A lot of people think Europe is always expensive, but after visiting a few countries, I realized that’s not entirely true. If you plan your trip well, there are places where you can enjoy beautiful cities, great food, and amazing scenery without spending a fortune. Here are three countries that genuinely surprised me. 🇵🇱 Poland Poland was much more enjoyable than I expected. Cities like Kraków and Warsaw are beautiful, full of history, and much more affordable than many popular destinations in Western Europe. One thing I loved was how far my budget could go. Hotels were reasonably priced, local restaurants served generous portions for a great price, and getting around by train or public transport was easy. If you’re looking for a European destination that feels authentic without draining your wallet, Poland is an easy recommendation. 🇭🇺 Hungary Budapest quickly became one of my favorite cities in Europe. Walking along the Danube at night with the Parliament building lit up is something I’ll never forget. The city has a premium feel, but surprisingly, daily expenses are still quite reasonable. From thermal baths to historic cafés and scenic viewpoints, there’s plenty to do without spending a lot. It feels like a luxury destination that doesn’t come with a luxury price tag. 🇷🇴 Romania Romania doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves. I was impressed by how diverse it is from charming old towns like Brașov to the famous castles and the beautiful mountain scenery. Accommodation, transportation, and food are all very budget friendly, making it one of the best-value countries in Europe. If you enjoy places that feel less crowded and more local, Romania is definitely worth adding to your itinerary. Europe doesn’t always have to be expensive. Sometimes the best experiences come from destinations that aren’t at the top of everyone’s bucket list. Some cities impress you with famous landmarks. Others stay with you because of how they make you feel. For me, Budapest was both. Before visiting, I had seen countless photos of the Hungarian Parliament and Fisherman's Bastion. But standing there in person, especially during sunset when the city slowly turned golden, was something photos simply couldn't capture. Budapest surprised me with its grand architecture, relaxing thermal baths, charming cafés, and stunning views from both sides of the Danube River. It's a city that's elegant, affordable, and incredibly photogenic—one that deserves a spot on every Europe itinerary. If you're planning your first visit, here's everything I learned from my own experience. ✨ My Experience One thing I loved about Budapest was how different the city felt from morning to night. During the day, I explored historic streets, climbed up to viewpoints, and admired the beautiful architecture around every corner. But at night... Budapest became even more magical. Watching the Hungarian Parliament illuminate across the Danube while the Chain Bridge sparkled in the evening lights was easily one of my favourite moments during the trip. I also found Budapest much more affordable than many other European capitals. Great food, beautiful cafés, and public transport were all reasonably priced, making it easy to enjoy without constantly checking my budget. If I could visit again, I'd definitely stay one more night just to experience the city after dark once more. 📍 Must-Visit Attractions 🏰 Fisherman's Bastion Without a doubt, my favourite place in Budapest. I arrived early in the morning before the crowds arrived, and the panoramic view overlooking the Parliament Building was absolutely breathtaking. The white towers and fairy-tale architecture make it feel like stepping into a storybook. ⭐ Best visited at sunrise or early morning. 🏛️ Hungarian Parliament Building Probably one of the most beautiful government buildings in the world. It looks impressive during the day, but I honestly think it's even more stunning after sunset when the entire building lights up along the Danube. If you have time, take a river cruise in the evening for the best view. 🌉 Széchenyi Chain Bridge One of Budapest's most iconic landmarks connecting Buda and Pest. I enjoyed walking across it at sunset while watching boats cruise along the river. It's a simple experience, but one I'll always remember. ⛪ St. Stephen's Basilica The largest church in Budapest. Climb to the observation deck if you want one of the best panoramic views over the city. The interior is equally impressive and worth taking your time to admire. ♨️ Széchenyi Thermal Bath One experience you simply shouldn't miss. Relaxing in the warm outdoor pools surrounded by historic architecture was unlike anything I'd experienced before. Even if you're not usually interested in spas, this is part of Budapest's culture. 