September 2024 Nagoya Trip Day 3 We took the JR train from Nagoya Station to Inuyama Station~ Rolling our luggage from Inuyama Station to the hotel, we could already feel the tranquil and natural vibe of Inuyama City along the way. As we slowly approached the hotel grounds, we were gradually enveloped by lush greenery—towering bamboo groves, ancient trees, manicured shrubs, and classic Japanese stone lanterns came together to form a living scroll of a Japanese garden. Who understands! Picking the right accommodation when traveling to Nagoya with kids is really important. Our 5 days and 4 nights trip was not tiring at all. The kids got to burn off energy every day, and they fell asleep as soon as they hit the bed at night. This is what a vacation feels like for a tired mom. You must book Ghibli Park in advance. We booked the afternoon session, which was much less crowded. The Catbus, Totoro Bus, and Kiki’s Delivery Service bakery were so authentic that the kids didn’t want to leave once inside. Nagoya City Science Museum was a pleasant surprise. It has the world’s largest planetarium dome, and lying down to watch the stars was so soothing. The extreme cold lab lets you experience minus 30 degrees Celsius. The kids wore three layers but still shivered and stomped their feet. Afterward, they said they never want to go to the North Pole again. The Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology was also very interesting. You can try operating a loom and there’s a children’s driving simulation area. The kids drove little cars crashing everywhere and played for an hour without wanting to leave. We visited the SCMaglev and Railway Park twice because the first time wasn’t enough. The Shinkansen driving experience was incredibly realistic, and there were many train models to see. You must buy the limited edition railway bento box—it’s super cute, and the kids even ate an extra bowl of rice. Inuyama Castle is also recommended. Climbing up offers a great view of the Kiso River, and the old street’s gohei mochi (rice cake) is delicious—sweet and chewy. When traveling with kids, be sure to bring a stroller. Although Nagoya’s roads are very flat, kids still get tired after walking for a long time. We suggest visiting 2-3 attractions per day, not packing the schedule too full. Return to the hotel for a rest at noon, then head out again in the afternoon. During my trip to Nagoya, I visited Inuyama Castle (also known as Hakutei Castle, the oldest existing castle tower), one of Japan's five great castles. After visiting, I felt it was well worth the price! First, I highly recommend buying the Inuyama Castle Town Combo Ticket (1,630 yen), which includes train tickets, Inuyama Castle admission, and merchant vouchers all in one package! Take the Meitetsu Inuyama Line (from Nagoya Station towards Shin-Unuma) to Inuyama Station. The waiting platform is Meitetsu Nagoya Station Platform 1, marked with a green box. The journey takes about 30 minutes. After exiting Inuyama Station, walk straight for about 800 meters in front of the station. On your right, you'll see a retro-style street – that's Inuyama Castle Town! The shops on both sides have a strong Edo-era feel. There are also many snacks and desserts along the way. >< You need to take off your shoes before entering Inuyama Castle. Staff will provide a plastic bag for your shoes; please keep them with you. Upon entering, the first set of stairs left me speechless... The incline is incredibly steep! Please walk carefully, one step at a time! As expected of one of Japan's five great castles, the interior showcases original architecture and traditional Japanese woodwork. The second through fourth sets of stairs are equally steep, so please be careful and consider your physical condition. At the top, you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of Inuyama City! Leaving Inuyama Castle, you can visit the nearby Haritsugi Shrine, and then walk back to Inuyama Station along the street. Getting to Inuyama Castle from Nagoya, Japan, is a total breeze. After hopping off the train, I followed the map straight to the entrance. I visited during the off-season, so the place was practically empty—which really allowed me to fully enjoy the experience. I highly recommend touring the inside of the castle. Sure, castles are everywhere in Japan, and you might have castle fatigue, thinking they all look the same. I totally get it—it's like getting burned out on churches after traveling around Europe. But since you've made it all the way here, why not check it out? Inuyama Castle is overflowing with traditional Japanese vibes. Slipping into a kimono for a photoshoot here is an absolute delight. (I did my own shoot—gorgeous scenery and no crowds!) I'd suggest visiting in mid-to-late May. The crowds are thinner, and the summer heat hasn't quite kicked in yet. Transportation: Take the train from Nagoya to Inuyama. From the station, it's just a 15 to 20-minute walk. It's super easy to find, so don't worry—it's completely hassle-free for solo travelers, too.

