city’s primary shopping street. If you happen to be there on a Sunday, don't miss the local flea market. Days 3 to 5 (or 6): Catch a ferry to Santorini. You can either stay for a day or two, or just spend a half-day exploring before hopping to other islands like Naxos, Mykonos, Crete, or Ios. While I find Santorini undeniably breathtaking, it is quite crowded and pricey—the same goes for Mykonos—but they are definitely prime spots for Instagram-worthy photos. If you're all about sun and sand, consider basing yourself on one of the less crowded islands and taking day-trip ferries for some island hopping. Day 6 or 7: Head back to Athens. Make your way to Syntagma Square to catch the Changing of the Guard ceremony. Just ahead to your left is the main commercial pedestrian street. To the right and behind the square is the luxury shopping district and the massive six-story Attica department store, which carries all the major European and American brands. A quick shopping tip: ask the sales associate for a tourist shopping card. They’ll log your items, tag them with a matching number, and send them to the main checkout counter. This allows you to keep browsing hands-free, pay for everything at once, and process your tax refund form together (passport required) to claim your 10% VAT refund. At the airport, get your form stamped by customs (located near the airline counters—they might need to inspect your purchases, so don’t check your luggage right away). Once you're through security, present your stamped form to collect your refund. Note that the tax refund rate for luxury brands like LV is 12%. At the end of the pedestrian street lies Plaka, teeming with dining options. Nearby, you can wander through the Anafiotika neighborhood; it's mostly a local residential area with very few tourists, but its charming whitewashed houses will make you feel like you're still out on the Greek islands. Day 7 or 8: Fly home. Spending your final night in Athens is the best way to ensure you don't miss your flight.

Is it the much-admired Santorini, or Athens, Mykonos, Ios, Naxos, Rhodes, Corfu, Hydra, Paros, or Crete? Besides the mainland, Greece has over 200 islands; one could spend a lifetime and still not see them all. It also boasts numerous ancient sites, befitting its status as one of the four ancient civilizations. I myself have only visited a dozen or so, some large, some small. I took some sunset photos and wanted to share them with other travelers; see which view is your favorite.

Today, I visited Skarkos, an archaeological site in Ios dating back to 3000 BC. You have to park your car near the soccer field at the bottom of the hill and hike up for about 10 minutes. The entrance fee is 5 euros per person. The site isn't very large, and you can easily walk through the whole thing in under an hour—it's essentially just ruins. While the view overlooking the coast from the hill is nice, you can enjoy the exact same scenery from the outside without a ticket. Honestly, I don't think it was worth the money. None of the artifacts discovered there are actually on display at the site, quite unlike the Terracotta Army. In fact, you're better off going to the nearby free windmill attraction, which offers a fantastic panoramic view of this entire ancient civilization site.

We spent the final leg of our Greece trip on Ios, where we rented a new, little white villa up on the hillside. The interior was fully equipped, and the outdoor courtyard featured a private swimming pool and a hot tub. The biggest surprise was the breathtaking view: from every bedroom, the living room, and the courtyard, you could gaze out over the beautiful Aegean Sea and spot neighboring islands like Santorini and Paros. We enjoyed stunning sunrises and sunsets, as well as the twinkling lights of the town below. It's an 8-minute drive to the downtown square and 15 minutes to the beach. Both areas are bustling with restaurants and shops, and there are supermarkets too, making it incredibly convenient. Strolling through the cobblestone alleys has a uniquely charming vibe, and iconic blue-and-white churches are everywhere. If you're into archaeology, you can also check out the ancient ruins.

#springtravel Have you ever wondered if an island famous for its nightlife could also be the ultimate sanctuary for the soul? In Spring 2026, Ios is shedding its "party-only" reputation to reveal its true identity as a pioneer of regenerative Cycladic tourism. 🌿 Beyond the golden sands of Mylopotas, the island is leading a visionary movement: preserving 99% of its natural landscape to ensure the "Wild Beauty" of Ios remains untouched for generations. 🏛️🌊 Experience the genuine hospitality that Homer himself once praised. 🏮 From the UNESCO-recognized prehistoric settlement of Skarkos—one of the best-preserved sites in the Aegean—to the 365 whitewashed churches that dot the hills like pearls, Ios is a masterclass in well-preserved traditions. In 2026, the island is inviting you to "Slow Travel" through the newly mapped Homeric Trails, supporting local honey producers and cheese artisans who have called these rocky crags home for millennia. Ready to find your own odyssey where the blue of the sea meets the white of the soul? 🌅🌿💎 📍 5 Tips for Your 2026 Ios Spring Odyssey ✔️ Transportation: There is no airport on Ios, which is the secret to its charm! Take a high-speed ferry from Santorini (40 mins) or Athens (4–6 hrs). Once on land, use the reliable local bus network or rent an e-bike to explore the island’s steep, scenic interior sustainably. 🚢⚡ ✔️ Best Time to Travel: Late April to June is the "Golden Window." In 2026, you'll enjoy a perfect 24°C and blooming wildflowers. This shoulder season also means the new Sustainable Tourism Fee (introduced for 2026) is at its lowest rate, directly funding local eco-projects. 🌸🍂 ✔️ Must-Visit Hot Spots: The Tomb of Homer at Plakoto for a brush with legend, the Odysseas Elytis Theater for a sunset performance, and the Skarkos Archaeological Site to witness 5,000 years of civilization. 🏛️🎭 ✔️ Suggested Itinerary: AM: Explore the winding alleys of Chora and catch the view from Panagia Gremiotissa. Midday: A "Zero-Waste" trek to the remote Manganari Beach. PM: A traditional farm-to-table dinner in a local taverna celebrating Ios's artisanal cheeses. 🏺🌅 ✔️ "Do’s & Don'ts" Tips: · DO: Participate in "Amorgorama" style marine protection; many local boat operators now offer discounts for guests who join "Ghost Net" recovery missions. 🌊♻️ · DO: Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) when entering any of the 365 churches; it’s a sign of respect for the island's living faith. 🙏 · DON'T: Rely on single-use plastics; under the 2026 "Clean Blue Ios" initiative, the island is strictly reducing plastic—bring your own reusable bottle! 🚫🥤 · DON'T: Stick only to the main square; the real rich culture of Ios is found in the hidden "Upper Chora" alleys where tradition still thrives. 🚫🏘️ #Ios2026 #SustainableGreece #SpringTravel #VisitIos #CycladesLife