🚠 Buda Castle Take the funicular or walk up the hill to explore the castle district. The cobblestone streets, colourful buildings, and hidden cafés make this one of the most enjoyable areas to wander without a plan. ☕ Don't Miss Budapest's Café Culture One of my favourite afternoons was simply sitting inside a historic café with a slice of Hungarian cake and coffee while watching people pass by outside. Budapest has plenty of elegant cafés that feel like stepping back in time. Sometimes slowing down became just as memorable as sightseeing. 🚢 Take a Danube River Cruise If you only do one activity in Budapest... Make it an evening river cruise. Watching the Parliament, Chain Bridge, and Buda Castle glowing at night from the water was easily the highlight of my trip. It completely changed the way I saw the city. 🚇 Getting Around Budapest is very easy to explore. The metro, trams, and buses are reliable, and many attractions are within walking distance if you enjoy exploring on foot. 📍 Mama Goulash, Budapest If you want to try Hungarian comfort food in Budapest but prefer a vegetarian option, save Mama Goulash. I had the veggie goulash served in a traditional bread bowl, and it made the meal feel extra cosy, filling and very photo-worthy. The bread bowl is the star here. It makes the dish look so much more fun than a normal bowl, and it’s perfect if you want a classic Budapest foodie photo without ordering meat. The goulash was warm, rich and comforting, with that bright paprika-style colour that instantly feels like Hungary on a plate. The restaurant also offered free lemon water whilst waiting in the queue which was much welcomed as it was a hot day 🫶🏼 I’d also recommend ordering the traditional cucumber salad on the side. It adds a cool, refreshing contrast to the goulash and works really well if you’re visiting Budapest during hot weather. The restaurant itself has a casual, busy feel with indoor seating, a small terrace area and a central location that makes it easy to fit into a sightseeing day. 🍽️ What to order: veggie goulash in the bread bowl + traditional cucumber salad on the side. It’s a great combination if you want something filling but still balanced. Seeing Budapest from the Danube River was easily one of the highlights of our trip. I took a stroll through Budapest, the capital of Hungary, famously known as the "Pearl of the Danube." My first stop was Fisherman’s Bastion, one of Budapest's most iconic scenic spots. [Rododendron Art & Design Shop] ~Budapest's boutiques are just too cute to handle!✨~ When I went boutique-hopping in Budapest, this shop—Rododendron Art & Design Shop—was definitely my favorite♪ It seems to feature and sell works created by local Budapest artists🧑🎨 Inside, the shop was filled with tons of paintings and various unique items. The vibrant, colorful paintings hanging on the walls were especially striking and gorgeous🖼️ It was so much fun just browsing☺️ They have Budapest-themed postcards and bags, plus a huge variety of knick-knacks and accessories, making it a perfect spot for souvenir shopping. On a personal note, I finally found a place to live in Hungary, so I can't wait to visit this shop again to pick out some home decor!! Not only are the items they sell fabulous, but the design of the store itself—right down to the walls and ceiling—is absolutely adorable🎨 By the way, when I stopped by around 2:40 PM, the shop happened to be closed for a quick break. I waited about 10 minutes, and they reopened! When visiting Hungary, beyond admiring the stunning views along the Danube River, you naturally have to experience the rich local thermal bath culture. During my visit, the main central swimming pool was under maintenance, but the adjacent "adventure pool" featured a hydro-powered lazy river. It was quite amusing to sit in the center pool and watch a group of people endlessly spinning around with the current. The water temperature was kept at about 38°C, which wasn't too hot, making it perfect for a longer soak. Aside from the large outdoor thermal baths, the indoor area also offers a variety of unique spa facilities, such as salt-infused steam rooms, saunas, and cold plunge pools. Tip 1: The easiest way to get to Széchenyi is by taking Metro Line 1. Keep in mind that general admission ticket holders need to walk around to the opposite side of the complex to enter. Tip 2: Early bird tickets are available if you enter before 9:00 AM, but they can only be purchased on-site. The weekday price is around 270 HKD, which is roughly 25% off the standard rate. A locker is included, but you must bring your own towel. Tip 3: After your soak, take a stroll through the City Park. You can walk past Vajdahunyad Castle and the House of Music Hungary on your way to Heroes' Square without having to backtrack.