Museum Meiji-mura is a classic must-visit attraction just outside Nagoya. As Japan's largest open-air architectural museum, the entire park feels like a journey back in time to the Meiji era. Located in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, Meiji Mura is easily accessible via the Meitetsu train and a short bus ride. Ticket Prices Adults: 2,500 yen; High school students: 1,500 yen; Junior high and elementary school students: 700 yen. Preschoolers and visitors born in the Meiji era enjoy free admission. Operating Hours (Currently 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM) April to July, September, and October: 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM August: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM; November: 9:30 AM – 4:00 PM December to February: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM The absolute highlight of the park is that entire Meiji-era buildings from across Japan were "relocated and reconstructed" here. It houses a collection of about 60 historical structures, many of which are designated as Important Cultural Properties. Carefully moved and preserved from various regions, these are not replicas but "genuine ancient buildings." Must-see Churches & Western-Style Architecture: Western-style churches, European-style government buildings, and old banks stand as striking symbols of Japan's modernization and Westernization during the Meiji era. Old Imperial Hotel: The Main Entrance Hall and Lobby of the Imperial Hotel, crafted by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, features stunning geometric designs and is one of the most iconic landmarks in Meiji Mura. Steam Locomotives & Streetcars: You can actually take a ride on historical steam locomotives and antique streetcars inside the park. It's a fully immersive experience, not just a visual one. Schools and Post Offices: Meiji-era elementary schools, post offices, and government buildings perfectly recreate the daily life of that era. Thanks to its incredibly authentic setting, many popular movies and dramas, such as Rurouni Kenshin and JIN, were filmed right here. While visiting, you can dress up in a kimono or Meiji-style clothing for photos, enjoy retro Western-style dishes (like curry and omurice), and even get a special "Meiji Mura limited postmark." The park is massive, covering approximately 1 million square meters, so we highly recommend setting aside half a day to a full day for your visit.

The Inuyama Castle Keep is the oldest existing castle keep in Japan. Additionally, you can visit nearby attractions such as Sanko Inari Shrine⛩️ and Haritsuna Shrine⛩️. Some people say that the 'One Day, Two Castles' itinerary feels a bit rushed, but personally, I think it's just right. Based on the schedule, finishing the Inuyama visit will likely coincide with sunset, making it perfect to head back to the city for dinner.

The most memorable moment of my Nagoya trip was definitely my time in Inuyama! Purchasing the Inuyama Pass at the Nagoya Station Information Center made the trip so convenient! The staff kindly explained each ticket and were very helpful if you had any questions. After arriving at Inuyama Station, I walked to the castle while exploring the castle town. The walk wasn’t too far, and I enjoyed buying snacks along the way, which made the experience even better! The area was so peaceful, and there weren’t too many tourists, which made it even more enjoyable! With the Inuyama Pass, you also receive an admission ticket to Inuyama Castle, so make sure to bring it with you when you head up. The stairs inside the castle were steeper than expected, so it was a bit challenging! But once you reach the top, the view is absolutely stunning, so keep going and enjoy the reward. First, I visited Inuyama Castle, one of Japan's oldest surviving castles, with its wooden structure preserving the charm of the Muromachi period. Standing on the top floor of the castle tower, I enjoyed a panoramic view of the Kiso River and surrounding mountains, with a gentle breeze bringing history and nature to life. After descending, I strolled through Inuyama Castle Town. The old street is lined with quaint shops and wagashi (Japanese sweets) stores housed in renovated townhouses, creating a relaxed and nostalgic atmosphere. Next, I headed to the vibrant Sanko Inari Shrine, famous for its rows of striking red torii gates. Nearby, Haritsuna Shrine stands as a guardian of the ancient castle's legacy. Inuyama Castle Town is slightly smaller or similar in size to Takayama Shopping Street, and has more restaurants along the street, so I recommend skipping breakfast and leaving early to enjoy some street food!!👍🏻👍🏻 🚇Transportation It took about two hours by car from Takayama to Inuyama. 📷Photo Spots Inuyama Castle is a beautiful place to take photos! But you'll need to overcome your fear of heights. It's very windy and the railings are low, so it's a bit scary..ㅎㅎ🥶 🍜Recommended Restaurants The takoyaki at Inuyama Castle Town is the best takoyaki I've ever had. Highly recommended!!👍🏻👍🏻 Inuyama Daruma 犬山だるま This was also really delicious. It was the most satisfying restaurant I've had during my entire trip to Nagoya. It cost about 170,000 won for three people, and the sushi and wagyu were truly delicious.