💙 Complete Guide to Ios Island & Chora Town If you've visited Santorini but found it too commercialized, make sure to add Ios Island to your travel list! Here, you'll find the same blue-domed white buildings, cobblestone paths, and stunning sea views, but with fewer crowds, budget-friendly prices, and a more authentic Aegean slow-living experience. Where is Ios Island? How to get there? Ios Island is located between Santorini and Mykonos, part of the Cyclades archipelago. Transportation: Take a ferry from Santorini or Athens. Ios Club Sunset Bar: The best sunset bar to watch the sun dip into the Aegean Sea—perfect for photos. Harmony Mexican: A cliffside Mexican restaurant with stunning views. 🛏 Recommended Accommodations Liostasi Hotel & Suites: A five-star boutique resort with hillside rooms offering views of the Aegean Sea. Ios Palace Hotel: A beachfront resort ideal for families or couples. 👉 Tip: Choose accommodations near the town or beaches for convenience and scenic views. Day 2: Snorkeling & water activities at Mylopotas Beach → Experience Chora's nightlife (Ios nightlife is renowned in the Cyclades). Day 3: Depending on your departure, visit Manganari Beach or take a day trip to nearby islands. Ios Island lacks the crowds of Santorini but retains the pristine charm of the Aegean Sea. Getting lost in the alleys of Chora Town, watching the sunset from a church hilltop, or lazily lounging on the beach—this is what a vacation should feel like. If you love blue-domed white houses and want to escape the tourist crowds, Ios Island will surely amaze you.

#mediterraneanfood Our trip to Greece was a sun-soaked feast, and the food? Unforgettable. Hands down the best culinary travel experience! For quick and delicious meals, we turned to gyros—fresh pita, tender meat, crispy fries, and creamy tzatziki, all for just a few euros. You really can’t beat that combo! We also indulged in heartier Greek classics like: Moussaka – layers of eggplant, spiced meat, and béchamel, baked to perfection. Lamb Kleftiko – slow-cooked lamb wrapped in paper with lemon, herbs, and vegetables. Spanakopita – Flaky spinach and feta pie. With the summer heat, ice cream became a daily ritual (no regrets), and iced coffees—especially frappés—kept us going between beach days and sightseeing. We sipped local wine, ate baklava for dessert (layers of honey-soaked pastry and nuts), and basically lived our best Mediterranean life.

#traveldiaries Just returned from an amazing trip to Ios Island, and it was such a delight! 🌊 This place is known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife, but I was pleasantly surprised by its charming villages too. I spent a lot of time at Mylopotas Beach, where the soft sand and crystal-clear water made it a perfect spot to relax. Best of all, there’s no entrance fee! I also explored Chora, the main town, with its whitewashed buildings and narrow streets. I had to visit the archaeological site of Skarkos; the entry was just 3 euros, and the history was fascinating. For sunsets, Ios has some of the best views—head to the old windmill for an unforgettable sight. The local tavernas serve incredible food; don’t miss the moussaka! Ios is the perfect blend of relaxation and fun. Can’t wait to return! #trip #IosIsland #GreekGetaway #BeachVibes #CharmingVillages #SunsetMagic

The most friendliest island in greece, the beautiful Ios. From the moment you set off the ferry everyone is there to please you. Transportation is great every 10 minutes there is a bus taking you from the port to the large party beach Mylopotas. Hardly any traffic, everything is a few minutes away. The most beautiful sunsets, and the best views. After visiting a few islands I have decided this is the best one, catering for all ages.

#myhiddengems Just got back from an unforgettable vacation on Ios Island, Greece, and wow, what a trip! 🌅 Ios is the perfect mix of chill beach vibes and vibrant nightlife. Spent my days lounging on Mylopotas Beach, which has the softest sand and clear blue water—absolutely free to enter! The sunsets there were next-level, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. 🌅 During the day, we explored Chora, the island’s main village, with its white-washed houses, narrow alleys, and cute little shops. The view from the top was breathtaking! One of the highlights was visiting the ancient ruins of Skarkos. For a small entrance fee of €2, we got a glimpse into the island's history. We also took a boat trip to explore hidden coves and smaller beaches, like Manganari Beach, which was so peaceful and picturesque. At night, Ios really comes alive. The Greek island of Ios has a very small cheese factory better known as a cheesery because of its size. This is a great little trip for an afternoon, from Chora it takes about 20 minutes to drive or if you prefer a good hike you can do it in just under two hours. When you arrive you will be greeted and offered the full tour and tasting which comes with some rosé wine. This is what we opted for, it is a very small tour but also very interesting and for a great price I’d highly recommend. You will then be given 10 different cheeses to try, along with some rosé wine and after a small shot of raki to help with digestion. #localguides #greece #greekwine #cheese