A latte so huge I had to double-check my receipt 🤭 ~ On Saturday morning, before heading to the library, I stopped by Mantra Specialty Coffee Bar ☕️ (The library I visited afterward was Fővárosi Szabó Ervin Könyvtár) Located on a lush, tree-lined street, it's a gorgeous cafe right down to its terraced exterior! The interior features a yellow color scheme, creating a casual and stylish vibe ☺️ I ordered a latte (small size) ☕️ 　*Small (300ml) 1,350 Ft ← approx. 670 JPY Large (480ml) 1,800 Ft ← approx. 900 JPY It was incredibly creamy, and the balance of coffee flavor and rich milk was absolute perfection ✨✨ I wish I could convey just how smooth it was...!! And the swan latte art was adorable 🦢♡ However, since I ordered without checking the volume, I was genuinely shocked by the unexpectedly giant cup for a "small" 🤣 I got there at 10:30 AM on a Saturday. It seemed to be peak hour, as the place was bustling with customers! This spot is also registered as a luggage drop-off location on the "Bounce" app, which might explain why it was so busy in the morning 🧳 (though there wasn't a line to get in). 【pauza】 〜🇭🇺×🇯🇵basic but brilliant〜 While checking out lifestyle stores in Budapest, I stumbled upon this lovely shop called pauza. The exterior was so cute, and I excitedly stepped inside☺️ It was filled with wonderfully simple yet well-designed homewares, and I noticed plenty of colorful items too♪ And as I was looking closely around the store... Wait, is that Japanese!?!?! (*See the last photo) There was a stainless steel pot made in Japan!! I was so surprised! And it wasn't just the pot—there were Japanese kitchen knives, stationery, and all sorts of other Japanese items on display😳 I honestly never expected to find Japanese lifestyle goods all the way out here in Budapest. I looked into it, and it turns out pauza carefully curates products from both Europe and Japan✨ They seem to stock items from small and medium-sized brands that focus on simple designs, high quality, and great functionality. Being surrounded by Japanese items for the first time in a while really warmed my heart☺️ With so many cute things, this place is perfect for picking up souvenirs! Once I stepped in, everything was so incredibly stylish and cute that I wanted to buy the whole store!! They had tons of items like fountain pens, enamel pins, and book covers. I don't even read books, but I seriously debated buying a book cover before ultimately deciding to hold off for now🤣 I thought maybe starting with a cute cover might motivate me to read... so I'll definitely go back and get one later!!! [Lui] ~The pistachio croissant was so good it left me speechless~ Even before visiting Hungary, this place caught my eye because it was featured all over YouTube. Believe it or not, this cafe has a 4.8-star rating on Google Maps with 1,237 reviews! I ordered the famous pistachio croissant (2,180 Ft) and a cappuccino (1,180 Ft). First of all, the pistachio croissant was absolutely out of this world 😭✨✨🥐 I had heard it was good, but I never expected it to be this incredible!!! It was a bit pricey so I hesitated at first, but I'm so glad I went for it. (About 1,100 JPY for a croissant...) The cappuccino was also smooth and delicious☕️ They had plenty of other mouth-watering items like classic croissants and quiches, so I definitely want to come back!!! For dining in, there’s seating on the 1st floor, 2nd floor, and out on the terrace. I visited around noon on a weekday and only had to wait a minute or two to order. The restrooms were on the 2nd floor. [Hungarian State Opera / Magyar Állami Operaház] ~I went to check out the Opera House, which takes on a totally different vibe from day to night!~ Budapest truly lives up to its name as a city of art—the Opera House building itself is absolutely stunning!! First off, getting there is a breeze! It's connected right to the Opera Metro Station! Gotta love how easy that is to find🤭 The exterior is gorgeous, but stepping inside, the sheer luxury blew me away!! As a huge fan of isekai manga where characters slip back in time to the Middle Ages, stepping into this space felt exactly like that—it was simply the best😭✨✨ From the plush texture of the red carpets to the brilliantly sparkling chandeliers and the breathtaking ceiling frescoes, every single corner was flawlessly elegant. Even the doorknobs were super cute💫 I didn't have time to catch a show this time around, but it looks like you can grab tickets either online or right at the box office! Pricing depends on the seat, of course. When I visited, the most affordable tickets were 3,000 HUF, while the ultimate premium seats were 237,600 HUF. For context, in Japanese Yen right now, that's anywhere from about ¥1,500 to ¥123,500...!!!! Umm... Visiting on a weekday evening, I found local couples and friends relaxing, making for a peaceful and refreshing experience…! 💡 Recommended Points ・Temperature-Varied Baths: The indoor baths are at 20℃, 35℃, and 38℃. While not as scorching hot as in Japan, they offer a perfectly comfortable temperature. There's also an open-air bath outside. ・A Relaxing Environment: In addition to the regular sauna, there's a mini-sauna in the shop area! There are also chairs to lie down on after the cold plunge pool. ・A Mysterious Machine: In the changing room, there's an automatic swimsuit wringing machine. This back-alley flea market in Budapest was so adorable, I just have to recommend it💎~ Flea Market Name: Gozsdu Weekend Market Over the weekend, while walking towards the Twentysix Budapest Restaurant, I stumbled upon a flea market tucked away in an alley! It was just past 10 AM when they opened, but it was already bustling with people✨ There was a huge variety of stalls selling everything from vintage-style jewelry and CDs to home decor, knick-knacks, and adorable handmade plushie charms!! On the day I went, they had traditional Hungarian floral embroidered accessories and postcards, which made me think they’d make perfect souvenirs💐 There were also tons of CDs for sale. I thought it would be such a cool vibe to just buy one for its cover art and listen to it back home as a memory of Hungary~♪ The prices were super affordable, which was a huge plus. 【Juhász Cukrászda】 〜Enjoying a relaxing solo sugar rush!!〜 The other day, when I visited Gyöngyös in Hungary, I stopped by a local cafe☕️🍰 ・Store Name: Juhász Cukrászda ・Location: Gyöngyház pláza This cafe had tons of desserts like cakes and gelato. This time, I was totally drawn in by how cream-filled it looked and decided to get the cream puff! The choux pastry had a nice crispiness to it, and with two layers of cream, it offered a completely different flavor from the cream puffs you usually find in Japan. I paired my cream puff with a cafe latte☕️ As is probably typical in Hungary, the hot latte had a thick, solid layer of foam! It was so delicious☺️☺️ Though I didn’t try it this time, they also had gelato available. There were two other groups of customers in the cafe besides me, and I also saw people coming in to get cakes to go! Compared to the touristy prices in Budapest, I really appreciated how affordable it was here. ☕️Latte: 750 HUF (approx. 380 JPY) Cream Puff: 720 HUF (approx. 360 JPY) 📍Located on the ground floor of the Gyöngyház pláza shopping mall. 🚶♀️Just a 4-minute walk from the Gyöngyös bus station (autóbusz állomás). 【Miskolc】 ~Enjoying a Holiday Away from the Hustle and Bustle~ This time, I took a day trip to Miskolc, which is about a 2-hour train ride from Hungary's capital, Budapest! 🚃 Miskolc is famous for its world-renowned "Tokaji wine" and the popular "Tapolca Cave Bath." It’s a relatively small-scale town, which makes sightseeing super easy. As for how to get to Miskolc, I took an IC (InterCity) train from Budapest. There are other options like local trains or buses, but the IC is really convenient since there are no transfers! 🚄 The train departs from Budapest Keleti (Budapest East Station) and arrives at Miskolc Tiszai (Miskolc Station). You can buy tickets at the station, or online via the Máv+ app or website. When I finally arrived after the long journey, the first thing I noticed was how cute the station was! It was decorated with flower pots, giving off a lovely Hungarian vibe. 💐 The station itself had a wonderful, slightly rustic feel that really gave me a sense of the local atmosphere. You can reach the town center quickly by walking a short distance from the station or hopping on a tram. I strolled around the town for a bit and then kicked back at a cafe. ☺️ The retro, stylish vibe was absolutely amazing. I treated myself to some tiramisu and a latte. The staff were also super friendly, making it a perfect spot to chill. 🍰 ☕️ Cafe Frei Miskolc Széchenyi utca ⏰ Hours: 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM (open until 9:00 PM on Fridays & Saturdays) 🛜 Wi-Fi available Miskolc has a wonderfully slow-paced vibe, making it the perfect holiday getaway. Next time, I definitely want to stay overnight! What made it especially nice and safe was the noticeable lack of graffiti. 🥹 p.s. By the way, I didn't visit this time, but you can catch a direct bus from the city center to the cave baths. It takes about 20 minutes from the Centrum bus stop in town to the Miskolctapolca Barlangfürdő bus stop, right by the hot springs.
